Expansivity and unique shadowing

Let f ⁣:X→Xf\colon X\to X be a continuous function on a compact metric space. We show that shadowing is equivalent to backwards shadowing and two-sided shadowing when the map ff is onto. Using this we go on to show that, for expansive surjective maps the properties shadowing, two-sided shadowing, s-limit shadowing and two-sided s-limit shadowing are equivalent. We show that ff is positively expansive and has shadowing if and only if it has unique shadowing (i.e.\ each pseudo-orbit is shadowed by a unique point), extending a result implicit in Walter's proof that positively expansive maps with shadowing are topologically stable. We use the aforementioned result on two-sided shadowing to find an equivalent characterisation of shadowing and expansivity and extend these results to the notion of nn-expansivity due to Morales.

Shadowing, internal chain transitivity and αα-limit sets

Let f ⁣:X→Xf \colon X \to X be a continuous map on a compact metric space XX and let αfα_f, ωfω_f and ICTfICT_f denote the set of αα-limit sets, ωω-limit sets and nonempty closed internally chain transitive sets respectively. We show that if the map ff has shadowing then every element of ICTfICT_f can be approximated (to any prescribed accuracy) by both the αα-limit set and the ωω-limit set of a full-trajectory. Furthermore, if ff is additionally c-expansive then every element of ICTfICT_f is equal to both the αα-limit set and the ωω-limit set of a full-trajectory. In particular this means that shadowing guarantees that αf‾=ωf‾=ICT(f)\overline{α_f}=\overline{ω_f}=ICT(f) (where the closures are taken with respect to the Hausdorff topology on the space of compact sets), whilst the addition of c-expansivity entails αf=ωf=ICT(f)α_f=ω_f=ICT(f). We progress by introducing novel variants of shadowing which we use to characterise both maps for which αf‾=ICT(f)\overline{α_f}=ICT(f) and maps for which αf=ICT(f)α_f=ICT(f).

Equicontinuity, Transitivity and Sensitivity: the Auslander-Yorke Dichotomy Revisited

We discuss topological equicontinuity and even continuity in dynamical systems. In doing so we provide a classification of topologically transitive dynamical systems in terms of equicontinuity pairs, give a generalisation of the Auslander-Yorke Dichotomy for minimal systems and show there exists a transitive system with an even continuity pair but no equicontinuity point. We define what it means for a system to be eventually sensitive; we give a dichotomy for transitive dynamical systems in relation to eventual sensitivity. Along the way we define a property called splitting and discuss its relation to some existing notions of chaos.

Preservation of shadowing in discrete dynamical systems

We look at the preservation of various notions of shadowing in discrete dynamical systems under inverse limits, products, factor maps and the induced maps for symmetric products and hyperspaces. The shadowing properties we consider are the following: shadowing, h-shadowing, eventual shadowing, orbital shadowing, strong orbital shadowing, the first and second weak shadowing properties, limit shadowing, s-limit shadowing, orbital limit shadowing and inverse shadowing.

Shadowing and Expansivity in Sub-Spaces

We address various notions of shadowing and expansivity for continuous maps restricted to a proper subset of their domain. We prove new equivalences of shadowing and expansive properties, we demonstrate under what conditions certain expanding maps have shadowing, and generalize some known results in this area. We also investigate the impact of our theory on maps of the interval, in which context some of our results can be extended.

On the omega-limit sets of tent maps

For a continuous map f on a compact metric space (X,d), a subset D of X is internally chain transitive if for every x and y in D and every delta > 0 there is a sequence of points {x=x_0,x_1, ...,x_n=y} such that d(f(x_i),x_{i+1}) < delta for i=0,1, ...,n-1. It is known that every omega-limit set is internally chain transitive; in earlier work it was shown that for X a shift of finite type, a closed subset D of X is internally chain transitive if and only if D is an omega-limit set for some point in X, and that the same is also true for the tent map with slope equal to 2. In this paper, we prove that for tent maps whose critical point c=1/2 is periodic, every closed, internally chain transitive set is necessarily an omega-limit set. Furthermore, we show that there are at least countably many tent maps with non-recurrent critical point for which there is a closed, internally chain transitive set which is not an omega-limit set. Together, these results lead us to conjecture that for those tent maps with shadowing (or pseudo-orbit tracing), the omega-limit sets are precisely those sets having internal chain transitivity.
