Existentially closed W*-probability spaces

We study several model-theoretic aspects of W$^*$-probability spaces, that is, $σ$-finite von Neumann algebras equipped with a faithful normal state. We first study the existentially closed W$^*$-spaces and prove several structural results about such spaces, including that they are type III$_1$ factors that tensorially absorb the Araki-Woods factor $R_\infty$. We also study the existentially closed objects in the restricted class of W$^*$-probability spaces with Kirchberg's QWEP property, proving that $R_\infty$ itself is such an existentially closed space in this class. Our results about existentially closed probability spaces imply that the class of type III$_1$ factors forms a $\forall_2$-axiomatizable class. We show that for $λ\in (0,1)$, the class of III$_λ$ factors is not $\forall_2$-axiomatizable but is $\forall_3$-axiomatizable; this latter result uses a version of Keisler's Sandwich theorem adapted to continuous logic. Finally, we discuss some results around elementary equivalence of III$_λ$ factors. Using a result of Boutonnet, Chifan, and Ioana, we show that, for any $λ\in (0,1)$, there is a family of pairwise non-elementarily equivalent III$_λ$ factors of size continuum. While we cannot prove the same result for III$_1$ factors, we show that there are at least three pairwise non-elementarily equivalent III$_1$ factors by showing that the class of full factors is preserved under elementary equivalence.

Connes' bicentralizer problem for q-deformed Araki-Woods algebras

Let $(H_{\mathbf{R}}, U_t)$ be any strongly continuous orthogonal representation of $\mathbf{R}$ on a real (separable) Hilbert space $H_{\mathbf{R}}$. For any $q\in (-1,1)$, we denote by $Γ_q(H_{\mathbf{R}},U_t)^{\prime\prime}$ the $q$-deformed Araki-Woods algebra introduced by Shlyakhtenko and Hiai. In this paper, we prove that $Γ_q(H_{\mathbf{R}},U_t)^{\prime\prime}$ has trivial bicentralizer if it is a type $\rm III_1$ factor. In particular, we obtain that $Γ_q(H_{\mathbf{R}},U_t)^{\prime\prime}$ always admits a maximal abelian subalgebra that is the range of a faithful normal conditional expectation. Moreover, using Sniady's work, we derive that $Γ_q(H_{\mathbf{R}},U_t)^{\prime\prime}$ is a full factor provided that the weakly mixing part of $(H_{\mathbf{R}}, U_t)$ is nonzero.

Examples of property (T) II$_1$ factors with trivial fundamental group

In this article we provide the first examples of property (T) $\rm II_1$ factors $\mathcal N$ with trivial fundamental group, $\mathcal F (\mathcal N)=1$. Our examples arise as group factors $\mathcal N=\mathcal L(G)$ where $G$ belong to two distinct families of property (T) groups previously studied in the literature: the groups introduced by Valette in \cite{Va04} and the ones introduced recently in \cite{CDK19} using the Belegradek-Osin Rips construction from \cite{BO06}. In particular, our results provide a continuum of explicit pairwise non-isomorphic property (T) factors.

Asymptotic structure of free product von Neumann algebras

Let $(M, φ) = (M_1, φ_1) \ast (M_2, φ_2)$ be the free product of any $σ$-finite von Neumann algebras endowed with any faithful normal states. We show that whenever $Q \subset M$ is a von Neumann subalgebra with separable predual such that both $Q$ and $Q \cap M_1$ are the ranges of faithful normal conditional expectations and such that both the intersection $Q \cap M_1$ and the central sequence algebra $Q' \cap M^ω$ are diffuse (e.g. $Q$ is amenable), then $Q$ must sit inside $M_1$. This result generalizes the previous results of the first named author in [Ho14] and moreover completely settles the questions of maximal amenability and maximal property Gamma of the inclusion $M_1 \subset M$ in arbitrary free product von Neumann algebras.

Bi-exact groups, strongly ergodic actions and group measure space type III factors with no central sequence

We investigate the asymptotic structure of (possibly type III) crossed product von Neumann algebras $M = B \rtimes Γ$ arising from arbitrary actions $Γ\curvearrowright B$ of bi-exact discrete groups (e.g. free groups) on amenable von Neumann algebras. We prove a spectral gap rigidity result for the central sequence algebra $N' \cap M^ω$ of any nonamenable von Neumann subalgebra with normal expectation $N \subset M$. We use this result to show that for any strongly ergodic essentially free nonsingular action $Γ\curvearrowright (X, μ)$ of any bi-exact countable discrete group on a standard probability space, the corresponding group measure space factor ${\rm L}^\infty(X) \rtimes Γ$ has no nontrivial central sequence. Using recent results of Boutonnet-Ioana-Salehi Golsefidy [BISG15], we construct, for every $0 < λ\leq 1$, a type III$_λ$ strongly ergodic essentially free nonsingular action $\mathbf F_\infty \curvearrowright (X_λ, μ_λ)$ of the free group $\mathbf F_\infty$ on a standard probability space so that the corresponding group measure space type III$_λ$ factor ${\rm L}^\infty(X_λ, μ_λ) \rtimes \mathbf F_\infty$ has no nontrivial central sequence by our main result. In particular, we obtain the first examples of group measure space type III factors with no nontrivial central sequence.

Locally compact groups acting on trees, the type I conjecture and non-amenable von Neumann algebras

We address the problem to characterise closed type I subgroups of the automorphism group of a tree. Even in the well-studied case of Burger-Mozes' universal groups, non-type I criteria were unknown. We prove that a huge class of groups acting properly on trees are not of type I. In the case of Burger-Mozes groups, this yields a complete classification of type I groups among them. Our key novelty is the use of von Neumann algebraic techniques to prove the stronger statement that the group von Neumann algebra of the groups under consideration is non-amenable.

Free independence in ultraproduct von Neumann algebras and applications

The main result of this paper is a generalization of Popa's free independence result for subalgebras of ultraproduct ${\rm II_1}$ factors [Po95] to the framework of ultraproduct von Neumann algebras $(M^ω, φ^ω)$ where $(M, φ)$ is a $σ$-finite von Neumann algebra endowed with a faithful normal state satisfying $(M^φ)' \cap M = \mathbf{C} 1$. More precisely, we show that whenever $P_1, P_2 \subset M^ω$ are von Neumann subalgebras with separable predual that are globally invariant under the modular automorphism group $(σ_t^{φ^ω})$, there exists a unitary $v \in \mathcal U((M^ω)^{φ^ω})$ such that $P_1$ and $v P_2 v^*$ are $\ast$-free inside $M^ω$ with respect to the ultraproduct state $φ^ω$. Combining our main result with the recent work of Ando-Haagerup-Winsløw [AHW13], we obtain a new and direct proof, without relying on Connes-Tomita-Takesaki modular theory, that Kirchberg's quotient weak expectation property (QWEP) for von Neumann algebras is stable under free product. Finally, we obtain a new class of inclusions of von Neumann algebras with the relative Dixmier property.

Gamma stability in free product von Neumann algebras

Let $(M, φ) = (M_1, φ_1) \ast (M_2, φ_2)$ be a free product of arbitrary von Neumann algebras endowed with faithful normal states. Assume that the centralizer $M_1^{φ_1}$ is diffuse. We first show that any intermediate subalgebra $M_1 \subset Q \subset M$ which has nontrivial central sequences in $M$ is necessarily equal to $M_1$. Then we obtain a general structural result for all the intermediate subalgebras $M_1 \subset Q \subset M$ with expectation. We deduce that any diffuse amenable von Neumann algebra can be concretely realized as a maximal amenable subalgebra with expectation inside a full nonamenable type III$_1$ factor. This provides the first class of concrete maximal amenable subalgebras in the framework of type III factors. We finally strengthen all these results in the case of tracial free product von Neumann algebras.

Type III factors with unique Cartan decomposition

We prove that for any free ergodic nonsingular nonamenable action Γ \actson (X,μ) of all Γ in a large class of groups including all hyperbolic groups, the associated group measure space factor $L^\infty(X) \rtimes Γ$ has L^\infty(X) as its unique Cartan subalgebra, up to unitary conjugacy. This generalizes the probability measure preserving case that was established in [PV12]. We also prove primeness and indecomposability results for such crossed products, for the corresponding orbit equivalence relations and for arbitrary amalgamated free products $M_1 *_B M_2$ over a subalgebra B of type I.

A class of groups for which every action is W*-superrigid

We prove the uniqueness of the group measure space Cartan subalgebra in crossed products A \rtimes Γcovering certain cases where Γis an amalgamated free product over a non-amenable subgroup. In combination with Kida's work we deduce that if Σ< SL(3,\Z) denotes the subgroup of matrices g with g_31 = g_32 = 0, then any free ergodic probability measure preserving action of Γ= SL(3,\Z) *_ΣSL(3,\Z) is stably W*-superrigid. In the second part we settle a technical issue about the unitary conjugacy of group measure space Cartan subalgebras.

Invariant percolation and measured theory of nonamenable groups

Using percolation techniques, Gaboriau and Lyons recently proved that every countable, discrete, nonamenable group $Γ$ contains measurably the free group $\mathbf F_2$ on two generators: there exists a probability measure-preserving, essentially free, ergodic action of $\mathbf F_2$ on $([0, 1]^Γ, λ^Γ)$ such that almost every $Γ$-orbit of the Bernoulli shift splits into $\mathbf F_2$-orbits. A combination of this result and works of Ioana and Epstein shows that every countable, discrete, nonamenable group admits uncountably many non-orbit equivalent actions.
