The fine structure of heating in a quasiperiodically driven critical quantum system

We study the heating dynamics of a generic one dimensional critical system when driven quasiperiodically. Specifically, we consider a Fibonacci drive sequence comprising the Hamiltonian of uniform conformal field theory (CFT) describing such critical systems and its sine-square deformed counterpart. The asymptotic dynamics is dictated by the Lyapunov exponent which has a fractal structure embedding Cantor lines where the exponent is exactly zero. Away from these Cantor lines, the system typically heats up fast to infinite energy in a non-ergodic manner where the quasiparticle excitations congregate at a small number of select spatial locations resulting in a build up of energy at these points. Periodic dynamics with no heating for physically relevant timescales is seen in the high frequency regime. As we traverse the fractal region and approach the Cantor lines, the heating slows enormously and the quasiparticles completely delocalise at stroboscopic times. Our setup allows us to tune between fast and ultra-slow heating regimes in integrable systems.

Anomalous bulk-edge correspondence in continuous media

Topology plays an increasing role in physics beyond the realm of topological insulators in condensed mater. From geophysical fluids to active matter, acoustics or photonics, a growing family of systems presents topologically protected chiral edge modes. The number of such modes should coincide with the bulk topological invariant (e.g. Chern number) defined for a sample without boundary, in agreement with the bulk-edge correspondence. However this is not always the case when dealing with continuous media where there is no small scale cut-off. The number of edge modes actually depends on the boundary condition, even when the bulk is properly regularized, showing an apparent paradox where the bulk-edge correspondence is violated. In this paper we solve this paradox by showing that the anomaly is due to {ghost} edge modes hidden in the asymptotic part of the spectrum. We provide a general formalism based on scattering theory to detect all edge modes properly, so that the bulk-edge correspondence is restored. We illustrate this approach through the odd-viscous shallow-water model and the massive Dirac Hamiltonian, and discuss the physical consequences.

Emergent Black Hole Dynamics in Critical Floquet Systems

While driven interacting quantum matter is generically subject to heating and scrambling, certain classes of systems evade this paradigm. We study such an exceptional class in periodically driven critical (1 + 1)-dimensional systems with a spatially modulated, but disorder-free time evolution operator. Instead of complete scrambling, the excitations of the system remain well-defined. Their propagation is analogous to the evolution along light cones in a curved space-time obtained by two Schwarzschild black holes. The Hawking temperature serves as an order parameter which distinguishes between heating and non-heating phases. Beyond a time scale determined by the inverse Hawking temperature, excitations are absorbed by the black holes resulting in a singular concentration of energy at their center. We obtain these results analytically within conformal field theory, capitalizing on a mapping to sine-square deformed field theories. Furthermore, by means of numerical calculations for an interacting XXZ spin-1/2 chain, we demonstrate that our findings survive lattice regularization.

Construction and properties of a topological index for periodically driven time-reversal invariant 2D crystals

We present mathematical details of the construction of a topological invariant for periodically driven two-dimensional lattice systems with time-reversal symmetry and quasienergy gaps, which was proposed recently by some of us. The invariant is represented by a gap-dependent $\,\mathbb Z_2$-valued index that is simply related to the Kane-Mele invariants of quasienergy bands but contains an extra information. As a byproduct, we prove new expressions for the two-dimensional Kane-Mele invariant relating the latter to Wess-Zumino amplitudes and the boundary gauge anomaly.

Global gauge anomalies in coset models of conformal field theory

We study the occurrence of global gauge anomalies in the coset models of two-dimensional conformal field theory that are based on gauged WZW models. A complete classification of the non-anomalous theories for a wide family of gauged rigid adjoint or twisted-adjoint symmetries of WZW models is achieved with the help of Dynkin's classification of Lie subalgebras of simple Lie algebras.
