The large level limit of Kazama-Suzuki models

Limits of families of conformal field theories are of interest in the context of AdS/CFT dualities. We explore here the large level limit of the two-dimensional N=(2,2) superconformal W_{n+1} minimal models that appear in the context of the supersymmetric higher-spin AdS3/CFT2 duality. These models are constructed as Kazama-Suzuki coset models of the form SU(n+1)/U(n). We determine a family of boundary conditions in the limit theories, and use the modular bootstrap to obtain the full bulk spectrum of N=2 super-W_{n+1} primaries in the theory. We also confirm the identification of this limit theory as the continuous orbifold C^n/U(n) that was discussed recently.

Limit theories and continuous orbifolds

Relativistic QFTs are in general defined by a collection of effective actions, describing the dynamics of quantum fields at different energy scales. The consequent natural idea of a space of theories is still a rather imprecise notion, since a detailed knowledge or a classification of QFTs is out of reach. In two dimensions the situation is in a better shape: in this context CFTs are under control in many instances, and we know sequences of rational theories emerging as end-points of RG flows. The present thesis explores the behaviour of sequences of rational two-dimensional CFTs when the central charge approaches its supremum. After a review of various notions useful to study limit theories, like the concept of averaged fields and the construction of continuous orbifolds, we analyse in detail the limit of sequences of N=2 supersymmetric CFTs that are connected by RG flows. The limit is not unique, since with extended Virasoro symmetry one can choose different scalings for the labels of the spectrum in the limit. We construct explicitly two c=3 CFTs emerging as the large level limit of minimal models, and we identify both of them: one is the N=2 CFT of two uncompactified free real bosons and two free real fermions, the other is its continuous orbifold by U(1). We compare spectrum, torus partition function, correlators and boundary conditions. The neatest interpretation of this result is given by studying the realisation of N=2 minimal models as gauged WZW models: taking the two different limits amounts to zooming into two different regions of the target-space geometry. At the end we speculate about possible extensions and generalisations.

The geometry of the limit of N=2 minimal models

We consider the limit of two-dimensional N=(2,2) superconformal minimal models when the central charge approaches c=3. Starting from a geometric description as non-linear sigma models, we show that one can obtain two different limit theories. One is the free theory of two bosons and two fermions, the other one is a continuous orbifold thereof. We substantiate this claim by detailed conformal field theory computations.

The limit of N=(2,2) superconformal minimal models

The limit of families of two-dimensional conformal field theories has recently attracted attention in the context of AdS/CFT dualities. In our work we analyse the limit of N=(2,2) superconformal minimal models when the central charge approaches c=3. The limiting theory is a non-rational N=(2,2) superconformal theory, in which there is a continuum of chiral primary fields. We determine the spectrum of the theory, the three-point functions on the sphere, and the disc one-point functions.

DBI analysis of generalised permutation branes

We investigate D-branes on the product GxG of two group manifolds described as Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten models. When the levels of the two groups coincide, it is well known that there exist permutation D-branes which are twisted by the automorphism exchanging the two factors. When the levels are different, the D-brane charge group demands that there should be generalisations of these permutation D-branes, and a geometric construction for them was proposed in hep-th/0509153. We give further evidence for this proposal by showing that the generalised permutation D-branes satisfy the Dirac-Born-Infeld equations of motion for arbitrary compact, simply connected and simple Lie groups G.
