Asymptotics of the deformed Fredholm determinant of the confluent hypergeometric kernel

In this paper, we consider the deformed Fredholm determinant of the confluent hypergeometric kernel. This determinant represents the gap probability of the corresponding determinantal point process where each particle is removed independently with probability $1- γ$, $0 \leq γ<1$. We derive asymptotics of the deformed Fredholm determinant when the gap interval tends to infinity, up to and including the constant term. As an application of our results, we establish a central limit theorem for the eigenvalue counting function and a global rigidity upper bound for its maximum deviation.

On the deformed Pearcey determinant

In this paper, we are concerned with the deformed Pearcey determinant $\det\left(I-γK^{\mathrm{Pe}}_{s,ρ}\right)$, where $0 \leq γ<1$ and $K^{\mathrm{Pe}}_{s,ρ}$ stands for the trace class operator acting on $L^2\left(-s, s\right)$ with the classical Pearcey kernel arising from random matrix theory. This determinant corresponds to the gap probability for the Pearcey process after thinning, which means each particle in the Pearcey process is removed independently with probability $1-γ$. We establish an integral representation of the deformed Pearcey determinant involving the Hamiltonian associated with a family of special solutions to a system of nonlinear differential equations. Together with some remarkable differential identities for the Hamiltonian, this allows us to obtain the large gap asymptotics, including the exact calculation of the constant term, which complements our previous work on the undeformed case (i.e., $γ=1$). It comes out that the deformed Pearcey determinant exhibits a significantly different asymptotic behavior from the undeformed case, which suggests a transition will occur as the parameter $γ$ varies. As an application of our results, we obtain the asymptotics for the expectation and variance of the counting function for the Pearcey process, and a central limit theorem as well.

Graph-based Visual-Semantic Entanglement Network for Zero-shot Image Recognition

Zero-shot learning uses semantic attributes to connect the search space of unseen objects. In recent years, although the deep convolutional network brings powerful visual modeling capabilities to the ZSL task, its visual features have severe pattern inertia and lack of representation of semantic relationships, which leads to severe bias and ambiguity. In response to this, we propose the Graph-based Visual-Semantic Entanglement Network to conduct graph modeling of visual features, which is mapped to semantic attributes by using a knowledge graph, it contains several novel designs: 1. it establishes a multi-path entangled network with the convolutional neural network (CNN) and the graph convolutional network (GCN), which input the visual features from CNN to GCN to model the implicit semantic relations, then GCN feedback the graph modeled information to CNN features; 2. it uses attribute word vectors as the target for the graph semantic modeling of GCN, which forms a self-consistent regression for graph modeling and supervise GCN to learn more personalized attribute relations; 3. it fuses and supplements the hierarchical visual-semantic features refined by graph modeling into visual embedding. Our method outperforms state-of-the-art approaches on multiple representative ZSL datasets: AwA2, CUB, and SUN by promoting the semantic linkage modelling of visual features.

Inner-Imaging Networks: Put Lenses into Convolutional Structure

Despite the tremendous success in computer vision, deep convolutional networks suffer from serious computation costs and redundancies. Although previous works address this issue by enhancing diversities of filters, they have not considered the complementarity and the completeness of the internal structure of the convolutional network. To deal with these problems, a novel Inner-Imaging architecture is proposed in this paper, which allows relationships between channels to meet the above requirement. Specifically, we organize the channel signal points in groups using convolutional kernels to model both the intra-group and inter-group relationships simultaneously. The convolutional filter is a powerful tool for modeling spatial relations and organizing grouped signals, so the proposed methods map the channel signals onto a pseudo-image, like putting a lens into convolution internal structure. Consequently, not only the diversity of channels is increased, but also the complementarity and completeness can be explicitly enhanced. The proposed architecture is lightweight and easy to be implemented. It provides an efficient self-organization strategy for convolutional networks so as to improve their efficiency and performance. Extensive experiments are conducted on multiple benchmark image recognition data sets including CIFAR, SVHN and ImageNet. Experimental results verify the effectiveness of the Inner-Imaging mechanism with the most popular convolutional networks as the backbones.

Asymptotics of Fredholm determinant associated with the Pearcey kernel

The Pearcey kernel is a classical and universal kernel arising from random matrix theory, which describes the local statistics of eigenvalues when the limiting mean eigenvalue density exhibits a cusp-like singularity. It appears in a variety of statistical physics models beyond matrix models as well. We consider the Fredholm determinant of a trace class operator acting on $L^2\left(-s, s\right)$ with the Pearcey kernel. Based on a steepest descent analysis for a $3\times 3$ matrix-valued Riemann-Hilbert problem, we obtain asymptotics of the Fredholm determinant as $s\to +\infty$, which is also interpreted as large gap asymptotics in the context of random matrix theory.

Multiple Attentional Pyramid Networks for Chinese Herbal Recognition

Chinese herbs play a critical role in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Due to different recognition granularity, they can be recognized accurately only by professionals with much experience. It is expected that they can be recognized automatically using new techniques like machine learning. However, there is no Chinese herbal image dataset available. Simultaneously, there is no machine learning method which can deal with Chinese herbal image recognition well. Therefore, this paper begins with building a new standard Chinese-Herbs dataset. Subsequently, a new Attentional Pyramid Networks (APN) for Chinese herbal recognition is proposed, where both novel competitive attention and spatial collaborative attention are proposed and then applied. APN can adaptively model Chinese herbal images with different feature scales. Finally, a new framework for Chinese herbal recognition is proposed as a new application of APN. Experiments are conducted on our constructed dataset and validate the effectiveness of our methods.

On integrals of the tronquée solutions and the associated Hamiltonians for the Painlevé II equation

We consider a family of tronquée solutions of the Painelvé II equation \begin{equation*} q''(s)=2q(s)^3+sq(s)-(2α+\frac12), \qquad α> -\frac12, \end{equation*} which is characterized by the Stokes multipliers $$s_1=-e^{-2απi },\quad s_2=ω, \quad s_3=-e^{2 απi} $$ with $ω$ being a free parameter. These solutions include the well-known generalized Hastings-McLeod solution as a special case if $ω=0$. We derive asymptotics of integrals of the tronquée solutions and the associated Hamiltonians over the real axis for $α> -1/2$ and $ω\geq 0$, with the constant terms evaluated explicitly. Our results agree with those already known in the literature if the parameters $α$ and $ω$ are chosen to be special values. Some applications of our results in random matrix theory are also discussed.

Automatic construction of Chinese herbal prescription from tongue image via CNNs and auxiliary latent therapy topics

The tongue image provides important physical information of humans. It is of great importance for diagnoses and treatments in clinical medicine. Herbal prescriptions are simple, noninvasive and have low side effects. Thus, they are widely applied in China. Studies on the automatic construction technology of herbal prescriptions based on tongue images have great significance for deep learning to explore the relevance of tongue images for herbal prescriptions, it can be applied to healthcare services in mobile medical systems. In order to adapt to the tongue image in a variety of photographic environments and construct herbal prescriptions, a neural network framework for prescription construction is designed. It includes single/double convolution channels and fully connected layers. Furthermore, it proposes the auxiliary therapy topic loss mechanism to model the therapy of Chinese doctors and alleviate the interference of sparse output labels on the diversity of results. The experiment use the real world tongue images and the corresponding prescriptions and the results can generate prescriptions that are close to the real samples, which verifies the feasibility of the proposed method for the automatic construction of herbal prescriptions from tongue images. Also, it provides a reference for automatic herbal prescription construction from more physical information.

Hankel determinants for a singular complex weight and the first and third Painlevé transcendents

In this paper, we consider polynomials orthogonal with respect to a varying perturbed Laguerre weight $e^{-n(z-\log z+t/z)}$ for $t<0$ and $z$ on certain contours in the complex plane. When the parameters $n$, $t$ and the degree $k$ are fixed, the Hankel determinant for the singular complex weight is shown to be the isomonodromy $τ$-function of the Painlevé III equation. When the degree $k=n$, $n$ is large and $t$ is close to a critical value, inspired by the study of the Wigner time delay in quantum transport, we show that the double scaling asymptotic behaviors of the recurrence coefficients and the Hankel determinant are described in terms of a Boutroux tronquée solution to the Painlevé I equation. Our approach is based on the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method for Riemann-Hilbert problems.

Uniform Asymptotics of Orthogonal Polynomials Arising from Coherent States

In this paper, we study a family of orthogonal polynomials $\{ϕ_n(z)\}$ arising from nonlinear coherent states in quantum optics. Based on the three-term recurrence relation only, we obtain a uniform asymptotic expansion of $ϕ_n(z)$ as the polynomial degree $n$ tends to infinity. Our asymptotic results suggest that the weight function associated with the polynomials has an unusual singularity, which has never appeared for orthogonal polynomials in the Askey scheme. Our main technique is the Wang and Wong's difference equation method. In addition, the limiting zero distribution of the polynomials $ϕ_n(z)$ is provided.

Critical edge behavior and the Bessel to Airy transition in the singularly perturbed Laguerre unitary ensemble

In this paper, we study the singularly perturbed Laguerre unitary ensemble $$ \frac{1}{Z_n} (\det M)^αe^{- \textrm{tr}\, V_t(M)}dM, \qquad α>0, $$ with $V_t(x) = x + t/x$, $x\in (0,+\infty)$ and $t>0$. Due to the effect of $t/x$ for varying $t$, the eigenvalue correlation kernel has a new limit instead of the usual Bessel kernel at the hard edge 0. This limiting kernel involves $ψ$-functions associated with a special solution to a new third-order nonlinear differential equation, which is then shown equivalent to a particular Painlevé III equation. The transition of this limiting kernel to the Bessel and Airy kernels is also studied when the parameter $t$ changes in a finite interval $(0, d]$. Our approach is based on Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method for Riemann-Hilbert problems.

Painlevé III asymptotics of Hankel determinants for a singularly perturbed Laguerre weight

In this paper, we consider the Hankel determinants associated with the singularly perturbed Laguerre weight $w(x)=x^αe^{-x-t/x}$, $x\in (0, \infty)$, $t>0$ and $α>0$. When the matrix size $n\to\infty$, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the Hankel determinants, valid uniformly for $t\in (0, d]$, $d>0$ fixed. A particular Painlevé III transcendent is involved in the approximation, as well as in the large-$n$ asymptotics of the leading coefficients and recurrence coefficients for the corresponding perturbed Laguerre polynomials. The derivation is based on the asymptotic results in an earlier paper of the authors, obtained by using the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method.

Existence and Uniqueness of Tronquée Solutions of the Third and Fourth Painlevé Equations

It is well-known that the first and second Painlevé equations admit solutions characterised by divergent asymptotic expansions near infinity in specified sectors of the complex plane. Such solutions are pole-free in these sectors and called tronquée solutions by Boutroux. In this paper, we show that similar solutions exist for the third and fourth Painlevé equations as well.

Plancherel-Rotach asymptotic expansion for some polynomials from indeterminate moment problems

We study the Plancherel--Rotach asymptotics of four families of orthogonal polynomials, the Chen--Ismail polynomials, the Berg-Letessier-Valent polynomials, the Conrad--Flajolet polynomials I and II. All these polynomials arise in indeterminate moment problems and three of them are birth and death process polynomials with cubic or quartic rates. We employ a difference equation asymptotic technique due to Z. Wang and R. Wong. Our analysis leads to a conjecture about large degree behavior of polynomials orthogonal with respect to solutions of indeterminate moment problems.

Painlevé VI and Hankel determinants for the generalized Jacobi Weight

We study the Hankel determinant of the generalized Jacobi weight $(x-t)^γx^α(1-x)^β$ for $x\in[0,1]$ with $α, β>0$, $t < 0 $ and $γ\in\mathbb{R}$. Based on the ladder operators for the corresponding monic orthogonal polynomials $P_n(x)$, it is shown that the logarithmic derivative of Hankel determinant is characterized by a $τ$-function for the Painlevé VI system.

Painleve IV asymptotics for orthogonal polynomials with respect to a modified Laguerre weight

We study polynomials that are orthogonal with respect to the modified Laguerre weight $z^{-n + ν} e^{-Nz} (z-1)^{2b}$ in the limit where $n, N \to \infty$ with $N/n \to 1$ and $ν$ is a fixed number in $\mathbb{R} \setminus \mathbb{N}_0$. With the effect of the factor $(z-1)^{2b}$, the local parametrix near the critical point $z =1$ can be constructed in terms of $Ψ$-functions associated with the Painleve IV equation. We show that the asymptotics of the recurrence coefficients of orthogonal polynomials can be described in terms of specified solution of the Painleve IV equation in the double scaling limit. Our method is based on the Deift/Zhou steepest decent analysis of the Riemann-Hilbert problem associated with orthogonal polynomials.

Painlevé V and a Pollaczek-Jacobi type orthogonal polynomials

We study a sequence of polynomials orthogonal with respect to a one parameter family of weights $$ w(x):=w(x,t)=\rex^{-t/x}\:x^{\al}(1-x)^{\bt},\quad t\geq 0, $$ defined for $x\in[0,1].$ If $t=0,$ this reduces to a shifted Jacobi weight. Our ladder operator formalism and the associated compatibility conditions give an easy determination of the recurrence coefficients. For $t>0,$ the factor $\rex^{-t/x}$ induces an infinitely strong zero at $x=0.$ With the aid of the compatibility conditions, the recurrence coefficients are expressed in terms of a set of auxiliary quantities that satisfy a system of difference equations. These, when suitably combined with a pair of Toda-like equations derived from the orthogonality principle, show that the auxiliary quantities are a particular Painlevé V and/or allied functions. It is also shown that the logarithmic derivative of the Hankel determinant, $$ D_n(t):=\det(\int_{0}^{1} x^{i+j} \:\rex^{-t/x}\:x^{\al}(1-x)^{\bt}dx)_{i,j=0}^{n-1}, $$ satisfies the Jimbo-Miwa-Okamoto $σ-$form of the Painlevé V and that the same quantity satisfies a second order non-linear difference equation which we believe to be new.
