Existence and Stability of almost finite energy weak solutions to the Quantum Euler-Maxwell system

We prove the existence of global in time, finite energy, weak solutions to a quantum magnetohydrodynamic system (QMHD) with large data, modeling a charged quantum fluid interacting with a self-generated electromagnetic field. The analysis of QMHD relies upon the use of Madelung transformations. The rigorous derivation requires non-trivial smoothing estimates, which are obtained by assuming slightly higher regularity for the electromagnetic potential. These assumptions are motivated by the nonlinear dependence of the hydrodynamic system in terms of the underlying wave function dynamics, which is supercritical with respect to the bare energy bounds. Due to quantum effects on the dispersive properties of QMHD, our approach requires neither smallness nor high regularity, unlike a large amount of existing literature for Euler-Maxwell's classical system. For quantum MHD system the irrotationality and the presence of a highly nonlinear quantum stress tensor induce much stronger dispersive properties, as a byproduct of a close relationship with the classical Maxwell-Schrödinger system. Therefore the core argument is shifted to the analysis of the nonlinearities related to the formulation of the hydrodynamic variables through the Madelung transformations. The analysis carried out in section 4 shows that it is necessary to go through non-trivial smoothing estimates and these require us to assume regularity conditions, just above the energy norms, for the initial data of the Maxwellian electromagnetic potential. In the same regime of regularity, with the help of suitable local smoothing estimates, we also prove stability of both the hydrodynamic variables and the Lorentz force associated with the electromagnetic field. Genuine Hydrodynamic Analysis to the 1-D QHD system: Existence, Dispersion and Stability

In this paper we consider the one dimensional quantum hydrodynamics (QHD) system, with a genuine hydrodynamic approach. The global existence of weak solutions with large data has been obtained in [2, 3], in several space dimensions, by using the connection between the hydrodynamic variables and the Schrödinger wave function. One of the main purposes of the present paper is to overcome the need to postulate the a priori existence of a wave function that generates the hydrodynamic data. Moreover, we introduce a novel functional, related to the chemical potential in the quantum probability density $ρ\,dx$, which allow us to obtain stability properties for a large class of weak solutions in the finite energy space.

On the low Mach number limit for Quantum Navier-Stokes equations

We investigate the low Mach number limit for the 3-D quantum Navier-Stokes system. For general ill-prepared initial data, we prove strong convergence of finite energy weak solutions to weak solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Our approach relies on a quite accurate dispersive analysis for the acoustic part, governed by the well-known Bogoliubov dispersion relation for the elementary excitations of the weakly-interacting Bose gas. Once we have a control of the acoustic dispersion, the a priori bounds provided by the energy and Bresch-Desjardins entropy type estimates lead to the strong convergence. Moreover, for well-prepared data we show that the limit is a Leray weak solution, namely it satisfies the energy inequality. Solutions under consideration in this paper are not smooth enough to allow for the use of relative entropy techniques.

Global existence of finite energy weak solutions to the Quantum Navier-Stokes equations with non-trivial far-field behavior

We prove global existence of finite energy weak solutions to the quantum Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space with non trivial far-field condition in dimensions d = 2,3. The vacuum regions are included in the weak formulation of the equations. Our method consists in an invading domains approach. More precisely, by using a suitable truncation argument we construct a sequence of approximate solutions. The energy and the BD entropy bounds allow for the passage to the limit in the truncated formulation leading to a finite energy weak solution. Moreover, the result is also valid in the case of compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosity.

Linear stability analysis for 2D shear flows near Couette in the isentropic Compressible Euler equations

In this paper, we investigate linear stability properties of the 2D isentropic compressible Euler equations linearized around a shear flow given by a monotone profile, close to the Couette flow, with constant density, in the domain $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbb{R}$. We begin by directly investigating the Couette shear flow, where we characterize the linear growth of the compressible part of the fluid while proving time decay for the incompressible part (inviscid damping with slower rates). Then we extend the analysis to monotone shear flows near Couette, where we are able to give an upper bound, superlinear in time, for the compressible part of the fluid. The incompressible part enjoys an inviscid damping property, analogous to the Couette case. In the pure Couette case, we exploit the presence of an additional conservation law (which connects the vorticity and the density on the moving frame) in order to reduce the number of degrees of freedom of the system. The result then follows by using weighted energy estimates. In the general case, unfortunately, this conservation law no longer holds. Therefore we define a suitable weighted energy functional for the whole system, which can be used to estimate the irrotational component of the velocity but does not provide sharp bounds on the solenoidal component. However, even in the absence of the aforementioned additional conservation law, we are still able to show the existence of a functional relation which allows us to recover somehow the vorticity from the density, on the moving frame. By combining the weighted energy estimates with the functional relation we also recover the inviscid damping for the solenoidal component of the velocity.

On a dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii-type model for exciton-polariton condensates

We study a generalized dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii-type model arising in the description of exciton-polariton condensates. We derive global in-time existence results and various a-priori estimates for this model posed on the one-dimensional torus. Moreover, we analyze in detail the long-time behavior of spatially homogenous solutions and their respective steady states and present numerical simulations in the case of more general initial data. We also study the convergence to the corresponding adiabatic regime, which results in a single damped-driven Gross-Pitaveskii equation.

On the compactness of finite energy weak solutions to the quantum Navier-Stokes equations

We consider the Quantum Navier-Stokes system in three space dimensions. We prove compactness of finite energy weak solutions for large initial data. The main novelties are that vacuum regions are included in the weak formulation and no extra terms, like damping or cold pressure, are considered in the equations in order to define the velocity field. Our argument uses an equivalent formulation of the system in terms of an effective velocity, in order to eliminate the third order terms in the new system. It allows us to derive estimates similar to the ones available in the case of the compressible Navier-Stokes with degenerate viscosity.

Numerical simulations of X-rays Free Electron Lasers (XFEL)

We study a nonlinear Schrödinger equation which arises as an effective single particle model in X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFEL). This equation appears as a first-principles model for the beam-matter interactions that would take place in an XFEL molecular imaging experiment in \cite{frat1}. Since XFEL is more powerful by several orders of magnitude than more conventional lasers, the systematic investigation of many of the standard assumptions and approximations has attracted increased attention. In this model the electrons move under a rapidly oscillating electromagnetic field, and the convergence of the problem to an effective time-averaged one is examined. We use an operator splitting pseudo-spectral method to investigate numerically the behaviour of the model versus its time-averaged version in complex situations, namely the energy subcritical/mass supercritical case, and in the presence of a periodic lattice. We find the time averaged model to be an effective approximation, even close to blowup, for fast enough oscillations of the external field. This work extends previous analytical results for simpler cases \cite{xfel1}.

Scattering for nonlinear Schrodinger equation under partial harmonic confinement

We consider the nonlinear Schrodinger equation under a partial quadratic confinement. We show that the global dispersion corresponding to the direction(s) with no potential is enough to prove global in time Strichartz estimates, from which we infer the existence of wave operators thanks to suitable vector-fields. Conversely, given an initial Cauchy datum, the solution is global in time and asymptotically free, provided that confinement affects one spatial direction only. This stems from anisotropic Morawetz estimates, involving a marginal of the position density.

Asymptotic behavior of nonlinear Schroedinger Systems with Linear Coupling

A system of two coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equations is treated. In addition, a linear coupling which models an external driven field described by the Rabi frequency is considered. Asymptotics for large Rabi frequency are carried out. Convergence in the appropriate Strichartz space is proven. As a consequence, the global existence of the limiting system gives a criterion for the long time behavior of the original system.

On nonlinear Schrodinger type equations with nonlinear damping

We consider equations of nonlinear Schrodinger type augmented by nonlinear damping terms. We show that nonlinear damping prevents finite time blow-up in several situations, which we describe. We also prove that the presence of a quadratic confinement in all spatial directions drives the solution of our model to zero for large time. In the case without external potential we prove that the solution may not go to zero for large time due to (non-trivial) scattering.

On the XFEL Schroedinger Equation: Highly Oscillatory Magnetic Potentials and Time Averaging

We analyse a nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the time-evolution of the wave function of an electron beam, interacting selfconsistently through a Hartree-Fock nonlinearity and through the repulsive Coulomb interaction of an atomic nucleus. The electrons are supposed to move under the action of a time dependent, rapidly periodically oscillating electromagnetic potential. This can be considered a simplified effective single particle model for an X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL). We prove the existence and uniqueness for the Cauchy problem and the convergence of wave-functions to corresponding solutions of a Schrödinger equation with a time-averaged Coulomb potential in the high frequency limit for the oscillations of the electromagnetic potential.

Well-Posedness and averaging of NLS with time-periodic dispersion management

We consider the Cauchy problem for dispersion managed nonlinear Schroedinger equations, where the dispersion map is assumed to be periodic and piecewise constant in time. We establish local and global well-posedness results and the possibility of finite time blow-up. In addition, we shall study the scaling limit of fast dispersion management and establish convergence to an effective model with averaged dispersion.

Existence of solitary waves in dipolar quantum gases

We study a nonlinear Schroedinger equation arising in the mean-field description of dipolar quantum gases. Under the assumption of sufficiently strong dipolar interactions, the existence of standing waves, and hence solitons, is proved together with some of their properties. This gives a rigorous argument for the possible existence of solitary waves in Bose-Einstein condensates, which originate solely due to the dipolar interaction between the particles.

On the Cauchy Problem for nonlinear Schrödinger equations with rotation

We consider the Cauchy problem for (energy-subcritical) nonlinear Schrödinger equations with sub-quadratic external potentials and an additional angular momentum rotation term. This equation is a well-known model for superfluid quantum gases in rotating traps. We prove global existence (in the energy space) for defocusing nonlinearities without any restriction on the rotation frequency, generalizing earlier results given in [11,12]. Moreover, we find that the rotation term has a considerable influence in proving finite time blow-up in the focusing case.

The Quantum Hydrodynamics system in two space dimensions

In this paper we study global existence of weak solutions for the Quantum Hydrodynamics System in 2-D in the space of energy. We do not require any additional regularity and/or smallness assumptions on the initial data. Our approach replaces the WKB formalism with a polar decomposition theory which is not limited by the presence of vacuum regions. In this way we set up a self consistent theory, based only on particle density and current density, which does not need to define velocity fields in the nodal regions. The mathematical techniques we use in this paper are based on uniform (with respect to the approximating parameter) Strichartz estimates and the local smoothing property.
