High-energy studies of the 3HWC J1954+286 region: likely Gamma-ray detection of the supernova remnant G65.1+0.6

We carry out high-energy studies of the region of the Galactic TeV source 3HWC J1954+286, whose location coincides with those of PSR~J1954+2836 and supernova remnant (SNR) G65.1+0.6. Analyzing the GeV $γ$-ray data obtained with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) onboard {\it the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope}, we are able to separate the pulsar's emission from that of the region. Excess power-law--like emission of a $\sim 6σ$ significance level at the region is found, for which we explain as arising from the SNR~G65.1+0.6. Given the low-significance detection, either a hadronic or a leptonic model can provide a fit to the power-law spectrum. Considering the properties of the pulsar and the SNR, we discuss the possible origin of the TeV source, and suggest that it is likely the TeV halo associated with the pulsar.

Quality of Service (QoS) and Security Provisioning in Cooperative Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs)

Cooperative communication can improve communication quality in wireless communication networks through strategic relay selection. However, wireless cooperative communication networks are vulnerable to the attacks initiated on relays. Although applying authentication protocols can secure cooperative communication when the selected relay is malicious, better system throughput could be obtained without executing authentication protocol when the selected relay is free from attacker's attack. In this paper, a game theoretic approach is proposed to quantitatively analyze the attacking strategies of the attacker who chooses one relay to attack so as to make rational decision on relay selection and extent of applying authentication protocols, which reaches the trade-off between system security requirement and quality of service (QoS) in wireless cooperative communication networks.

Two successive magneto-structural transformations and their relation to enhanced magnetocaloric effect for Ni55.3Mn19.7Ga25 Heusler alloy

In the present work, two successive magneto-structural transformations (MSTs) consisting of martensitic and intermartensitic transitions have been reported in polycrystalline Ni55.8Mn18.1Ga26.1 Heusler alloy. Benefiting from the additional latent heat contributed from intermediate phase, this alloy exhibits a large transition entropy change ΔStr with the value of ~28 J/kg K. Moreover, the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) has been also evaluated in terms of Maxwell relation. For the magnetic field change of 3 T, it is found that the calculated value of refrigeration capacity for Ni55.8Mn18.1Ga26.1 attains to ~72 J/kg around room temperature, which significantly surpasses those obtained in many Ni-Mn based Heusler alloys. The mechanism underlying the enhanced MCE is believed to be responsible for these multiple transformations, which can sustain the pronounced isothermal entropy change ΔST over a relatively wide temperature interval.

A new variable for SRS plan quality evaluation based on normal tissue sparing: The Effect of Prescription Isodose Levels

Objectives: A new dosimetric variable, dose dropping speed (DDS), was proposed and used to evaluate normal tissue sparing among stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) plans with different prescription isodose lines. Methods: Forty plans were generated for 8 intracranial SRS cases, prescribing to isodose levels (IDLs) ranging from 50% to 90% in 10% increments. Whilst maintaining similar coverage and conformity, plans at different IDLs were evaluated in terms of normal tissue sparing using the proposed DDS. The DDS was defined as the greater decay coefficient in a double exponential decay fit of the dose drop-off outside the PTV, which models the steep portion of the drop-off. Provided that the prescription dose covers the whole PTV, a greater DDS indicates better normal tissue sparing. Results: Among all plans, the DDS was found the lowest for the prescription at 90% IDL and the highest for the prescription at 60% or 70%. Beam profile slope change in penumbra and its field size dependence were explored and given as the physical basis of the findings. Conclusions: A variable was proposed for SRS plan quality evaluation. Using this measure, prescriptions at 60% and 70% IDLs were found to provide best normal tissue sparing. Advances in knowledge: A new variable was proposed based on which normal tissue sparing was quantitatively evaluated, comparing different prescription IDLs in SRS.

Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior Close to a Quantum Critical Point in a Ferromagnetic State without Local Moments

A quantum critical point (QCP) occurs upon chemical doping of the weak itinerant ferromagnet Sc_{3.1}In. Remarkable for a system with no local moments, the QCP is accompanied by non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior, manifested in the logarithmic divergence of the specific heat both in the ferro- and the paramagnetic states. Sc_{3.1}In displays critical scaling and NFL behavior in the ferromagnetic state, akin to what had been observed only in f-electron, local moment systems. With doping, critical scaling is observed close to the QCP, as the critical exponents, and delta, gamma and beta have weak composition dependence, with delta nearly twice, and beta almost half of their respective mean-field values. The unusually large paramagnetic moment mu_PM~1.3 mu_B/F.U. is nearly composition-independent. Evidence for strong spin fluctuations, accompanying the QCP at x_c = 0.035 +- 0.005, may be ascribed to the reduced dimensionality of Sc_{3.1}In, associated with the nearly one-dimensional Sc-In chains.

Quenching nitrogen-vacancy center photoluminescence with infrared pulsed laser

Diamond nanocrystals containing Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) color centers have been used in recent years as fluorescent probes for near-field and cellular imaging. In this work we report that an infrared (IR) pulsed excitation beam can quench the photoluminescence of NV color center in a diamond nanocrystal (size < 50 nm) with an extinction ratio as high as ~90%. We attribute this effect to the heating of the nanocrystal consecutive to multi-photon absorption by the diamond matrix. This quenching is reversible: the photoluminescence intensity goes back to its original value when the IR laser beam is turned off, with a typical response time of hundred picoseconds, allowing for a fast control of NV color center photoluminescence. We used this effect to achieve sub-diffraction limited imaging of fluorescent diamond nanocrystals on a coverglass. For that, as in Ground State Depletion super-resolution technique, we combined the green excitation laser beam with the control IR depleting one after shaping its intensity profile in a doughnut form, so that the emission comes only from the sub-wavelength size central part.

Strong Coupling of a Spin Ensemble to a Superconducting Resonator

We report the realization of a quantum circuit in which an ensemble of electronic spins is coupled to a frequency tunable superconducting resonator. The spins are Nitrogen-Vacancy centers in a diamond crystal. The achievement of strong coupling is manifested by the appearance of a vacuum Rabi splitting in the transmission spectrum of the resonator when its frequency is tuned through the NV center electron spin resonance.
