COSINT-Agent: A Knowledge-Driven Multimodal Agent for Chinese Open Source Intelligence

Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) requires the integration and reasoning of diverse multimodal data, presenting significant challenges in deriving actionable insights. Traditional approaches, including multimodal large language models (MLLMs), often struggle to infer complex contextual relationships or deliver comprehensive intelligence from unstructured data sources. In this paper, we introduce COSINT-Agent, a knowledge-driven multimodal agent tailored to address the challenges of OSINT in the Chinese domain. COSINT-Agent seamlessly integrates the perceptual capabilities of fine-tuned MLLMs with the structured reasoning power of the Entity-Event-Scene Knowledge Graph (EES-KG). Central to COSINT-Agent is the innovative EES-Match framework, which bridges COSINT-MLLM and EES-KG, enabling systematic extraction, reasoning, and contextualization of multimodal insights. This integration facilitates precise entity recognition, event interpretation, and context retrieval, effectively transforming raw multimodal data into actionable intelligence. Extensive experiments validate the superior performance of COSINT-Agent across core OSINT tasks, including entity recognition, EES generation, and context matching. These results underscore its potential as a robust and scalable solution for advancing automated multimodal reasoning and enhancing the effectiveness of OSINT methodologies.

Simulation of the 4H-SiC Low Gain Avalanche Diode

Silicon Carbide device (4H-SiC) has potential radiation hardness, high saturated carrier velocity and low temperature sensitivity theoretically. The Silicon Low Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD) has been verified to have excellent time performance. Therefore, the 4H-SiC LGAD is introduced in this work for application to detect the Minimum Ionization Particles (MIPs). We provide guidance to determine the thickness and doping level of the gain layer after an analytical analysis. The gain layer thickness $d_{gain}=0.5~μm$ is adopted in our design. We design two different types of 4H-SiC LGAD which have two types electric field, and the corresponding leakage current, capacitance and gain are simulated by TCAD tools. Through analysis of the simulation results, the advantages and disadvantages are discussed for two types of 4H-SiC LGAD.

Time Resolution of the 4H-SiC PIN Detector

We address the determination of the time resolution for the $\rm 100~μm$ 4H-SiC PIN detectors fabricated by Nanjing University (NJU). The time response to $\rm β$ particles from a $\rm ^{90}$Sr source is investigated for the detection of the minimum ionizing particles (MIPs). We study the influence of different reverse voltages, which correspond to different carrier velocities and device sizes, and how this correlates with the detector capacitance. We determine a time resolution $\rm (94\pm1)~ps$ for $\rm 100~μm$ 4H-SiC PIN detector. A fast simulation software, termed RASER (RAdiation SEmiconductoR), is developed, and validated by comparing the waveform obtained from simulated and measured data. The simulated time resolution is $\rm (73\pm 1)~ps$ after considering the intrinsic leading contributions of the detector to time resolution.

Timing performance simulation for 3D 4H-SiC detector

To meet high radiation challenge for detectors in future high-energy physics, a novel 3D 4H-SiC detector was investigated. SiC detectors could potentially operate in radiation harsh and room temperature environment because of its high thermal conductivity and high atomic displacement threshold energy. 3D structure, which decouples thickness and distance between electrodes, further improves timing performance and radiation hardness of the detector. We developed a simulation software - RASER (RAdiation SEmiconductoR) to simulate the time resolution of planar and 3D 4H-SiC detectors with different parameters and structures, and the reliability of the software is verified by comparing time resolution results of simulation with data. The rough time resolution of 3D 4H-SiC detector was estimated, and the simulation parameters could be used as guideline to 3D 4H-SiC detector design and optimization.

Multi-task transfer learning for finding actionable information from crisis-related messages on social media

The Incident streams (IS) track is a research challenge aimed at finding important information from social media during crises for emergency response purposes. More specifically, given a stream of crisis-related tweets, the IS challenge asks a participating system to 1) classify what the types of users' concerns or needs are expressed in each tweet, known as the information type (IT) classification task and 2) estimate how critical each tweet is with regard to emergency response, known as the priority level prediction task. In this paper, we describe our multi-task transfer learning approach for this challenge. Our approach leverages state-of-the-art transformer models including both encoder-based models such as BERT and a sequence-to-sequence based T5 for joint transfer learning on the two tasks. Based on this approach, we submitted several runs to the track. The returned evaluation results show that our runs substantially outperform other participating runs in both IT classification and priority level prediction.

A Generalized Dimming Control Scheme for Visible Light Communications

A novel dimming control scheme, termed as generalized dimming control (GDC), is proposed for visible light communication (VLC) systems. The proposed GDC scheme achieves dimming control by simultaneously adjusting the intensity of transmitted symbols and the number of active elements in a space-time matrix. Both the indices of the active elements in each space-time matrix and the modulated constellation symbols are used to carry information. Since illumination is deemed as the prior task of VLC, an incremental algorithm for index mapping is proposed for achieving target optical power and uniform illumination. Next, GDC having the optimal activation pattern is investigated to further improve the bit-error rate (BER) performance. In particular, the BER performance of GDC is analyzed using the union bound technique. Based on the analytical BER bound, the optimal activation pattern of GDC scheme with the minimum BER criterion (GDC-MBER) is obtained by exhaustively searching all conditional pairwise error probabilities. However, since GDC-MBER requires high search complexity, two low-complexity GDC schemes having the maximum free distance criterion (GDCMFD) are proposed. The first GDC-MFD scheme, coined as GDC-MFD1, reduces the computational complexity by deriving a lower bound of the free distance based on Rayleigh-Ritz theorem. Based on the time-invariance characteristics of the VLC channel, GDC-MFD2 is proposed to further reduce the required computation efforts. Simulation and numerical results show that GDC-MBER, GDC-MFD1 and GDC-MFD2 have similar BER performance, and they can achieve 2 dB performance gains over conventional hybrid dimming control scheme and 7 dB performance gains over digital dimming control schemes.

UCD-CS at W-NUT 2020 Shared Task-3: A Text to Text Approach for COVID-19 Event Extraction on Social Media

In this paper, we describe our approach in the shared task: COVID-19 event extraction from Twitter. The objective of this task is to extract answers from COVID-related tweets to a set of predefined slot-filling questions. Our approach treats the event extraction task as a question answering task by leveraging the transformer-based T5 text-to-text model. According to the official evaluation scores returned, namely F1, our submitted run achieves competitive performance compared to other participating runs (Top 3). However, we argue that this evaluation may underestimate the actual performance of runs based on text-generation. Although some such runs may answer the slot questions well, they may not be an exact string match for the gold standard answers. To measure the extent of this underestimation, we adopt a simple exact-answer transformation method aiming at converting the well-answered predictions to exactly-matched predictions. The results show that after this transformation our run overall reaches the same level of performance as the best participating run and state-of-the-art F1 scores in three of five COVID-related events. Light Induced Degradation of CH_3NH_3PbI_3 Thin Film

The stability of CH3NH3PbI3 was investigated by observing the damage on a co-evaporated film irradiated by a blue laser in ultrahigh vacuum. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to investigate the irradiation effects on the surface. The core levels of perovskite were observed to shift toward higher binding energy (BE) during the irradiation, suggesting that surface became more n-type. Metallic Pb appeared after 120 minutes of irradiation, indicating that the film has started to decompose. The decomposition saturated after about 480 minutes of irradiation when the ratio of metallic Pb to total Pb was about 33%. Furthermore, the film was no longer continuous after irradiation because of the stress change after irradiation, as the substrate Au and oxygen were detected by XPS. SEM images also show a roughened surface after irradiation. The results strongly indicate that the perovskite is sensitive to the laser irradiation, and the decomposition is a self-limiting process.

Degradation by Exposure of Co-Evaporated CH3NH3PbI3 Thin Films

Degradation of co-evaporated CH3NH3PbI3 thin films was investigated with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) as the films were subjected to exposure of oxygen, dry air, ambient, or H2O. The co-evaporated thin films have consistent stoichiometry and crystallinity suitable for detailed surface analysis. The results indicate that CH3NH3PbI3 is not sensitive to oxygen. Even after 10^13 Langmuire (L, one L equals 10^-6 torr sec) oxygen exposure, no O atoms could be found on the surface. The film is not sensitive to dry air as well. A reaction threshold of about 2*10^10 L is found for H2O exposure, below which no CH3NH3PbI3 degradation takes place and the H2O acts as an n-dopant. Above the threshold, the film begins to decompose, and the amount of N and I decrease quickly, leaving the surface with PbI2, amorphous C and O contamination.

Degradation of Co-Evaporated Perovskite Thin Film in Air

Methylammonium lead halide perovskites have been developed as highly promising materials to fabricate efficient solar cells in the past few years. The real impact to energy applications relies on the understanding and controlling of the stability of the material. We investigated the degradation of CH3NH3PbI3 by air exposure using x-ray diffraction (XRD), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The stoichiometric sample was grown with co-evaporation of PbI2 and CH3NH3I on a Au coated Si wafer. It was found that the perovskite thin film gradually turned to PbI2 in air, accompanied with complete removal of N and substantial reduction of I. It was also observed that PbI2 crystallization roughened the film and resulted in a partial exposure of the Au substrate.
