Evolution from helical to collinear ferromagnetic order of the Eu2+^{2+} spins in RbEu(Fe1−x_{1-x}Nix_{x})4_{4}As4_{4}

The ground-state magnetic structures of the Eu2+^{2+} spins in recently discovered RbEu(Fe1−x_{1-x}Nix_{x})4_{4}As4_{4} superconductors have been investigated by neutron powder diffraction measurements. It is found that as the superconductivity gets suppressed with the increase of Ni doping, the magnetic propagation vector of the Eu sublattice diminishes, corresponding to the decrease of the rotation angle between the moments in neighboring Eu layers. The ferromagnetic Eu layers are helically modulated along the c\mathit{c} axis with an incommensurate magnetic propagation vector in both the ferromagnetic superconductor RbEu(Fe0.95_{0.95}Ni0.05_{0.05})4_{4}As4_{4} and the superconducting ferromagnet RbEu(Fe0.93_{0.93}Ni0.07_{0.07})4_{4}As4_{4}. Such a helical structure transforms into a purely collinear ferromagnetic structure for non-superconducting RbEu(Fe0.91_{0.91}Ni0.09_{0.09})4_{4}As4_{4}, with all the Eu2+^{2+} spins lying along the tetragonal (1 1 0) direction. The evolution from helical to collinear ferromagnetic order of the Eu2+^{2+} spins with increasing Ni doping is supported by first-principles calculations. The variation of the rotation angle between adjacent Eu2+^{2+} layers can be well explained by considering the change of magnetic exchange couplings mediated by the indirect Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction.

Neutron-diffraction and linear {Grüneisen} parameter studies of magnetism in NdFe2_2Ga8_8

We study the magnetism in NdFe2_2Ga8_8 by the neutron-diffraction and temperature-modulated linear {Grüneisen} parameter measurements. Previous thermodynamical measurements have demonstrated that there are two magnetic transitions at 10 and 14.5 K, respectively. Neutron-diffraction measurements confirm that the lower one is an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition with a commensurate magnetic structure. Both the commensurate and the incommensurate (IC) magnetic peaks are found below the higher transition but their intensities only gradually increase with decreasing temperature. Below 10 K, the commensurate peak intensity increases quickly with decreasing temperature, signaling the AFM transition, while the IC peak intensity disappears below 5 K. The linear {Grüneisen} parameter along the cc axis, ΓcΓ_c, shows a hysteresis behavior that is different from the hysteresis behavior for the magnetization MM. We give a discussion of the origin of the magnetism in NdFe2_2Ga8_8.

Structural and magnetic properties of the quasicrystal approximant Au65_{65}Ga21_{21}Tb14_{14}

Magnetic properties of the quasicrystal approximant Au65_{65}Ga21_{21}Tb14_{14} were investigated by the magnetization and the neutron diffraction experiments. The temperature dependences of the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization curve indicate dominant ferromagnetic interactions, while the whirling antiferromagnetic order was found from the neutron diffraction experiments. In the antiferromagnetic phase, the magnetic moments are aligned almost perpendicular to a pseudo five-fold symmetry axis, which should correspond to the easy-axis direction of a Tb atom. The magnetic properties similar to those of Au72_{72}Al14_{14}Tb14_{14} in spite of the difference in the electron-per-atom ratio suggest the robustness of the easy-axis anisotropy against the chemical substitution of the nonmagnetic atoms.

Zigzag magnetic order in a novel tellurate compound Na4−δ_{4-δ}NiTeO6_{6} with S\mathit{S} = 1 chains

Na4−δ_{4-δ}NiTeO6_{6} is a rare example in the transition-metal tellurate family of realizing an SS = 1 spin-chain structure. By performing neutron powder diffraction measurements, the ground-state magnetic structure of Na4−δ_{4-δ}NiTeO6_{6} is determined. These measurements reveal that below TNT\rm_{N} ∼{\sim} 6.8(2) K, the Ni2+^{2+} moments form a screwed ferromagnetic (FM) spin-chain structure running along the crystallographic aa axis but these FM spin chains are coupled antiferromagnetically along the bb and cc directions, giving rise to a magnetic propagation vector of kk = (0, 1/2, 1/2). This zigzag magnetic order is well supported by first-principles calculations. The moment size of Ni2+^{2+} spins is determined to be 2.1(1) μμB\rm_{B} at 3 K, suggesting a significant quenching of the orbital moment due to the crystalline electric field (CEF) effect. The previously reported metamagnetic transition near HCH\rm_{C} ∼{\sim} 0.1 T can be understood as a field-induced spin-flip transition. The relatively easy tunability of the dimensionality of its magnetism by external parameters makes Na4−δ_{4-δ}NiTeO6_{6} a promising candidate for further exploring various types of novel spin-chain physics.

Striping of orbital-order with charge-disorder in optimally doped manganites

The phase diagrams of LaMnO3_3 perovskites have been intensely studied due to the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) exhibited by compositions around the 38th\frac{3}{8}^{th} doping level. However, phase segregation between ferromagnetic (FM) metallic and antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulating states, which itself is believed to be responsible for the colossal change in resistance under applied magnetic field, has prevented an atomistic-level understanding of the orbital ordered (OO) state at this doping level. Here, through the detailed crystallographic analysis of the phase diagram of a prototype system (AMn3A′_3^{A'}Mn4B_4^BO12_{12}), we show that the superposition of two distinct lattice modes gives rise to a striping of OO Jahn-Teller active Mn3+^{3+} and charge disordered (CD) Mn3.5+^{3.5+} layers in a 1:3 ratio. This superposition only gives a cancellation of the Jahn-Teller-like displacements at the critical doping level. This striping of CD Mn3.5+^{3.5+} with Mn3+^{3+} provides a natural mechanism though which long range OO can melt, giving way to a conducting state.

Magnetic ordering and spin dynamics in S=5/2S=5/2 staggered triangular lattice antiferromagnet Ba2_2MnTeO6_6

We report studies of the magnetic properties of a staggered stacked triangular lattice Ba2_2MnTeO6_6 using magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, neutron powder diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering measurements, as well as first principles density functional theory calculations. Neutron diffraction measurements reveal an antiferromagnetic order with a propagated vector k=(0.5,0.5,0)\textbf{\emph{k}}=(0.5, 0.5, 0) and N{é}el transition temperature of TN≈20T_\text{N}\approx20 K. The dominant interaction derived from the Curie-Weiss fitting to the inverse DC susceptibility is antiferromagnetic. Through modelling the INS spectrum with the linear spin wave theory, the magnetic exchange interactions for the nearest intralayer, nearest interlayer, and next nearest interlayer are determined to be J1=0.27(3),J2=0.27(3),J_1=0.27(3),J_2=0.27(3), and J3=−0.05(1)J_3=-0.05(1) meV, respectively, and a small value of easy-axis anisotropy of Dzz=−0.01D_{zz}=-0.01 meV is introduced. We derive a magnetic phase diagram that reveals that it is the competition between J1,J2J_1, J_2, and J3J_3 that stabilizes the collinear stripe-type antiferromagnetic order.

Interplay between the magnetic and electric degrees-of-freedom in multiferroic Co3TeO6

Neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and dielectric constant measurements of single crystal Co3TeO6 have been measured to study the interplay between the ferroelectricity and magnetic order. Long range incommensurate magnetic order develops below TM1=26 K, which is followed by three additional zero-field phase transitions at TM2=19.5 K, TM3=18 K, and TM4=16 K where the incommensurate order changes and commensurate order develops. In magnetic fields up to 14 T we find that the magnetic intensities and incommensurate wave vector are dramatically altered as ferroelectricity develops, with a fifth abrupt transition around 10 T. The overall behavior characterizes Co3TeO6 as a type-II multiferroic.
