Dark Energy from the Fifth Dimension

After extending the Regge-Teitelboim formulation of gravity to include the case where the background embedding space is not flat, we examine the dynamics of the four-dimensional $k=0$ Robertson-Walker (RW) manifold embedded in various five-dimensional backgrounds. We find that when the background is five-dimensional de Sitter space, the RW manifold undergoes a transition from a de-accelerating phase to an accelerating phase. This occurs before the inclusion of matter, radiation or cosmological constant sources, and thus does not require a balance of different components. We obtain a reasonable two-parameter fit of this model to the Hubble parameter data.

In-vacuum microwave resonator for a compact cold atom frequency standard

A physics package for a compact cold atomic clock is hereby presented. The uniqueness of this package is its small dimensions that enable, for the first time, implementation of a primary cold atomic clock in a standard package of 3U height (=133mm). These dimensions are made possible by using an in-vacuum Microwave (MW) Loop Gap Resonator (LGR) whose length and diameter can be reduced from those of a typical resonator. Following our presentation of the design, we analyze the homogeneity of the MW field amplitude and phase. We find that the expected clock instability due to non-uniformity of the MW field is $\sim1.5\cdot10^{-14}$/day. Adding other clock errors, we estimate the total uncertainty of a cold atomic clock of this design will be around $\sim2\cdot10^{-14}$/day which results in a time drift of a few nanoseconds/day. Such a clock can serve as a primary-grade frequency reference, and may replace the cesium beam atomic clock and the GPS-disciplined rubidium atomic clocks.

Exact solutions for scalars and spinors on quantized (Euclidean) $AdS_2$ and the correspondence principle

We obtain the exact solutions to the field equations for massless scalar and massless spinor fields on quantized two-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. We then apply the AdS/CFT correspondence principle to get exact answers for the two point correlation functions of the associated operators on the boundary. The results support the conclusion that conformal symmetry on the boundary is not spoiled by quantization of the bulk. Moreover, quantization of the bulk has no effect on the spinor two-point correlation function, while it induces an overall re-scaling in the scalar two-point correlation function.

Asymptotic commutativity of quantized spaces: the case of $\mathbb{CP}^{p,q}$

We present a procedure for quantizing complex projective spaces $\mathbb{CP}^{p,q}$, $q\ge 1$, as well as construct relevant star products on these spaces. The quantization is made unique with the demand that it preserves the full isometry algebra of the metric. Although the isometry algebra, namely $su(p+1,q)$, is preserved by the quantization, the Killing vectors generating these isometries pick up quantum corrections. The quantization procedure is an extension of one applied recently to Euclidean $AdS_2$, where it was found that all quantum corrections to the Killing vectors vanish in the asymptotic limit, in addition to the result that the star product trivializes to pointwise product in the limit. In other words, the space is asymptotically anti-de Sitter making it a possible candidate for the $AdS/CFT$ correspondence principle. In this article, we find indications that the results for quantized Euclidean $AdS_2$ can be extended to quantized $\mathbb{CP}^{p,q}$, i.e., noncommutativity is restricted to a limited neighborhood of some origin, and these quantum spaces approach $\mathbb{CP}^{p,q}$ in the asymptotic limit.

Combined QCD and electroweak analysis of HERA data

A simultaneous fit of parton distribution functions (PDFs) and electroweak parameters to HERA data on deep inelastic scattering is presented. The input data are the neutral current and charged current inclusive cross sections which were previously used in the QCD analysis leading to the HERAPDF2.0 PDFs. In addition, the polarisation of the electron beam was taken into account for the ZEUS data recorded between 2004 and 2007. Results on the vector and axial-vector couplings of the Z boson to u- and d-type quarks, on the value of the electroweak mixing angle and the mass of the W boson are presented. The values obtained for the electroweak parameters are in agreement with Standard Model predictions.

Coupled-layer description of topological crystalline insulators

We introduce a coupled-layer construction to describe three-dimensional topological crystalline insulators protected by reflection symmetry. Our approach uses stacks of weakly-coupled two-dimensional Chern insulators to produce topological crystalline insulators in one higher dimension, with tunable number and location of surface Dirac cones. As an application of our formalism, we turn to a simplified model of topological crystalline insulator SnTe, showing that its protected surface states can be described using the coupled layer construction.

Limits on the effective quark radius from inclusive $ep$ scattering at HERA

The high-precision HERA data allows searches up to TeV scales for Beyond the Standard Model contributions to electron-quark scattering. Combined measurements of the inclusive deep inelastic cross sections in neutral and charged current $ep$ scattering corresponding to a luminosity of around 1 fb$^{-1}$ have been used in this analysis. A new approach to the beyond the Standard Model analysis of the inclusive $ep$ data is presented; simultaneous fits of parton distribution functions together with contributions of "new physics" processes were performed. Results are presented considering a finite radius of quarks within the quark form-factor model. The resulting 95% C.L. upper limit on the effective quark radius is $0.43\cdot 10^{-16}$ cm.

Measurement of the cross-section ratio sigma_{psi(2S)}/sigma_{J/psi(1S)} in deep inelastic exclusive ep scattering at HERA

The exclusive deep inelastic electroproduction of $ψ(2S)$ and $J/ψ(1S)$ at an $ep$ centre-of-mass energy of 317 GeV has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA in the kinematic range $2 < Q^2 < 80$ GeV$^2$, $30 < W < 210$ GeV and $|t| < 1$ GeV$^2$, where $Q^2$ is the photon virtuality, $W$ is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy and $t$ is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The data for $2 < Q^2 < 5$ GeV$^2$ were taken in the HERA I running period and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 114 pb$^{-1}$. The data for $5 < Q^2 < 80$ GeV$^2$ are from both HERA I and HERA II periods and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 468 pb$^{-1}$. The decay modes analysed were $μ^+μ^-$ and $J/ψ(1S) π^+π^-$ for the $ψ(2S)$ and $μ^+μ^-$ for the $J/ψ(1S)$. The cross-section ratio $σ_{ψ(2S)}/σ_{J/ψ(1S)}$ has been measured as a function of $Q^2, W$ and $t$. The results are compared to predictions of QCD-inspired models of exclusive vector-meson production.

Pluto's global surface composition through pixel-by-pixel Hapke modeling of New Horizons Ralph/LEISA data

On July 14th 2015, NASA's New Horizons mission gave us an unprecedented detailed view of the Pluto system. The complex compositional diversity of Pluto's encounter hemisphere was revealed by the Ralph/LEISA infrared spectrometer on board of New Horizons. We present compositional maps of Pluto defining the spatial distribution of the abundance and textural properties of the volatiles methane and nitrogen ices and non-volatiles water ice and tholin. These results are obtained by applying a pixel-by-pixel Hapke radiative transfer model to the LEISA scans. Our analysis focuses mainly on the large scale latitudinal variations of methane and nitrogen ices and aims at setting observational constraints to volatile transport models. Specifically, we find three latitudinal bands: the first, enriched in methane, extends from the pole to 55deg N, the second dominated by nitrogen, continues south to 35deg N, and the third, composed again mainly of methane, reaches 20deg N. We demonstrate that the distribution of volatiles across these surface units can be explained by differences in insolation over the past few decades. The latitudinal pattern is broken by Sputnik Planitia, a large reservoir of volatiles, with nitrogen playing the most important role. The physical properties of methane and nitrogen in this region are suggestive of the presence of a cold trap or possible volatile stratification. Furthermore our modeling results point to a possible sublimation transport of nitrogen from the northwest edge of Sputnik Planitia toward the south.

Radio Frequency Tunable Oscillator Device Based on SmB6 Microcrystal

Radio frequency tunable oscillators are vital electronic components for signal generation, characterization, and processing. They are often constructed with a resonant circuit and a 'negative' resistor, such as a Gunn-diode, involving complex structure and large footprints. Here we report that a piece of SmB6, 100 micron in size, works as a current-controlled oscillator in the 30 MHz frequency range. SmB6 is a strongly correlated Kondo insulator that was recently found to have a robust surface state likely to be protected by the topology of its electronics structure. We exploit its non-linear dynamics, and demonstrate large AC voltage outputs with frequencies from 20 Hz to 30 MHz by adjusting a small DC bias current. The behaviors of these oscillators agree well with a theoretical model describing the thermal and electronic dynamics of coupled surface and bulk states. With reduced crystal size we anticipate the device to work at higher frequencies, even in the THz regime. This type of oscillator might be realized in other materials with a metallic surface and a semiconducting bulk.

Search for a narrow baryonic state decaying to ${pK^0_S}$ and ${\bar{p}K^0_S}$ in deep inelastic scattering at HERA

A search for a narrow baryonic state in the $pK^0_S$ and $\bar{p}K^0_S$ system has been performed in $ep$ collisions at HERA with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 358 pb$^{-1}$ taken in 2003-2007. The search was performed with deep inelastic scattering events at an $ep$ centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV for exchanged photon virtuality, $Q^2$, between 20 and 100 $\rm{} GeV^{2}$. Contrary to evidence presented for such a state around 1.52 GeV in a previous ZEUS analysis using a sample of 121 pb$^{-1}$ taken in 1996-2000, no resonance peak was found in the $p(\bar{p})K^0_S$ invariant-mass distribution in the range 1.45-1.7 GeV. Upper limits on the production cross section are set.

Spinning $σ$-model solitons in $2+1$ Anti-de Sitter space

We obtain numerical solutions for rotating topological solitons of the nonlinear $σ$-model in three-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space. Two types of solutions, $i)$ and $ii)$, are found. The $σ$-model fields are everywhere well defined for both types of solutions, but they differ in their space-time domains. Any time slice of the space-time for the type $i)$ solution has a causal singularity, despite the fact that all scalars constructed the curvature tensor are bounded functions. No evidence of a horizon is seen for any of the solutions, and therefore the type $i)$ solutions have naked singularities. On the other hand, the space-time domain, along with the fields, for the type $ii)$ solutions are singularity free. Multiple families of solutions exhibiting bifurcation phenomena are found for this case.

Lorentzian Fuzzy Spheres

We show that fuzzy spheres are solutions of ${\it Lorentzian}$ IKKT matrix models. The fuzzy sphere solutions serve as toy models of closed noncommutative cosmologies where big bang/crunch singularities appear only after taking the commutative limit. The commutative limit of these solutions corresponds to a sphere embedded in Minkowski space. This `sphere' has several novel features. The induced metric does not agree with the standard metric on the sphere, and moreover, it does not have a fixed signature. The curvature computed from the induced metric is not constant, has singularities at fixed latitudes (not corresponding to the poles) and is negative. Perturbations are made about the solutions, and are shown to yield a scalar field theory on the sphere in the commutative limit. The scalar field can become tachyonic for a range of the parameters of the theory.

Matrix Model Approach to Cosmology

We perform a systematic search for rotationally invariant cosmological solutions to matrix models, or more specifically the bosonic sector of Lorentzian IKKT-type matrix models, in dimensions $d$ less than ten, specifically $d=3$ and $d=5$. After taking a continuum (or commutative) limit they yield $d-1$ dimensional space-time surfaces, with an attached Poisson structure, which can be associated with closed, open or static cosmologies. For $d=3$, we obtain recursion relations from which it is possible to generate rotationally invariant matrix solutions which yield open universes in the continuum limit. Specific examples of matrix solutions have also been found which are associated with closed and static two-dimensional space-times in the continuum limit. The solutions provide for a matrix resolution of cosmological singularities. The commutative limit reveals other desirable features, such as a solution describing a smooth transition from an initial inflation to a noninflationary era. Many of the $d=3$ solutions have analogues in higher dimensions. The case of $d=5$, in particular, has the potential for yielding realistic four-dimensional cosmologies in the continuum limit. We find four-dimensional de Sitter $dS^4$ or anti-de Sitter $AdS^4$ solutions when a totally antisymmetric term is included in the matrix action. A nontrivial Poisson structure is attached to these manifolds which represents the lowest order effect of noncommutativity. For the case of $AdS^4$, we find one particlular limit where the lowest order noncommutativity vanishes at the boundary, but not in the interior.

Production of exclusive dijets in diffractive deep inelastic scattering at HERA

Production of exclusive dijets in diffractive deep inelastic $e^\pm p$ scattering has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 372 pb$^{-1}$. The measurement was performed for $γ^*-p$ centre-of-mass energies in the range $90 < W < 250$ GeV and for photon virtualities $Q^2 > 25$ GeV$^2$. Energy and transverse-energy flows around the jet axis are presented. The cross section is presented as a function of $β$ and $ϕ$, where $β=x/x_{\rm I\!P}$, $x$ is the Bjorken variable and $x_{\rm I\!P}$ is the proton fractional longitudinal momentum loss. The angle $ϕ$ is defined by the $γ^*-$dijet plane and the $γ^*-e^\pm$ plane in the rest frame of the diffractive final state. The $ϕ$ cross section is measured in bins of $β$. The results are compared to predictions from models based on different assumptions about the nature of the diffractive exchange.

Deep inelastic cross-section measurements at large y with the ZEUS detector at HERA

The reduced cross sections for $e^{+}p$ deep inelastic scattering have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA at three different centre-of-mass energies, $318$, $251$ and $225$ GeV. The cross sections, measured double differentially in Bjorken $x$ and the virtuality, $Q^2$, were obtained in the region $0.13\ \leq\ y\ \leq\ 0.75$, where $y$ denotes the inelasticity and $5\ \leq\ Q^2\ \leq\ 110$ GeV$^2$. The proton structure functions $F_2$ and $F_L$ were extracted from the measured cross sections.

Further studies of the photoproduction of isolated photons with a jet at HERA

In this extended analysis using the ZEUS detector at HERA, the photoproduction of isolated photons together with a jet is measured for different ranges of the fractional photon energy, $x_γ^{\mathrm{meas}}$, contributing to the photon-jet final state. Cross sections are evaluated in the photon transverse-energy and pseudorapidity ranges $6 < E_T^γ < 15$ GeV and $-0.7 < η^γ < 0.9$, and for jet transverse-energy and pseudorapidity ranges $4 < E_T^{\rm jet} < 35$ GeV and $-1.5 < η^{\rm jet} < 1.8$, for an integrated luminosity of 374 $\mathrm{pb}^{-1}$. The kinematic observables studied comprise the transverse energy and pseudorapidity of the photon and the jet, the azimuthal difference between them, the fraction of proton energy taking part in the interaction, and the difference between the pseudorapidities of the photon and the jet. Higher-order theoretical calculations are compared to the results.

Measurement of beauty and charm production in deep inelastic scattering at HERA and measurement of the beauty-quark mass

The production of beauty and charm quarks in ep interactions has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA for exchanged four-momentum squared 5 < Q^2 < 1000 GeV^2 using an integrated luminosity of 354 pb^{-1}. The beauty and charm content in events with at least one jet have been extracted using the invariant mass of charged tracks associated with secondary vertices and the decay-length significance of these vertices. Differential cross sections as a function of Q^2, Bjorken x, jet transverse energy and pseudorapidity were measured and compared with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. The beauty and charm contributions to the proton structure functions were extracted from the double-differential cross section as a function of x and Q^2. The running beauty-quark mass, m_b at the scale m_b, was determined from a QCD fit at next-to-leading order to HERA data for the first time and found to be 4.07 \pm 0.14 (fit} ^{+0.01}_{-0.07} (mod.) ^{+0.05}_{-0.00} (param.) ^{+0.08}_{-0.05} (theo) GeV.

Measurement of D* photoproduction at three different centre-of-mass energies at HERA

The photoproduction of $D^{*\pm}$ mesons has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA at three different ep centre-of-mass energies, $\sqrt{s}$, of 318, 251 and 225 GeV. For each data set, $D^*$ mesons were required to have transverse momentum, $p_T^{D^*}$, and pseudorapidity, $η^{D^*}$, in the ranges $1.9 < p_T^{D^*} < 20$ GeV and $|η^{D^*}|<1.6$. The events were required to have a virtuality of the incoming photon, $Q^2$, of less than 1 GeV$^2$. The dependence on $\sqrt{s}$ was studied by normalising to the high-statistics measurement at $\sqrt{s} =318$ GeV. This led to the cancellation of a number of systematic effects both in data and theory. Predictions from next-to-leading-order QCD describe the $\sqrt{s}$ dependence of the data well.

Measurement of high-Q2 neutral current deep inelastic e+p scattering cross sections with a longitudinally polarised positron beam at HERA

Measurements of neutral current cross sections for deep inelastic scattering in e+p collisions at HERA with a longitudinally polarised positron beam are presented. The single-differential cross-sections d(sigma)/dQ2, d(sigma)/dx and d(sigma)/dy and the reduced cross-section were measured in the kinematic region Q2 > 185 GeV2 and y < 0.9, where Q2 is the four-momentum transfer squared, x the Bjorken scaling variable, and y the inelasticity of the interaction. The measurements were performed separately for positively and negatively polarised positron beams. The measurements are based on an integrated luminosity of 135.5 pb-1 collected with the ZEUS detector in 2006 and 2007 at a centre-of-mass energy of 318 GeV. The structure functions F3 and F3(gamma)Z were determined by combining the e+p results presented in this paper with previously published e-p neutral current results. The asymmetry parameter A+ is used to demonstrate the parity violation predicted in electroweak interactions. The measurements are well described by the predictions of the Standard Model.

Measurement of neutral current e+/-p cross sections at high Bjorken x with the ZEUS detector

The neutral current e+/-p cross section has been measured up to values of Bjorken x of approximately 1 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 187 inv. pb of e-p and 142 inv. pb of e+p collisions at sqrt(s) = 318GeV. Differential cross sections in x and Q2, the exchanged boson virtuality, are presented for Q2 geq 725GeV2. An improved reconstruction method and greatly increased amount of data allows a finer binning in the high-x region of the neutral current cross section and leads to a measurement with much improved precision compared to a similar earlier analysis. The measurements are compared to Standard Model expectations based on a variety of recent parton distribution functions.

Noncommutative Static Strings from Matrix Models

We examine the noncommutative cylinder solution to a matrix model with a Minkowski background metric. It can be regarded as the noncommutative analogue of a static circular string. Perturbations about the solution yield a tachyonic scalar field (and an additional tachyonic fermion in the full supersymmetric version of the model) in the commutative limit. The tachyonic mode is attributed to the fact that the circular string is unstable under uniform adiabatic deformations. We obtain a stabilizing term which when added to the matrix model removes the tachyonic mass.

BTZ Black Hole Entropy from a Chern-Simons Matrix Model

We examine a Chern-Simons matrix model which we propose as a toy model for studying the quantum nature of black holes in 2+1 gravity. Its dynamics is described by two $N\times N$ matrices, representing the two spatial coordinates. The model possesses an internal SU(N) gauge symmetry, as well as an external rotation symmetry. The latter corresponds to the rotational isometry of the BTZ solution, and does not decouple from SU(N) gauge transformations. The system contains an invariant which is quadratic in the spatial coordinates. We obtain its spectrum and degeneracy, and find that the degeneracy grows exponentially in the large $N$ limit. The usual BTZ black hole entropy formula is recovered upon identifying the quadratic invariant with the square of the black hole horizon radius. The quantum system behaves collectively as an integer (half-integer) spin particle for even (odd) $N$ under $2π$-rotations.

Projection methods and discrete gradient methods for preserving first integrals of ODEs

In this paper we study linear projection methods for approximating the solution and simultaneously preserving first integrals of autonomous ordinary differential equations. We show that (linear) projection methods are a subset of discrete gradient methods. In particular, each projection method is equivalent to a class of discrete gradient methods (where the choice of discrete gradient is arbitrary) and earlier results for discrete gradient methods also apply to projection methods. Thus we prove that for the case of preserving one first integral, under certain mild conditions, the numerical solution for a projection method exists and is locally unique, and preserves the order of accuracy of the underlying method. In the case of preserving multiple first integrals the relationship between projection methods and discrete gradient methods persists. Moreover, numerical examples show that similar existence and order results should also hold for the multiple integral case. For completeness we show how existing projection methods from the literature fit into our general framework.

Inclusive-jet photoproduction at HERA and determination of alphas

Inclusive-jet cross sections have been measured in the reaction ep->e+jet+X for photon virtuality Q2 < 1 GeV2 and gamma-p centre-of-mass energies in the region 142 < W(gamma-p) < 293 GeV with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 300 pb-1. Jets were identified using the kT, anti-kT or SIScone jet algorithms in the laboratory frame. Single-differential cross sections are presented as functions of the jet transverse energy, ETjet, and pseudorapidity, etajet, for jets with ETjet > 17 GeV and -1 < etajet < 2.5. In addition, measurements of double-differential inclusive-jet cross sections are presented as functions of ETjet in different regions of etajet. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations give a good description of the measurements, except for jets with low ETjet and high etajet. The influence of non-perturbative effects not related to hadronisation was studied. Measurements of the ratios of cross sections using different jet algorithms are also presented; the measured ratios are well described by calculations including up to O(alphas2) terms. Values of alphas(Mz) were extracted from the measurements and the energy-scale dependence of the coupling was determined. The value of alphas(Mz) extracted from the measurements based on the kT jet algorithm is alphas(Mz) = 0.1206 +0.0023 -0.0022 (exp.) +0.0042 -0.0035 (th.); the results from the anti-kT and SIScone algorithms are compatible with this value and have a similar precision.

Measurement of the t dependence in exclusive photoproduction of Upsilon(1S) mesons at HERA

The exclusive photoproduction reaction gamma p -> Upsilon(1S) p has been studied with the ZEUS detector in ep collisions at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 468 pb^-1. The measurement covers the kinematic range 60<W<220 GeV and Q^2<1 GeV^2, where W is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy and Q^2 is the photon virtuality. Particle Dynamics on Snyder space

We examine Hamiltonian formalism on Euclidean Snyder space. The latter corresponds to a lattice in the quantum theory. For any given dynamical system, it may not be possible to identify time with a real number parametrizing the evolution in the quantum theory. We obtain the dynamical time operator for the relativistic (nonrelativistic) particle, and use it to construct the generators of Poincaré (Galilei) group on Snyder space.

Production of Z0 bosons in elastic and quasi-elastic ep collisions at HERA

The production of Z0 bosons in the reaction ep -> eZ0p*, where p* stands for a proton or a low-mass nucleon resonance, has been studied in ep collisions at HERA using the ZEUS detector. The analysis is based on a data sample collected between 1996 and 2007, amounting to 496 pb-1 of integrated luminosity. The Z0 was measured in the hadronic decay mode. The elasticity of the events was ensured by a cut on eta_max < 3.0, where eta_max is the maximum pseudorapidity of energy deposits in the calorimeter defined with respect to the proton beam direction. A signal was observed at the Z0 mass. The cross section of the reaction ep -> eZ0p* was measured to be sigma(ep -> eZ0p*) = 0.13 +/- 0.06 (stat.) +/- 0.01 (syst.) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 0.16 pb. This is the first measurement of Z0 production in ep collisions.

Scaled momentum distributions for K0s and Lambda/bar Lambda in DIS at HERA

Scaled momentum distributions for the strange hadrons K0s and Lambda/bar Lambda were measured in deep inelastic ep scattering with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 330 pb-1. The evolution of these distributions with the photon virtuality, Q2, was studied in the kinematic region 10<Q2<40000 GeV2 and 0.001<x<0.75, where x is the Bjorken scaling variable. Clear scaling violations are observed. Predictions based on different approaches to fragmentation were compared to the measurements. Leading-logarithm parton-shower Monte Carlo calculations interfaced to the Lund string fragmentation model describe the data reasonably well in the whole range measured. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations based on fragmentation functions, FFs, extracted from e+e- data alone, fail to describe the measurements. The calculations based on FFs extracted from a global analysis including e+e-, ep and pp data give an improved description. The measurements presented in this paper have the potential to further constrain the FFs of quarks, anti-quarks and gluons yielding K0s and Lambda/bar Lambda strange hadrons.

Exclusive electroproduction of two pions at HERA

The exclusive electroproduction of two pions in the mass range 0.4 < Mππ < 2.5 GeV has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 82 pb-1. The analysis was carried out in the kinematic range of 2 < Q2 < 80 GeV2, 32 < W < 180 GeV and |t| < 0.6 GeV2, where Q2 is the photon virtuality, W is the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy and t is the squared four-momentum transfer at the proton vertex. The two-pion invariant-mass distribution is interpreted in terms of the pion electromagnetic form factor, |F(Mππ)|, assuming that the studied mass range includes the contributions of the ρ, ρ' and ρ" vector-meson states. The masses and widths of the resonances were obtained and the Q2 dependence of the cross-section ratios σ(ρ' \rightarrow ππ)/σ(ρ) and σ(ρ" \rightarrow ππ)/σ(ρ) was extracted. The pion form factor obtained in the present analysis is compared to that obtained in e+e- \rightarrow π+π-.

The production of beauty quarks in ep interactions has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA for exchanged four-momentum squared Q^2 > 10 GeV^2, using an integrated luminosity of 363 pb^{-1}. The beauty events were identified using electrons from semileptonic b decays with a transverse momentum 0.9 < p_T^e < 8 GeV and pseudorapidity |eta^e| < 1.5. Cross sections for beauty production were measured and compared with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. The beauty contribution to the proton structure function F_2 was extracted from the double-differential cross section as a function of Bjorken-x and Q^2.

Measurement of heavy-quark jet photoproduction at HERA

Photoproduction of beauty and charm quarks in events with at least two jets has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 133 $pb^{-1}$. The fractions of jets containing b and c quarks were extracted using the invariant mass of charged tracks associated with secondary vertices and the decay-length significance of these vertices. Differential cross sections as a function of jet transverse momentum, $p_{T}^{\text{jet}}$, and pseudorapidity, $η^{\text{jet}}$, were measured. The data are compared with previous measurements and are well described by next-to-leading-order QCD predictions.

Supersymmetric Extension of the Snyder Algebra

We obtain a minimal supersymmetric extension of the Snyder algebra and study its representations. The construction differs from the general approach given in Hatsuda and Siegel ({\tt hep-th/0311002}), and does not utilize super-de Sitter groups. The spectra of the position operators are discrete, implying a lattice description of space, and the lattice is compatible with supersymmetry transformations.

Measurement of beauty production in DIS and F_2^bbbar extraction at ZEUS

Beauty production in deep inelastic scattering with events in which a muon and a jet are observed in the final state has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 114 pb^-1. The fraction of events with beauty quarks in the data was determined using the distribution of the transverse momentum of the muon relative to the jet. The cross section for beauty production was measured in the kinematic range of photon virtuality, Q^2 > 2 Gev^2, and inelasticity, 0.05 < y < 0.7, with the requirement of a muon and a jet. Total and differential cross sections are presented and compared to QCD predictions. The beauty contribution to the structure function F_2 was extracted and is compared to theoretical predictions.

A Perturbative Approach to Fuzzifying Field Theories

We propose a procedure for computing noncommutative corrections to the metric tensor, and apply it to scalar field theory written on coordinate patches of smooth manifolds. The procedure involves finding maps to the noncommutative plane where differentiation and integration are easily defined, and introducing a star product. There are star product independent, as well as dependent, corrections. Applying the procedure for two different star products, we find the lowest order fuzzy corrections to scalar field theory on a sphere which is sterographically projected to the plane.

Can classical wormholes stabilize the brane-anti-brane system?

We investigate the static solutions of Callan and Maldecena and Gibbons to lowest order Dirac-Born-Infeld theory. Among them are charged wormhole solutions connecting branes to anti-branes. It is seen that there are no such solutions when the separation between the brane and anti-brane is smaller than some minimum value. The minimum distance coincides with the energy minimum, and depends monotonically on the charge. Making the charge sufficiently large, such that the minimum separation is much bigger than $ \sqrt{α'}$, may suppress known quantum processes leading to decay of the brane-anti-brane system. For this to be possible the zeroth order wormhole solutions should be reasonable approximations of solutions in the full $D-$brane theory. With this in mind we address the question of whether the zeroth order solutions are stable under inclusion of higher order corrections to the Dirac-Born-Infeld action.

Absence of the Holographic Principle in Noncommutative Chern-Simons Theory

We examine noncommutative Chern-Simons theory on a bounded spatial domain. We argue that upon `turning on' the noncommutativity, the edge observables, which characterized the commutative theory, move into the bulk. We show this to lowest order in the noncommutativity parameter appearing in the Moyal star product. If one includes all orders, the Hamiltonian formulation of the gauge theory ceases to exist, indicating that the Moyal star product must be modified in the presence of a boundary. Alternative descriptions are matrix models. We examine one such model, obtained by a simple truncation of Chern-Simons theory on the noncommutative plane, and express its observables in terms of Wilson lines.

$SU_q(2)$ Lattice Gauge Theory

We reformulate the Hamiltonian approach to lattice gauge theories such that, at the classical level, the gauge group does not act canonically, but instead as a Poisson-Lie group. At the quantum level, it then gets promoted to a quantum group gauge symmetry. The theory depends on two parameters - the deformation parameter $λ$ and the lattice spacing $a$. We show that the system of Kogut and Susskind is recovered when $λ\rightarrow 0$, while QCD is recovered in the continuum limit (for any $λ$). We thus have the possibility of having a two parameter regularization of QCD.

Bosonic Description of Spinning Strings in $2+1$ Dimensions

We write down a general action principle for spinning strings in 2+1 dimensional space-time without introducing Grassmann variables. The action is written solely in terms of coordinates taking values in the 2+1 Poincare group, and it has the usual string symmetries, i.e. it is invariant under a) diffeomorphisms of the world sheet and b) Poincare transformations. The system can be generalized to an arbitrary number of space-time dimensions, and also to spinning membranes and p-branes.

Current Algebra and Conformal Field Theory on a Figure Eight

We examine the dynamics of a free massless scalar field on a figure eight network. Upon requiring the scalar field to have a well defined value at the junction of the network, it is seen that the conserved currents of the theory satisfy Kirchhoff's law, that is that the current flowing into the junction equals the current flowing out. We obtain the corresponding current algebra and show that, unlike on a circle, the left- and right-moving currents on the figure eight do not in general commute in quantum theory. Since a free scalar field theory on a one dimensional spatial manifold exhibits conformal symmetry, it is natural to ask whether an analogous symmetry can be defined for the figure eight. We find that, unlike in the case of a manifold, the action plus boundary conditions for the network are not invariant under separate conformal transformations associated with left- and right-movers. Instead, the system is, at best, invariant under only a single set of transformations. Its conserved current is also found to satisfy Kirchhoff's law at the junction. We obtain the associated conserved charges, and show that they generate a Virasoro algebra. Its conformal anomaly (central charge) is computed for special values of the parameters characterizing the network.

Poisson Lie Group Symmetries for the Isotropic Rotator

We find a new Hamiltonian formulation of the classical isotropic rotator where left and right $SU(2)$ transformations are not canonical symmetries but rather Poisson Lie group symmetries. The system corresponds to the classical analog of a quantum mechanical rotator which possesses quantum group symmetries. We also examine systems of two classical interacting rotators having Poisson Lie group symmetries.

Edge Currents and Vertex Operators for Chern-Simons Gravity

We apply elementary canonical methods for the quantization of 2+1 dimensional gravity, where the dynamics is given by E. Witten's $ISO(2,1)$ Chern-Simons action. As in a previous work, our approach does not involve choice of gauge or clever manipulations of functional integrals. Instead, we just require the Gauss law constraint for gravity to be first class and also to be everywhere differentiable. When the spatial slice is a disc, the gravitational fields can either be unconstrained or constrained at the boundary of the disc. The unconstrained fields correspond to edge currents which carry a representation of the $ISO(2,1)$ Kac-Moody algebra. Unitary representations for such an algebra have been found using the method of induced representations. In the case of constrained fields, we can classify all possible boundary conditions. For several different boundary conditions, the field content of the theory reduces precisely to that of 1+1 dimensional gravity theories. We extend the above formalism to include sources. The sources take into account self- interactions. This is done by punching holes in the disc, and erecting an $ISO(2,1)$ Kac-Moody algebra on the boundary of each hole. If the hole is originally sourceless, a source can be created via the action of a vertex operator $V$. We give an explicit expression for $V$. We shall show that when acting

Poisson bracket algebra for chiral group elements in the WZNW model

We examine the Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten (WZNW) model on a circle and compute the Poisson bracket algebra for left and right moving chiral group elements. Our computations apply for arbitrary groups and boundary conditions, the latter being characterized by the monodromy matrix. Unlike in previous treatments, they do not require specifying a particular parametrization of the group valued fields in terms of angles spanning the group. We do however find it necessary to make a gauge choice, as the chiral group elements are not gauge invariant observables. (On the other hand, the quadratic form of the Poisson brackets may be defined independent of a gauge fixing.) Gauge invariant observables can be formed from the monodromy matrix and these observables are seen to commute in the quantum theory.

The Chern-Simons Source as a Conformal Family and Its Vertex Operators

In a previous work, a straightforward canonical approach to the source-free quantum Chern-Simons dynamics was developed. It makes use of neither gauge conditions nor functional integrals and needs only ideas known from QCD and quantum gravity. It gives Witten's conformal edge states in a simple way when the spatial slice is a disc. Here we extend the formalism by including sources as well. The quantum states of a source with a fixed spatial location are shown to be those of a conformal family, a result also discovered first by Witten. The internal states of a source are not thus associated with just a single ray of a Hilbert space. Vertex operators for both abelian and nonabelian sources are constructed. The regularized abelian Wilson line is proved to be a vertex operator. We also argue in favor of a similar nonabelian result. The spin-statistics theorem is established for Chern-Simons dynamics even though the sources are not described by relativistic quantum fields. The proof employs geometrical methods which we find are strikingly transparent and pleasing. It is based on the research of European physicists about ``fields localized on cones.''

Conformal Edge Currents in Chern-Simons Theories

We develop elementary canonical methods for the quantization of abelian and nonabelian Chern-Simons actions using well known ideas in gauge theories and quantum gravity. Our approach does not involve choice of gauge or clever manipulations of functional integrals. When the spatial slice is a disc, it yields Witten's edge states carrying a representation of the Kac-Moody algebra. The canonical expression for the generators of diffeomorphisms on the boundary of the disc are also found, and it is established that they are the Chern-Simons version of the Sugawara construction. This paper is a prelude to our future publications on edge states, sources, vertex operators, and their spin and statistics in 3D and 4D topological field theories.
