Opinion Mining for Relating Subjective Expressions and Annual Earnings in US Financial Statements

Financial statements contain quantitative information and manager's subjective evaluation of firm's financial status. Using information released in U.S. 10-K filings. Both qualitative and quantitative appraisals are crucial for quality financial decisions. To extract such opinioned statements from the reports, we built tagging models based on the conditional random field (CRF) techniques, considering a variety of combinations of linguistic factors including morphology, orthography, predicate-argument structure, syntax, and simple semantics. Our results show that the CRF models are reasonably effective to find opinion holders in experiments when we adopted the popular MPQA corpus for training and testing. The contribution of our paper is to identify opinion patterns in multiword expressions (MWEs) forms rather than in single word forms. We find that the managers of corporations attempt to use more optimistic words to obfuscate negative financial performance and to accentuate the positive financial performance. Our results also show that decreasing earnings were often accompanied by ambiguous and mild statements in the reporting year and that increasing earnings were stated in assertive and positive way.

Spin-charge conversion in multiterminal Aharonov-Casher ring coupled to precessing ferromagnets: A charge conserving Floquet-nonequilibrium Green function approach

We derive a non-perturbative solution to the Floquet-nonequilibrium Green function (Floquet-NEGF) describing open quantum systems periodically driven by an external field of arbitrary strength of frequency. By adopting the reduced-zone scheme, we obtain expressions rendering conserved charge currents for any given maximum number of photons, distinguishable from other existed Floquet-NEGF-based expressions where, less feasible, infinite number of photons needed to be taken into account to ensure the conservation. To justify our derived formalism and to investigate spin-charge conversions by spin-orbit coupling (SOC), we consider the spin-driven setups as reciprocal to the electric-driven setups in S. Souma et. al., Phys. Rev. B 70, 195346 (2004) and Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 106602 (2005). In our setups, pure spin currents are driven by the magnetization dynamics of a precessing ferromagnetic (FM) island and then are pumped into the adjacent two- or four-terminal mesoscopic Aharonov-Casher (AC) ring of Rashba SOC where spin-charge conversions take place. Our spin-driven results show reciprocal features that excellently agree with the findings in the electric-driven setups mentioned above. We propose two types of symmetry operations, under which the AC ring Hamiltonian is invariant, to argue the relations of the pumped/converted currents in the leads within the same or between different pumping configurations. The symmetry arguments are independent of the ring width and the number of open channels in the leads, terminals, and precessing FM islands, In particular, net pure in-plane spin currents and pure spin currents can be generated in the leads for certain setups of two terminals and two precessing FM islands with the current magnitude and polarization direction tunable by the pumping configuration, gate voltage covering the two-terminal AC ring in between the FM islands.

Quantum coherence and its dephasing in the giant spin Hall effect and nonlocal voltage generated by magnetotransport through multiterminal graphene bars

Motivated by the recent experimental observation [D. A. Abanin et al., Science 323, 328 (2011)] of nonlocality in magnetotransport near the Dirac point in six-terminal graphene Hall bars, for a wide range of temperatures and magnetic fields, we develop a nonequilibrium Green function (NEGF) theory of this phenomenon. In the phase-coherent regime and strong magnetic field, we find large spin Hall (SH) conductance in four-terminal bridges, where the SH current is pure only at the Dirac point (DP), as well as the nonlocal voltage at a remote location in six-terminal bars where the direct and inverse SH effect operate at the same time. The "momentum-relaxing" dephasing reduces their values at the DP by two orders of magnitude while concurrently washing out any features away from the DP. Our theory is based on the Meir-Wingreen formula with dephasing introduced via phenomenological many-body self-energies, which is then linearized for multiterminal geometries to extract currents and voltages.

Integration, Verification and Layout of a Complex Multimedia SOC

We present our experience of designing a single-chip controller for advanced digital still camera from specification all the way to mass production. The process involves collaboration with camera system designer, IP vendors, EDA vendors, silicon wafer foundry, package and testing houses, and camera maker. We also co-work with academic research groups to develop a JPEG codec IP and memory BIST and SOC testing methodology. In this presentation, we cover the problems encountered, our solutions, and lessons learned.
