Automata, reduced words, and Garside shadows in Coxeter groups

In this article, we introduce and investigate a class of finite deterministic automata that all recognize the language of reduced words of a finitely generated Coxeter system (W,S). The definition of these automata is straightforward as it only requires the notion of weak order on (W,S) and the related notion of Garside shadows in (W,S), an analog of the notion of a Garside family. Then we discuss the relations between this class of automata and the canonical automaton built from Brink and Howlett's small roots. We end this article by providing partial positive answers to two conjectures: (1) the automata associated to the smallest Garside shadow is minimal; (2) the canonical automaton is minimal if and only if the support of all small roots is spherical, i.e., the corresponding root system is finite.

Chains in shard lattices and BHZ posets

For every finite Coxeter group W , we prove that the number of chains in the shard intersection lattice introduced by Reading on the one hand and in the BHZ poset introduced by Bergeron, Zabrocki and the third author on the other hand, are the same. We also show that these two partial orders are related by an equality between generating series for their M{ö}bius numbers, and provide a dimension-preserving bijection between the order complex on the BHZ poset and the pulling triangulation of the permutahedron arising from the right weak order, analogous to the bijection defined by Reading between the order complex of the shard poset and the same triangulation of the permutahedron.

Imaginary cones and limit roots of infinite Coxeter groups

Let (W,S) be an infinite Coxeter system. To each geometric representation of W is associated a root system. While a root system lives in the positive side of the isotropy cone of its associated bilinear form, an imaginary cone lives in the negative side of the isotropic cone. Precisely on the isotropic cone, between root systems and imaginary cones, lives the set E of limit points of the directions of roots (see arXiv:1112.5415). In this article we study the close relations of the imaginary cone (see arXiv:1210.5206) with the set E, which leads to new fundamental results about the structure of geometric representations of infinite Coxeter groups. In particular, we show that the W-action on E is minimal and faithful, and that E and the imaginary cone can be approximated arbitrarily well by sets of limit roots and imaginary cones of universal root subsystems of W, i.e., root systems for Coxeter groups without braid relations (the free object for Coxeter groups). Finally, we discuss open questions as well as the possible relevance of our framework in other areas such as geometric group theory.

On inversion sets and the weak order in Coxeter groups

In this article, we investigate the existence of joins in the weak order of an infinite Coxeter group W. We give a geometric characterization of the existence of a join for a subset X in W in terms of the inversion sets of its elements and their position relative to the imaginary cone. Finally, we discuss inversion sets of infinite reduced words and the notions of biconvex and biclosed sets of positive roots.

Small roots, low elements, and the weak order in Coxeter groups

In this article we provide a new finite class of elements in any Coxeter system (W,S) called low elements. They are defined from Brink and Howlett's small roots, which are strongly linked to the automatic structure of (W,S). Our first main result is to show that they form a Garside shadow in (W,S), i.e., they contain S and are closed under join (for the right weak order) and by taking suffixes. These low elements are the key to prove that all finitely generated Artin-Tits groups have a finite Garside family. This result was announced in a note with P. Dehornoy (P. Dehornoy, M. Dyer, and C. Hohlweg. Garside families in Artin-Tits monoids and low elements in Coxeter groups. Comptes Rendus Mathematique, 353:403-408., 2015.) in which the present article was referred to under the following working title: Monotonicity of dominance-depth on root systems and applications. The proof is based on a fundamental property enjoyed by small roots and which is our second main result; the set of small root is bipodal. For a natural number n, we define similarly n-low elements from n-small roots and conjecture that the set of n-small roots is bipodal, implying the set of n-low elements is a Garside shadow; we prove this conjecture for affine Coxeter groups and Coxeter groups whose graph is labelled by 3 and infinity. To prove the latter, we extend the root poset on positive roots to a weak order on the root system and define a Bruhat order on the root system, and study the paths in those orders in order to establish a criterion to prove bipodality involving only finite dihedral reflection subgroups.

Words and polynomial invariants of finite groups in non-commutative variables

Let V be a complex vector space with basis {x_1,x_2,...,x_n} and G be a finite subgroup of GL(V). The tensor algebra T(V) over the complex is isomorphic to the polynomials in the non-commutative variables x_1, x_2,..., x_n with complex coefficients. We want to give a combinatorial interpretation for the decomposition of T(V) into simple G-modules. In particular, we want to study the graded space of invariants in T(V) with respect to the action of G. We give a general method for decomposing the space T(V) into simple modules in terms of words in a Cayley graph of the group G. To apply the method to a particular group, we require a homomorphism from a subalgebra of the group algebra into the character algebra. In the case of G as the symmetric group, we give an example of this homomorphism from the descent algebra. When G is the dihedral group, we have a realization of the character algebra as a subalgebra of the group algebra. In those two cases, we have an interpretation for the graded dimensions of the invariant space in term of those words.

Isometry classes of generalized associahedra

Let $(W,S)$ be a finite Coxeter system acting by reflections on an $\mathbb R$-Euclidean space with simple roots $Δ=\{\a_s | s\in S\}$ of the same length and fundamental weights $Δ^*=\{v_s | s\in S\}$. We set $M(e)=\sum_{s\in S}κ_s v_s$, $κ_s>0$, and for $w\in W$ we set $M(w)=w(M(e))$. The permutahedron $Perm(W)$ is the convex hull of the set $\{M(w) | w\in W\}$. Given a Coxeter element $c\in W$, we have defined in a previous work a generalized associahedron $Asso_c(W)$ whose normal fan is the corresponding $c$-Cambrian fan $F_c$ defined by N. Reading. By construction, $Asso_c(W)$ is obtained from $Perm(W)$ by removing some halfspaces according to a rule prescribed by $c$. In this work, we classify the isometry classes of these realizations. More precisely, for $(W,S)$ an irreducible finite Coxeter system and $c,c'$ two Coxeter elements in $W$, we have that $Asso_{c}(W)$ and $Asso_{c'}(W)$ are isometric if and only if $μ(c') = c$ or $μ(c')=w_0c^{-1}w_0$ for $μ$ an automorphism of the Coxeter graph of $W$ such that $κ_s=κ_{μ(s)}$ for all $s\in S$. As a byproduct, we classify the isometric Cambrian fans of $W$.

Permutahedra and generalized associahedra

Given a finite Coxeter system $(W,S)$ and a Coxeter element $c$, we construct a simple polytope whose outer normal fan is N. Reading's Cambrian fan $F_c$, settling a conjecture of Reading that this is possible. We call this polytope the $c$-generalized associahedron. Our approach generalizes Loday's realization of the associahedron (a type $A$ $c$-generalized associahedron whose outer normal fan is not the cluster fan but a coarsening of the Coxeter fan arising from the Tamari lattice) to any finite Coxeter group. A crucial role in the construction is played by the $c$-singleton cones, the cones in the $c$-Cambrian fan which consist of a single maximal cone from the Coxeter fan. Moreover, if $W$ is a Weyl group and the vertices of the permutahedron are chosen in a lattice associated to $W$, then we show that our realizations have integer coordinates in this lattice.

Posets related to the connectivity set of Coxeter groups

We define the notion of connectivity set for elements of any finitely generated Coxeter group. Then we define an order related to this new statistic and show that the poset is graded and each interval is a shellable lattice. This implies that any interval is Cohen-Macauley. We also give a Galois connection between intervals in this poset and a boolean poset. This allows us to compute the Mobius function for any interval.

Realizations of the associahedron and cyclohedron

We describe many different realizations with integer coordinates for the associahedron (i.e. the Stasheff polytope) and for the cyclohedron (i.e. the Bott-Taubes polytope) and compare them to the permutahedron of type A_n and B_n respectively. The coordinates are obtained by an algorithm which uses an oriented Coxeter graph of type A_n or B_n respectively as only input and which specialises to a procedure presented by J.-L. Loday for a certain orientation of A_n. The described realizations have cambrian fans of type A and B as normal fans. This settles a conjecture of N. Reading for cambrian fans of these types.

A Solomon descent theory for the wreath products G ~ S_n

We propose an analogue of Solomon's descent theory for the case of a wreath product G ~ S_n, where G is a finite abelian group. Our construction mixes a number of ingredients: Mantaci-Reutenauer algebras, Specht's theory for the representations of wreath products, Okada's extension to wreath products of the Robinson-Schensted correspondence, Poirier's quasisymmetric functions. We insist on the functorial aspect of our definitions and explain the relation of our results with previous work concerning the hyperoctaedral group.

Coloured peak algebras and Hopf algebras

For $G$ a finite abelian group, we study the properties of general equivalence relations on $G_n=G^n\rtimes \SG_n$, the wreath product of $G$ with the symmetric group $\SG_n$, also known as the $G$-coloured symmetric group. We show that under certain conditions, some equivalence relations give rise to subalgebras of $\k G_n$ as well as graded connected Hopf subalgebras of $\bigoplus_{n\ge o} \k G_n$. In particular we construct a $G$-coloured peak subalgebra of the Mantaci-Reutenauer algebra (or $G$-coloured descent algebra). We show that the direct sum of the $G$-coloured peak algebras is a Hopf algebra. We also have similar results for a $G$-colouring of the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebras of planar binary trees. For many of the equivalence relations under study, we obtain a functor from the category of finite abelian groups to the category of graded connected Hopf algebras. We end our investigation by describing a Hopf endomorphism of the $G$-coloured descent Hopf algebra whose image is the $G$-coloured peak Hopf algebra. We outline a theory of combinatorial $G$-coloured Hopf algebra for which the $G$-coloured quasi-symmetric Hopf algebra and the graded dual to the $G$-coloured peak Hopf algebra are central objects.

Grothendieck bialgebras, Partition lattices and symmetric functions in noncommutative variables

We show that the Grothendieck bialgebra of the semi-tower of partition lattice algebras is isomorphic to the graded dual of the bialgebra of symmetric functions in noncommutative variables. In particular this isomorphism singles out a canonical new basis of the symmetric functions in noncommutative variables which would be an analogue of the Schur function basis for this bialgebra.

Minimal and maximal elements in Kazhdan-Lusztig double sided cells of $S_n$ and Robinson-Schensted correspondance

In symmetric groups, a two-sided cell is the set of all permutations which are mapped by the Robinson-Schensted correspondence on a pair of tableaux of the same shape. In this article, we show that the set of permutations in a two-sided cell which have a minimal number of inversions is the set of permutations which have a maximal number of inversions in conjugated Young subgroups. We also give an interpretation of these sets with particular tableaux, called reading tableaux. As corollary, we give the set of elements in a two-sided cell which have a maximal number of inversions.
