Asymptotic symmetries and soft charges of fractons

The asymptotic structure of gauge theories describing fracton interactions is analyzed. Two sets of asymptotic conditions are proposed. Both encompass all known solutions, lead to finite charges and resolve the problem of the divergent energy coming from the monopole contribution. While the first set leads to the expected fracton symmetry algebra, including a dipole charge, the second set provides a soft infinite-dimensional extension of it. These soft charges provide evidence of a rich infrared structure for fracton-like theories and provide one corner of a possible fracton infrared triangle.

Asymptotic symmetries in Carrollian theories of gravity

Asymptotic symmetries in Carrollian gravitational theories in 3+1 space and time dimensions obtained from "magnetic" and "electric" ultrarelativistic contractions of General Relativity are analyzed. In both cases, parity conditions are needed to guarantee a finite symplectic term, in analogy with Einstein gravity. For the magnetic contraction, when Regge-Teitelboim parity conditions are imposed, the asymptotic symmetries are described by the Carroll group. With Henneaux-Troessaert parity conditions, the asymptotic symmetry algebra corresponds to a BMS-like extension of the Carroll algebra. For the electric contraction, because the lapse function does not appear in the boundary term needed to ensure a well-defined action principle, the asymptotic symmetry algebra is truncated, for Regge-Teitelboim parity conditions, to the semidirect sum of spatial rotations and spatial translations. Similarly, with Henneaux-Troessaert parity conditions, the asymptotic symmetries are given by the semidirect sum of spatial rotations and an infinite number of parity odd supertranslations. Thus, from the point of view of the asymptotic symmetries, the magnetic contraction can be seen as a smooth limit of General Relativity, in contrast to its electric counterpart.

Bondi-Metzner-Sachs invariance and electric-magnetic duality

We exhibit a Hamiltonian formulation, both for electromagnetism and gravitation, in which it is not required that the Bondi "news" vanish, but only that the incoming news be equal to the outgoing ones. This requirement is implemented by defining the fields on a two-sheeted hyperbolic surface, which we term "the hourglass". It is a spacelike deformation of the complete lightcone. On it one approaches asymptotically (null) past and future infinity while remaining at a fixed (hyperbolic) time, by going to large spatial distances on its two sheets. The Hamiltonian formulation and -- in particular -- a conserved angular momentum, can only be constructed if one brings in both, the electric and magnetic BMS charges, together with their canonically conjugate "memories". This reveals a close interplay between the BMS and electric-magnetic duality symmetries.

Spacetime structure near generic horizons and soft hair

We explore the spacetime structure near non-extremal horizons in any spacetime dimension greater than two and discover a wealth of novel results: 1. Different boundary conditions are specified by a functional of the dynamical variables, describing inequivalent interactions at the horizon with a thermal bath. 2. The near horizon algebra of a set of boundary conditions, labeled by a parameter $s$, is given by the semi-direct sum of diffeomorphisms at the horizon with "spin-$s$ supertranslations". For $s=1$ we obtain the first explicit near horizon realization of the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra. 3. For another choice, we find a non-linear extension of the Heisenberg algebra, generalizing recent results in three spacetime dimensions. This algebra allows to recover the aforementioned (linear) ones as composites. 4. These examples allow to equip not only black holes, but also cosmological horizons with soft hair. We also discuss implications of soft hair for black hole thermodynamics and entropy.

Boundary conditions for General Relativity on AdS$_{3}$ and the KdV hierarchy

It is shown that General Relativity with negative cosmological constant in three spacetime dimensions admits a new family of boundary conditions being labeled by a nonnegative integer $k$. Gravitational excitations are then described by "boundary gravitons" that fulfill the equations of the $k$-th element of the KdV hierarchy. In particular, $k=0$ corresponds to the Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions so that excitations are described by chiral movers. In the case of $k=1$, the boundary gravitons fulfill the KdV equation and the asymptotic symmetry algebra turns out to be infinite-dimensional, abelian and devoid of central extensions. The latter feature also holds for the remaining cases that describe the hierarchy ($k>1$). Our boundary conditions then provide a gravitational dual of two noninteracting left and right KdV movers, and hence, boundary gravitons possess anisotropic Lifshitz scaling with dynamical exponent $z=2k+1$. Remarkably, despite spacetimes solving the field equations are locally AdS, they possess anisotropic scaling being induced by the choice of boundary conditions. As an application, the entropy of a rotating BTZ black hole is precisely recovered from a suitable generalization of the Cardy formula that is compatible with the anisotropic scaling of the chiral KdV movers at the boundary, in which the energy of AdS spacetime with our boundary conditions depends on $z$ and plays the role of the central charge. The extension of our boundary conditions to the case of higher spin gravity and its link with different classes of integrable systems is also briefly addressed.

Extended anti-de Sitter Hypergravity in $2+1$ Dimensions and Hypersymmetry Bounds

In a recent paper (JHEP {\bf 1508} (2015) 021), we have investigated hypersymmetry bounds in the context of simple anti-de Sitter hypergravity in $2+1$ dimensions. We showed that these bounds involved non linearly the spin-$2$ and spin-$4$ charges, and were saturated by a class of extremal black holes, which are $\frac14$-hypersymmetric. We continue the analysis here by considering $(M,N)$-extended anti-de Sitter hypergravity models, based on the superalgebra $osp(M \vert 4) \oplus osp(N \vert 4)$. The asymptotic symmetry superalgebra is then the direct sum of two-copies of a $W$-superalgebra that contains $so(M)$ (or $so(N)$) Kac-Moody currents of conformal weight $1$, fermionic generators of conformal weight $5/2$ and bosonic generators of conformal weight $4$ in addition to the Virasoro generators. The nonlinear hypersymmetry bounds on the conserved charges are derived and shown to be saturated by a class of extreme hypersymmetric black holes which we explicitly construct.

Generating Higher-Order Lie Algebras by Expanding Maurer Cartan Forms

By means of a generalization of the Maurer-Cartan expansion method we construct a procedure to obtain expanded higher-order Lie algebras. The expanded higher order Maurer-Cartan equations for the case $\mathcal{G}=V_{0}\oplus V_{1}$ are found. A dual formulation for the S-expansion multialgebra procedure is also considered. The expanded higher order Maurer Cartan equations are recovered from S-expansion formalism by choosing a special semigroup. This dual method could be useful in finding a generalization to the case of a generalized free differential algebra, which may be relevant for physical applications in, e.g., higher-spin gauge theories.

Lie Group S-Expansions and Infinite-dimensional Lie algebras

The expansion method of Lie algebras by a semigroup or S-expansion is generalized to act directly on the group manifold, and not only at the level of its Lie algebra. The consistency of this generalization with the dual formulation of the S-expansion is also verified. This is used to show that the Lie algebras of smooth mappings of some manifold M onto a finite-dimensional Lie algebra, such as the so called loop algebras, can be interpreted as a particular kind of S-expanded Lie algebras. We consider as an example the construction of a Yang-Mills theory for an infinite-dimensional algebra, namely loop algebra.

Dual Formulation of the Lie Algebra S-expansion Procedure

The expansion of a Lie algebra entails finding a new, bigger algebra G, through a series of well-defined steps, from an original Lie algebra g. One incarnation of the method, the so-called S-expansion, involves the use of a finite abelian semigroup S to accomplish this task. In this paper we put forward a dual formulation of the S-expansion method which is based on the dual picture of a Lie algebra given by the Maurer-Cartan forms. The dual version of the method is useful in finding a generalization to the case of a gauge free differential algebra, which in turn is relevant for physical applications in, e.g., Supergravity. It also sheds new light on the puzzling relation between two Chern-Simons Lagrangians for gravity in 2+1 dimensions, namely the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian and the one for the so-called "exotic gravity".

Standard General Relativity from Chern-Simons Gravity

Chern-Simons models for gravity are interesting because they provide with a truly gauge-invariant action principle in the fiber-bundle sense. So far, their main drawback has largely been the perceived remoteness from standard General Relativity, based on the presence of higher powers of the curvature in the Lagrangian (except, remarkably, for three-dimensional spacetime). Here we report on a simple model that suggests a mechanism by which standard General Relativity in five-dimensional spacetime may indeed emerge at a special critical point in the space of couplings, where additional degrees of freedom and corresponding "anomalous" Gauss-Bonnet constraints drop out from the Chern-Simons action. To achieve this result, both the Lie algebra g and the symmetric g-invariant tensor that define the Chern-Simons Lagrangian are constructed by means of the Lie algebra S-expansion method with a suitable finite abelian semigroup S. The results are generalized to arbitrary odd dimensions, and the possible extension to the case of eleven-dimensional supergravity is briefly discussed.
