Geometric structures, the Gromov order, Kodaira dimensions and simplicial volume

We introduce an axiomatic definition for the Kodaira dimension and classify Thurston geometries in dimensions $\leq 5$ in terms of this Kodaira dimension. We show that the Kodaira dimension is monotone with respect to the partial order defined by maps of non-zero degree between 5-manifolds. We study the compatibility of our definition with traditional notions of Kodaira dimension, especially the highest possible Kodaira dimension. To this end, we establish a connection between the simplicial volume and the holomorphic Kodaira dimension, which in particular implies that any smooth Kähler 3-fold with non-vanishing simplicial volume has top holomorphic Kodaira dimension.

Domination between different products and finiteness of associated semi-norms

In this note we determine all possible dominations between different products of manifolds, when none of the factors of the codomain is dominated by products. As a consequence, we determine the finiteness of every product-associated functorial semi-norm on the fundamental classes of the aforementioned products. These results give partial answers to questions of M. Gromov.

Anosov diffeomorphisms of products I. Negative curvature and rational homology spheres

We show that various classes of products of manifolds do not support transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms. Exploiting the Ruelle-Sullivan cohomology class, we prove that the product of a negatively curved manifold with a rational homology sphere does not support transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms. We extend this result to products of finitely many negatively curved manifolds of dimensions at least three with a rational homology sphere that has vanishing simplicial volume. As an application of this study, we obtain new examples of manifolds that do not support transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms, including certain manifolds with non-trivial higher homotopy groups and certain products of aspherical manifolds.

The simplicial volume of mapping tori of 3-manifolds

We prove that any mapping torus of a closed 3-manifold has zero simplicial volume. When the fiber is a prime 3-manifold, classification results can be applied to show vanishing of the simplicial volume, however the case of reducible fibers is by far more subtle. We thus analyse the possible self-homeomorphisms of reducible 3-manifolds, and use this analysis to produce an explicit representative of the fundamental class of the corresponding mapping tori. To this end, we introduce a new technique for understanding self-homeomorphisms of connected sums in arbitrary dimensions on the level of classifying spaces and for computing the simplicial volume. In particular, we extend our computations to mapping tori of certain connected sums in higher dimensions. Our main result completes the picture for the vanishing of the simplicial volume of fiber bundles in dimension four. Moreover, we deduce that dimension four together with the trivial case of dimension two are the only dimensions where all mapping tori have vanishing simplicial volume. As a group theoretic consequence, we derive an alternative proof of the fact that the fundamental group $G$ of a mapping torus of a 3-manifold $M$ is Gromov hyperbolic if and only if $M$ is virtually a connected sum $\# S^2\times S^1$ and $G$ does not contain $\mathbb{Z}^2$.
