Adaptive thresholding for wavelet-based nonparametric heteroskedastic variance estimation on the sphere

This paper investigates the nonparametric estimation of a heteroskedastic variance function on the sphere in a regression framework, assuming the variance belongs to a Besov regularity class. A needlet-based estimator is proposed, combining multiresolution analysis with hard thresholding. The method exploits the spatial and spectral localization of needlets to adapt to unknown smoothness and is shown to attain minimax-optimal convergence rates over Besov spaces.

Statistical classification for Raman spectra of tumoral genomic DNA

We exploit Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) to investigate aqueous droplets of genomic DNA deposited onto silver-coated silicon nanowires and we show that it is possible to efficiently discriminate between spectra of tumoral and healthy cells. To assess the robustness of the proposed technique, we develop two different statistical approaches, one based on the Principal Component Analysis of spectral data and one based on the computation of the $\ell^2$ distance between spectra. Both methods prove to be highly efficient and we test their accuracy via the so-called Cohen's $κ$ statistics. We show that the synergistic combination of the SERS spectroscopy and the statistical analysis methods leads to efficient and fast cancer diagnostic applications allowing a rapid and unexpansive discrimination between healthy and tumoral genomic DNA alternative to the more complex and expensive DNA sequencing.

LASSO estimation for spherical autoregressive processes

The purpose of the present paper is to investigate on a class of spherical functional autoregressive processes in order to introduce and study LASSO (Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator) type estimators for the corresponding autoregressive kernels, defined in the harmonic domain by means of their spectral decompositions. Some crucial properties for these estimators are proved, in particular, consistency and oracle inequalities.

Adaptive Density Estimation on the Circle by Nearly-Tight Frames

This work is concerned with the study of asymptotic properties of nonparametric density estimates in the framework of circular data. The estimation procedure here applied is based on wavelet thresholding methods: the wavelets used are the so-called Mexican needlets, which describe a nearly-tight frame on the circle. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the $L^{2}$-risk function for these estimates, in particular its adaptivity, proving that its rate of convergence is nearly optimal.

Adaptive global thresholding on the sphere

This work is concerned with the study of the adaptivity properties of nonparametric regression estimators over the $d$-dimensional sphere within the global thresholding framework. The estimators are constructed by means of a form of spherical wavelets, the so-called needlets, which enjoy strong concentration properties in both harmonic and real domains. The author establishes the convergence rates of the $L^p$-risks of these estimators, focussing on their minimax properties and proving their optimality over a scale of nonparametric regularity function spaces, namely, the Besov spaces.

On high-frequency limits of $U$-statistics in Besov spaces over compact manifolds

In this paper, quantitative bounds in high-frequency central limit theorems are derived for Poisson based $U$-statistics of arbitrary degree built by means of wavelet coefficients over compact Riemannian manifolds. The wavelets considered here are the so-called needlets, characterized by strong concentration properties and by an exact reconstruction formula. Furthermore, we consider Poisson point processes over the manifold such that the density function associated to its control measure lives in a Besov space. The main findings of this paper include new rates of convergence that depend strongly on the degree of regularity of the control measure of the underlying Poisson point process, providing a refined understanding of the connection between regularity and speed of convergence in this framework.

On normal approximations for the two-sample problem on multidimensional tori

In this paper, quantitative central limit theorems for $U$-statistics on the $q$-dimensional torus defined in the framework of the two-sample problem for Poisson processes are derived. In particular, the $U$-statistics are built over tight frames defined by wavelets, named toroidal needlets, enjoying excellent localization properties in both harmonic and frequency domains. The Berry-Esséen type bounds associated with the normal approximations for these statistics are obtained by means of the so-called Stein-Malliavin techniques on the Poisson space, as introduced by Peccati, Solé, Taqqu, Utzet (2011) and further developed by Peccati, Zheng (2010) and Bourguin, Peccati (2014). Particular cases of the proposed framework allow to consider the two-sample problem on the circle as well as the local two-sample problem on $\mathbb{R}^q$ through a local homeomorphism argument.

Block Thresholding on the Sphere

The aim of this paper is to study the nonparametric regression estimators on the sphere built by the needlet block thresholding. The block thresholding procedure proposed here follows the method introduced by Hall, Kerkyacharian and Picard in [Hall, Kerkyacharian, Picard, (1998), (1999)], modified to exploit the properties of the spherical standard needlets. Therefore, we will investigate on their convergence rates, attaining their adaptive properties over the Besov balls. This work is strongly motivated by issues arising in Cosmology and Astrophysics, concerning in particular the analysis of cosmic rays.

A Simple Proposal for Radial 3D Needlets

We present here a simple construction of a wavelet system for the three-dimensional ball, which we label \emph{Radial 3D Needlets}. The construction envisages a data collection environment where an observer located at the centre of the ball is surrounded by concentric spheres with the same pixelization at different radial distances, for any given resolution. The system is then obtained by weighting the projector operator built on the corresponding set of eigenfunctions, and performing a discretization step which turns out to be computationally very convenient. The resulting wavelets can be shown to have very good localization properties in the real and harmonic domain; their implementation is computationally very convenient, and they allow for exact reconstruction as they form a tight frame systems. Our theoretical results are supported by an extensive numerical analysis.

High-Frequency Tail Index Estimation by Nearly Tight Frames

This work develops the asymptotic properties (weak consistency and Gaussianity), in the high-frequency limit, of approximate maximum likelihood estimators for the spectral parameters of Gaussian and isotropic spherical random fields. The procedure we used exploits the so-called mexican needlet construction by Geller and Mayeli in [Geller, Mayeli (2009)]. Furthermore, we propose a plug-in procedure to optimize the precision of the estimators in terms of asymptotic variance.

Needlet-Whittle Estimates on the Unit Sphere

We study the asymptotic behaviour of needlets-based approximate maximum likelihood estimators for the spectral parameters of Gaussian and isotropic spherical random fields. We prove consistency and asymptotic Gaussianity, in the high-frequency limit, thus generalizing earlier results by Durastanti et al. (2011) based upon standard Fourier analysis on the sphere. The asymptotic results are then illustrated by an extensive Monte Carlo study.

Normal Approximations for Wavelet Coefficients on Spherical Poisson Fields

We compute explicit upper bounds on the distance between the law of a multivariate Gaussian distribution and the joint law of wavelets/needlets coefficients based on a homogeneous spherical Poisson field. In particular, we develop some results from Peccati and Zheng (2011), based on Malliavin calculus and Stein's methods, to assess the rate of convergence to Gaussianity for a triangular array of needlet coefficients with growing dimensions. Our results are motivated by astrophysical and cosmological applications, in particular related to the search for point sources in Cosmic Rays data.

Adaptive Nonparametric Regression on Spin Fiber Bundles

The construction of adaptive nonparametric procedures by means of wavelet thresholding techniques is now a classical topic in modern mathematical statistics. In this paper, we extend this framework to the analysis of nonparametric regression on sections of spin fiber bundles defined on the sphere. This can be viewed as a regression problem where the function to be estimated takes as its values algebraic curves (for instance, ellipses) rather than scalars, as usual. The problem is motivated by many important astrophysical applications, concerning for instance the analysis of the weak gravitational lensing effect, i.e. the distortion effect of gravity on the images of distant galaxies. We propose a thresholding procedure based upon the (mixed) spin needlets construction recently advocated by Geller and Marinucci (2008,2010) and Geller et al. (2008,2009), and we investigate their rates of convergence and their adaptive properties over spin Besov balls.
