Restrictions for $n$-Point Vertices in Higher-Spin Theories

We give a simple classification of the independent $n$-point interaction vertices for bosonic higher-spin gauge fields in $d$-dimensional Minkowski space-times. We first give a characterisation of such vertices for large dimensions, $d \geq 2n - 1$, where one does not have to consider Schouten identities due to over-antisymmetrisation of space-time indices. When the dimension is lowered, such identities have to be considered, but their appearance only leads to equivalences of large-$d$ vertices and does not lead to new types of vertices. We consider the case of low dimensions, $d<n$, in detail, where the large number of Schouten identities leads to strong restrictions on independent vertices. We also comment on the generalisation of our results to the intermediate case $n \leq d \leq 2n - 2$. In all cases, the independent vertices are expressed in terms of elementary manifestly gauge-invariant quantities, suggesting that no deformations of the gauge transformations are induced.

Matrix factorisations for rational boundary conditions by defect fusion

A large class of two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ superconformal field theories can be understood as IR fixed-points of Landau-Ginzburg models. In particular, there are rational conformal field theories that also have a Landau-Ginzburg description. To understand better the relation between the structures in the rational conformal field theory and in the Landau-Ginzburg theory, we investigate how rational B-type boundary conditions are realised as matrix factorisations in the $SU(3)/U(2)$ Grassmannian Kazama-Suzuki model. As a tool to generate the matrix factorisations we make use of a particular interface between the Kazama-Suzuki model and products of minimal models, whose fusion can be realised as a simple functor on ring modules. This allows us to formulate a proposal for all matrix factorisations corresponding to rational boundary conditions in the $SU(3)/U(2)$ model.

Metric- and frame-like higher-spin gauge theories in three dimensions

We study the relation between the frame-like and metric-like formulation of higher-spin gauge theories in three space-time dimensions. We concentrate on the theory that is described by an SL(3) x SL(3) Chern-Simons theory in the frame-like formulation. The metric-like theory is obtained by eliminating the generalised spin connection by its equation of motion, and by expressing everything in terms of the metric and a spin-3 Fronsdal field. We give an exact map between fields and gauge parameters in both formulations. To work out the gauge transformations explicitly in terms of metric-like variables, we have to make a perturbative expansion in the spin-3 field. We describe an algorithm how to do this systematically, and we work out the gauge transformations to cubic order in the spin-3 field. We use these results to determine the gauge algebra to this order, and explain why the commutator of two spin-3 transformations only closes on-shell.

The large level limit of Kazama-Suzuki models

Limits of families of conformal field theories are of interest in the context of AdS/CFT dualities. We explore here the large level limit of the two-dimensional N=(2,2) superconformal W_{n+1} minimal models that appear in the context of the supersymmetric higher-spin AdS3/CFT2 duality. These models are constructed as Kazama-Suzuki coset models of the form SU(n+1)/U(n). We determine a family of boundary conditions in the limit theories, and use the modular bootstrap to obtain the full bulk spectrum of N=2 super-W_{n+1} primaries in the theory. We also confirm the identification of this limit theory as the continuous orbifold C^n/U(n) that was discussed recently.

The geometry of the limit of N=2 minimal models

We consider the limit of two-dimensional N=(2,2) superconformal minimal models when the central charge approaches c=3. Starting from a geometric description as non-linear sigma models, we show that one can obtain two different limit theories. One is the free theory of two bosons and two fermions, the other one is a continuous orbifold thereof. We substantiate this claim by detailed conformal field theory computations.

Towards metric-like higher-spin gauge theories in three dimensions

We consider the coupling of a symmetric spin-3 gauge field to three-dimensional gravity in a second order metric-like formulation. The action that corresponds to an SL(3,R) x SL(3,R) Chern-Simons theory in the frame-like formulation is identified to quadratic order in the spin-3 field. We apply our result to compute corrections to the area law for higher-spin black holes using Wald's entropy formula.

The limit of N=(2,2) superconformal minimal models

The limit of families of two-dimensional conformal field theories has recently attracted attention in the context of AdS/CFT dualities. In our work we analyse the limit of N=(2,2) superconformal minimal models when the central charge approaches c=3. The limiting theory is a non-rational N=(2,2) superconformal theory, in which there is a continuum of chiral primary fields. We determine the spectrum of the theory, the three-point functions on the sphere, and the disc one-point functions.

Variable transformation defects

We investigate defects between supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg models whose superpotentials are related by a variable transformation. It turns out that there is one natural defect, which can then be used to relate boundary conditions and defects in the different models. In particular this defect can be used to relate Grassmannian Kazama-Suzuki models and minimal models, and one can generate rational boundary conditions in the Kazama-Suzuki models from those in minimal models. The defects that appear here are closely related to the defects that are used in Khovanov-Rozansky link homology.

Asymptotic W-symmetries in three-dimensional higher-spin gauge theories

We discuss how to systematically compute the asymptotic symmetry algebras of generic three-dimensional bosonic higher-spin gauge theories in backgrounds that are asymptotically AdS. We apply these techniques to a one-parameter family of higher-spin gauge theories that can be considered as large N limits of SL(N) x SL(N) Chern-Simons theories, and we provide a closed formula for the structure constants of the resulting infinite-dimensional non-linear W-algebras. Along the way we provide a closed formula for the structure constants of all classical W_N algebras. In both examples the higher-spin generators of the W-algebras are Virasoro primaries. We eventually discuss how to relate our basis to a non-primary quadratic basis that was previously discussed in literature.

Asymptotic symmetries of three-dimensional gravity coupled to higher-spin fields

We discuss the emergence of W-algebras as asymptotic symmetries of higher-spin gauge theories coupled to three-dimensional Einstein gravity with a negative cosmological constant. We focus on models involving a finite number of bosonic higher-spin fields, and especially on the example provided by the coupling of a spin-3 field to gravity. It is described by a SL(3) \times SL(3) Chern-Simons theory and its asymptotic symmetry algebra is given by two copies of the classical W_3-algebra with central charge the one computed by Brown and Henneaux in pure gravity with negative cosmological constant.

D-branes and matrix factorisations in supersymmetric coset models

Matrix factorisations describe B-type boundary conditions in N=2 supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg models. At the infrared fixed point, they correspond to superconformal boundary states. We investigate the relation between boundary states and matrix factorisations in the Grassmannian Kazama-Suzuki coset models. For the first non-minimal series, i.e. for the models of type SU(3)_k/U(2), we identify matrix factorisations for a subset of the maximally symmetric boundary states. This set provides a basis for the RR charge lattice, and can be used to generate (presumably all) other boundary states by tachyon condensation.

Bulk flows in Virasoro minimal models with boundaries

The behaviour of boundary conditions under relevant bulk perturbations is studied for the Virasoro minimal models. In particular, we consider the bulk deformation by the least relevant bulk field which interpolates between the mth and (m-1)st unitary minimal model. In the presence of a boundary this bulk flow induces an RG flow on the boundary, which ensures that the resulting boundary condition is conformal in the (m-1)st model. By combining perturbative RG techniques with insights from defects and results about non-perturbative boundary flows, we determine the endpoint of the flow, i.e. the boundary condition to which an arbitrary boundary condition of the mth theory flows to.

DBI analysis of generalised permutation branes

We investigate D-branes on the product GxG of two group manifolds described as Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten models. When the levels of the two groups coincide, it is well known that there exist permutation D-branes which are twisted by the automorphism exchanging the two factors. When the levels are different, the D-brane charge group demands that there should be generalisations of these permutation D-branes, and a geometric construction for them was proposed in hep-th/0509153. We give further evidence for this proposal by showing that the generalised permutation D-branes satisfy the Dirac-Born-Infeld equations of motion for arbitrary compact, simply connected and simple Lie groups G.

The RR charges of A-type Gepner models

It is shown that the RR charges of Gepner models are not all accounted for by the usual tensor product and permutation branes. In order to characterise the missing D-branes we study the matrix factorisation approach to the description of D-branes for Gepner models. For each of the A-type models we identify a set of matrix factorisations whose charges generate the full lattice of quantised charges. The additional factorisations that are required correspond to generalised permutation branes.

Organizing boundary RG flows

We show how a large class of boundary RG flows in two-dimensional conformal field theories can be summarized in a single rule. This rule is a generalization of the 'absorption of the boundary spin'-principle of Affleck and Ludwig and applies to all theories which have a description as a coset model. We give a formulation for coset models with arbitrary modular invariant partition function and present evidence for the conjectured rule. The second half of the article contains an illustrated section of examples where the rule is applied to unitary minimal models of the A- and D-series, in particular the 3-state Potts model, and to parafermion theories. We demonstrate how the rule can be used to compute brane charge groups in the example of N=2 minimal models.

Non-commutative gauge theory of twisted D-branes

In this work we propose new non-commutative gauge theories that describe the dynamics of branes localized along twisted conjugacy classes on group manifolds. Our proposal is based on a careful analysis of the exact microscopic solution and it generalizes the matrix models (`fuzzy gauge theories') that are used to study e.g. the bound state formation of point-like branes in a curved background. We also construct a large number of classical solutions and interpret them in terms of condensation processes on branes localized along twisted conjugacy classes.

D-Branes in Coset Models

The analysis of D-branes in coset models G/H provides a natural extension of recent studies on branes in WZW-theory and it has various interesting applications to physically relevant models. In this work we develop a reduction procedure that allows to construct the non-commutative gauge theories which govern the dynamics of branes in G/H. We obtain a large class of solutions and interprete the associated condensation processes geometrically. The latter are used to propose conservation laws for the dynamics of branes in coset models at large level k. In super-symmetric theories, conserved charges are argued to take their values in the representation ring of the denominator theory. Finally, we apply the general results to study boundary fixed points in two examples, namely for parafermions and minimal models.

Branes on Group Manifolds, Gluon Condensates, and twisted K-theory

In this work we study the dynamics of branes on group manifolds G deep in the stringy regime. After giving a brief overview of the various branes that can be constructed within the boundary conformal field theory approach, we analyze in detail the condensation processes that occur on stacks of such branes. At large volume our discussion is based on certain effective gauge theories on non-commutative `fuzzy' spaces. Using the `absorption of the boundary spin'-principle which was formulated by Affleck and Ludwig in their work on the Kondo model, we extrapolate the brane dynamics into the stringy regime. For supersymmetric theories, the resulting condensation processes turn out to be consistent with the existence of certain conserved charges taking values in some non-trivial discrete abelian groups. We obtain strong constraints on these charge groups for G = SU(N). The results may be compared with a recent proposal of Bouwknegt and Mathai according to which charge groups on curved spaces X (with a non-vanishing NSNS 3-form field strength H) are given by the twisted K-groups K*_H(X).
