Experimental Determination of the Fermi Surface of Sr3Ir4Sn13

The stannide family of materials A3T4Sn13 (A = La,Sr,Ca, T = Ir,Rh) is interesting due to the interplay between a tunable lattice instability and phonon-mediated superconductivity with Tc ~ 5-7 K. In Sr3Ir4Sn13 a structural transition temperature T* ~ 147 K associated with this instability has been reported, which is believed to result from a superlattice distortion of the high temperature phase on cooling. Here we report the first experimental study of the electronic structure of a member of this material family - Sr3Ir4Sn13 through measurements of quantum oscillations and comparison with density functional theory calculations. Our measurements reveal good agreement with theory using the lattice parameters consistent with a body-centred cubic lattice of symmetry I-43d of the low temperature phase. The study of the fermiology of Sr3Ir4Sn13 we present here should help inform models of multiband superconductivity in the superconducting stannides.

Electronic structure and phonon instabilities in the vicinity of the structural transition and superconductivity of (Sr,Ca)$_3$Ir$_4$Sn$_{13}$

The nature of the lattice instability connected to the structural transition and superconductivity of (Sr,Ca)$_3$Ir$_4$Sn$_{13}$ is not yet fully understood. In this work density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the phonon instabilities as a function of chemical and hydrostatic pressure show that the primary lattice instabilities in Sr$_3$Ir$_4$Sn$_{13}$ lie at phonon modes of wavevectors $\mathbf{q}=(0.5,0,0)$ and $\mathbf{q}=(0.5,0.5,0)$. Following these modes by calculating the energy of supercells incorporating the mode distortion results in an energy advantage of -14.1 meV and -9.0 meV per formula unit respectively. However, the application of chemical pressure to form Ca$_3$Ir$_4$Sn$_{13}$ reduces the energetic advantage of these instabilities, which is completely removed by the application of a hydrostatic pressure of 35 kbar to Ca$_3$Ir$_4$Sn$_{13}$. The evolution of these lattice instabilities is consistent with experimental phase diagram. The structural distortion associated with the mode at $\mathbf{q}=(0.5,0.5,0)$ produces a distorted cell with the same space group symmetry as the experimentally refined low temperature structure. Furthermore, calculation of the deformation potential due to these modes quantitatively demonstrates a strong electron-phonon coupling. Therefore, these modes are likely to be implicated in the structural transition and superconductivity of this system.

Pressure-induced and Composition-induced Structural Quantum Phase Transition in the Cubic Superconductor (Sr/Ca)_3Ir_4Sn_{13}

We show that the quasi-skutterudite superconductor Sr_3Ir_4Sn_{13} undergoes a structural transition from a simple cubic parent structure, the I-phase, to a superlattice variant, the I'-phase, which has a lattice parameter twice that of the high temperature phase. We argue that the superlattice distortion is associated with a charge density wave transition of the conduction electron system and demonstrate that the superlattice transition temperature T* can be suppressed to zero by combining chemical and physical pressure. This enables the first comprehensive investigation of a superlattice quantum phase transition and its interplay with superconductivity in a cubic charge density wave system.

The importance of anisotropic Coulomb interactions and exchange to the band gap and antiferromagnetism of β-MnO2 from DFT+U

First principles density functional theory (DFT) is used to investigate the electronic structure of β-MnO2. From collinear spin polarized calculations we find that DFT+U_Eff predicts a gapless ferromagnet in contrast with experiment which indicates an insulating antiferromagnet. The inclusion of anisotropic Coulomb and exchange interactions in the DFT+U approach, defining U and J explicitly, corrects these errors and leads to an antiferromagnetic ground state with a fundamental gap of 0.8 eV consistent with low temperature experiments. To our knowledge, this work on β-MnO2 represents the first demonstration of a case in which the application of fully anisotropic interactions in DFT+U determines the magnetic order and consequent band gap, while the more commonly used effective U approach fails. Such effects are argued to be of importance in many insulating materials. The mechanism leading to an increase in band gap due to anisotropic interactions is highlighted by analytical calculation of DFT+U d-orbital eigenvalues obtained within a Kanamori-type model. Magnetic coupling constants obtained by the fitting of a Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian to the energies of a range of magnetic states assist in rationalizing the finding that anisotropic interactions enhance the stability of the experimentally observed helical antiferromagnetic order. The plane wave PAW method yields poorer results for the exchange couplings than full-potential LAPW calculations. Finally, we compare the DFT+U results with exchange couplings obtained from hybrid functionals. It is argued that anisotropic interactions should be included in DFT+U if the results are to be properly compared with those from hybrid functionals.

Enhancement of the Superconducting Transition Temperature with Hydrostatic Pressure in Ca_{3}Ir_{4}Sn_{13} Single Crystals

We report high pressure magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements on Ca_{3}Ir_{4}Sn_{13} single crystals up to 60 kbar. These measurements allow us to follow the evolution of the superconducting critical temperature T_c, the resistivity anomaly temperature T*, the superconducting coherence length and the Fermi velocity under pressure. The pressure-temperature phase diagram constructed for Ca_{3}Ir_{4}Sn_{13} shows a dome-shaped pressure dependence of T_c. The initial rise in T_c, which is accompanied by a decrease in T*, is consistent with a reduction in the partial gapping of the Fermi surface under pressure.
