Evidence for a common physical description of non-Fermi-liquid behavior in f-electron systems

The non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior observed in the low temperature specific heat C(T)C(T) and magnetic susceptibility χ(T)χ(T) of f-electron systems is analyzed within the context of a recently developed theory based on Griffiths singularities. Measurements of C(T)C(T) and χ(T)χ(T) in the systems Th1−xUxPd2Al3Th_{1-x}U_{x}Pd_{2}Al_{3}, Y1−xUxPd3Y_{1-x}U_{x}Pd_3, and UCu5−xMxUCu_{5-x}M_{x} (M = Pd, Pt) are found to be consistent with C(T)/T∝χ(T)∝T−1+λC(T)/T \propto χ(T) \propto T^{-1+λ} predicted by this model with λ<1λ<1 in the NFL regime. These results suggest that the NFL properties observed in a wide variety of f-electron systems can be described within the context of a common physical picture.

C-axis Josephson Tunneling Between YBCO and Pb: Direct Evidence for Mixed Order Parameter Symmetry in a High-T_c Superconductor

We report a new class of cc-axis Josephson tunneling experiments in which a conventional superconductor (Pb) is deposited across a single twin boundary of a YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} crystal. We measure the critical current as a function of magnitude and angle of magnetic field applied in the plane of the junction. In all samples, we observe a clear experimental signature of an order parameter phase shift across the twin boundary. These results provide strong evidence for mixed dd- and ss-wave pairing in YBCO, with a reversal in the sign of the ss-wave component across the twin boundary.

Microwave properties of (PrxY1−x)Ba2Cu3O7−δ(Pr_xY_{1-x})Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} : Influence of magnetic scattering

We report measurements of the surface impedance Zs=Rs+iXsZ_s=R_s+iX_s of (PrxY1−x)Ba2Cu3O7−δ(Pr_xY_{1-x})Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}, (x=0,0.15,0.23,0.3,0.4,0.5)(x=0,0.15,0.23,0.3,0.4,0.5). Increasing PrPr concentration leads to some striking results not observed in samples doped by non-magnetic constituents. The three principal features of the Rs(T)R_s(T) data - multiple structure in the transition, a high residual resistance and, at high PrPr concentrations, an upturn of the low TT data, are all characteristic of the influence of magnetic scattering on superconductivity, and appear to be common to materials where magnetism and superconductivity coexist. The low TT behavior of λ(T)λ(T) appears to change from TT to T4T^4 at large PrPr doping, and provides evidence of the influence of magnetic pairbreaking of the PrPr.
