The nonlinear fractional diffusion equations with Nagumo-type sources and perturbed orders

We consider a class of nonlinear fractional equations having the Caputo fractional derivative of the time variable $t$, the fractional order of the self-adjoint positive definite unbounded operator in a Hilbert space and a singular nonlinear source. These equations are generalizations of some well-known fractional equation such as the fractional Cahn-Allen equation, the fractional Burger equation, the fractional Cahn-Hilliard equation, the fractional Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, etc. We study both the initial value and the final value problem. Under some suitable assumptions, we investigate the existence, uniqueness of maximal solution, and stability of solution of the problems with respect to perturbed fractional orders. For $t=0$, we show that the final value problem is instable and deduce that the problem is ill-posed. A regularization method is proposed to recover the initial data from the inexact fractional orders and the final data. By some regularity assumptions of the exact solutions of the problems, we obtain an error estimate of Hölder type.

A Two Dimensional Backward Heat Problem With Statistical Discrete Data

In this paper, we focus on the backward heat problem of finding the function $θ(x,y)=u(x,y,0)$ such that \[ {l l l} u_t - a(t)(u_{xx} + u_{yy}) & = f(x,y,t), & \qquad (x,y,t) \in Ω\times (0,T), u(x,y,T) & = h(x,y), & \qquad (x,y) \in\barΩ. \] where $Ω= (0,π) \times (0,π)$ and the heat transfer coefficient $a(t)$ is known. In our problem, the source $f = f(x,y,t)$ and the final data $h(x,y)$ are unknown. We only know random noise data $g_{ij}(t)$ and $d_{ij}$ satisfying the regression models g_{ij}(t) &=& f(x_i,y_j,t) + \varthetaξ_{ij}(t), d_{ij} &=& h(x_i,y_j) + σ_{ij}ε_{ij}, where $ξ_{ij}(t)$ are Brownian motions, $ε_{ij}\sim \mathcal{N}(0,1)$, $(x_i,y_j)$ are grid points of $Ω$ and $σ_{ij}, \vartheta$ are unknown positive constants. The noises $ξ_{ij}(t), ε_{ij}$ are mutually independent. From the known data $g_{ij}(t)$ and $d_{ij}$, we can recovery the initial temperature $θ(x,y)$. However, the result thus obtained is not stable and the problem is severely ill--posed. To regularize the instable solution, we use the trigonometric method in nonparametric regression associated with the truncated expansion method. In addition, convergence rate is also investigated numerically.

Approximation of mild solutions of the linear and nonlinear elliptic equations

In this paper, we investigate the Cauchy problem for both linear and semi-linear elliptic equations. In general, the equations have the form \[ \frac{\partial^{2}}{\partial t^{2}}u\left(t\right)=\mathcal{A}u\left(t\right)+f\left(t,u\left(t\right)\right),\quad t\in\left[0,T\right], \] where $\mathcal{A}$ is a positive-definite, self-adjoint operator with compact inverse. As we know, these problems are well-known to be ill-posed. On account of the orthonormal eigenbasis and the corresponding eigenvalues related to the operator, the method of separation of variables is used to show the solution in series representation. Thereby, we propose a modified method and show error estimations in many accepted cases. For illustration, two numerical examples, a modified Helmholtz equation and an elliptic sine-Gordon equation, are constructed to demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed method.

Ice formation in the Arctic during summer: false-bottoms

The only source of ice formation in the Arctic during summer is a layer of ice called false-bottoms between an under-ice melt pond and the underlying ocean. Of interest is to give a mathematical model in order to determine the simultaneous growth and ablation of false-bottoms, which is governed by both of heat fluxes and salt fluxes. In one dimension, this problem may be considered mathematically as a two-phase Stefan problem with two free boundaries. Our main result is to prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution from the initial condition.

The body force in a three-dimensional Lame' system: identification and regularization

Let a three-dimensional isotropic elastic body be described by the Lamé system with the body force of the form $F(x,t)=ϕ(t)f(x)$, where $ϕ$ is known. We consider the problem of determining the unknown spatial term $f(x)$ of the body force where the surface stress history is given as the overdetermination. This inverse problem is ill-posed. Using the interpolation method and truncated Fourier series, we construct a regularized solution from approximate data and provide explicit error estimates. AMS 2010 Subject Classification: 35L20, 35R30. Keywords: Body force, elastic, ill$-$posed problem, interpolation, Fourier series.

Laguerre polynomials and the inverse Laplace transform using discrete data

We consider the problem of finding a function defined on $(0,\infty)$ from a countable set of values of its Laplace transform. The problem is severely ill-posed. We shall use the expansion of the function in a series of Laguerre polynomials to convert the problem in an analytic interpolation problem. Then, using the coefficients of Lagrange polynomials we shall construct a stable approximation solution.
