The SAGEX Review on Scattering Amplitudes, Chapter 10: Selected topics on modular covariance of type IIB string amplitudes and their $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills duals

This article reviews some results of the SAGEX programme that have developed in the understanding of the interplay of supersymmetry and modular covariance of scattering amplitudes in type IIB superstring theory and its holographic image in $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM). The first section includes the determination of exact expressions for BPS interactions in the low-energy expansion of type IIB superstring amplitudes. The second section concerns properties of a certain class of integrated correlators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM with arbitrary classical gauge group that are exactly determined by supersymmetric localisation. Not only do these reproduce known features of perturbative and non-perturbative $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM for any classical gauge group, but they have large-$N$ expansions that are in accord with expectations based on the holographic correspondence with superstring theory. The final section focusses on modular graph functions. These are modular functions that are closely associated with coefficients in the low-energy expansion of superstring perturbation theory and have recently received quite a lot of interest in both the physics and mathematics literature.

Integrated correlators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills and periods

We study perturbative aspects of recently proposed integrated four-point correlators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills with all classical gauge groups using standard Feynman diagram computations. We argue that perturbative contributions of the integrated correlators are given by linear combinations of periods of certain conformal Feynman graphs, which were originally introduced for the construction of perturbative loop integrands of the un-integrated correlator. This observation allows us to evaluate the integrated correlators to high loop orders. We explicitly compute one of the integrated correlators up to four loops in the planar limit, and up to three loops for the other integrated correlator, and find agreement with the results obtained from supersymmetric localisation. The identification between the integrated correlators and certain periods also implies non-trivial relations among these periods, given that one may compute the integrated correlators using localisation. We illustrate this idea by considering one of the integrated correlators at five loops in the planar limit, where the localisation result leads to a prediction for the period of a certain six-loop integral.

Kinematic Hopf Algebra for BCJ Numerators in Heavy-Mass Effective Field Theory and Yang-Mills Theory

We present a closed formula for all Bern-Carrasco-Johansson (BCJ) numerators describing $D$-dimensional tree-level scattering amplitudes in a heavy-mass effective field theory with two massive particles and an arbitrary number of gluons. The corresponding gravitational amplitudes obtained via the double copy directly enter the computation of black-hole scattering and gravitational-wave emission. Our construction is based on finding a kinematic algebra for the numerators, which we relate to a quasi-shuffle Hopf algebra. The BCJ numerators thus obtained have a compact form and intriguing features: gauge invariance is manifest, locality is respected for massless exchange, and they contain poles corresponding to massive exchange. Counting the number of terms in a BCJ numerator for $n{-}2$ gluons gives the Fubini numbers $\mathsf{F}_{n-3}$, reflecting the underlying quasi-shuffle Hopf algebra structure. Finally, by considering an appropriate factorisation limit, the massive particles decouple, and we thus obtain a kinematic algebra and all tree-level BCJ numerators for $D$-dimensional pure Yang-Mills theory.

The orthogonal momentum amplituhedron and ABJM amplitudes

In this paper, we introduce the momentum space amplituhedron for tree-level scattering amplitudes of ABJM theory. We demonstrate that the scattering amplitude can be identified as the canonical form on the space given by the product of positive orthogonal Grassmannian and the moment curve. The co-dimension one boundaries of this space are simply the odd-particle planar Mandelstam variables, while the even-particle counterparts are "hidden" as higher co-dimension boundaries. Remarkably, this space can be equally defined through a series of "sign flip" requirements of the projected external data, identical to "half" of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory (sYM). Thus in a precise sense the geometry for ABJM lives on the boundary of $\mathcal{N}=4$ sYM. We verify this relation through eight-points by showing that the BCFW triangulation of the amplitude tiles the amplituhedron. The canonical form is naturally derived using the Grassmannian formula for the amplitude in the $\mathcal{N}=4$ formalism for ABJM theory.

Maximal $U(1)_Y$-violating $n$-point correlators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory

This paper concerns a special class of $n$-point correlation functions of operators in the stress tensor supermultiplet of $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory. These are "maximal $U(1)_Y$-violating" correlators that violate the bonus $U(1)_Y$ charge by a maximum of $2(n-4)$ units. We will demonstrate that such correlators satisfy $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$-covariant recursion relations that relate $n$-point correlators to $(n-1)$-point correlators in a manner analogous to the soft dilaton relations that relate the corresponding amplitudes in flat-space type IIB superstring theory. These recursion relations are used to determine terms in the large-$N$ expansion of $n$-point maximal $U(1)_Y$-violating correlators in the chiral sector, including correlators with four superconformal stress tensor primaries and $(n-4)$ chiral Lagrangian operators, starting from known properties of the $n=4$ case. We concentrate on the first three orders in $1/N$ beyond the supergravity limit. The Mellin representations of the correlators are polynomials in Mellin variables, which correspond to higher derivative contact terms in the low-energy expansion of type IIB superstring theory in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ at the same orders as $R^4, d^4R^4$ and $d^6R^4$. The coupling constant dependence of these terms is found to be described by non-holomorphic modular forms with holomorphic and anti-holomorphic weights $(n-4,4-n)$ that are $SL(2, \mathbb{Z})$-covariant derivatives of Eisenstein series and certain generalisations. This determines a number of non-leading contributions to $U(1)_Y$-violating $n$-particle interactions ($n>4$) in the low-energy expansion of type IIB superstring amplitudes in $AdS_5\times S^5$.

D3-Brane Loop Amplitudes from M5-Brane Tree Amplitudes

We study loop corrections to scattering amplitudes in the world-volume theory of a probe D3-brane, which is described by the supersymmetric Dirac-Born-Infeld theory. We show that the D3-brane loop superamplitudes can be obtained from the tree-level superamplitudes in the world-volume theory of a probe M5-brane (or D5-brane). The M5-brane theory describes self-interactions of an abelian tensor supermultiplet with $(2,0)$ supersymmetry, and the tree-level superamplitudes are given by a twistor formula. We apply the construction to the maximally-helicity-violating (MHV) amplitudes in the D3-brane theory at one-loop order, which are purely rational terms (except for the four-point amplitude). The results are further confirmed by generalised unitarity methods. Through a supersymmetry reduction on the M5-brane tree-level superamplitudes, we also construct one-loop corrections to the non-supersymmetric D3-brane amplitudes, which agree with the known results in the literature.

The CFT$_6$ origin of all tree-level 4-point correlators in AdS$_3 \times S^3$

We provide strong evidence that all tree-level 4-point holographic correlators in AdS$_3 \times S^3$ are constrained by a hidden 6D conformal symmetry. This property has been discovered in the AdS$_5 \times S^5$ context and noticed in the tensor multiplet subsector of the AdS$_3 \times S^3$ theory. Here we extend it to general AdS$_3 \times S^3$ correlators which contain also the chiral primary operators of spin zero and one that sit in the gravity multiplet. The key observation is that the 6D conformal primary field associated with these operators is not a scalar but a self-dual $3$-form primary. As an example, we focus on the correlators involving two fields in the tensor multiplets and two in the gravity multiplet and show that all such correlators are encoded in a conformal 6D correlator between two scalars and two self-dual $3$-forms, which is determined by three functions of the cross ratios. We fix these three functions by comparing with the results of the simplest correlators derived from an explicit supergravity calculation.

Exploring soft constraints on effective actions

We study effective actions for simultaneous breaking of space-time and internal symmetries. Novel features arise due to the mixing of Goldstone modes under the broken symmetries which, in contrast to the usual Adler's zero, leads to non-vanishing soft limits. Such scenarios are common for spontaneously broken SCFT's. We explicitly test these soft theorems for $\mathcal{N}=4$ sYM in the Coulomb branch both perturbatively and non-perturbatively. We explore the soft constraints systematically utilizing recursion relations. In the pure dilaton sector of a general CFT, we show that all amplitudes up to order $s^{n} \sim \partial^{2n}$ are completely determined in terms of the $k$-point amplitudes at order $s^k$ with $k \leq n$. Terms with at most one derivative acting on each dilaton insertion are completely fixed and coincide with those appearing in the conformal DBI, i.e. DBI in AdS. With maximal supersymmetry, the effective actions are further constrained, leading to new non-renormalization theorems. In particular, the effective action is fixed up to eight derivatives in terms of just one unknown four-point coefficient and one more coefficient for ten-derivative terms. Finally, we also study the interplay between scale and conformal invariance in this context.

Instanton corrections to the effective action of N=4 SYM

We compute the one-instanton effective action of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory with gauge group Sp(2N). The result can be written in a very compact and manifestly supersymmetric form involving an integral over the superspace of an irrational function of the N=4 on-shell superfields. In the Coulomb branch, the instanton corrects both the MHV and next-to-next-MHV higher derivative terms D^4F^{2n+2} and F^{2n+4}. We confirm at the non-perturbative level the non-renormalization theorems for MHV F^{2n+2} terms that are expected to receive perturbative corrections only at n-loops. We compute also the one and two-loop corrections to the D^4F^4 term and show that its completion under SL(2,Z) duality is consistent with the one-instanton results of U(2) gauge group.

Non-Planar On-Shell Diagrams

We initiate a systematic study of non-planar on-shell diagrams in N=4 SYM and develop powerful technology for doing so. We introduce canonical variables generalizing face variables, which make the dlog form of the on-shell form explicit. We make significant progress towards a general classification of arbitrary on-shell diagrams by means of two classes of combinatorial objects: generalized matching and matroid polytopes. We propose a boundary measurement that connects general on-shell diagrams to the Grassmannian. Our proposal exhibits two important and non-trivial properties: positivity in the planar case and it matches the combinatorial description of the diagrams in terms of generalized matroid polytopes. Interestingly, non-planar diagrams exhibit novel phenomena, such as the emergence of constraints on Plucker coordinates beyond Plucker relations when deleting edges, which are neatly captured by the generalized matching and matroid polytopes. This behavior is tied to the existence of a new type of poles in the on-shell form at which combinations of Plucker coordinates vanish. Finally, we introduce a prescription, applicable beyond the MHV case, for writing the on-shell form as a function of minors directly from the graph.

Recursion relations from soft theorems

We establish a set of new on-shell recursion relations for amplitudes satisfying soft theorems. The recursion relations can apply to those amplitudes whose additional physical inputs from soft theorems are enough to overcome the bad large-z behaviour. This work is a generalization of the recursion relations recently obtained by Cheung et al for amplitudes in scalar effective field theories with enhanced vanishing soft behaviours, which can be regarded as a special case of those with non-vanishing soft limits. We apply the recursion relations to tree-level amplitudes in various theories, including amplitudes in the Akulov-Volkov theory, amplitudes containing dilatons of spontaneously-broken conformal symmetry.

Soft theorems from anomalous symmetries

We discuss constraints imposed by soft limits for effective field theories arising from symmetry breaking. In particular, we consider those associated with anomalous conformal symmetry as well as duality symmetries in supergravity. We verify these soft theorems for the dilaton effective action relevant for the a-theorem, as well as the one-loop effective action for N=4 supergravity. Using the universality of leading transcendental coefficients in the alpha' expansion of string theory amplitudes, we study the matrix elements of operator R^4 with half maximal supersymmetry. We construct the non-linear completion of R^4 that satisfies both single and double soft theorems up to seven points. This supports the existence of duality invariant completion of R^4.

Stratifying On-Shell Cluster Varieties: the Geometry of Non-Planar On-Shell Diagrams

The correspondence between on-shell diagrams in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and cluster varieties in the Grassmannian remains largely unexplored beyond the planar limit. In this article, we describe a systematic program to survey such 'on-shell varieties', and use this to provide a complete classification in the case of $G(3,6)$. In particular, we find exactly 24 top-dimensional varieties and 10 co-dimension one varieties in $G(3,6)$---up to parity and relabeling of the external legs. We use this case to illustrate some of the novelties found for non-planar varieties relative to the case of positroids, and describe some of the features that we expect to hold more generally.

The free $σ$CFTs

We introduce the conformal field theories that describe the shadows of the lowest dimension composites made out of massless free scalars and fermions in $d$ dimensions. We argue that these theories can be consistently defined as free CFTs for even $d\geq 4$. We use OPE techniques to study their spectrum and show that for $d\rightarrow\infty$ it matches that of free bosonic CFTs in $d=6$ and $d=4$ dimensions. For these $σ$CFTs we calculate $c_T$ in $d=6,8,10$ and $12$ dimensions using the OPE and also a direct construction of their higher-derivative energy momentum tensors. Our results agree with the general proposal of arXiv:1601.07198.

Universality in string interactions

In this letter, we provide evidence for universality in the low-energy expansion of tree-level string interactions. More precisely, in the alpha'-expansion of tree-level scattering amplitudes, we conjecture that the leading transcendental coefficient at each order in alpha' is universal for all perturbative string theories. We have checked this universality up to seven points and trace its origin to the ability to restructure the disk integrals of open bosonic string into those of the superstring. The accompanying kinematic functions have the same low-energy limit and do not introduce any transcendental numbers in their alpha'-corrections. Universality in the closed-string sector then follows from the KLT-relations.

Double Soft Theorems in Gauge and String Theories

We investigate the tree-level S-matrix in gauge theories and open superstring theory with several soft particles. We show that scattering amplitudes with two or three soft gluons of non-identical helicities behave universally in the limit, with multi-soft factors which are not the product of individual soft gluon factors. The results are obtained from the BCFW recursion relations in four dimensions, and further extended to arbitrary dimensions using the CHY formula. We also find new soft theorems for double soft limits of scalars and fermions in N=4 and pure N=2 SYM. Finally, we show that the double-soft-scalar theorems can be extended to open superstring theory without receiving any alpha' corrections.

Exact coefficients for higher dimensional operators with sixteen supersymmetries

We consider constraints on higher dimensional operators for supersymmetric effective field theories. In four dimensions with maximal supersymmetry and SU(4) R-symmetry, we demonstrate that the coefficients of abelian operators F^n with MHV helicity configurations must satisfy a recursion relation, and are completely determined by that of F^4. As the F^4 coefficient is known to be one-loop exact, this allows us to derive exact coefficients for all such operators. We also argue that the results are consistent with the SL(2,Z) duality symmetry. Breaking SU(4) to Sp(4), in anticipation for the Coulomb branch effective action, we again find an infinite class of operators whose coefficient that are determined exactly. We also consider three-dimensional N=8 as well as six-dimensional N=(2,0),(1,0) and (1,1) theories. In all cases, we demonstrate that the coefficient of dimension-six operator must be proportional to the square of that of dimension-four.

From U(1) to E8: soft theorems in supergravity amplitudes

It is known that for N=8 supergravity, the double-soft-scalar limit of a n-point amplitude is given by a sum of local SU(8) rotations acting on a (n-2)-point amplitude. For N<8 supergravity theories, complication arises due to the presence of a U(1) in the U(N) isotropy group, which introduces a soft-graviton singularity that obscures the action of the duality symmetry. In this paper, we introduce an anti-symmetrised extraction procedure that exposes the full duality group. We illustrate this procedure for tree-level amplitudes in 4<=N<8 supergravity in four dimensions, as well as N=16 supergravity in three dimensions. In three dimensions, as all bosonic degrees of freedom transform under the E8 duality group, supersymmetry ensures that the amplitude vanishes in the single-soft limit of all particle species, in contrast to its higher dimensional siblings. Using recursive formulas and generalized unitarity cuts in three dimensions, we demonstrate the action of the duality group for any tree-level and one-loop amplitudes. Finally we discuss the implications of the duality symmetry on possible counter terms for this theory. As a preliminary application, we show that the vanishing of single-soft limits of arbitrary component fields in three-dimensional supergravity rules out the direct dimensional reduction of D^8R^4 as a valid counter term.

New fermionic soft theorems

Soft limits of massless S-matrix are known to reflect symmetries of the theory. In particular for theories with Goldstone bosons, the double-soft limit of scalars reveals the coset structure of the vacuum manifold. In this letter, we propose that such universal double-soft behavior is not only true for scalars, but also for spin-1/2 particles in four dimensions and fermions in three dimensions. We first consider Akulov-Volkov theory, and demonstrate the double soft-limit of goldstinos yields the supersymmetry algebra. More surprisingly we also find amplitudes in 3<N<=8 supergravity theories in four dimensions as well as N=16 supergravity in three dimensions behave universally in the double-soft-fermion limit, analogue to the scalar ones. The validity of the new soft theorems at loop level is also studied. The results for supergravity are beyond what is implied by SUSY Ward identities, and may impose non-trivial constraints on the possible counter terms for supergravity theories.

ABJM amplitudes and the positive orthogonal grassmannian

A remarkable connection between perturbative scattering amplitudes of four-dimensional planar SYM, and the stratification of the positive grassmannian, was revealed in the seminal work of Arkani-Hamed et. al. Similar extension for three-dimensional ABJM theory was proposed. Here we establish a direct connection between planar scattering amplitudes of ABJM theory, and singularities there of, to the stratification of the positive orthogonal grassmannian. In particular, scattering processes are constructed through on-shell diagrams, which are simply iterative gluing of the fundamental four-point amplitude. Each diagram is then equivalent to the merging of fundamental OG_2 orthogonal grassmannian to form a larger OG_k, where 2k is the number of external particles. The invariant information that is encoded in each diagram is precisely this stratification. This information can be easily read off via permutation paths of the on-shell diagram, which also can be used to derive a canonical representation of OG_k that manifests the vanishing of consecutive minors as the singularity of all on-shell diagrams. Quite remarkably, for the BCFW recursion representation of the tree-level amplitudes, the on-shell diagram manifests the presence of all physical factorization poles, as well as the cancellation of the spurious poles. After analytically continuing the orthogonal grassmannian to split signature, we reveal that each on-shell diagram in fact resides in the positive cell of the orthogonal grassmannian, where all minors are positive. In this language, the amplitudes of ABJM theory is simply an integral of a product of dlog forms, over the positive orthogonal grassmannian.

Loop Corrections to Soft Theorems in Gauge Theories and Gravity

In this paper, we study loop corrections to the recently proposed new soft theorem of Cachazo-Strominger, for both gravity and gauge theory amplitudes. We first review the proof of its tree-level validity based on BCFW recursion relations, which also establishes an infinite series of universals soft functions for MHV amplitudes, and a generalization to supersymmetric cases. For loop corrections, we focus on infrared finite, rational amplitudes at one loop, and apply recursion relations with boundary or double-pole contributions. For all-plus amplitudes, we prove that the subleading soft-theorems are exact to all multiplicities for both gauge and gravity amplitudes. For single-minus amplitudes, while the subleading soft-theorems are again exact for the minus-helicity soft leg, for plus-helicity loop corrections are required. Using recursion relations, we identify the source of such mismatch as stemming from the special contribution containing double poles, and obtain the all-multiplicity one-loop corrections to the subleading soft behavior in Yang-Mills theory. We also comment on the derivation of soft theorems using BCFW recursion in arbitrary dimensions.

More on Soft Theorems: Trees, Loops and Strings

We study soft theorems in a broader context, addressing their fate at loop level and their universality in effective field theories and string theory. We argue that for gauge theories in the planar limit, loop-level soft gluon theorems can be made manifest already at the integrand level. In particular, we show that the planar integrand for N=4 SYM satisfies the tree-level soft theorem to all orders in perturbation theory and provide strong evidence to this effect for integrands in N<4 SYM. We consider soft theorems for non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories and gravity, and show the validity of integrand soft theorem, while loop corrections to the integrated soft theorems are intimately tied to the presence of conformal anomalies. We then address the question of universality of the soft theorems for various theories. In effective field theories with F^3 and R^3 interactions, the soft theorems are not modified. However for gravity theories with R^2 phi interactions, the sub-sub-leading order soft graviton theorem, which is beyond what is implied by the extended BMS symmetry, requires modifications at tree level for non-supersymmetric theories, and at loop level for N<5 supergravity due to anomalies. Finally, for superstring amplitudes at finite alpha', via explicit calculation for lower-point examples as well as world-sheet OPE analysis for arbitrary multiplicity, we show that the superstring amplitudes satisfy the same soft theorem as its field-theory counterpart. This is no longer true for bosonic closed strings due to the presence of R^2 phi interactions.

On super form factors of half-BPS operators in N=4 super Yang-Mills

We compute form factors of half-BPS operators in N=4 super Yang-Mills dual to massive Kaluza-Klein modes in supergravity. These are appropriate supersymmetrisations T_k of the scalar operators Tr(ϕ^k) for any k, which for k=2 give the chiral part of the stress-tensor multiplet operator. Using harmonic superspace, we derive simple Ward identities for these form factors, which we then compute perturbatively at tree level and one loop. We propose a novel on-shell recursion relation which links form factors with different numbers of fields. Using this, we conjecture a general formula for the n-point MHV form factors of T_k for arbitrary k and n. Finally, we use supersymmetric generalised unitarity to derive compact expressions for all one-loop MHV form factors of T_k in terms of one-loop triangles and finite two-mass easy box functions.

Simplifying instanton corrections to N=4 SYM correlators

We compute instanton corrections to non-minimal correlation functions of chiral primary operators in the N=4 super Yang-Mills super-current multiplet. Using a representation in terms of Mellin integrals, we find that these corrections can be written as conformal integrals in AdS_5 times certain "kinematic" prefactors that are independent of the instanton moduli. We then consider the consecutive, pairwise light-like limit x_{i, i+1}^2 -> 0 of such correlators, and prove that the ratio between the instanton contribution and the corresponding tree-level expression vanishes in this limit. We also speculate on the extension to the non-perturbative level of the proposed duality with polygonal Wilson loops and briefly discuss its potential implications for scattering amplitudes.

The last of the simple remainders

We compute the n-point two-loop form factors of the half-BPS operators Tr(phi_{AB}^n) in N=4 super Yang-Mills for arbitrary n >2 using generalised unitarity and symbols. These form factors are minimal in the sense that the n^{th} power of the scalar field in the operator requires the presence of at least n on-shell legs. Infrared divergences are shown to exponentiate as for amplitudes, reproducing the known cusp and collinear anomalous dimensions at two loops. We define appropriate infrared-finite remainder functions and compute them analytically for all n. The results obtained by using the known expressions of the integral functions involve complicated combinations of Goncharov multiple polylogarithms, but we show that much simpler expressions can in fact be derived using the symbol of transcendental functions. For n=3 we find a very compact remainder function expressed in terms of classical polylogarithms only. For arbitrary n>3 we are able to write all the remainder functions in terms of a single compact building block, expressed as a sum of classical polylogarithms augmented by two multiple polylogarithms. The decomposition of the symbol into specific components is crucial in order to single out a natural combination of multiple polylogarithms. Finally, we analyse in detail the behaviour of these minimal form factors in collinear and soft limits, which deviates from the usual behaviour of amplitudes and non-minimal form factors.

The Positive orthogonal Grassmannian and loop amplitudes of ABJM

In this paper we study the combinatorics associated with the positive orthogonal Grassmannian OG_k and its connection to ABJM scattering amplitudes. We present a canonical embedding of OG_k into the Grassmannian Gr(k,2k), from which we deduce the canonical volume form that is invariant under equivalence moves. Remarkably the canonical forms of all reducible graphs can be converted into irreducible ones with products of dLog forms. Unlike N=4 super Yang-Mills, here the Jacobian plays a crucial role to ensure the dLog form of the reduced representation. Furthermore, we identify the functional map that arises from the triangle equivalence move as a 3-string scattering S-matrix which satisfies the tetrahedron equations by Zamolodchikov, implying (2+1)-dimensional integrability. We study the solution to the BCFW recursion relation for loop amplitudes, and demonstrate the presence of all physical singularities as well as the absence of all spurious ones. The on-shell diagram solution to the loop recursion relation exhibits manifest two-site cyclic symmetry and reveals that, to all loop, four and six-point amplitudes only have logarithmic singularities.

Thresholds of Large N Factorization in CFT4 : Exploring bulk spacetime in AdS5

Large $N$ factorization ensures that, for low-dimension gauge-invariant operators in the half-BPS sector of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM, products of holomorphic traces have vanishing correlators with single anti-holomorphic traces. This vanishing is necessary to consistently map trace operators in the CFT$_4$ to a Fock space of graviton oscillations in the dual AdS$_5$. We investigate the regimes at which the CFT correlators do not vanish but become of order one in the large $N$ limit, which we call a factorization threshold. Quite generally, we find the threshold to be when the product of the two holomorphic operator dimensions is of order $N\log N$. Our analysis considers extremal and non-extremal correlators and correlators in states dual to LLM backgrounds, and we observe intriguing similarities between the the energy-dependent running coupling of non-abelian gauge theories and our threshold equations. Finally, we discuss some interpretations of the threshold within the bulk AdS spacetime.

On the refined counting of graphs on surfaces

Ribbon graphs embedded on a Riemann surface provide a useful way to describe the double line Feynman diagrams of large N computations and a variety of other QFT correlator and scattering amplitude calculations, e.g in MHV rules for scattering amplitudes, as well as in ordinary QED. Their counting is a special case of the counting of bi-partite embedded graphs. We review and extend relevant mathematical literature and present results on the counting of some infinite classes of bi-partite graphs. Permutation groups and representations as well as double cosets and quotients of graphs are useful mathematical tools. The counting results are refined according to data of physical relevance, such as the structure of the vertices, faces and genus of the embedded graph. These counting problems can be expressed in terms of observables in three-dimensional topological field theory with S_d gauge group which gives them a topological membrane interpretation.

All one-loop amplitudes in N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory

We exploit a recently found connection between special triple-cut diagrams and tree-level recursive diagrams to derive a general formula capturing the multi-particle factorisation of arbitrary one-loop amplitudes in the ABJM theory. This formula contains certain anomalous contributions which are reminiscent of the so-called non-factorising contributions appearing in the factorisation of one-loop amplitudes in four-dimensional gauge theory. In the second part of the paper we derive a recursion relation for the supercoefficients of one-loop amplitudes in ABJM theory. By applying this recursion relation, any one-loop supercoefficient can be reduced to special triple-cut diagrams involving at least one four-point tree amplitude. In turn, this implies that any one-loop supercoefficient can be derived from tree-level recursive diagrams.

Generating All Tree Amplitudes in N=4 SYM by Inverse Soft Limit

The idea of adding particles to construct amplitudes has been utilized in various ways in exploring the structure of scattering amplitudes. This idea is often called Inverse Soft Limit, namely it is the reverse mechanism of taking particles to be soft. We apply the Inverse Soft Limit to the tree-level amplitudes in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory, which allows us to generate full tree-level superamplitudes by adding "soft" particles in a certain way. With the help from Britto-Cachazo-Feng-Witten recursion relations, a systematic and concrete way of adding particles is determined recursively. The amplitudes constructed solely by adding particles not only have manifest Yangian symmetry, but also make the soft limit transparent. The method of generating amplitudes by Inverse Soft Limit can also be generalized for constructing form factors.

On Feynman rules for Mellin amplitudes in AdS/CFT

The computation of CFT correlation functions via Witten diagrams in AdS space can be simplified via the Mellin transform. Recently a set of Feynman rules for tree-level Mellin space amplitudes has been proposed for scalar theories. In this note we derive these rules by explicitly evaluating all of the relevant Witten diagram integrals for the scalar phi^n theory. We also check that the rules reduce to the usual Feynman rules in the flat space limit.

The Grassmannian and the Twistor String: Connecting All Trees in N=4 SYM

We present a new, explicit formula for all tree-level amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills. The formula is written as a certain contour integral of the connected prescription of Witten's twistor string, expressed in link variables. A very simple deformation of the integrand gives directly the Grassmannian integrand proposed by Arkani-Hamed et al. together with the explicit contour of integration. The integral is derived by iteratively adding particles to the Grassmannian integral, one particle at a time, and makes manifest both parity and soft limits. The formula is shown to be related to those given by Dolan and Goddard, and generalizes the results of earlier work for NMHV and N^2MHV to all N^(k-2)MHV tree amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills.

A Grassmannian Etude in NMHV Minors

Arkani-Hamed, Cachazo, Cheung and Kaplan have proposed a Grassmannian formulation for the S-matrix of N=4 Yang-Mills as an integral over link variables. In parallel work, the connected prescription for computing tree amplitudes in Witten's twistor string theory has also been written in terms of link variables. In this paper we extend the six- and seven-point results of arXiv:0909.0229 and arXiv:0909.0499 by providing a simple analytic proof of the equivalence between the two formulas for all tree-level NMHV superamplitudes. Also we note that a simple deformation of the connected prescription integrand gives directly the ACCK Grassmannian integrand in the limit when the deformation parameters equal zero.

The Tree Formula for MHV Graviton Amplitudes

We present and prove a formula for the MHV scattering amplitude of n gravitons at tree level. Some of the more interesting features of the formula, which set it apart as being significantly different from many more familiar formulas, include the absence of any vestigial reference to a cyclic ordering of the gravitons--making it in a sense a truly gravitational formula, rather than a recycled Yang-Mills result, and the fact that it simultaneously manifests both S_{n-2} symmetry as well as large-z behavior that is O(1/z^2) term-by-term, without relying on delicate cancellations. The formula is seemingly related to others by an enormous simplification provided by O(n^n) iterated Schouten identities, but our proof relies on a complex analysis argument rather than such a brute force manipulation. We find that the formula has a very simple link representation in twistor space, where cancellations that are non-obvious in physical space become manifest.

Systematics of One-Loop Scattering Amplitudes in N=4 Super Yang-Mills Theories

One-loop scattering amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills (SYM) theories are analyzed in the paradigm of maximal helicity violating Feynman diagrams. There are very limited number of loop integrals to be evaluated. For a process with n external particles, there are only [n/2]-1 generically independent integrals. Furthermore, the relations between leading N_c amplitudes A_{n;1} and sub-leading amplitudes A_{n;c} are found to be identical to those obtained from conventional field theory calculations, which can be interpreted as an indirect support for the paradigm.
