A Fresh Look at ECN Traversal in the Wild

The Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) field has taken on new importance due to Low Latency, Low Loss, and Scalable throughput (L4S) technology designed for extremely latency-sensitive applications (such as cloud games and cloud-rendered VR/AR). ECN and L4S need to be supported by the client and server but also all devices in the network path. We have identified that "ECN bleaching", where an intermediate network device clears or "bleaches" the ECN flags, occurs and quantified how often that happens, why it happens and identified where in the network it happens. In this research, we conduct a comprehensive measurement study on end-to-end traversal of the ECN field using probes deployed on the Internet across different varied clients and servers. Using these probes, we identify and locate instances of ECN bleaching on various network paths on the Internet. In our six months of measurements, conducted in late 2021 and early 2022, we found the prevalence varied considerably from network to network. One cloud provider and two cellular providers bleach the ECN field as a matter of policy. Of the rest, we found 1,112 out of 129,252 routers, 4.17% of paths we measured showed ECN bleaching.

Elastoresistivity of heavily hole doped 122 iron pnictides superconductors

Nematicity in the heavily hole-doped iron pnictide superconductors remains controversial. Sizeable nematic fluctuations and even nematic orders far from a magnetic instability were declared in RbFe$_2$As$_2$ and its sister compounds. Here we report a systematic elastoresistance study of series of isovalent- and electron-doped KFe$_2$As$_2$ crystals. We found divergent elastoresistance upon cooling for all the crystals along their [110] direction. The amplitude of elastoresistivity diverges if K is substituted with larger ions or if the system is driven towards a Lifshitz transition. However, we conclude none of them necessarily indicates an independent nematic critical point. Instead, the increased nematicity can be associated with another electronic criticality. In particular, we propose a mechanism how elastoresistivity is enhanced at a Lifshitz transition.

Possibility of n-type doping in CaAl$_2$Si$_2$-type Zintl phase compound CaZn$_2X_2$ ($X$ = As, P)

Motivated by a recent theoretical suggestion that doping electrons into various CaAl$_2$Si$_2$-type Zintl phase compounds may give rise to high thermoelectric performance, we explore the possibility of n-type (electron carrier) doping of CaZn$_2X_2$ ($X$ = As, P) using first principles calculation. We consider n-type doping of CaZn$_2X_2$ with the following two situations: interstitial-site doping of alkaline earth metals $AE$ (= Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) and group 3 elements $G3$ (= Sc, Y, La), and $G3$ substitutional doping for the Ca site. The evaluation of the formation energy of these defects in various charged states reveals that the interstitial-site doping of $AE$ = Ca/Mg or $G3$ = Sc/Y, and $G3$ = La/Y substitutional doping for the Ca site are relatively favorable among the possibilities considered. In particular, the formation energy of the La substitutional doping for the Ca site is the lowest among the considered cases both for CaZn$_2X_2$ ($X$ = As, P) and is negative, which implies that La is expected to be substituted for the Ca site and provide electron carriers spontaneously. We also find that for each doping case considered, the formation energy of the defects is smaller for $X$ = As than for $X$ = P, which suggests that former is relatively easier to realize n-type doping than the latter.

Elastoresistance measurements on CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ and KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$ with the Fe site of $C_{2v}$ symmetry

We report resistance and elastoresistance measurements on (Ba$_{0.5}$K$_{0.5}$)Fe$_2$As$_2$, CaKFe$_4$As$_4$, and KCa$_2$Fe$_4$As$_4$F$_2$. The Fe-site symmetry is $D_{2d}$ in the first compound but $C_{2v}$ in the latter two, which lifts the degeneracy of the Fe $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbitals. The temperature dependence of the resistance and elastoresistance is similar between the three compounds. Especially, the [110] elastoresistance is enhanced with decreasing temperature irrespective of the Fe-site symmetry. This appears to be in conflict with recent Raman scattering studies on CaKFe$_4$As$_4$, which suggest the absence of nematic fluctuations. We consider possible ways of reconciliation and suggest that the present result is important in elucidating the origin of in-plane resistivity anisotropy in iron-based superconductors.

Electronic Origins of Large Thermoelectric Power Factor of LaOBiS2-xSex

We examined the electrical transport properties of densified LaOBiS2-xSex, which constitutes a new family of thermoelectric materials. The power factor increased with increasing concentration of Se, i.e., Se substitution led to an enhanced electrical conductivity, without suppression of the Seebeck coefficient. Hall measurements indicated that the low electrical resistivity resulted from increases in the carrier mobility, and the decrease in carrier concentration led to large absolute values of the Seebeck coefficient of the system.

High thermoelectric performance and low thermal conductivity of densified LaOBiSSe

In this study, we examined the thermoelectric properties of the layered bismuth-chalcogenide-based (BiCh2-based) compound LaOBiSSe, which is expected to be a new candidate material for thermoelectric applications. Densified samples were obtained with a hot-press method. The results of the X-ray diffraction measurements showed that the samples obtained were weakly oriented. This affected the resistivity (r) and Seebeck coefficient (S) of the samples because they are dependent upon the orientation of the crystal structure. The values obtained for the power factor (S2/r) when measured perpendicular to the pressing direction (P1) were higher than that when measured parallel to the pressing direction (P2). The thermal conductivity (k) of the samples was also sensitive to the orientation. The values of k measured along P2 were lower than that measured along P1. The highest figure-of-merit (approximately 0.36) was obtained at around 650 K in both directions, i.e., P1 and P2.

Atomically thin p-n junctions with van der Waals heterointerfaces

Semiconductor p-n junctions are essential building blocks for modern electronics and optoelectronics. In conventional semiconductors, a p-n junction produces depletion regions of free charge carriers at equilibrium and built-in potentials associated with uncompensated dopant atoms. Carrier transport across the junction occurs by diffusion and drift processes defined by the spatial extent of this region. With the advent of atomically thin van der Waals (vdW) materials and their heterostructures, we are now able to realize a p-n junction at the ultimate quantum limit. In particular, vdW junctions composed of p- and n-type semiconductors each just one unit cell thick are predicted to exhibit completely different charge transport characteristics than bulk junctions. Here we report the electronic and optoelectronic characterization of atomically thin p-n heterojunctions fabricated using vdW assembly of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). Across the p-n interface, we observe gate-tuneable diode-like current rectification and photovoltaic response. We find that the tunnelling-assisted interlayer recombination of the majority carriers is responsible for the tunability of the electronic and optoelectronic processes. Sandwiching an atomic p-n junction between graphene layers enhances collection of the photoexcited carriers. The atomically scaled vdW p-n heterostructures presented here constitute the ultimate quantum limit for functional electronic and optoelectronic components.

Identifying the `Fingerprint' of Antiferromagnetic Spin-Fluctuations on Iron-Pnictide Superconductivity

Cooper pairing in the iron-based high-Tc superconductors is often conjectured to involve bosonic fluctuations. Among the candidates are antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuations and d-orbital fluctuations amplified by phonons. Any such electron-boson interaction should alter the electron's `self-energy', and then become detectable through consequent modifications in the energy dependence of the electron's momentum and lifetime. Here we introduce a theoretical/experimental approach aimed at identifying the relevant fluctuations of iron-based superconductors by measuring effects of their self-energy. We use quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging techniques in LiFeAs to reveal strongly momentum-space anisotropic self-energy signatures that are focused along the Fe-Fe (interband scattering) direction, where the spin fluctuations of LiFeAs are concentrated. These effects coincide in energy with perturbations to the density-of-states N(ω) usually associated with the Cooper pairing interaction. We show that all the measured phenomena comprise the predicted QPI `fingerprint' of a self-energy due to antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuations, thereby distinguishing them as the predominant electron-boson interaction.

Multi-terminal electrical transport measurements of molybdenum disulphide using van der Waals heterostructure device platform

Atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors such as molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) hold great promise in electrical, optical, and mechanical devices and display novel physical phenomena such as coupled spin-valley physics and the valley Hall effect. However, the electron mobility of mono- and few-layer MoS2 has so far been substantially below theoretically predicted limits, particularly at low temperature (T), which has hampered efforts to observe its intrinsic quantum transport behaviors. Potential sources of disorder and scattering include both defects such as sulfur vacancies in the MoS2 itself, and extrinsic sources such as charged impurities and remote optical phonons from oxide dielectrics. To reduce extrinsic scattering and approach the intrinsic limit, we developed a van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure device platform where MoS2 layers are fully encapsulated within hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), and electrically contacted in a multi-terminal geometry using gate-tunable graphene electrodes. Multi-terminal magneto-transport measurements show dramatic improvements in performance, including a record-high Hall mobility reaching 34,000 cm2/Vs for 6-layer MoS2 at low T. Comparison to theory shows a decrease of 1-2 orders of magnitude in the density of charged impurities, indicating that performance at low T in previous studies was limited by extrinsic factors rather than defects in the MoS2. We also observed Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations for the first time in high-mobility monolayer and few-layer MoS2. This novel device platform therefore opens up a new way toward measurements of intrinsic properties and the study of quantum transport phenomena in 2D semiconducting materials.

Two distinct superconducting states in KFe$_2$As$_2$ under high pressure

We report measurements of ac magnetic susceptibility $χ_{ac}$ and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations in KFe$_2$As$_2$ under high pressure up to 24.7 kbar. The pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ changes from negative to positive across $P_c \sim 18$ kbar as previously reported. The ratio of the upper critical field to $T_c$, i.e, $B_{c2} / T_c$, is enhanced above $P_c$, and the shape of $χ_{ac}$ vs field curves qualitatively changes across $P_c$. DHvA oscillations smoothly evolve across $P_c$ and indicate no drastic change in the Fermi surface up to 24.7 kbar. Three dimensionality increases with pressure, while effective masses show decreasing trends. We suggest a crossover from a nodal to a full-gap $s$ wave as a possible explanation.

Effect of doping on the magnetostructural ordered phase of iron arsenides: A comparative study of the resistivity anisotropy in the doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ with doping into three different sites

In order to unravel a role of doping in the iron-based superconductors, we investigated the in-plane resistivity for BaFe$_2$As$_2$ doped at either of the three different lattice sites, Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$, BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$, and Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$, focusing on the doping effect in the low-temperature antiferromagnetic/orthorhombic (AFO) phase. A major role of doping in the high-temperature paramagnetic/tetragonal (PT) phase is known to change the Fermi surface by supplying charge carriers or by exerting chemical pressure. In the AFO phase, we found a clear correlation between the magnitude of residual resistivity and resistivity anisotropy. This indicates that the resistivity anisotropy originates from the anisotropic impurity scattering from dopant atoms. The magnitude of residual resistivity is also found to be a parameter controlling the suppression rate of AFO ordering temperature $T_s$. Therefore, the dominant role of doping in the AFO phase is to introduce disorder to the system, distinct from that in the PT phase.

Exploiting the Past to Reduce Delay in CSMA Scheduling: A High-order Markov Chain Approach

Recently several CSMA algorithms based on the Glauber dynamics model have been proposed for multihop wireless scheduling, as viable solutions to achieve the throughput optimality, yet are simple to implement. However, their delay performances still remain unsatisfactory, mainly due to the nature of the underlying Markov chains that imposes a fundamental constraint on how the link state can evolve over time. In this paper, we propose a new approach toward better queueing and delay performance, based on our observation that the algorithm needs not be Markovian, as long as it can be implemented in a distributed manner, achieve the same throughput optimality, while offering far better delay performance for general network topologies. Our approach hinges upon utilizing past state information observed by local link and then constructing a high-order Markov chain for the evolution of the feasible link schedules. We show in theory and simulation that our proposed algorithm, named delayed CSMA, adds virtually no additional overhead onto the existing CSMA-based algorithms, achieves the throughput optimality under the usual choice of link weight as a function of local queue length, and also provides much better delay performance by effectively `de-correlating' the link state process (thus removing link starvation) under any arbitrary network topology. From our extensive simulations we observe that the delay under our algorithm can be often reduced by a factor of 20 over a wide range of scenarios, compared to the standard Glauber-dynamics-based CSMA algorithm.

Fermi surface in KFe2As2 determined via de Haas-van Alphen oscillation measurements

We have completely determined the Fermi surface in KFe$_2$As$_2$ via de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) measurements. Fundamental frequencies $ε$, $α$, $ζ$, and $β$ are observed in KFe$_2$As$_2$. The first one is attributed to a hole cylinder near the X point of the Brillouin zone, while the others to hole cylinders at the $Γ$ point. We also observe magnetic breakdown frequencies between $α$ and $ζ$ and suggest a plausible explanation for them. The experimental frequencies show deviations from frequencies predicted by band structure calculations. Large effective masses up to 19 $m_e$ for $B \parallel c$ have been found, $m_e$ being the free electron mass. The carrier number and Sommerfeld coefficient of the specific heat are estimated to be 1.01 -- 1.03 holes per formula unit and 82 -- 94 mJmol$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$, respectively, which are consistent with the chemical stoichiometry and a direct measure of 93 mJmol$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$ [H. Fukazawa \textit{et al}., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. \textbf{80SA}, SA118 (2011)]. The Sommerfeld coefficient is about 9 times enhanced over a band value, suggesting the importance of low-energy spin and/or orbital fluctuations, and places KFe$_2$As$_2$ among strongly correlated metals. We have also performed dHvA measurements on Ba$_{0.07}$K$_{0.93}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and have observed the $α$ and $β$ frequencies.

Hysteretic superconducting resistive transition in Ba0.07K0.93Fe2As2

We have observed hysteresis in superconducting resistive transition curves of Ba$_{0.07}$K$_{0.93}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($T_c\sim$8 K) below about 1 K for in-plane fields. The hysteresis is not observed as the field is tilted away from the $ab$ plane by 20$^{\circ}$ or more. The temperature and angle dependences of the upper critical field indicate a strong paramagnetic effect for in-plane fields. We suggest that the hysteresis can be attributed to a first-order superconducting transition due to the paramagnetic effect. Magnetic torque data are also shown.

Beyond Random Walk and Metropolis-Hastings Samplers: Why You Should Not Backtrack for Unbiased Graph Sampling

Graph sampling via crawling has been actively considered as a generic and important tool for collecting uniform node samples so as to consistently estimate and uncover various characteristics of complex networks. The so-called simple random walk with re-weighting (SRW-rw) and Metropolis-Hastings (MH) algorithm have been popular in the literature for such unbiased graph sampling. However, an unavoidable downside of their core random walks -- slow diffusion over the space, can cause poor estimation accuracy. In this paper, we propose non-backtracking random walk with re-weighting (NBRW-rw) and MH algorithm with delayed acceptance (MHDA) which are theoretically guaranteed to achieve, at almost no additional cost, not only unbiased graph sampling but also higher efficiency (smaller asymptotic variance of the resulting unbiased estimators) than the SRW-rw and the MH algorithm, respectively. In particular, a remarkable feature of the MHDA is its applicability for any non-uniform node sampling like the MH algorithm, but ensuring better sampling efficiency than the MH algorithm. We also provide simulation results to confirm our theoretical findings.

Potential antiferromagnetic fluctuations in hole-doped iron-pnictide superconductor Ba_{1-x}K_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2} studied by ^{75}As nuclear magnetic

We have performed ^{75}As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) on single crystalline Ba_{1-x}K_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2} for x = 0.27-1. ^{75}As nuclear quadruple resonance frequency (ν_{Q}) increases linearly with increasing x. The Knight shift K in normal state shows Pauli paramagnetic behavior with slight temperature T dependence. The value of K increases gradually with increasing x. By contrast, nuclear spin- lattice relaxation rate 1/T_{1} in normal state has a large T-dependence, which indicates existence of large antiferomagnetic (AF) spin fluctuations for all x. The T-dependence of 1/T_{1} shows a gap-like behavior below approximately 100 K for 0.6 < x < 0.9. These behaviors are well explained by the change of band structure with expansion of hole Fermi surfaces and shrink and disappearance of electron Fermi surfaces at Brillouin zone (BZ) with increasing x. The anisotropy of 1/T_{1}, represented by a ratio of 1/T_{1ab} to 1/T_{1c}, is always larger than 1 for all x, which indicates that the stripe-type AF fluctuations is dominant in this system. The K in superconducting (SC) state decreases, which corresponds to appearance of spin-singlet superconductivity. The T dependence of 1/T_{1} in SC state indicates multiple-SC-gap feature. A simple two gap model analysis shows that the larger superconducting gap gradually decreases with increasing x from 0.27 to 1 and smaller gap decreases rapidly and nearly vanishes for x > 0.6 where the electron pockets in BZ disappear.

Complete Fermi surface in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ observed via Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation measurements on detwinned single crystals

We show that the Fermi surface (FS) in the antiferromagnetic phase of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ is composed of one hole and two electron pockets, all of which are three dimensional and closed, in sharp contrast to the FS observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Considerations on the carrier compensation and Sommerfeld coefficient rule out existence of unobserved FS pockets of significant sizes. A standard band structure calculation reasonably accounts for the observed FS, despite the overestimated ordered moment. The mass enhancement, the ratio of the effective mass to the band mass, is 2--3.

Cyclotron resonance and mass enhancement by electron correlation in KFe$_2$As$_2$

Cyclotron resonance (CR) measurements for the Fe-based superconductor KFe$_2$As$_2$ are performed. One signal for CR is observed, and is attributed to the two-dimensional $α$ Fermi surface at the $Γ$ point. We found a large discrepancy in the effective masses of CR [(3.4$\pm$0.05)$m_e$ ($m_e$ is the free electron mass)] and de-Haas van Alphen (dHvA) results, a direct evidence of mass enhancement due to electronic correlation. A comparison of the CR and dHvA results shows that both intra- and interband electronic correlations contribute to the mass enhancement in KFe$_2$As$_2$.

Possibility of Horizontal Line Node in KFe$_2$As$_2$ Probed by Muon Spin Rotation

The anisotropy and temperature dependence of the magnetic field penetration depth in the iron-based superconductor KFe$_2$As$_2$ have been measured down to 20 mK by means of muon spin rotation. We have observed that the flux-line lattice forms triangular symmetry when we applied the field parallel to c-axis, suggesting the interaction between vortices should be isotropic. The temperature dependence of the penetration depth observd with an applied field parallel and perpendicular to c-axis are different. These results can be accounted for by a superconducting gap function with a horizontal line node in the basal plane.

Structural quantum criticality and superconductivity in iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2

We investigated the elastic properties of the iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 with eight Co concentrations. The elastic constant C66 shows large elastic softening associated with the structural phase transition. The C66 was analyzed base on localized and itinerant pictures of Fe-3d electrons, which shows the strong electron-lattice coupling and a possible mass enhancement in this system. The results resemble those of unconventional superconductors, where the properties of the system are governed by the quantum fluctuations associated with the zero-temperature critical point of the long-range order; namely, the quantum critical point (QCP). In this system, the inverse of C66 behaves just like the magnetic susceptibility in the magnetic QCP systems. While the QCPs of these existing superconductors are all ascribed to antiferromagnetism, our systematic studies on the canonical iron-based superconductor Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 have revealed that there is a signature of "structural quantum criticality" in this material, which is so far without precedent. The elastic constant anomaly is suggested to concern with the emergence of superconductivity. These results highlight the strong electron-lattice coupling and effect of the band in this system, thus challenging the prevailing scenarios that focus on the role of the iron 3d-orbitals.

Comment on "Quantum Criticality and Nodal Superconductivity in the FeAs-Based Superconductor KFe$_2$As$_2$"

In a recent Letter [J. K. Dong et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 087005 (2010)], Dong \textit{et al}. have observed a $T^{1.5}$ dependence of resistivity $ρ$ in KFe$_2$As$_2$ at the upper critical field $B_{c2}$ = 5 T parallel to the c axis and have suggested the existence of a field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) at $B_{c2}$. In this comment, we argue that observation of a $T^{1.5}$ dependence of $ρ$ in a sample showing broad resistive transitions does not constitute evidence for a QCP and that recent dHvA results do not support the proposed QCP.

Extremely high sensitivity to uniaxial stress in pressure induced superconductivity of BaFe2As2

We have performed electrical resistivity measurements on single crystal BaFe2As2 under high pressure P up to 16 GPa with a cubic anvil apparatus, and up to 3 GPa with a modified Bridgman anvil cell. The samples were obtained from the same batch, which was grown with a self-flux method. A cubic anvil apparatus provides highly hydrostatic pressure, and a modified Bridgman anvil cell, which contains liquid pressure transmitting medium, provides quasi hydrostatic pressure. For highly hydrostatic pressure, the crystal phase and magnetic transition temperature decreases robustly with P and disappears at around 10 GPa. The superconducting phase appears adjacent to magnetic phase in narrow pressure region between 11 and 14 GPa. The tiny difference of hydrostaticity between the cubic anvil apparatus and modified Bridgman anvil cell induces a drastic effect on the phase diagram of BaFe2As2. This result indicates that small uniaxial stress along c-axis strongly suppresses the structural/antiferromagnetic ordering and stabilizes superconductivity at much lower pressure.

Fermi surface and mass enhancement in KFe$_2$As$_2$ from de Haas-van Alphen effect measurements

We report on a band structure calculation and de Haas-van Alphen measurements of KFe$_2$As$_2$. Three cylindrical Fermi surfaces are found. Effective masses of electrons range from 6 to 18$m_e$, $m_e$ being the free electron mass. Remarkable discrepancies between the calculated and observed Fermi surface areas and the large mass enhancement ($\gtrsim 3$) highlight the importance of electronic correlations in determining the electronic structures of iron pnicitide superconductors.

Single Crystal Growth and Characterization of the Iron-Based Superconductor KFe2As2 Synthesized by KAs Flux Method

Centimeter sized platelet single crystals of KFe2As2 were grown using a self-flux method. An encapsulation technique using commercial stainless steel container allowed the stable crystal growth lasting for more than 2 weeks. Ternary K-Fe-As systems with various starting compositions were examined to determine the optimal growth conditions. Employment of KAs flux led to the growth of large single crystals with the typical size of as large as 15 mm x 10 mm x 0.4 mm. The grown crystals exhibit sharp superconducting transition at 3.4 K with the transition width 0.2 K, as well as the very large residual resistivity ratio exceeding 450, evidencing the good sample quality.

Effect of K Doping on Phonons in Ba1-xKxFe2As2

The lattice dynamics of Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (x = 0.00, 0.27) have been studied by inelastic X-ray scattering measurement at room temperature. K doping induces the softening and broadening of phonon modes in the energy range E = 10-15 meV. Analysis with a Born-von Karman force-constant model indicates that the softening results from reduced interatomic force constants around (Ba,K) sites following the displacement of divalent Ba by monovalent K. The phonon broadening may be explained by the local distortions induced by the K substitution. Extra phonon modes are observed around the wave vector q = (0.5,0,0) at E = 16.5 meV for the x = 0.27 sample. These modes may arise either from the local disorder induced by K doping or from electron-phonon coupling.
