Internal and Super Symmetry in String Bit Models

We study in a general way the construction of string bit Hamiltonians which are supersymmetric, We construct several quadratic and quartic polynomials in string bit creation and annihilation operators ${\barϕ}^A_{a_1\cdots a_n}$, $ϕ^A_{a_1\cdots a_n}$,which commute with the supersymmetry generators $Q^a$. Among these operators are ones with the spinor tensor structure required to provide the lightcone worldsheet vertex insertion factors needed to give the correct interactions for the IIB superstring, whenever a closed string separates into two closed strings or two closed strings join into one.

Protostring Scattering Amplitudes

We calculate some tree level scattering amplitudes for a generalization of the protostring, which is a novel string model implied by the simplest string bit models. These bit models produce a lightcone worldsheet which supports $s$ integer moded Grassmann fields. In the generalization we supplement this Grassmann worldsheet system with $d=24-s$ transverse coordinate worldsheet fields. The protostring corresponds to $s=24$ and the bosonic string to $s=0$. The interaction vertex is a simple overlap with no operator insertions at the break/join point. Assuming that $s$ is even we calculate the multi-string scattering amplitudes by bosonizing the Grassmann fields, each pair equivalent to one compactified bosonic field, and applying Mandelstam's interacting string formalism to a system of $s/2$ compactified and $d$ uncompactified bosonic worldsheet fields. We obtain all amplitudes for open strings with no oscillator excitations and for closed strings with no oscillator excitations and zero winding number. We then study in detail some simple special cases. Multi-string processes with maximal helicity violation have much simplified amplitudes. We also specialize to general four string amplitudes and discuss their high energy behavior. Most of these models are not covariant under the full Lorentz group $O(d+1,1)$. The exceptions are the bosonic string whose Lorentz group is $O(25,1)$ and the protostring whose Lorentz group is $O(1,1)$. The models in between only enjoy an $O(1,1)\times O(d)$ spacetime symmetry.

1/N Perturbations in Superstring Bit Models

We develop the 1/N expansion for stable string bit models, focusing on a model with bit creation operators carrying only transverse spinor indices a=1,...,s. At leading order (1/N=0), this model produces a (discretized) lightcone string with a "transverse space' of $s$ Grassmann worldsheet fields. Higher orders in the 1/N expansion are shown to be determined by the overlap of a single large closed chain (discretized string) with two smaller closed chains. In the models studied here, the overlap is not accompanied with operator insertions at the break/join point. Then the requirement that the discretized overlap have a smooth continuum limit leads to the critical Grassmann "dimension" of s=24. This "protostring", a Grassmann analog of the bosonic string, is unusual, because it has no large transverse dimensions. It is a string moving in one space dimension and there are neither tachyons nor massless particles. The protostring, derived from our pure spinor string bit model, has 24 Grassmann dimensions, 16 of which could be bosonized to form 8 compactified bosonic dimensions, leaving 8 Grassmann dimensions--the worldsheet content of the superstring. If the transverse space of the protostring could be "decompactified", string bit models might provide an appealing and solid foundation for superstring theory.

Space from String Bits

We develop superstring bit models, in which the lightcone transverse coordinates in D spacetime dimensions are replaced with d=D-2 double-valued "flavor" indices $x^k-> f_k=1,2$; $k=2,...,d+1$. In such models the string bits have no space to move. Letting each string bit be an adjoint of a "color" group U(N), we then analyze the physics of 't Hooft's limit $N->\infty$, in which closed chains of many string bits behave like free lightcone IIB superstrings with d compact coordinate bosonic worldsheet fields $x^k$, and s pairs of Grassmann fermionic fields $θ_{L,R}^a$, a=1,..., s. The coordinates $x^k$ emerge because, on the long chains, flavor fluctuations enjoy the dynamics of d anisotropic Heisenberg spin chains. It is well-known that the low energy excitations of a many-spin Heisenberg chain are identical to those of a string worldsheet coordinate compactified on a circle of radius $R_k$, which is related to the anisotropy parameter $-1<Δ_k<1$ of the corresponding Heisenberg system. Furthermore there is a limit of this parameter, $Δ_k->\pm 1$, in which $R_k->\infty$. As noted in earlier work [Phys.Rev.D{\bf 89}(2014)105002], these multi-string-bit chains are strictly stable at $N=\infty$ when d<s and only marginally stable when d=s. (Poincare supersymmetry requires d=s=8, which is on the boundary between stability and instability.)

Stable String Bit Models

In string bit models, the superstring emerges as a very long chain of "bits", in which s fermionic degrees of freedom contribute positively to the ground state energy in a way to exactly cancel the destabilizing negative contributions of d=s bosonic degrees of freedom. We propose that the physics of string formation be studied nonperturbatively in the class of string bit models in which s>d, so that a long chain is stable, in contrast to the marginally stable (s=d=8) superstring chain. We focus on the simplest of these models with s=1 and d=0, in which the string bits live in zero space dimensions. The string bit creation operators are N X N matrices. We choose a Hamiltonian such that the large N limit produces string moving in one space dimension, with excitations corresponding to one Grassmann lightcone worldsheet field (s=1) and no bosonic worldsheet field (d=0). We study this model at finite N to assess the role of the large N limit in the emergence of the spatial dimension. Our results suggest that string-like states with large bit number M may not exist for N<(M-1)/2. If this is correct, one can have finite chains of string bits, but not continuous string, at finite N. Only for extremely large N can such chains behave approximately like continuous string, in which case there will also be the (approximate) emergence of a new spatial dimension. In string bit models designed to produce critical superstring at N=infinity, we can then expect only approximate Lorentz invariance at finite N, with violations of order 1/N^2.

6-Vertex Model on an Open String Worldsheet

We propose boundary conditions on a two dimensional 6-vertex model, which is defined on the lightcone lattice for an open string worldsheet. We show that, in the continuum limit, the degrees of freedom of this 6-vertex model describe a target space coordinate compactified on a circle of radius R, which is related to the vertex weights. This conclusion had already been established for the case of a 6-vertex model on the worldsheet lattice for the propagator of a closed string. This exercise illustrates how the Bethe ansatz works in the presence of boundaries, at least of this particular type.

Open String Self-energy on the Lightcone Worldsheet Lattice

We continue our study of open string perturbation theory on the lightcone worldsheet lattice, which is an $M\times N$ rectangular grid. Here $M$ is the number of $P^+$ units and $N$ is the number of $ix^+$ units. We extend our previous analysis to the bosonic open string one planar loop self-energy. We find that, when all open string coordinates satisfy Neumann conditions, the ultraviolet worldsheet divergences associated with the closed string tachyon and boundary effects can be cancelled by renormalization of bulk ($AM^1$) and boundary ($BM^0$) worldsheet "cosmological constants". The bulk divergence for the open string matches that for the closed string. The open string tachyon mass shift displays the dilaton logarithmic divergence with the correct coefficient for its consistent absorption by renormalization of the string tension. The ultraviolet contribution to the open string gluon mass shift vanishes, in accord with its interpretation as a gauge particle. We also find that when the bosonic string ends on a D-brane additional negative powers of $\ln M$ multiply the bulk and boundary divergences. These can no longer be cancelled by the "cosmological constants", perhaps pointing to the need, in the presence of D-branes, for the cancellations of divergences provided by supersymmetry.

Worldsheet Propagator on the Lightcone Worldsheet Lattice

We develop new more powerful techniques, based on an almost closed form for the lattice worldsheet propagator, for analyzing planar open string worldsheets defined on a lightcone lattice. We show that results obtained in earlier work are easily reproduced with far more precision. In particular, consistency checks which required numerical analysis in the earlier work can now be confirmed exactly.

Closed String Self-energy on the Lightcone Worldsheet Lattice

We study the one loop correction to the closed bosonic string propagator, including the possibile presence of D-branes, by discretizing the light cone worldsheet on an M times N rectangular lattice, with M proportional to P^+ and N+1 proportional to ix^+. The integrals over the moduli then become sums which we evaluate numerically. The main purpose of this study is to assess the reliability of the worldsheet lattice as a regulator of the divergences in string perturbation theory. There are two natural geometrical counterterms for the lightcone worldsheet, one proportional to the area of the worldsheet and the other proportional to the length of worldsheet boundaries, tracing the ends of open strings. We show that the divergences in the closed string self-energy can be cancelled by the area counterterm and a renormalization of the Regge slope parameter. The residual finite part is compatible with Lorentz invariance, provided a novel regularization, natural to the lightcone worldsheet lattice and described in this article, is employed.

Determinants for the Lightcone Worldsheet

The evaluation of the determinant of the Laplacian defined on two dimensional regions of various shapes is an essential ingredient in calculating the scattering amplitudes of strings. In lightcone parameterization the regions are rectangular in shape with several slits of different length and location cut parallel to the $τ$ axis of the rectangle. This paper offers a compendium of applications of the methods of Kac and McKean and Singer to the calculation of such worldsheet determinants. Particular attention is paid to the effect of corners on the determinants. The effect of corners joining edges with like boundary conditions is implicit in Kac's results. We discuss the generalization to a corner joining a Dirichlet edge to a Neumann edge, and apply it to a scattering amplitude involving D-branes.

Improved Proof of the No-ghost Theorem for Fermion States of the Superstring

The purpose of this note is to extend the improved proof of the no-ghost theorem for the bosonic and Neveu-Schwarz dual resonance models, presented in my article Nuclear Physics B286 (1987) 61, to cover the Ramond fermion string. As in that paper, the improvement involves the identification of an efficient basis for string state space and a self-contained proof, based on the super-Virasoro algebra, of the linear independence of the basis elements. We use our results to calculate the BRST cohomology for this system.

The Open String Regge Trajectory and Its Field Theory Limit

We study the properties of the leading Regge trajectory in open string theory including the open string planar one-loop corrections. With SU(N) Chan-Paton factors, the sum over planar open string multi-loop diagrams describes the 't Hooft limit N\to\infty. Our motivation is to improve the understanding of open string theory at finite α' as a model of gauge theories. SU(N) gauge theories in D space-time dimensions are described by requiring open strings to end on a stack of N Dp-branes of space-time dimension D=p+1. The large N leading trajectory α(t)=1+α' t+Σ(t) can be extracted, through order g^2, from the s\to-\infty limit, at fixed t, of the four open string tree and planar loop diagrams. We analyze the t\to0 behavior with the result that Σ(t)\sim-Cg^2(-α' t)^{(D-4)/2}/(D-4). This result precisely tracks the 1-loop Reggeized gluon of gauge theory in D>4 space-time dimensions. In particular, for D\to4 it reproduces the known infrared divergences of gauge theory in 4 dimensions with a Regge trajectory behaving as -\ln(-α^\prime t). We also study Σ(t) in the limit t\to-\infty and show that, when D<8, it behaves as α^\prime t/(\ln(-α^\prime t))^γ, where γ>0 depends on D and the number of massless scalars. Thus, as long as 4<D<8, the 1-loop correction stays small relative to the tree trajectory for the whole range -\infty<t<0. Finally we present the results of numerical calculations of Σ(t) for all negative t.

Digitizing the Neveu-Schwarz Model on the Lightcone Worldsheet

The purpose of this article is to extend the lightcone worldsheet lattice description of string theory to include the Neveu-Schwarz model. We model each component of the fermionic worldsheet field by a critical Ising model. We show that a simple choice of boundary conditions for the Ising variables leads to the half integer modes required by the model. We identify the G-parity operation within the Ising model and formulate the procedure for projecting onto the even G-parity sector. We construct the lattice version of the three open string vertex, with the necessary operator insertion at the interaction point. We sketch a formalism for summing planar open string multi-loop amplitudes, and we discuss prospects for numerically summing them. If successful, the methods described here could provide an alternative to lattice gauge theory for computations in large N QCD.

Resolution of Infrared Divergences in Gluon-Gluon Scattering Regulated on a Lightcone Worldsheet Lattice

We improve and update the discussion, given some years ago by my collaborators and me, of infrared divergences and Bremsstrahlung in one-loop gluon scattering probabilities in lightcone gauge. In that work, we showed that adding soft and collinear gluon radiation, satisfying simple Lorentz invariant constraints, not only cancelled all IR divergences, but resulted in compact expressions for the consequent scattering probabilities. Here we impose less restrictive (albeit noncovariant) constraints on the unobserved radiation, which increases the high energy (s) fixed momentum transfer (t) behavior of the total probabilities from -ln^2s to ln s ln t, a behavior shared by the (IR divergent) elastic probabilities. Using this new treatment we also make a much more detailed comparison of the lightcone results to covariant calculations using dimensional regularization, finding complete agreement between the two styles of calculation.

Subcritical String and Large N QCD

We pursue the possibility of using subcritical string theory in 4 space-time dimensions to establish a string dual for large N QCD. In particular we study the even G-parity sector of the 4 dimensional Neveu-Schwarz dual resonance model as the natural candidate for this string theory. Our point of view is that the open string dynamics given by this model will {\it determine} the appropriate subcritical closed string theory, a tree level background of which should describe the sum of planar multi-loop open string diagrams. We examine the one loop open string diagram, which contains information about the closed string spectrum at weak coupling. Higher loop open string diagrams will be needed to determine closed string interactions. We also analyze the field theory limit of the one loop open string diagram and recover the correct running coupling behavior of the limiting gauge theory.

The Fishnet as Anti-ferromagnetic Phase of Worldsheet Ising Spins

We identify the strong coupling fishnet diagram with a certain Ising spin configuration in the lightcone worldsheet description of planar TrΦ^3 field theory. Then, using a mean field formalism, we take the remaining planar diagrams into account in an average way. The fishnet spin configuration requires two mean fields ϕ,ϕ' where the fishnet diagram is the case ϕ=1,ϕ'=0. For general values of these fields, the system is then approximated as a light-cone quantized string with a field dependent effective string tension T_{eff}(ϕ,ϕ'). We also calculate the worldsheet energy density E(ϕ,ϕ'), and find the field values that minimize it in the presence of a transverse space infra-red cutoff ε>0. The criterion for string formation is that the tension in this minimum energy state remains non-zero as εgoes to 0. In the most simple-minded implementation of the mean field method, we find that the tension vanishes for weak and moderate coupling, but for very large coupling stays non-zero. A more elaborate treatment, taking temporal correlations into account, removes this ``phase transition'' and the string tension of the minimum energy state vanishes for all values of the coupling when εgoes to 0. Our mean field analysis thus suggests that the ``fishnet phase'' of TrΦ^3 theory is unstable, and there is no string formation for any value of the coupling. This is probably a reasonable outcome given the instability of the underlying theory.

A Mean Field Approximation to the Worldsheet Model of Planar phi^3 Field Theory

We develop an approximation scheme for our worldsheet model of the sum of planar diagrams based on mean field theory. At finite coupling the mean field equations show a weak coupling solution that resembles the perturbative diagrams and a strong coupling solution that seems to represent a tensionless soup of field quanta. With a certain amount of fine-tuning, we find a solution of the mean field equations that seems to support string formation.

An Improved Mean Field Approximation on the Worldsheet for Planar phi^3 Theory

We present an improved version of our earlier work on summing the planar graphs in phi^3 field theory. The present treatment is also based on our world sheet formalism and the mean field approximation, but it makes use of no further approximations. We derive a set of equations between the expectation values of the world sheet fields, and we investigate them in certain limits. We show that the equations can give rise to (metastable) string forming solutions.

BT Worldsheet for Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

We extend the Bardakci-Thorn (BT) worldsheet formalism to supersymmetric non-abelian gauge theory. Our method covers the cases of N =1,2,4 extended supersymmetry. This task requires the introduction of spinor valued Grassmann variables on the worldsheet analogous to those of the supersymmetric formulation of superstring theory. As in the pure Yang-Mills case, the worldsheet formalism automatically generates the correct quartic vertices from the cubic vertices. We also discuss coupling renormalization to one loop order.

Large N Matrix Mechanics on the Light-Cone

We report a simplification in the large N matrix mechanics of light-cone matrix field theories. The absence of pure creation or pure annihilation terms in the Hamiltonian formulation of these theories allows us to find their reduced large N Hamiltonians as explicit functions of the generators of the Cuntz algebra. This opens up a free-algebraic playground of new reduced models -- all of which exhibit new hidden conserved quantities at large N and all of whose eigenvalue problems are surprisingly simple. The basic tool we develop for the study of these models is the infinite dimensional algebra of all normal-ordered products of Cuntz operators, and this algebra also leads us to a special number-conserving subset of these models, each of which exhibits an infinite number of new hidden conserved quantities at large N.

A Worldsheet Description of Large N_c Quantum Field Theory

The N_c to infinity limit of a matrix quantum field theory is equivalent to summing only planar Feynman diagrams. The possibility of interpreting this sum as some kind world-sheet theory has been in the air ever since 't Hooft's original paper. We establish here just such a world sheet description for a scalar quantum field with interaction term g\Trϕ^3, and we indicate how the approach might be extended to more general field theories.

Gluon Chain Model of the Confining Force

We develop a picture of the QCD string as a chain of constituent gluons, bound by attractive nearest-neighbor forces which may be treated perturbatively. This picture accounts for both Casimir scaling at large N, and the asymptotic center dependence of the static quark potential. We discuss the relevance, to the gluon-chain picture, of recent three-loop results for the static quark potential. A variational framework is presented for computing the minimal energy and wavefunction of a long gluon chain, which enables us to derive both the logarithmic broadening of the QCD flux tube (``roughening''), and the existence of a Luscher -c/R term in the potential.

Bag Model for a Link in a Closed Gluonic Chain

The large $N_c$ limit of Yang-Mills gauge theory is the dynamics of a closed gluonic chain, but this fact does not obviate the inherently strong coupling nature of the dynamical problem. However, we suggest that a single link in such a chain might be reasonably described in the quasi-perturbative language of gluons and their interactions. To implement this idea, we use the MIT bag to model the physics of a nearest neighbor bond.

Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics for String-Bits

We develop possible versions of supersymmetric single particle quantum mechanics, with application to superstring-bit models in view. We focus principally on space dimensions $d=1,2,4,8$, the transverse dimensionalities of superstring in $3,4,6,10$ space-time dimensions. These are the cases for which ``classical'' superstring makes sense, and also the values of $d$ for which Hooke's force law is compatible with the simplest superparticle dynamics. The basic question we address is: When is it possible to replace such harmonic force laws with more general ones, including forces which vanish at large distances? This is an important question because forces between string-bits that do not fall off with distance will almost certainly destroy cluster decomposition. We show that the answer is affirmative for $d=1,2$, negative for $d=8$, and so far inconclusive for $d=4$.

String Bit Models for Superstring

We extend the model of string as a polymer of string bits to the case of superstring. We mainly concentrate on type II-B superstring, with some discussion of the obstacles presented by not II-B superstring, together with possible strategies for surmounting them. As with previous work on bosonic string we work within the light-cone gauge. The bit model possesses a good deal less symmetry than the continuous string theory. For one thing, the bit model is formulated as a Galilei invariant theory in $(D-2)+1$ dimensional space-time. This means that Poincaré invariance is reduced to the Galilei subgroup in $D-2$ space dimensions. Naturally the supersymmetry present in the bit model is likewise dramatically reduced. Continuous string can arise in the bit models with the formation of infinitely long polymers of string bits. Under the right circumstances (at the critical dimension) these polymers can behave as string moving in $D$ dimensional space-time enjoying the full $N=2$ Poincaré supersymmetric dynamics of type II-B superstring.

Super-Galilei Invariant Field Theories in 2+1 Dimensions

We extend the Galilei group of space-time transformations by gradation, construct interacting field-theoretic representations of this algebra, and show that non-relativistic Super-Chern-Simons theory is a special case. We also study the generalization to matrix valued fields, which are relevant to the formulation of superstring theory as a $1/N_c$ expansion of a field theory. We find that in the matrix case, the field theory is much more restricted by the supersymmetry.

Calculating the Rest Tension for a Polymer of String Bits

We explore the application of approximation schemes from many body physics, including the Hartree-Fock method and random phase approximation (RPA), to the problem of analyzing the low energy excitations of a polymer chain made up of bosonic string bits. We accordingly obtain an expression for the rest tension $T_0$ of the bosonic relativistic string in terms of the parameters characterizing the microscopic string bit dynamics. We first derive an exact connection between the string tension and a certain correlation function of the many-body string bit system. This connection is made for an arbitrary interaction potential between string bits and relies on an exact dipole sum rule. We then review an earlier calculation by Goldstone of the low energy excitations of a polymer chain using RPA. We assess the accuracy of the RPA by calculating the first order corrections. For this purpose we specialize to the unique scale invariant potential, namely an attractive delta function potential in two (transverse) dimensions. We find that the corrections are large, and discuss a method for summing the large terms. The corrections to this improved RPA are roughly 15\%.
