A divergence center interpretation of general symmetric Kubo-Ando means, and related weighted multivariate operator means

It is well known that special Kubo-Ando operator means admit divergence center interpretations, moreover, they are also mean squared error estimators for certain metrics on positive definite operators. In this paper we give a divergence center interpretation for every symmetric Kubo-Ando mean. This characterization of the symmetric means naturally leads to a definition of weighted and multivariate versions of a large class of symmetric Kubo-Ando means. We study elementary properties of these weighted multivariate means, and note in particular that in the special case of the geometric mean we recover the weighted A#H\mathcal{A} \# \mathcal{H}-mean introduced by Kim, Lawson, and Lim.

Isometric study of Wasserstein spaces --- the real line

Recently Kloeckner described the structure of the isometry group of the quadratic Wasserstein space W2(Rn)\mathcal{W}_2\left(\mathbb{R}^n\right). It turned out that the case of the real line is exceptional in the sense that there exists an exotic isometry flow. Following this line of investigation, we compute Isom(Wp(R))\mathrm{Isom}\left(\mathcal{W}_p(\mathbb{R})\right), the isometry group of the Wasserstein space Wp(R)\mathcal{W}_p(\mathbb{R}) for all p∈[1,∞)∖{2}p \in [1, \infty)\setminus\{2\}. We show that W2(R)\mathcal{W}_2(\mathbb{R}) is also exceptional regarding the parameter pp: Wp(R)\mathcal{W}_p(\mathbb{R}) is isometrically rigid if and only if p≠2p\neq 2. Regarding the underlying space, we prove that the exceptionality of p=2p=2 disappears if we replace R\mathbb{R} by the compact interval [0,1][0,1]. Surprisingly, in that case, Wp([0,1])\mathcal{W}_p\left([0,1]\right) is isometrically rigid if and only if p≠1p\neq1. Moreover, W1([0,1])\mathcal{W}_1\left([0,1]\right) admits isometries that split mass, and Isom(W1([0,1]))\mathrm{Isom}\left(\mathcal{W}_1\left([0,1]\right)\right) cannot be embedded into Isom(W1(R)).\mathrm{Isom}\left(\mathcal{W}_1(\mathbb{R})\right).

Quantum Hellinger distances revisited

This short note aims to study quantum Hellinger distances investigated recently by Bhatia et al. [Lett. Math. Phys. 109 (2019), 1777-1804] with a particular emphasis on barycenters. We introduce the family of generalized quantum Hellinger divergences, that are of the form ϕ(A,B)=Tr((1−c)A+cB−AσB),ϕ(A,B)=\mathrm{Tr} \left((1-c)A + c B - A σB \right), where σσ is an arbitrary Kubo-Ando mean, and c∈(0,1)c \in (0,1) is the weight of σ.σ. We note that these divergences belong to the family of maximal quantum ff-divergences, and hence are jointly convex and satisfy the data processing inequality (DPI). We derive a characterization of the barycenter of finitely many positive definite operators for these generalized quantum Hellinger divergences. We note that the characterization of the barycenter as the weighted multivariate 1/21/2-power mean, that was claimed in the work of Bhatia et al. mentioned above, is true in the case of commuting operators, but it is not correct in the general case.

Continuous Jordan triple endomorphisms of P2\mathbb{P}_2

We describe the structure of all continuous Jordan triple endomorphisms of the set P2\mathbb{P}_2 of all positive definite 2×22\times 2 matrices thus completing a recent result of ours. We also mention an application concerning sorts of surjective generalized isometries on P2\mathbb{P}_2 and, as second application, we complete another former result of ours on the structure of sequential endomorphisms of finite dimensional effect algebras.

Maps on positive definite matrices preserving Bregman and Jensen divergences

In this paper we determine those bijective maps of the set of all positive definite n×nn\times n complex matrices which preserve a given Bregman divergence corresponding to a differentiable convex function that satisfies certain conditions. We cover the cases of the most important Bregman divergences and present the precise structure of the mentioned transformations. Similar results concerning Jensen divergences and their preservers are also given.

On a problem of Bauschke and Borwein

Consider a differentiable convex function f:Rn⊃domf→R.f: \mathbb{R}^n \supset \mathrm{dom} f \rightarrow \mathbb{R}. The induced spectral function FF is given by F=f∘λ,F=f \circ λ, where λ:Mnsa→Rnλ: \mathbf{M}_n^{sa} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{n} is the eigenvalue map. Let us denote by DfD_f and DFD_F the Bregman distances associated with ff and F,F, respectively. In the paper "Joint and separate convexity of the Bregman distance" written by H. Bauschke and J. Borwein the following open problem has been suggested. "Is DfD_f jointly convex if and only if DFD_F is?" In this short note we provide a negative answer to this question.

On the joint convexity of the Bregman divergence of matrices

We characterize the functions for which the corresponding Bregman divergence is jointly convex on matrices. As an application of this characterization, we derive a sharp inequality for the quantum Tsallis entropy of a tripartite state, which can be considered as a generalization of the strong subadditivity of the von Neumann entropy. (In general, the strong subadditivity of the Tsallis entropy fails for quantum states, but it holds for classical states.) Furthermore, we show that the joint convexity of the Bregman divergence does not imply the monotonicity under stochastic maps, but every monotone Bregman divergence is jointly convex.

Optimal parameter estimation of Pauli channels

The optimal measurement configuration, i.e., the optimal input quantum state and measurement in the form of a POVM with two elements, is investigated in this paper for qubit and generalized Pauli channels. The channel directions are defined as the contracting directions of the channel with an arbitrary fixed basis of Pauli- matrices. In the qubit Pauli channel case with known channel directions it is shown that the optimal configuration that maximizes the Fisher information of the estimated parameters consists of three von Neumann measurements together with pure input states directed to the appropriate channel directions. Extensions of these results for generalized Pauli channels are also given. Furthermore, a computationally efficient estimation method is proposed for estimating the channel directions in the qubit Pauli channel case. The efficiency of this method is illustrated by simulations: it is shown that its variance is of order 1/N, where N is the number of used measurements.

Some inequalities for quantum Tsallis entropy related to the strong subadditivity

In this paper we investigate the inequality Sq(ρ123)+Sq(ρ2)≤Sq(ρ12)+Sq(ρ23) (∗)S_q(ρ_{123})+S_q(ρ_2)\leq S_q(ρ_{12})+S_q(ρ_{23}) \, (*) where ρ123ρ_{123} is a state on a finite dimensional Hilbert space H1⊗H2⊗H3,\mathcal{H}_1\otimes \mathcal{H}_2\otimes \mathcal{H}_3, and SqS_q is the Tsallis entropy. It is well-known that the strong subadditivity of the von Neumnann entropy can be derived from the monotonicity of the Umegaki relative entropy. Now, we present an equivalent form of (∗)(*), which is an inequality of relative quasi-entropies. We derive an inequality of the form Sq(ρ123)+Sq(ρ2)≤Sq(ρ12)+Sq(ρ23)+fq(ρ123)S_q(ρ_{123})+S_q(ρ_2)\leq S_q(ρ_{12})+S_q(ρ_{23})+f_q(ρ_{123}), where f1(ρ123)=0f_1(ρ_{123})=0. Such a result can be considered as a generalization of the strong subadditivity of the von Neumnann entropy. One can see that (∗)(*) does not hold in general (a picturesque example is included in this paper), but we give a sufficient condition for this inequality, as well.

Pauli channel tomography with unknown channel directions

In this paper we estimate the parameters of the qubit Pauli channel using the channel matrix formalism. The main novelty of this work is that we do not assume the directions of the Pauli channel to be known, but they are determined through the tomography process, too. The results show that for optimally estimating the contraction parameters and the channel matrix we should have input qubits and measurements in the channel directions. However, for optimally estimating the channel directions, we should use different tomography conditions.
