Learning Dense Visual Descriptors using Image Augmentations for Robot Manipulation Tasks

We propose a self-supervised training approach for learning view-invariant dense visual descriptors using image augmentations. Unlike existing works, which often require complex datasets, such as registered RGBD sequences, we train on an unordered set of RGB images. This allows for learning from a single camera view, e.g., in an existing robotic cell with a fix-mounted camera. We create synthetic views and dense pixel correspondences using data augmentations. We find our descriptors are competitive to the existing methods, despite the simpler data recording and setup requirements. We show that training on synthetic correspondences provides descriptor consistency across a broad range of camera views. We compare against training with geometric correspondence from multiple views and provide ablation studies. We also show a robotic bin-picking experiment using descriptors learned from a fix-mounted camera for defining grasp preferences.

Time-assisted energy reconstruction in a highly-granular hadronic calorimeter

The software compensation algorithms developed for the CALICE Analog Hadron Calorimeter are extended to incorporate time information on the cell level, and the performance is studied in GEANT4 simulations with a detector model of a highly-granular SiPM-on-tile calorimeter. The addition of nanosecond-level time resolution is found to result in significant improvement of the energy resolution by approximately 3% to 4% for local software compensation compared to the software compensation based on local energy density alone, with further improvement possible with better timing resolution. The high correlation of energy density and time variables show that both provide sensitivity to correlated underlying shower features, which limits the potential of timing information when used as a global rather than a local variable.

Tête-à-tête graphs and twists

This is a PhD thesis in low-dimensional topology. Its main purpose is to examine so-called tête-à-tête twists. Those were defined by A'Campo and give an easy combinatorial description of certain mapping classes on surfaces with boundary. Whereas the well-known Dehn twists are twists around a simple closed curve, tête-à-tête twists are twists around a graph. It is shown that tête-à-tête twists describe all the (freely) periodic mapping classes. This leads, among other things, to a stronger version of Wiman's 4g+2 theorem from 1895 for surfaces with boundary. On closed surfaces, some tête-à-tête twists can be used to generate the mapping class group. Another main result is a simple criterion to decide whether a Seifert surface of a link is a fibre surface. This gives a short topological proof of the fact that a Murasugi is fibred if and only if its two summands are.
