Exponential ergodicity of first order endotactic stochastic reaction systems

Chemical reaction networks are a widely accepted modeling framework for diverse science phenomena stemming from all disciplines of science, such as biochemistry, ecology, epidemiology, social and political science. In this paper we prove that every first order endotactic stochastic mass-action reaction system (SMART) is essential (i.e., every state in the state space is within a closed communicating class of the underlying continuous time Markov chain model) and is exponentially ergodic. The proof is based on a recent result on first order endotactic reaction networks in a companion paper [C.X., First order endotactic reaction networks. arXiv:2409.01598v2]. Besides, we show that a stochastic reaction system (of possibly nonlinear propensities) dominated by a first order endotactic SMART is exponentially erogdic. To demonstrate the applicability of results, we provide various examples of higher order SMART, including e.g., (1) SMART with a first order endotactic asymptotic limit as well as, (2) joint of translations of first order endotactic SMART.

Dark Energy from the Fifth Dimension

After extending the Regge-Teitelboim formulation of gravity to include the case where the background embedding space is not flat, we examine the dynamics of the four-dimensional $k=0$ Robertson-Walker (RW) manifold embedded in various five-dimensional backgrounds. We find that when the background is five-dimensional de Sitter space, the RW manifold undergoes a transition from a de-accelerating phase to an accelerating phase. This occurs before the inclusion of matter, radiation or cosmological constant sources, and thus does not require a balance of different components. We obtain a reasonable two-parameter fit of this model to the Hubble parameter data.

Asymptotic commutativity of quantized spaces: the case of $\mathbb{CP}^{p,q}$

We present a procedure for quantizing complex projective spaces $\mathbb{CP}^{p,q}$, $q\ge 1$, as well as construct relevant star products on these spaces. The quantization is made unique with the demand that it preserves the full isometry algebra of the metric. Although the isometry algebra, namely $su(p+1,q)$, is preserved by the quantization, the Killing vectors generating these isometries pick up quantum corrections. The quantization procedure is an extension of one applied recently to Euclidean $AdS_2$, where it was found that all quantum corrections to the Killing vectors vanish in the asymptotic limit, in addition to the result that the star product trivializes to pointwise product in the limit. In other words, the space is asymptotically anti-de Sitter making it a possible candidate for the $AdS/CFT$ correspondence principle. In this article, we find indications that the results for quantized Euclidean $AdS_2$ can be extended to quantized $\mathbb{CP}^{p,q}$, i.e., noncommutativity is restricted to a limited neighborhood of some origin, and these quantum spaces approach $\mathbb{CP}^{p,q}$ in the asymptotic limit.

Dynamics of continuous time Markov chains with applications

This paper contributes an in-depth study of properties of continuous time Markov chains (CTMCs) on non-negative integer lattices $\N_0^d$, with particular interest in one-dimensional CTMCs with polynomial transitions rates. Such stochastic processes are abundant in applications, in particular in biology. We characterize the structure of the state space of general CTMCs on $\N_0^d$ in terms of the set of jump vectors and their corresponding transition rate functions. For CTMCs on $\N_0$ with polynomial transition rate functions, we provide threshold criteria in terms of easily computable parameters for various dynamical properties such as explosivity, recurrence, transience, certain absorption, positive/null recurrence, implosivity, and existence and non-existence of moments of hitting times. In particular, simple sufficient conditions for exponential ergodicity of stationary distributions and quasi-stationary distributions are obtained, and the few gap cases are well-illustrated by examples. Subtle differences in conditions for different dynamical properties are revealed in terms of examples. Finally, we apply our results to stochastic reaction networks, an extended class of branching processes, a general bursty single-cell stochastic gene expression model, and population processes which are not birth-death processes.

Global Threshold Dynamics of a Stochastic Differential Equation SIS Model

In this paper, we further investigate the global dynamics of a stochastic differential equation SIS (Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible) epidemic model recently proposed in [A. Gray et al., SIAM. J. Appl. Math., 71 (2011), 876-902]. We present a stochastic threshold theorem in term of a \textit{stochastic basic reproduction number} $R_0^S:$ the disease dies out with probability one if $R_0^S<1,$ and the disease is recurrent if $R_0^S\geqslant1.$ We prove the existence and global asymptotic stability of a unique invariant density for the Fokker-Planck equation associated with the SDE SIS model when $R_0^S>1.$ In term of the profile of the invariant density, we define a \textit{persistence basic reproduction number} $R_0^P$ and give a persistence threshold theorem: the disease dies out with large probability if $R_0^P\leqslant1,$ while persists with large probability if $R_0^P>1.$ Comparing the \textit{stochastic disease prevalence} with the \textit{deterministic disease prevalence}, we discover that the stochastic prevalence is bigger than the deterministic prevalence if the deterministic basic reproduction number $R_0^D>2.$ This shows that noise may increase severity of disease. Finally, we study the asymptotic dynamics of the stochastic SIS model as the noise vanishes and establish a sharp connection with the threshold dynamics of the deterministic SIS model in term of a \textit{Limit Stochastic Threshold Theorem}.

Strong Allee Effect in A Stochastic Logistic Model with Mate Limitation and Stochastic Immigration

We propose a stochastic logistic model with mate limitation and stochastic immigration. Incorporating stochastic immigration into a continuous time Markov chain model, we derive and analyze the associated master equation. By a standard result, there exists a unique globally stable positive stationary distribution. We show that such stationary distribution admits a bimodal profile which implies that a strong Allee effect exists in the stochastic model. Such strong Allee effect disappears and threshold phenomenon emerges as the total population size goes to infinity. Stochasticity vanishes and the model becomes deterministic as the total population size goes to infinity. This implies that there is only one possible fate (either to die out or survive) for a species constrained to a specific community and whether population eventually goes extinct or persists does not depend on initial population density but on a critical inherent constant determined by birth, death and mate limitation. Such a conclusion interprets differently from the classical ordinary differential equation model and thus a paradox on strong Allee effect occurs. Such paradox illustrates the diffusion theory's dilemma.
