Bogoliubov-de Gennes Soliton Dynamics in Unconventional Fermi Superfluids

Exact self-consistent soliton dynamics based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) formalism in unconventional Fermi superfluids/superconductors possessing an $SU(d)$-symmetric two-body interaction is presented. The derivation is based on the ansatz having the similar form as the Gelfand-Levitan-Marchenko equation in the inverse scattering theory. Our solutions can be regarded as a multicomponent generalization of the solutions recently derived by Dunne and Thies [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 121602 (2013)]. We also propose superpositions of occupation states, which make it possible to realize various filling rates even in one-flavor systems, and include Dirac and Majorana fermions. The soliton solutions in the $ d=2 $ systems, which describe the mixture of singlet $s$-wave and triplet $p$-wave superfluids, exhibit a variety of phenomena such as SU(2)-DHN breathers, Majorana triplet states, $s$-$p$ mixed dynamics, and so on. These solutions are illustrated by animations, where order parameters are visualized by spherical harmonic functions. The full formulation of the BdG theory is also supported, and the double-counting problem of BdG eigenstates and $N$-flavor generalization are discussed.

Exhaustive derivation of static self-consistent multi-soliton solutions in the matrix Bogoliubov-de Gennes systems

The matrix-generalized Bogoliubov-de Gennes systems have recently been considered by the present author [arXiv:1509.04242, Phys. Rev. B 93, 024512 (2016)], and time-dependent and self-consistent multi-soliton solutions have been constructed based on the ansatz method. In this paper, restricting the problem to the static case, we exhaustively determine the self-consistent solutions using the inverse scattering theory. Solving the gap equation, we rigorously prove that the self-consistent potential must be reflectionless. As a supplementary topic, we elucidate the relation between the stationary self-consistent potentials and the soliton solutions in the matrix nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Asymptotic formulae of multi-soliton solutions for sufficiently isolated solitons are also presented.

An inequality for spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

An inequality for spin-$F$ Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) $ F^2(ρ^2-|Θ|^2)-\boldsymbol{M}^2\ge0 $ is reported, where $ρ$, $Θ$, and $\boldsymbol{M}$ represent the density, singlet pair amplitude, and magnetization vector, respectively. The distribution of high-symmetry spinors in the allowed region by the inequality is elucidated with using the Majorana representation. The result is illustrated by the example of spin-2 BECs.

Counting rule of Nambu-Goldstone modes for internal and spacetime symmetries: Bogoliubov theory approach

When continuous symmetry is spontaneously broken, there appear Nambu-Goldstone modes (NGMs) with linear and quadratic dispersion relations, which are called type-I and type-II, respectively. We propose a framework to count these modes including the coefficients of the dispersion relations with applying the standard Gross-Pitaevskii-Bogoliubov theory. Our method is mainly based on (i) zero-mode solutions of the Bogoliubov equation originated from spontaneous symmetry breaking and (ii) their generalized orthogonal relations, which naturally arises from well-known Bogoliubov transformations and is referred to as "$σ$-orthogonality" in this paper. Unlike previous works, our framework is applicable without any modification to the cases where there are additional zero modes, which do not have a symmetry origin, such as quasi-NGMs, and/or where spacetime symmetry is spontaneously broken in the presence of a topological soliton or a vortex. As a by-product of the formulation, we also give a compact summary for mathematics of bosonic Bogoliubov equations and Bogoliubov transformations, which becomes a foundation for any problem of Bogoliubov quasiparticles. The general results are illustrated by various examples in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). In particular, the result on the spin-3 BECs includes new findings such as a type-I-type-II transition and an increase of the type-II dispersion coefficient caused by a linearly-independent pair of zero modes.

Nambu-Goldstone Modes Propagating along Topological Defects: Kelvin and Ripple Modes from Small to Large Systems

Nambu-Goldstone modes associated with (topological) defects such as vortices and domain walls in (super)fluids are known to possess quadratic/non-integer dispersion relations in finite/infinite-size systems. Here, we report interpolating formulas connecting the dispersion relations in finite- and infinite-size systems for Kelvin modes along a quantum vortex and ripplons on a domain wall in superfluids. Our method can provide not only the dispersion relations but also the explicit forms of quasiparticle wavefunctions $(u,v)$. We find a complete agreement between the analytical formulas and numerical simulations. All these formulas are derived in a fully analytical way, and hence not empirical ones. We also discuss common structures in the derivation of these formulas and speculate on the general procedure.

Quasi-Nambu-Goldstone modes in nonrelativistic systems

When a continuous symmetry is spontaneously broken in nonrelativistic systems, there appear either type-I or type-II Nambu-Goldstone modes (NGMs) with linear or quadratic dispersion relation, respectively. When equation of motion or the potential term has an enhanced symmetry larger than that of Lagrangian or Hamiltonian, there can appear quasi-NGMs if it is spontaneously broken. We construct a theory to count the numbers of type-I and type-II quasi-NGMs and NGMs, when the potential term has a symmetry of a non-compact group. We show that the counting rule based on the Watanabe-Brauner matrix is valid only in the absence of quasi-NGMs because of non-hermitian generators, while that based on the Gram matrix [DT & MN, arXiv:1404.7696, Ann. Phys. 354, 101 (2015)] is still valid in the presence of quasi-NGMs. We show that there exist two types of type-II gapless modes, a genuine NGM generated by two conventional zero modes (ZMs) originated from the Lagrangian symmetry, and quasi-NGM generated by a coupling of one conventional ZMand one quasi-ZM, which is originated from the enhanced symmetry, or two quasi-ZMs. We find that, depending on the moduli, some NGMs can change to quasi-NGMs and vice versa with preserving the total number of gapless modes. The dispersion relations are systematically calculated by a perturbation theory. The general result is illustrated by the complex linear $O(N)$ model, containing the two types of type-II gapless modes and exhibiting the change between NGMs and quasi-NGMs.

On reflectionless nature of self-consistent multi-soliton solutions in Bogoliubov-de Gennes and chiral Gross-Neveu models

Recently the most general static self-consistent multi-soliton solutions in Bogoliubov-de Gennes and chiral Gross-Neveu systems are derived by the present authors [D. A. Takahashi and M. Nitta, Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 131601 (2013)]. Here we show a few complementary results, which were absent in the previous our work. We prove directly from the gap equation that the self-consistent solutions need to have reflectionless potentials. We also give the self-consistent condition for the system consisting of only right-movers, which is more used in high-energy physics.

Fermionic solutions of chiral Gross-Neveu and Bogoliubov-de Gennes systems in nonlinear Schrödinger hierarchy

The chiral Gross-Neveu model or equivalently the linearized Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation has been mapped to the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) hierarchy in the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur formalism by Correa, Dunne and Plyushchay. We derive the general expression for exact fermionic solutions for all gap functions in the arbitrary order of the NLS hierarchy. We also find that the energy spectrum of the n-th NLS hierarchy generally has n+1 gaps. As an illustration, we present the self-consistent two-complex-kink solution with four real parameters and two fermion bound states. The two kinks can be placed at any position and have phase shifts. When the two kinks are well separated, the fermion bound states are localized around each kink in most parameter region. When two kinks with phase shifts close to each other are placed at distance as short as possible, the both fermion bound states have two peaks at the two kinks, i.e., the delocalization of the bound states occurs.

Soliton-phonon scattering problem in 1D nonlinear Schrödinger systems with general nonlinearity

A scattering problem (or more precisely, a transmission-reflection problem) of linearized excitations in the presence of a dark soliton is considered in a one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger system with a general nonlinearity: $ \mathrm{i}\partial_t ϕ= -\partial_x^2 ϕ+ F(|ϕ|^2)ϕ$. If the system is interpreted as a Bose-Einstein condensate, the linearized excitation is a Bogoliubov phonon, and the linearized equation is the Bogoliubov equation. We exactly prove that the perfect transmission of the zero-energy phonon is suppressed at a critical state determined by Barashenkov's stability criterion [Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, (1996) 1193.], and near the critical state, the energy-dependence of the reflection coefficient shows a saddle-node type scaling law. The analytical results are well supported by numerical calculation for cubic-quintic nonlinearity. Our result gives an exact example of scaling laws of saddle-node bifurcation in time-reversible Hamiltonian systems. As a by-product of the proof, we also give all exact zero-energy solutions of the Bogoliubov equation and their finite energy extension.

One-Dimensional Integrable Spinor BECs Mapped to Matrix Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation and Solution of Bogoliubov Equation in These Systems

In this short note, we construct mappings from one-dimensional integrable spinor BECs to matrix nonlinear Schrödinger equation, and solve the Bogoliubov equation of these systems. A map of spin-$n$ BEC is constructed from the $2^n$-dimensional spinor representation of irreducible tensor operators of $so(2n+1)$. Solutions of Bogoliubov equation are obtained with the aid of the theory of squared Jost functions.
