Extensions of the Busemann-Petty Problem for Arbitrary Measures

The classical Busemann-Petty problem asks whether smaller central hyperplane sections of origin-symmetric convex bodies necessarily imply smaller total volume. Zvavitch studied this question for arbitrary measures with continuous even densities, providing sufficient conditions for affirmative cases in terms of the distributional behavior of the ratio between the densities involved. We refine this result by extending it to a broader class of distributions and allowing a distinct pair of densities for each body, one for hyperplane sections and another for the full volume. We also present some examples illustrating cases not covered by previous results.

Multipliers for Hardy spaces of Dirichlet series

We characterize the space of multipliers from the Hardy space of Dirichlet series Hp\mathcal H_p into Hq\mathcal H_q for every 1≤p,q≤∞1 \leq p,q \leq \infty. For a fixed Dirichlet series, we also investigate some structural properties of its associated multiplication operator. In particular, we study the norm, the essential norm, and the spectrum for an operator of this kind. We exploit the existing natural identification of spaces of Dirichlet series with spaces of holomorphic functions in infinitely many variables and apply several methods from complex and harmonic analysis to obtain our results. As a byproduct we get analogous statements on such Hardy spaces of holomorphic functions.

Projection constants for spaces of multivariate polynomials

The general problem we address is to develop new methods in the study of projection constants of Banach spaces of multivariate polynomials. The relative projection constant λ(X,Y)\boldsymbolλ(X,Y) of a subspace XX of a Banach YY is the smallest norm among all possible projections on YY onto XX, and the projection constant λ(X)\boldsymbolλ(X) is the supremum of all relative projection constants of XX taken with respect to all possible super spaces YY. This is one of the most significant notions of modern Banach space theory and has been intensively studied since the birth of abstract operator theory. We focus on projection constants of Banach spaces of multivariate polynomials formed either by trigonometric polynomials f(g)=∑γ∈Ef^(γ)γ(g)f(g)=\sum_{γ\in E} \hat{f}(γ) γ(g) defined on a compact topological group GG, which have Fourier coefficients f^(γ)\hat{f}(γ) supported in a finite set EE of characters; or analytic polynomials P(z)=∑α∈Jcα(P) zαP(z)=\sum_{α\in J}c_α(P)\,z^α, which are defined on a Banach space Xn=(Cn,∥⋅∥)X_n = (\mathbb{C}^n, \|\cdot\|) and have monomial coefficients cα(P)c_α(P) supported in a finite set J⊂N0nJ \subset \mathbb{N}_0^n of multi indices. Depending on the underlying structure (of the group, Banach space or index set), the goal is to prove precise formulas or asymptotically optimal estimates. Our general setting is flexible enough to handle a wide variety of Banach spaces of polynomials, including analytic polynomials on polydiscs, Dirichlet polynomials on the complex plane, and polynomials on Boolean cubes {−1,+1}n\{-1,+1\}^n. Moreover, we get an explicit formula for the projection constant of the space of trace class operators. The methods developed here enable us to prove new estimates for important invariants such as the unconditional basis constant and the Gordon-Lewis constant for Banach spaces of multivariate polynomials.

Continuous quantitative Helly-type results

Brazitikos' results on quantititative Helly-type theorems (for the volume and for the diameter) rely on the work of Srivastava on sparsification of John's decompositions. We change this technique by a stronger recent result due to Friedland and Youssef. This, together with an appropriate selection in the accuracy of the approximation, allow us to obtain Helly-type versions which are sensitive to the number of convex sets involved.

Hardy space of translated Dirichlet series

We study the Hardy space of translated Dirichlet series H+\mathcal{H}_{+}. It consists on those Dirichlet series ∑ann−s\sum a_n n^{-s} such that for some (equivalently, every) 1≤p<∞1 \leq p < \infty, the translation ∑ann−(s+1σ)\sum{a_{n}}n^{-(s+\frac{1}σ)} belongs to the Hardy space Hp\mathcal{H}^{p} for every σ>0σ>0. We prove that this set, endowed with the topology induced by the seminorms {∥⋅∥2,k}k∈N\left\{\Vert\cdot\Vert_{2,k}\right\}_{k\in\mathbb{N}} (where ∥∑ann−s∥2,k\Vert\sum{a_{n}n^{-s}}\Vert_{2,k} is defined as ∥∑ann−(s+1k)∥H2\big\Vert\sum{a_n n^{-(s+\frac{1}{k})}} \big\Vert_{\mathcal{H}^{2}}), is a Fréchet space which is Schwartz and non nuclear. Moreover, the Dirichlet monomials {n−s}n∈N\{n^{-s}\}_{n \in \mathbb N} are an unconditional Schauder basis of H+\mathcal H_+. In the spirit of Gordon and Hedenmalm's work, we completely characterize the composition operator on the Hardy space of translated Dirichlet series. Moreover, we study the superposition operators on H+\mathcal{H}_{+} and show that every polynomial defines an operator of this kind. We present certain sufficient conditions on the coefficients of an entire function to define a superposition operator. Relying on number theory techniques we exhibit some examples which do not provide superposition operators. We finally look at the action of the differentiation and integration operators on these spaces.

Asymptotic estimates for the largest volume ratio of a convex body

The largest volume ratio of given convex body K⊂RnK \subset \mathbb{R}^n is defined as $$\mbox{lvr}(K):= \sup_{L \subset \mathbb{R}^n} \mbox{vr}(K,L),$$ where the sup⁡\sup runs over all the convex bodies LL. We prove the following sharp lower bound $$c \sqrt{n} \leq \mbox{lvr}(K),$$ for every body KK (where c>0c>0 is an absolute constant). This result improves the former best known lower bound, of order nlog⁡log⁡(n)\sqrt{\frac{n}{\log \log(n)}}. We also study the exact asymptotic behavior of the largest volume ratio for some natural classes. In particular, we show that $\mbox{lvr}(K)$ behaves as the square root of the dimension of the ambient space in the following cases: if KK is the unit ball of an unitary invariant norm in Rd×d\mathbb{R}^{d \times d} (e.g., the unit ball of the pp-Schatten class SpdS_p^d for any 1≤p≤∞1 \leq p \leq \infty), KK is the the unit ball of the full/symmetric tensor product of ℓp\ell_p-spaces endowed with the projective or injective norm or KK is unconditional.

Asymptotic estimates on the von Neumann inequality for homogeneous polynomials

By the von Neumann inequality for homogeneous polynomials there exists a positive constant Ck,q(n)C_{k,q}(n) such that for every kk-homogeneous polynomial pp in nn variables and every nn-tuple of commuting operators (T1,…,Tn)(T_1, \dots, T_n) with ∑i=1n∥Ti∥q≤1\sum_{i=1}^{n} \Vert T_{i} \Vert^{q} \leq 1 we have ∥p(T1,…,Tn)∥L(H)≤Ck,q(n)  sup⁡{∣p(z1,…,zn)∣:∑i=1n∣zi∣q≤1} . \|p(T_1, \dots, T_n)\|_{\mathcal L(\mathcal H)} \leq C_{k,q}(n) \; \sup\{ |p(z_1, \dots, z_n)| : \textstyle \sum_{i=1}^{n} \vert z_{i} \vert^{q} \leq 1 \}\,. For fixed kk and qq, we study the asymptotic growth of the smallest constant Ck,q(n)C_{k,q}(n) as nn (the number of variables/operators) tends to infinity. For q=∞q = \infty, we obtain the correct asymptotic behavior of this constant (answering a question posed by Dixon in the seventies). For 2≤q<∞2 \leq q < \infty we improve some lower bounds given by Mantero and Tonge, and prove the asymptotic behavior up to a logarithmic factor. To achieve this we provide estimates of the norm of homogeneous unimodular Steiner polynomials, i.e. polynomials such that the multi-indices corresponding to the nonzero coefficients form partial Steiner systems.

Coincidence of extendible vector-valued ideals with their minimal kernel

We provide coincidence results for vector-valued ideals of multilinear operators. More precisely, if A\mathfrak A is an ideal of nn-linear mappings we give conditions for which the following equality A(E1,…,En;F)=Amin(E1,…,En;F)\mathfrak A(E_1,\dots,E_n;F) = {\mathfrak A}^{min}(E_1,\dots,E_n;F) holds isometrically. As an application, we obtain in many cases that the monomials form a Schauder basis on the space A(E1,…,En;F)\mathfrak A(E_1,\dots,E_n;F). Several structural and geometric properties are also derived using this equality. We apply our results to the particular case where A\mathfrak A is the classical ideal of extendible or Pietsch-integral multilinear operators. Similar statements are given for ideals of vector-valued homogeneous polynomials.

Energy integrals and metric embedding theory

For some centrally symmetric convex bodies K⊂RnK\subset \mathbb R^n, we study the energy integral sup⁡∫K∫K∥x−y∥rp dμ(x)dμ(y), \sup \int_{K} \int_{K} \|x - y\|_r^{p}\, dμ(x) dμ(y), where the supremum runs over all finite signed Borel measures μμ on KK of total mass one. In the case where K=BqnK = B_q^n, the unit ball of ℓqn\ell_q^n (for 1<q≤21 < q \leq 2) or an ellipsoid, we obtain the exact value or the correct asymptotical behavior of the supremum of these integrals. We apply these results to a classical embedding problem in metric geometry. We consider in Rn\mathbb R^n the Euclidean distance d2d_2. For 0<α<10 < α< 1, we estimate the minimum RR for which the snowflaked metric space (K,d2α)(K, d_2^α) may be isometrically embedded on the surface of a Hilbert sphere of radius RR.

Geometry of integral polynomials, MM-ideals and unique norm preserving extensions

We use the Aron-Berner extension to prove that the set of extreme points of the unit ball of the space of integral polynomials over a real Banach space XX is {±ϕk:ϕ∈X∗,∥ϕ∥=1}\{\pm ϕ^k: ϕ\in X^*, \| ϕ\|=1\}. With this description we show that, for real Banach spaces XX and YY, if XX is a non trivial MM-ideal in YY, then ⨂^εk,sk,sX\hat\bigotimes^{k,s}_{ε_{k,s}} X (the kk-th symmetric tensor product of XX endowed with the injective symmetric tensor norm) is \emph{never} an MM-ideal in ⨂^εk,sk,sY\hat\bigotimes^{k,s}_{ε_{k,s}} Y. This result marks up a difference with the behavior of non-symmetric tensors since, when XX is an MM-ideal in YY, it is known that ⨂^εkkX\hat\bigotimes^k_{ε_k} X (the kk-th tensor product of XX endowed with the injective tensor norm) is an MM-ideal in ⨂^εkkY\hat\bigotimes^k_{ε_k} Y. Nevertheless, if XX is Asplund, we prove that every integral kk-homogeneous polynomial in XX has a unique extension to YY that preserves the integral norm. We explicitly describe this extension. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions (related with the continuity of the Aron-Berner extension morphism) for a fixed kk-homogeneous polynomial PP belonging to a maximal polynomial ideal $\Q(^kX)$ to have a unique norm preserving extension to $\Q(^kX^{**})$. To this end, we study the relationship between the bidual of the symmetric tensor product of a Banach space and the symmetric tensor product of its bidual and show (in the presence of the BAP) that both spaces have `the same local structure'. Other applications to the metric and isomorphic theory of symmetric tensor products and polynomial ideals are also given.

The ideal of p-compact operators: a tensor product approach

We study the space of pp-compact operators Kp\mathcal K_p, using the theory of tensor norms and operator ideals. We prove that Kp\mathcal K_p is associated to /dp/d_p, the left injective associate of the Chevet-Saphar tensor norm dpd_p (which is equal to gp′′g_{p'}'). This allows us to relate the theory of pp-summing operators with that of pp-compact operators. With the results known for the former class and appropriate hypothesis on EE and FF we prove that Kp(E;F)\mathcal K_p(E;F) is equal to Kq(E;F)\mathcal K_q(E;F) for a wide range of values of pp and qq, and show that our results are sharp. We also exhibit several structural properties of Kp\mathcal K_p. For instance, we obtain that Kp\mathcal K_p is regular, surjective, totally accessible and characterize its maximal hull Kpmax\mathcal K_p^{max} as the dual ideal of the pp-summing operators, ΠpdualΠ_p^{dual}. Furthermore, we prove that Kp\mathcal K_p coincides isometrically with QNpdual\mathcal {QN}_p^{dual}, the dual ideal of the quasi pp-nuclear operators.

Extending polynomials in maximal and minimal ideals

Given an homogeneous polynomial on a Banach space EE belonging to some maximal or minimal polynomial ideal, we consider its iterated extension to an ultrapower of EE and prove that this extension remains in the ideal and has the same ideal norm. As a consequence, we show that the Aron-Berner extension is a well defined isometry for any maximal or minimal ideal of homogeneous polynomials. This allow us to obtain symmetric versions of some basic results of the metric theory of tensor products.

Natural symmetric tensor norms

In the spirit of the work of Grothendieck, we introduce and study natural symmetric n-fold tensor norms. We prove that there are exactly six natural symmetric tensor norms for n≥3n\ge 3, a noteworthy difference with the 2-fold case in which there are four. We also describe the polynomial ideals associated to these natural symmetric tensor norms. Using a symmetric version of a result of Carne, we establish which natural symmetric tensor norms preserve Banach algebras.

The symmetric Radon-Nikodým property for tensor norms

We introduce the symmetric-Radon-Nikodým property (sRN property) for finitely generated s-tensor norms ββ of order nn and prove a Lewis type theorem for s-tensor norms with this property. As a consequence, if ββ is a projective s-tensor norm with the sRN property, then for every Asplund space EE, the canonical map ⊗~βn,sE′→(⊗~β′n,sE)′\widetilde{\otimes}_β^{n,s} E' \to \Big(\widetilde{\otimes}_{β'}^{n,s} E \Big)' is a metric surjection. This can be rephrased as the isometric isomorphism Qmin(E)=Q(E)\mathcal{Q}^{min}(E) = \mathcal{Q}(E) for certain polynomial ideal $\Q$. We also relate the sRN property of an s-tensor norm with the Asplund or Radon-Nikodým properties of different tensor products. Similar results for full tensor products are also given. As an application, results concerning the ideal of nn-homogeneous extendible polynomials are obtained, as well as a new proof of the well known isometric isomorphism between nuclear and integral polynomials on Asplund spaces.

Unconditionality in tensor products and ideals of polynomials, multilinear forms and operators

We study tensor norms that destroy unconditionality in the following sense: for every Banach space EE with unconditional basis, the nn-fold tensor product of EE (with the corresponding tensor norm) does not have unconditional basis. We establish an easy criterion to check weather a tensor norm destroys unconditionality or not. Using this test we get that all injective and projective tensor norms different from ε\varepsilon and ππ destroy unconditionality, both in full and symmetric tensor products. We present applications to polynomial ideals: we show that many usual polynomial ideals never enjoy the Gordon-Lewis property. We also consider the unconditionality of the monomial basic sequence. Analogous problems for multilinear and operator ideals are addressed.
