The SAGEX Review on Scattering Amplitudes, Chapter 1: Modern Fundamentals of Amplitudes

This chapter introduces the foundational elements of scattering amplitudes. It is meant to be accessible to readers with only a basic understanding of quantum field theory. Topics covered include: the four-dimensional spinor-helicity formalism and the colour decomposition of Yang-Mills scattering amplitudes; the study of soft and collinear limits of Yang-Mills and gravity amplitudes; the BCFW recursion relation and generalised unitarity, also in the superamplitudes formalism of $\mathcal{N}{=}4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills; an overview of standard and hidden symmetries of the $S$-matrix of $\mathcal{N}{=}4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills, such as the conformal, dual conformal and Yangian symmetries; and a brief excursus on form factors of protected and non-protected operators in Yang-Mills theory. Several examples and explicit calculations are also provided.

Kinematic Hopf Algebra for BCJ Numerators in Heavy-Mass Effective Field Theory and Yang-Mills Theory

We present a closed formula for all Bern-Carrasco-Johansson (BCJ) numerators describing $D$-dimensional tree-level scattering amplitudes in a heavy-mass effective field theory with two massive particles and an arbitrary number of gluons. The corresponding gravitational amplitudes obtained via the double copy directly enter the computation of black-hole scattering and gravitational-wave emission. Our construction is based on finding a kinematic algebra for the numerators, which we relate to a quasi-shuffle Hopf algebra. The BCJ numerators thus obtained have a compact form and intriguing features: gauge invariance is manifest, locality is respected for massless exchange, and they contain poles corresponding to massive exchange. Counting the number of terms in a BCJ numerator for $n{-}2$ gluons gives the Fubini numbers $\mathsf{F}_{n-3}$, reflecting the underlying quasi-shuffle Hopf algebra structure. Finally, by considering an appropriate factorisation limit, the massive particles decouple, and we thus obtain a kinematic algebra and all tree-level BCJ numerators for $D$-dimensional pure Yang-Mills theory.

Eikonal phase matrix, deflection angle and time delay in effective field theories of gravity

The eikonal approximation is an ideal tool to extract classical observables in gauge theory and gravity directly from scattering amplitudes. Here we consider effective theories of gravity where in addition to the Einstein-Hilbert term we include non-minimal couplings of the type $R^3$, $R^4$ and $FFR$. In particular, we study the scattering of gravitons and photons of frequency $ω$ off heavy scalars of mass $m$ in the limit $m\gg ω\gg |\vec{q}\,|$, where $\vec{q}$ is the momentum transfer. The presence of non-minimal couplings induces helicity-flip processes which survive the eikonal limit, thereby promoting the eikonal phase to an eikonal phase matrix. We obtain the latter from the relevant two-to-two helicity amplitudes that we compute up to one-loop order, and confirm that the leading-order terms in $ω$ exponentiate à la Amati, Ciafaloni and Veneziano. From the eigenvalues of the eikonal phase matrix we then extract two physical observables, to 2PM order: the classical deflection angle and Shapiro time delay/advance. Whenever the classical expectation of helicity conservation of the massless scattered particle is violated, i.e. the eigenvalues of the eikonal matrix are non-degenerate, causality violation due to time advance is a generic possibility for small impact parameter. We show that for graviton scattering in the $R^4$ and $FFR$ theories, time advance is circumvented if the couplings of these interactions satisfy certain positivity conditions, while it is unavoidable for graviton scattering in the $R^3$ theory and photon scattering in the $FFR$ theory. The scattering processes we consider mimic the deflection of photons and gravitons off spinless heavy objects such as black~holes.

From amplitudes to gravitational radiation with cubic interactions and tidal effects

We study the effect of cubic and tidal interactions on the spectrum of gravitational waves emitted in the inspiral phase of the merger of two non-spinning objects. There are two independent parity-even cubic interaction terms, which we take to be $I_1 = {R^{αβ}}_{μν} {R^{μν}}_{ρσ} {R^{ρσ}}_{αβ}$ and $G_3 = I_1-2 R^α\,_μ\,^β\,_ν R^μ\,_ρ\,^ν\,_σ R^ρ\,_α\,^σ\,_β$. The latter has vanishing pure graviton amplitudes but modifies mixed scalar/graviton amplitudes which are crucial for our study. Working in an effective field theory set-up, we compute the modifications to the quadrupole moment due to $I_1$, $G_3$ and tidal interactions, from which we obtain the power of gravitational waves radiated in the process to first order in the perturbations and leading order in the post-Minkowskian expansion. The $I_1$ predictions are novel, and we find that our results for $G_3$ are related to the known quadrupole corrections arising from tidal perturbations, although the physical origin of the $G_3$ coupling is unrelated to the finite-size effects underlying tidal interactions. We show this by recomputing such tidal corrections and by presenting an explicit field redefinition. In the post-Newtonian expansion our results are complete at leading order, which for the gravitational-wave flux is 5PN for $G_3$ and tidal interactions, and 6PN for $I_1$. Finally, we compute the corresponding modifications to the waveforms.

On higher-derivative effects on the gravitational potential and particle bending

Using modern amplitude techniques we compute the leading classical and quantum corrections to the classical gravitational potential between two massive scalars induced by adding an $R^3$ term to Einstein gravity. We then study the scattering of massless scalars, photons and gravitons off a heavy scalar in the presence of the same $R^3$ deformation, and determine the bending angle in the three cases from the non-analytic component of the scattering amplitude. Similarly to the Einstein-Hilbert case, we find that the classical contribution to the bending angle is universal, but unlike that case, universality is preserved also by the first quantum correction. Finally we extend our analysis to include a deformation of the form $ΦR^2$, where $Φ$ is the dilaton, which arises in the low-energy effective action of the bosonic string in addition to the $R^3$ term, and compute its effect on the graviton bending.

A note on the absence of $R^2$ corrections to Newton's potential

We consider Einstein gravity with the addition of $R^2$ and $R^{μν} R_{μν}$ interactions in the context of effective field theory, and the corresponding scattering amplitudes of gravitons and minimally-coupled heavy scalars. First, we recover the known fact that graviton amplitudes are the same as in Einstein gravity. Then we show that all amplitudes with two heavy scalars and an arbitrary number of gravitons are also not affected by these interactions. We prove this by direct computations, using field redefinitions known from earlier applications in string theory, and with a combination of factorisation and power-counting arguments. Combined with unitarity, these results imply that, in an effective field theory approach, the Newtonian potential receives neither classical nor quantum corrections from terms quadratic in the curvature.

Complete Form Factors in Yang-Mills from Unitarity and Spinor Helicity in Six Dimensions

We present a systematic procedure to compute complete, analytic form factors of gauge-invariant operators at loop level in pure Yang-Mills. We consider applications to operators of the form $\mathrm{Tr}\, F^n$ where $F$ is the gluon field strength. Our approach is based on an extension to form factors of the dimensional reconstruction technique, in conjunction with the six-dimensional spinor-helicity formalism and generalised unitarity. For form factors this technique requires the introduction of additional scalar operators, for which we provide a systematic prescription. We also discuss a generalisation of dimensional reconstruction to any number of loops, both for amplitudes and form factors. Several novel results for one-loop minimal and non-minimal form factors of $\mathrm{Tr}\, F^n$ with $n>2$ are presented. Finally, we describe the \texttt{Mathematica} package \texttt{SpinorHelicity6D}, which is tailored to handle six-dimensional quantities written in the spinor-helicity formalism.

The connected prescription for form factors in twistor space

We propose a connected prescription formula in twistor space for all tree-level form factors of the stress tensor multiplet operator in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills, which is a generalisation of the expression of Roiban, Spradlin and Volovich for superamplitudes. By introducing link variables, we show that our formula is identical to the recently proposed four-dimensional scattering equations for form factors. Similarly to the case of amplitudes, the link representation of form factors is shown to be directly related to BCFW recursion relations, and is considerably more tractable than the scattering equations. We also discuss how our results are related to a recent Grassmannian formulation of form factors, and comment on a possible derivation of our formula from ambitwistor strings.

Integrability and MHV diagrams in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

We apply MHV diagrams to the derivation of the one-loop dilatation operator of N=4 super Yang-Mills in the SO(6) sector. We find that in this approach the calculation reduces to the evaluation of a single MHV diagram in dimensional regularisation. This provides the first application of MHV diagrams to an off-shell quantity. We also discuss other applications of the method and future directions.

Integrability and unitarity

We show how generalised unitarity can be used to determine the one-loop dilatation operator in N=4 super Yang-Mills. Our analysis focuses on two sectors, namely the bosonic SO(6) sector and the SU(2|3) sector. The calculation is performed on shell, with no off-shell information introduced at any stage. In this way, we establish a direct connection between scattering amplitudes and the dilatation operator of the N=4 theory.

On Yangian symmetry of scattering amplitudes and the dilatation operator in N=4 super Yang-Mills

It is known that the Yangian of PSU(2,2|4) is a symmetry of the tree-level S-matrix of N=4 super Yang-Mills. On the other hand, the complete one-loop dilatation operator in the same theory commutes with the level-one Yangian generators only up to certain boundary terms found by Dolan, Nappi and Witten. Using a result by Zwiebel, we show how the Yangian symmetry of the tree-level S-matrix of N=4 super Yang-Mills implies precisely the Yangian invariance, up to boundary terms, of the one-loop dilatation operator.

One-Loop Soft Theorems via Dual Superconformal Symmetry

We study soft theorems at one loop in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills theory through finite order in the infrared regulator and to subleading order in the soft parameter δ. In particular, we derive a universal constraint from dual superconformal symmetry, which we use to bootstrap subleading log δ behaviour. Moreover, we determine the complete infrared-finite subleading soft contribution of n-point MHV amplitudes using momentum twistors. Finally, we compute the subleading log δ behaviour of one-loop NMHV ratio functions at six and seven points, finding that universality holds within but not between helicity sectors.

Simplifying instanton corrections to N=4 SYM correlators

We compute instanton corrections to non-minimal correlation functions of chiral primary operators in the N=4 super Yang-Mills super-current multiplet. Using a representation in terms of Mellin integrals, we find that these corrections can be written as conformal integrals in AdS_5 times certain "kinematic" prefactors that are independent of the instanton moduli. We then consider the consecutive, pairwise light-like limit x_{i, i+1}^2 -> 0 of such correlators, and prove that the ratio between the instanton contribution and the corresponding tree-level expression vanishes in this limit. We also speculate on the extension to the non-perturbative level of the proposed duality with polygonal Wilson loops and briefly discuss its potential implications for scattering amplitudes.

The last of the simple remainders

We compute the n-point two-loop form factors of the half-BPS operators Tr(phi_{AB}^n) in N=4 super Yang-Mills for arbitrary n >2 using generalised unitarity and symbols. These form factors are minimal in the sense that the n^{th} power of the scalar field in the operator requires the presence of at least n on-shell legs. Infrared divergences are shown to exponentiate as for amplitudes, reproducing the known cusp and collinear anomalous dimensions at two loops. We define appropriate infrared-finite remainder functions and compute them analytically for all n. The results obtained by using the known expressions of the integral functions involve complicated combinations of Goncharov multiple polylogarithms, but we show that much simpler expressions can in fact be derived using the symbol of transcendental functions. For n=3 we find a very compact remainder function expressed in terms of classical polylogarithms only. For arbitrary n>3 we are able to write all the remainder functions in terms of a single compact building block, expressed as a sum of classical polylogarithms augmented by two multiple polylogarithms. The decomposition of the symbol into specific components is crucial in order to single out a natural combination of multiple polylogarithms. Finally, we analyse in detail the behaviour of these minimal form factors in collinear and soft limits, which deviates from the usual behaviour of amplitudes and non-minimal form factors.

Two-loop Sudakov Form Factor in ABJM

We compute the two-loop Sudakov form factor in three-dimensional N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory, using generalised unitarity. As an intermediate step, we derive the non-planar part of the one-loop four-point amplitude in terms of box integrals. Our result for the Sudakov form factor is given by a single non-planar tensor integral with uniform degree of transcendentality, and is in agreement with the known infrared divergences of two-loop amplitudes in ABJM theory. We also discuss a number of interesting properties satisfied by related three-dimensional integral functions.

All one-loop amplitudes in N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory

We exploit a recently found connection between special triple-cut diagrams and tree-level recursive diagrams to derive a general formula capturing the multi-particle factorisation of arbitrary one-loop amplitudes in the ABJM theory. This formula contains certain anomalous contributions which are reminiscent of the so-called non-factorising contributions appearing in the factorisation of one-loop amplitudes in four-dimensional gauge theory. In the second part of the paper we derive a recursion relation for the supercoefficients of one-loop amplitudes in ABJM theory. By applying this recursion relation, any one-loop supercoefficient can be reduced to special triple-cut diagrams involving at least one four-point tree amplitude. In turn, this implies that any one-loop supercoefficient can be derived from tree-level recursive diagrams.

Analytic two-loop form factors in N=4 SYM

We derive a compact expression for the three-point MHV form factors of half-BPS operators in N=4 super Yang-Mills at two loops. The main tools of our calculation are generalised unitarity applied at the form factor level, and the compact expressions for supersymmetric tree-level form factors and amplitudes entering the cuts. We confirm that infrared divergences exponentiate as expected, and that collinear factorisation is entirely captured by an ABDK/BDS ansatz. Next, we construct the two-loop remainder function obtained by subtracting this ansatz from the full two-loop form factor and compute it numerically. Using symbology, combined with various physical constraints and symmetries, we find a unique solution for its symbol. With this input we construct a remarkably compact analytic expression for the remainder function, which contains only classical polylogarithms, and compare it to our numerical results. Furthermore, we make the surprising observation that our remainder is equal to the maximally transcendental piece of a closely related two-loop amplitude in QCD.

Harmony of Super Form Factors

In this paper we continue our systematic study of form factors of half-BPS operators in N=4 super Yang-Mills. In particular, we extend various techniques known for amplitudes to the case of form factors, including MHV rules, recursion relations, unitarity and dual MHV rules. As an application, we present the solution of the recursion relation for split-helicity form factors. We then consider form factors of the stress-tensor multiplet operator and of its chiral truncation, and write down supersymmetric Ward identities using chiral as well as non-chiral superspace formalisms. This allows us to obtain compact formulae for families of form factors, such as the maximally non-MHV case. Finally we generalise dual MHV rules in dual momentum space to form factors.

Tree-Level Formalism

We review two novel techniques used to calculate tree-level scattering amplitudes efficiently: MHV diagrams, and on-shell recursion relations. For the MHV diagrams, we consider applications to tree-level amplitudes and focus in particular on the N=4 supersymmetric formulation. We also briefly describe the derivation of loop amplitudes using MHV diagrams. For the recursion relations, after presenting their general proof, we discuss several applications to massless theories with and without supersymmetry, to theories with massive particles, and to graviton amplitudes in General Relativity. This article is an invited review for a special issue of Journal of Physics A devoted to "Scattering Amplitudes in Gauge Theories".

A Note on Dual MHV Diagrams in N=4 SYM

Recently a reformulation of the MHV diagram method in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in momentum twistor space was presented and was shown to be equivalent to the perturbative expansion of the expectation value of a supersymmetric Wilson loop in momentum twistor space. In this note we present related explicit Feynman rules in dual momentum space, which should have the interpretation of Wilson loop diagrams in dual momentum space. We show that these novel rules are completely equivalent to ordinary spacetime MHV rules and can be naturally viewed as their graph dual representation.

A Surprise in the Amplitude/Wilson Loop Duality

One of the many remarkable features of MHV scattering amplitudes is their conjectured equality to lightlike polygon Wilson loops, which apparently holds at all orders in perturbation theory as well as non-perturbatively. This duality is usually expressed in terms of purely four-dimensional quantities obtained by appropriate subtraction of the IR and UV divergences from amplitudes and Wilson loops respectively. In this paper we demonstrate, by explicit calculation, the completely unanticipated fact that the equality continues to hold at two loops through order epsilon in dimensional regularization for both the four-particle amplitude and the (parity-even part of the) five-particle amplitude.

Form Factors in N=4 Super Yang-Mills and Periodic Wilson Loops

We calculate form factors of half-BPS operators in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory at tree level and one loop using novel applications of recursion relations and unitarity. In particular, we determine the expression of the one-loop form factors with two scalars and an arbitrary number of positive-helicity gluons. These quantities resemble closely the MHV scattering amplitudes, including holomorphicity of the tree-level form factor, and the expansion in terms of two-mass easy box functions of the one-loop result. Next, we compare our result for these form factors to the calculation of a particular periodic Wilson loop at one loop, finding agreement. This suggests a novel duality relating form factors to periodic Wilson loops.

One-loop Amplitudes in Six-Dimensional (1,1) Theories from Generalised Unitarity

Recently, the spinor helicity formalism and on-shell superspace were developed for six-dimensional gauge theories with (1,1) supersymmetry. We combine these two techniques with (generalised) unitarity, which is a powerful technique to calculate scattering amplitudes in any massless theory. As an application we calculate one-loop superamplitudes with four and five external particles in the (1,1) theory and perform several consistency checks on our results.

Simplicity of Polygon Wilson Loops in N=4 SYM

Wilson loops with lightlike polygonal contours have been conjectured to be equivalent to MHV scattering amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills. We compute such Wilson loops for special polygonal contours at two loops in perturbation theory. Specifically, we concentrate on the remainder function R, obtained by subtracting the known ABDK/BDS ansatz from the Wilson loop. First, we consider a particular two-dimensional eight-point kinematics studied at strong coupling by Alday and Maldacena. We find numerical evidence that R is the same at weak and at strong coupling, up to an overall, coupling-dependent constant. This suggests a universality of the remainder function at strong and weak coupling for generic null polygonal Wilson loops, and therefore for arbitrary MHV amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills. We analyse the consequences of this statement. We further consider regular n-gons, and find that the remainder function is linear in n at large n through numerical computations performed up to n=30. This reproduces a general feature of the corresponding strong-coupling result.

Two-Loop Polygon Wilson Loops in N=4 SYM

We compute for the first time the two-loop corrections to arbitrary n-gon lightlike Wilson loops in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, using efficient numerical methods. The calculation is motivated by the remarkable agreement between the finite part of planar six-point MHV amplitudes and hexagon Wilson loops which has been observed at two loops. At n=6 we confirm that the ABDK/BDS ansatz must be corrected by adding a remainder function, which depends only on conformally invariant ratios of kinematic variables. We numerically compute remainder functions for n=7,8 and verify dual conformal invariance. Furthermore, we study simple and multiple collinear limits of the Wilson loop remainder functions and demonstrate that they have precisely the form required by the collinear factorisation of the corresponding two-loop n-point amplitudes. The number of distinct diagram topologies contributing to the n-gon Wilson loops does not increase with n, and there is a fixed number of "master integrals", which we have computed. Thus we have essentially computed general polygon Wilson loops, and if the correspondence with amplitudes continues to hold, all planar n-point two-loop MHV amplitudes in the N=4 theory.

Amplitudes in Pure Yang-Mills and MHV Diagrams

We show how to calculate the one-loop scattering amplitude with all gluons of negative helicity in non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory using MHV diagrams. We argue that the amplitude with all positive helicity gluons arises from a Jacobian which occurs when one performs a Backlund-type holomorphic change of variables in the lightcone Yang-Mills Lagrangian. This also results in contributions to scattering amplitudes from violations of the equivalence theorem. Furthermore, we discuss how the one-loop amplitudes with a single positive or negative helicity gluon arise in this formalism. Perturbation theory in the new variables leads to a hybrid of MHV diagrams and lightcone Yang-Mills theory.

Recursion Relations for One-Loop Gravity Amplitudes

We study the application of recursion relations to the calculation of finite one-loop gravity amplitudes. It is shown explicitly that the known four, five, and six graviton one-loop amplitudes for which the external legs have identical outgoing helicities, and the four graviton amplitude with helicities (-,+,+,+) can be derived from simple recursion relations. The latter amplitude is derived by introducing a one-loop three-point vertex of gravitons of positive helicity, which is the counterpart in gravity of the one-loop three-plus vertex in Yang-Mills. We show that new issues arise for the five point amplitude with helicities (-,+,+,+,+), where the application of known methods does not appear to work, and we discuss possible resolutions.

Non-Supersymmetric Loop Amplitudes and MHV Vertices

We show how the MHV diagram description of Yang-Mills theories can be used to study non-supersymmetric loop amplitudes. In particular, we derive a compact expression for the cut-constructible part of the general one-loop MHV multi-gluon scattering amplitude in pure Yang-Mills theory. We show that in special cases this expression reduces to known amplitudes - the amplitude with adjacent negative-helicity gluons, and the five gluon non-adjacent amplitude. Finally, we briefly discuss the twistor space interpretation of our result.

A Twistor Approach to One-Loop Amplitudes in N=1 Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory

We extend the twistor string theory inspired formalism introduced in hep-th/0407214 for calculating loop amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory to the case of N=1 (and N=2) super Yang-Mills. Our approach yields a novel representation of the gauge theory amplitudes as dispersion integrals, which are surprisingly simple to evaluate. As an application we calculate one-loop maximally helicity violating (MHV) scattering amplitudes with an arbitrary number of external legs. The result we obtain agrees precisely with the expressions for the N=1 MHV amplitudes derived previously by Bern, Dixon, Dunbar and Kosower using the cut-constructibility approach.

One-Loop Gauge Theory Amplitudes in N=4 Super Yang-Mills from MHV Vertices

We propose a new, twistor string theory inspired formalism to calculate loop amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. In this approach, maximal helicity violating (MHV) tree amplitudes of N=4 super Yang-Mills are used as vertices, using an off-shell prescription introduced by Cachazo, Svrcek and Witten, and combined into effective diagrams that incorporate large numbers of conventional Feynman diagrams. As an example, we apply this formalism to the particular class of MHV one-loop scattering amplitudes with an arbitrary number of external legs in N=4 super Yang-Mills. Remarkably, our approach naturally leads to a representation of the amplitudes as dispersion integrals, which we evaluate exactly. This yields a new, simplified form for the MHV amplitudes, which is equivalent to the expressions obtained previously by Bern, Dixon, Dunbar and Kosower using the cut-constructibility approach.

Matter From G(2) Manifolds

We describe how chiral matter charged under SU(N) and SO(2N) gauge groups arises from codimension seven singularities in compactifications of M-theory on manifolds with G(2) holonomy. The geometry of these spaces is that of a cone over a six-dimensional Einstein space which can be constructed by (multiple) unfolding of hyper-Kahler quotient spaces. In type IIA the corresponding picture is given by stacks of intersecting D6-branes and chiral matter arises from open strings stretching between them. Usually one obtains (bi)fundamental representations but by including orientifold six-planes in the type IIA picture we find more exotic representations like the anti-symmetric, which is important for the study of SU(5) grand unification, and trifundamental representations. We also exhibit many cases where the G(2) metrics can be described explicitly, although in general the metrics on the spaces constructed via unfolding are not known.

Wilson Loops, Confinement, and Phase Transitions in Large N Gauge Theories from Supergravity

We use the recently proposed supergravity approach to large $N$ gauge theories to calculate ordinary and spatial Wilson loops of gauge theories in various dimensions. In this framework we observe an area law for spatial Wilson loops in four and five dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills at finite temperature. This can be interpreted as the area law of ordinary Wilson loops in three and four dimensional non-supersymmetric gauge theories at zero temperature which indicates confinement in these theories. Furthermore, we show that super Yang Mills theories with 16 supersymmetries at finite temperature do not admit phase transitions between the weakly coupled super Yang Mills and supergravity regimes. This result is derived by analyzing the entropy and specific heat of those systems as well as by computing ordinary Wilson loops at finite temperature. The calculation of the entropy was carried out in all different regimes and indicates that there is no first order phase transition in these systems. For the same theories at zero temperature we also compute the dependence of the quark anti-quark potential on the separating distance.
