Emergent Dipole Gauge Fields and Fractons

We present a realization of fracton-elasticity duality purely formulated in terms of ordinary gauge fields, encompassing standard elasticity and incommensurate crystals as those describing twisted bilayer graphene, quasicrystals or more general moiré lattices. Our construction comprises a description of all types of two-dimensional defects: disclinations, dislocations, discompressions and point-like defects, and takes into account body forces and impurities. The original form of the duality in terms of tensor gauge fields is recovered after partial gauge fixing. We identify the coupling of each type of defect to the dual gauge fields, and from gauge invariance we derive generalized continuity equations for the defect currents and the expected mobility restrictions of elasticity defects.

Real Quantum Amplitude Estimation

We introduce the Real Quantum Amplitude Estimation (RQAE) algorithm, an extension of Quantum Amplitude Estimation (QAE) which is sensitive to the sign of the amplitude. RQAE is an iterative algorithm which offers explicit control over the amplification policy through an adjustable parameter. We provide a rigorous analysis of the RQAE performance and prove that it achieves a quadratic speedup, modulo logarithmic corrections, with respect to unamplified sampling. Besides, we corroborate the theoretical analysis with a set of numerical experiments.

Holographic fundamental matter in multilayered media

We describe a strongly coupled layered system in 3+1 dimensions by means of a top-down D-brane construction. Adjoint matter is encoded in a large-$N_c$ stack of D3-branes, while fundamental matter is confined to $(2+1)$-dimensional defects introduced by a large-$N_f$ stack of smeared D5-branes. To the anisotropic Lifshitz-like background geometry, we add a single flavor D7-brane treated in the probe limit. Such bulk setup corresponds to a partially quenched approximation for the dual field theory. The holographic model sheds light on the anisotropic physics induced by the layered structure, allowing one to disentangle flavor physics along and orthogonal to the layers as well as identifying distinct scaling laws for various dynamical quantities. We study the thermodynamics and the fluctuation spectrum with varying valence quark mass or baryon chemical potential. We also focus on the density wave propagation in both the hydrodynamic and collisionless regimes where analytic methods complement the numerics, while the latter provides the only resource to address the intermediate transition regime.

Phonon and Shifton from a Real Modulated Scalar

We study a massive real scalar field that breaks translation symmetry dynamically. Higher-gradient terms favour modulated configurations and neither finite density nor temperature are needed. In the broken phase, the energy density depends on the spatial position and the linear fluctuations show phononic dispersion. We then study a related massless scalar model where the modulated vacua break also the field shift symmetry and give rise to an additional Nambu-Goldstone mode, the shifton. We discuss the independence of the shifton and the phonon and draw an analogy to rotons in superfluids. Proceeding from first-principles, we re-obtain and generalise some standard results for one-dimensional lattices. Eventually, we prove stability against geometric deformations extending existing analyses for elastic media to the higher-derivatives cases.

Diffusion and universal relaxation of holographic phonons

In phases where translations are spontaneously broken, new gapless degrees of freedom appear in the low energy spectrum (the phonons). At long wavelengths, they couple to small fluctuations of the conserved densities of the system. This mixing is captured by new diffusive transport coefficients, as well as qualitatively different collective modes, such as shear sound modes. We use Gauge/Gravity duality to model such phases and analytically compute the corresponding diffusivities in terms of data {of the dual background black hole solution}. In holographic quantum critical low temperature phases, we show that these diffusivities are governed by universal relaxation of the phonons into the heat current when the dynamical critical exponent $z>2$. Finally, we compute the spectrum of transverse collective modes and show that their dispersion relation matches the dispersion relation of the shear sound modes of the hydrodynamic theory of crystalline solids.

Gapless and gapped holographic phonons

We study a holographic model where translations are both spontaneously and explicitly broken, leading to the presence of (pseudo)-phonons in the spectrum. The weak explicit breaking is due to two independent mechanisms: a small source for the condensate itself and additional linearly space-dependent marginal operators. The low energy dynamics of the model is described by Wigner crystal hydrodynamics. In absence of a source for the condensate, the phonons remain gapless, but momentum is relaxed. Turning on a source for the condensate damps and pins the phonons. Finally, we verify that the universal relation between the phonon damping rate, mass and diffusivity reported in arXiv:1812.08118 continues to hold in this model for weak enough explicit breaking.

Simplest phonons and pseudo-phonons in field theory

We study the emergence of Nambu-Goldstone modes due to broken translation symmetry in field theory. Purely spontaneous breaking yields a massless phonon which develops a mass upon introducing a perturbative explicit breaking. The pseudo-phonon mass agrees with Gell Mann-Oakes-Renner relations. We analyze the simplest possible theories featuring gradient Mexican hats and describing space-dependent order parameters. We comment on homogeneous translation breaking and the connections with holographic Q-lattices.

Analytic pseudo-Goldstone bosons

We consider the interplay between explicit and spontaneous symmetry breaking in strongly coupled field theories. Some well-known statements, such as the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relation, descend directly from the Ward identities and have thus a general relevance. Such Ward identities are recovered in gauge/gravity dual setups through holographic renormalization. In a simple paradigmatic three dimensional toy-model, we find analytic expressions for the two-point correlators which match all the quantum field theoretical expectations. Moreover, we have access to the full spectrum, which is reminiscent of linear confinement.

Chasing the cuprates with dilatonic dyons

Magnetic field and momentum dissipation are key ingredients in describing condensed matter systems. We include them in gauge/gravity and systematically explore the bottom-up panorama of holographic IR effective field theories based on bulk Einstein-Maxwell Lagrangians plus scalars. The class of solutions here examined appear insufficient to capture the phenomenology of charge transport in the cuprates. We analyze in particular the temperature scaling of the resistivity and of the Hall angle. Keeping an open attitude, we illustrate weak and strong points of the approach.

A goldstino at the bottom of the cascade

Working within a five-dimensional consistent truncation of type IIB supergravity dimensionally reduced on $T^{1,1}$, we consider supersymmetry breaking solutions with the asymptotics of the supersymmetric Klebanov-Strassler background. There exists a two-parameter family of such solutions. Within this family, we show that those (and only those) solutions related to antiD-branes at the tip of the conifold correspond to dual field theory vacua where a goldstino mode is present and supercurrent Ward identities hold. Our findings do not depend on the IR singularity of the dual backgrounds, nor on its resolution. As such, they constitute an independent, necessary check for the existence of supersymmetry breaking vacua in the conifold cascading gauge theory. Our analysis relies on a holographic derivation of the Ward identities which has a wider applicability, beyond the specific system and symmetries considered here.

Bounds on charge and heat diffusivities in momentum dissipating holography

Inspired by a recently conjectured universal bound for thermo-electric diffusion constants in quantum critical, strongly coupled systems and relying on holographic analytical computations, we investigate the possibility of formulating Planckian bounds in different holographic models featuring momentum dissipation. For a simple massive gravity dilaton model at zero charge density we find robust linear in temperature resistivity and entropy density alongside a constant electric susceptibility. In addition we explicitly find that the sum of the thermo-electric diffusion constants is bounded.

Magneto-transport from momentum dissipating holography

We obtain explicit expressions for the thermoelectric transport coefficients of a strongly coupled, planar medium in the presence of an orthogonal magnetic field and momentum-dissipating processes. The computations are performed within the gauge/gravity framework where the momentum dissipation mechanism is introduced by including a mass term for the bulk graviton. Relying on the structure of the computed transport coefficients and promoting the parameters to become dynamical functions, we propose a holography inspired phenomenology open to a direct comparison with experimental data from the cuprates.

The Holographic Goldstino

We find the fingerprints of the Goldstino associated to spontaneous supersymmetry breaking in a prototype holographic model for a strongly coupled field theory. The Goldstino massless pole arises in two-point correlators of the supercurrent, due to contact terms in supersymmetry Ward identities. We show how these contact terms are obtained from the holographic renormalization of the gravitino sector, independently of the details of the bulk background solution. For completeness, we provide an example of a family of such solutions in a simple supergravity model.

Analytic DC thermo-electric conductivities in holography with massive gravitons

We provide an analytical derivation of the thermo-electric transport coefficients of the simplest momentum-dissipating model in gauge/gravity where the lack of momentum conservation is realized by means of explicit graviton mass in the bulk. We rely on the procedure recently described by Donos and Gauntlett in the context of Q-lattices and holographic models where momentum dissipation is realized through non-trivial scalars. The analytical approach confirms the results found previously by means of numerical computations.

Anatomy of new SUSY breaking holographic RG flows

We find and thoroughly study new supergravity domain wall solutions which are holographic realizations of supersymmetry breaking strongly coupled gauge theories. We set ourselves in an N=2 gauged supergravity with a minimal content in order to reproduce a dual N=1 effective SCFT which has a U(1)_R symmetry, a chiral operator whose components are responsible for triggering the RG flow, and an additional U(1)_F symmetry. We present a full three dimensional parameter space of solutions, which generically break supersymmetry. Some known solutions are recovered for specific sets of values of the parameters, with the new solutions interpolating between them. The generic backgrounds being singular, we provide a stability test of their dual theories by showing that there are no tachyonic resonances in the two point correlators. We compute the latter by holographic renormalization. We also carefully analyze the appearance of massless modes, such as the dilaton and the R axion, when the respective symmetries are spontaneously broken, and their lifting when the breaking is explicit. We further comment on the application of such class of backgrounds as archetypes of strongly coupled hidden sectors for gauge mediation of supersymmetry breaking. In particular, we show that it is possible to model in this way all types of hierarchies between the visible sector gaugino and sfermion masses.

Coexistence of two vector order parameters: a holographic model for ferromagnetic superconductivity

We study a generalization of the standard holographic p-wave superconductor featuring two interacting vector order parameters. Basing our argument on the symmetry and linear response properties of the model, we propose it as a holographic effective theory describing a strongly coupled ferromagnetic superconductor. We show that the two order parameters undergo concomitant condensations as a manifestation of an intrinsically interlaced electric/magnetic dynamics. Such intertwined dynamics is confirmed by the study of the transport properties. We characterize thoroughly the equilibrium and the linear response (i.e. optical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility) of the model at hand by means of a probe approximation analysis. Some insight about the effects of backreaction in the normal phase can be gained by analogy with the s-wave unbalanced holographic superconductor.

Electromagnetic response of strongly coupled plasmas

We present a thorough analysis of the electromagnetic response of strongly coupled neutral plasmas described by the gauge/gravity correspondence. The coupling of the external electromagnetic field with the tower of quasi-normal modes of the plasmas supports the presence of various electromagnetic modes with different properties. Among them we underline the existence of negative refraction with low dissipation for a transverse non-hydrodynamical mode. Previous hydrodynamical approaches have shown the ubiquitous character of negative refraction in charged plasmas and the absence thereof in neutral plasmas. Our results here extend the analysis for neutral plasmas beyond the hydrodynamical regime. As an application of these new insights we briefly discuss the case of the quark gluon plasma in the temperature dominated regime.

Thermo-electric transport in gauge/gravity models with momentum dissipation

We present a systematic definition and analysis of the thermo-electric linear response in gauge/gravity systems focusing especially on models with massive gravity in the bulk and therefore momentum dissipation in the dual field theory. A precise treatment of finite counter-terms proves to be essential to yield a consistent physical picture whose hydrodynamic and beyond-hydrodynamics behaviors noticeably match with field theoretical expectations. The model furnishes a possible gauge/gravity description of the crossover from the quantum-critical to the disorder-dominated Fermi-liquid behaviors, as expected in graphene.

Competition/Enhancement of Two Probe Order Parameters in the Unbalanced Holographic Superconductor

We introduce and study a simple unbalanced holographic superconductor model with two scalar order parameters. The attention is focused on the possibility of coexisting orderings corresponding to the concomitant condensation of two scalar operators. Through a probe analysis we show that an attractive or repulsive direct interaction between the two bulk scalars leads respectively to competition and enhancement of the associated condensates. The system at hand is a toy model for studying generic multiple ordering in a strongly coupled context and some comments are given about its applicability to the ferromagnetic unconventional superconductors.

Minimal Model for an Unbalanced Holographic Superconductor

We describe the simplest holographic model for an s-wave unbalanced superconductor in 2+1 dimensions. We study its phase diagram and linear response features with particular attention to the possibility of spatially modulated phases (LOFF) and mixed spin-electric properties. The normal phase of the model at hand allows us to analyze a strong-coupling generalization of Mott two-current model for spintronic systems; the superconducting phase features an interesting DC spin-superconductivity without spin-symmetry breaking .

D-branes and Non-Perturbative Quantum Field Theory: Stringy Instantons and Strongly Coupled Spintronics

The non-perturbative dynamics of quantum field theories is studied using theoretical tools inspired by string formalism. Two main lines are developed: the analysis of stringy instantons in a class of four-dimensional N=2 gauge theories and the holographic study of the minimal model for a strongly coupled unbalanced superconductor. The field theory instanton calculus admits a natural and efficient description in terms of D-brane models. In addition, the string viewpoint offers the possibility of generalizing the ordinary instanton configurations. Even though such generalized, or stringy, instantons would be absent in a purely field-theoretical, low-energy treatment, we demonstrate that they do alter the IR effective description of the brane dynamics by introducing contributions related to the string scale. In the first part of this thesis we compute explicitly the stringy instanton corrections to the effective prepotential in a class of quiver gauge theories. In the second part of the thesis, we present a detailed analysis of the minimal holographic setup yielding an effective description of a superconductor with two Abelian currents. The model contains a scalar field whose condensation produces a spontaneous symmetry breaking which describes the transition to a superfluid phase. This system has important applications in both QCD and condensed matter physics; moreover, it allows us to study mixed electric-spin transport properties (i.e. spintronics) at strong coupling.

Field Theory Interpretation of N=2 Stringy Instantons

We consider stringy instanton contributions to the prepotential of low-energy N=2 theories engineered by D-brane set ups at orbifold and orientifold singularities. We show that such contributions can always be reproduced in a purely field theoretic UV completion. We perform the explicit check up to instanton number three, both for Sp(0) and U(1) stringy instantons, the latter being introduced for the purpose. We further argue that the UV completion that we propose, though weakly coupled, can be smoothly mapped to a gravity-dual inspired UV completion consisting of a cascade of baryonic root transitions.

Unbalanced Holographic Superconductors and Spintronics

We present a minimal holographic model for s-wave superconductivity with unbalanced Fermi mixtures, in 2+1 dimensions at strong coupling. The breaking of a U(1)_A "charge" symmetry is driven by a non-trivial profile for a charged scalar field in a charged asymptotically AdS_4 black hole. The chemical potential imbalance is implemented by turning on the temporal component of a U(1)_B "spin" field under which the scalar field is uncharged. We study the phase diagram of the model and comment on the eventual (non) occurrence of LOFF-like inhomogeneous superconducting phases. Moreover, we study "charge" and "spin" transport, implementing a holographic realization (and a generalization thereof to superconducting setups) of Mott's two-current model which provides the theoretical basis of modern spintronics. Finally we comment on possible string or M-theory embeddings of our model and its higher dimensional generalizations, within consistent Kaluza-Klein truncations and brane-anti brane setups.

Stringy Instantons in SU(N) N=2 Non-Conformal Gauge Theories

In this paper we explicitly obtain the leading corrections to the SU(N) N=2 prepotential due to stringy instantons both in flat space-time and in the presence of a non-trivial graviphoton background field. We show that the stringy corrections to the prepotential are expressible in terms of the elementary symmetric polynomials. For N>2 the theory is not conformal; we discuss the introduction of an explicit dependence on the string scale α' in the low-energy effective action through the stringy non-perturbative sector.

Stringy instanton effects in N=2 gauge theories

We study the non-perturbative effects induced by stringy instantons on N=2 SU}(N) gauge theories in four dimensions, realized on fractional D3 branes in a C^3/Z_3 orientifold. The stringy instantons, corresponding to D(-1) branes that occupy a node of the orientifold quiver diagram where no D3 brane is present, have the right content of zero-modes to produce non-perturbative terms in the four-dimensional effective action. In the SU(2) theory these terms have the same structure for all instanton numbers and yield a series of non-perturbative corrections to the prepotential. We explicitly compute these corrections up to instanton number k=5 using localization methods.
