Improved characterization of Feshbach resonances and interaction potentials between $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb atoms

The ultracold mixture of \Na and \Rb atoms has become an important system for investigating physics in Bose-Bose atomic mixtures and for forming ultracold ground-state polar molecules. In this work, we provide an improved characterization of the most commonly used Feshbach resonance near 347.64 G between \Na and \Rb in their absolute ground states. We form Feshbach molecules using this resonance and measure their binding energies by dissociating them via magnetic field modulation. We use the binding energies to refine the singlet and triplet potential energy curves, using coupled-channel bound-state calculations. We then use coupled-channel scattering calculations on the resulting potentials to produce a high-precision mapping between magnetic field and scattering length. We also observe 10 additional $s$-wave Feshbach resonances for \Na and \Rb in different combinations of Zeeman sublevels of the $F = 1$ hyperfine states. Some of the resonances show 2-body inelastic decay due to spin exchange. We compare the resonance properties with coupled-channel scattering calculations that full take account of inelastic properties.

Lee-Huang-Yang effects in the ultracold mixture of $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb with attractive interspecies interactions

The beyond-mean-field Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) correction is ubiquitous in dilute ultracold quantum gases. However, its effects are often elusive due to the typically much larger influence of the mean-field energy. In this work, we study an ultracold mixture of $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb with tunable attractive interspecies interactions. The LHY effects manifest in the formation of self-bound quantum liquid droplets and the expansion dynamics of the gas-phase sample. A liquid-to-gas phase diagram is obtained by measuring the critical atom numbers below which the self-bound behavior disappears. In stark contrast to trapped gas-phase condensates, the gas-phase mixture formed following the liquid-to-gas phase transition shows an anomalous expansion featuring a larger release energy for increasing mean-field attractions.

Seconds-scale coherence on nuclear spin transitions of ultracold polar molecules in 3D optical lattices

Ultracold polar molecules (UPMs) are emerging as a novel and powerful platform for fundamental applications in quantum science. Here, we report characterization of the coherence between nuclear spin levels of ultracold ground-state sodium-rubidium molecules loaded into a 3D optical lattice with a nearly photon scattering limited trapping lifetime of 9(1) seconds. After identifying and compensating the main sources of decoherence, we achieve a maximum nuclear spin coherence time of $T_2^* = 3.3(6)$~s with two-photon Ramsey spectroscopy. Furthermore, based on the understanding of the main factor limiting the coherence of the two-photon Rabi transition, we obtain a Rabi lineshape with linewidth below 0.8 Hz. The simultaneous realization of long lifetime and coherence time, and ultra-high spectroscopic resolution in our system unveils the great potentials of UPMs in quantum simulation, computation, and metrology.

Manipulation of heteronuclear spin dynamics with microwave and vector light shift

We report the observation and manipulation of heteronuclear spin dynamics in a spin-1 mixture of ultracold $^{87}$Rb and $^{23}$Na atoms. The dynamics is driven by the interspecies spin-dependent interaction and shows a pronounced dependence on magnetic fields with influences from both linear and quadratic Zeeman shifts. Similar to the well-studied homonuclear cases, the interspecies spin dynamics can be controlled by tuning the quadratic Zeeman shift with far-detuned microwave fields. In addition, we successfully realize spin dynamics control with vector light shifts which act as a species-selective effective magnetic field on $^{87}$Rb atoms. Both methods show negligible loss of atoms thus will be powerful techniques for investigating spin dynamics with fast temporal and high spatial resolutions.

Observation of resonant dipolar collisions in ultracold $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb rotational mixtures

We report the investigation on dipolar collisions in rotational state mixtures of ultracold bosonic $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb molecules. The large resonant dipole-dipole interaction between molecules in rotational states of opposite parities brings about significant modifications to their collisions, even when an electric field is not present. In this work, this effect is revealed by measuring the dramatically enhanced two-body loss rate constants in the mixtures. In addition, the dipolar interaction strength can be tuned by preparing the NaRb mixture in different rotational levels with microwave spectroscopy. When the rotational level combination is not of the lowest energy, contributions from hyperfine changing collisions are also observed. Our measured loss rate constants are in good agreement with a quantum close-coupling calculation which we also present in full detail.

Creation of an ultracold gas of ground-state $^{23}\rm{Na}^{87}\rm{Rb}$ molecules

We report the successful production of an ultracold sample of absolute ground-state $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb molecules. Starting from weakly-bound Feshbach molecules formed via magneto-association, the lowest rovibrational and hyperfine level of the electronic ground state is populated following a high efficiency and high resolution two-photon Raman process. The high purity absolute ground-state samples have up to 8000 molecules and densities of over $10^{11}$ cm$^{-3}$. By measuring the Stark shifts induced by external electric fields, we determined the permanent electric dipole moment of the absolute ground-state $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb and demonstrated the capability of inducing an effective dipole moment over one Debye. Bimolecular reaction between ground-state $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb molecules is endothermic, but we still observed a rather fast decay of the molecular sample. Our results pave the way toward investigation of ultracold molecular collisions in a fully controlled manner, and possibly to quantum gases of ultracold bosonic molecules with strong dipolar interactions.

Long-range states of the NaRb molecule near the Na($3^2S_{1/2}$)+Rb($5^2P_{3/2}$) asymptote

We report a high-resolution spectroscopic investigation of the long-range states of the $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb molecule near its Na($3^2S_{1/2}$)+Rb($5^2P_{3/2}$) asymptote. This study was performed with weakly bound ultracold molecules produced via magneto-association with an inter-species Feshbach resonance. We observed several regular vibrational series, which are assigned to the 5 attractive long-range states correlated with this asymptote. The vibrational levels of two of these states have sharp but complex structures due to hyperfine and Zeeman interactions. For the other states, we observed significant linewidth broadenings due to strong predissociation caused by spin-orbit couplings with states correlated to the lower Na($3^2S_{1/2}$)+Rb($5^2P_{1/2}$) asymptote. The long-range $C_6$ van der Waals coefficients extracted from our spectrum are in good agreement with theoretical values.

Magnetic field induced dynamical instabilities in an anti-ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

We theoretically investigate four types of dynamical instability, in particular the periodic and oscillatory type $I_O$, in an anti-ferromagnetic spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate in a nonzero magnetic field, by employing the coupled-mode theory and numerical method. This is in sharp contrast to the dynamical stability of the same system in zero field. Remarkably, a pattern transition from a periodic dynamical instability $I_O$ to a uniform one $III_O$ occurs at a critical magnetic field. All the four types of dynamical instability and the pattern transition are ready to be detected in $^{23}$Na condensates within the availability of the current experimental techniques.

A double species $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb Bose-Einstein condensate with tunable miscibility via an interspecies Feshbach resonance

We have realized a dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb atoms and observed their immiscibility. Because of the favorable background intra- and inter-species scattering lengths, stable condensates can be obtained via efficient evaporative cooling and sympathetic cooling without the need for fine tuning of the interactions. Our system thus provides a clean platform for studying inter-species interactions driven effects in superfluid mixtures. With a Feshbach resonance, we have successfully created double BECs with largely tunable inter-species interactions and studied the miscible-immiscible phase transition.

Coherent heteronuclear spin dynamics in an ultracold spin-1 mixture

We report the observation of coherent heteronuclear spin dynamics driven by inter-species spin-spin interaction in an ultracold spinor mixture, which manifests as periodical and well correlated spin oscillations between two atomic species. In particular, we investigate the magnetic field dependence of the oscillations and find a resonance behavior which depends on {\em both} the linear and quadratic Zeeman effects and the spin-dependent interaction. We also demonstrate a unique knob for controlling the spin dynamics in the spinor mixture with species-dependent vector light shifts. Our finds are in agreement with theoretical simulations without any fitting parameters.

Coherent spin mixing dynamics in thermal $^{87}$Rb spin-1 and spin-2 gases

We study the non-equilibrium coherent spin mixing dynamics in ferromagnetic spin-1 and antiferromagnetic spin-2 thermal gases of ultracold $^{87}$Rb atoms. Long lasting spin population oscillations with magnetic field dependent resonances are observed in both cases. Our observations are well reproduced by Boltzmann equations of the Wigner distribution function. Compared to the equation of motion of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates, the only difference here is a factor of two increase in the spin-dependent interaction, which is confirmed directly in the spin-2 case by measuring the relation between the oscillation amplitude and the sample's density.

Formation of Ultracold NaRb Feshbach Molecules

We report the creation of ultracold bosonic $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb Feshbach molecules via magneto-association. By ramping the magnetic field across an interspecies Feshbach resonance, at least 4000 molecules can be produced out of the near degenerate ultracold mixture. Fast loss due to inelastic atom-molecule collisions is observed, which limits the pure molecule number, after residual atoms removal, to 1700. The pure molecule sample can live for 21.8(8) ms in the optical trap, long enough for future molecular spectroscopy studies toward coherently transferring to the singlet ro-vibrational ground state, where these molecules are stable against chemical reaction and have a permanent electric dipole moment of 3.3 Debye. We have also measured the Feshbach molecule's binding energy near the Feshbach resonance by the oscillating magnetic field method and found these molecules have a large closed-channel fraction.

Observation of Feshbach resonances between ultracold Na and Rb atoms

We have successfully prepared an optically trapped ultracold mixture of $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb atoms and studied their interspecies Feshbach resonances. Using two different spin combinations, several s-wave and p-wave resonances are identified by observing a high inelastic loss and a temperature rising for both species near resonant magnetic field values. The two s-wave resonances observed below 500 G between atoms in the lowest energy level are possible candidates for Feshbach molecule association. Our results are well characterized by a coupled-channel model and are used refining the ground state interaction potentials between $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb. This work opens up the prospect for preparing ultracold ensembles of ground-state bosonic NaRb molecules which are chemically stable and can provide strong dipolar interactions.

Production of a rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate in a hybrid trap with light induced atom desorption

We report on the production of a rubidium Bose-Einstein condensate in a simplified vacuum apparatus. Magneto-optical traps with large numbers and ultra-high vacuum for moderately long conservative trap lifetimes of 16 seconds are sequentially obtained with light induced rapid atomic vapor pressure modulation. Subsequent evaporative cooling is carried out in two stages in a hybrid magnetic quadrupole plus optical dipole trap. High evaporation efficiencies are observed in both stages and $^{87}$Rb BECs with more than 10$^5$ atoms can be reliably produced with total evaporation time of only 9.5 seconds.
