Scalar Field Theories On The World Sheet: A Non-Trivial Ground State

The present article completes an earlier publication, which was the culmination of a series of papers dedicated to the study of the planar graphs of the scalar phi^3 theory on a light cone world sheet. In the earlier work, a field theory on a continuous world sheet that reproduces these planar graphs was constructed, and the mean field approximation was applied to it. This led to the formation of a soliton, and the fluctuations around the soliton were identified with stringy excitations. We point out, however, that in this earlier work, a complete treatment of the ground state of the model was missing. This was due to an unnecessary decompactification of the world sheet; by keeping it compactified, we show that, in addition to a trivial ground state, there is also a non-trivial one. We investigate fluctuations around the non-trivial ground state in the limit of a densely populated world sheet, and show string formation in this limit. We also show that this limit can be systematically studied by means of an expansion in terms of a conveniently defined coupling constant.

Scalar Field Theories On The World Sheet: Cutoff Independent Treatment

Following earlier work on the same topic, we consider once more scalar field theories on the world sheet parametrized by the light cone coordinates. For most of the way, we use the same approach as in the previous work, but there is an important new development. To avoid the light cone singularity at p^{+}=0, one world sheet coordinate had to be discretized, introducing a cutoff into the model. In the earlier work, this cutoff could not be removed, making the model unreliable. In the present article, we show that, by a careful choice of the mass counter term, both the infrared singularity at p^{+}=0 and the ultraviolet mass divergences can be simultaneously eliminated. We therefore finally have a cutoff independent model on a continuously parametrized world sheet. We study this model in the mean field approximation, and as before, we find solitonic solutions. Quantizing the solitonic collective coordinates gives rise to a string like model. However, in contrast to the standard string model, the trajectories here are not in general linear but curved.

Field Theory On The World Sheet: Crystal Formation

In a previous work, a world sheet field theory which sums planar phi^3 graphs was investigated. In particular, a solitonic solution of this model was constructed, and quantum fluctuations around this solution led to a string picture. However, there were two problems which were not treated satisfactorily: An ultraviolet divergence and a spurious infrared divergence. Here we present an improved treatment, which eliminates the ultraviolet divergence in the normal fashion by mass and coupling constant renormalization. The infrared problem is taken care of by choosing a classical background which forms a one dimensional crystal. The resulting picture is a hybrid model with both string and underlying field theory excitations. Only in the dense graph limit on the world sheet a full string picture emerges.

Field Theory On The World Sheet: Improvements And Generalizations

This article is the continuation of a project of investigating planar phi^3 model in various dimensions. The idea is to reformulate them on the world sheet, and then to apply the classical (meanfield) approximation, with two goals: To show that the ground state of the model is a solitonic configuration on the world sheet, and the quantum fluctuations around the soliton lead to the formation of a transverse string. After a review of some of the earlier work, we introduce and discuss several generalizations and new results. In 1+2 dimensions, a rigorous upper bound on the solitonic energy is established. A phi^4 interaction is added to stabilize the original phi^3 model. In 1+3 and 1+5 dimensions, an improved treatment of the ultraviolet divergences is given. And significantly, we show that our approximation scheme can be imbedded into a systematic strong coupling expansion. Finally, the spectrum of quantum fluctuations around the soliton confirms earlier results: In 1+2 and 1+3 dimensions, a transverse string is formed on the world sheet.

More On The Connection Between Planar Field Theory And String Theory

We continue work on the connection between world sheet representation of the planar phi^3 theory and string formation. The present article, like the earlier work, is based on the existence of a solitonic solution on the world sheet, and on the zero mode fluctuations around this solution. The main advance made in this paper is the removal of the cutoff and the transition to the continuum limit on the world sheet. The result is an action for the modes whose energies remain finite in this limit (light modes). The expansion of this action about a dense background of graphs on the world sheet leads to the formation of a string.

Planar Graphs On The World Sheet: The Hamiltonian Approach

The present work continues the program of summing planar Feynman graphs on the world sheet. Although it is based on the same classical action introduced in the earlier work, there are important new features: Instead of the path integral used in the earlier work, the model is quantized using the canonical algebra and the Hamiltonian picture. The new approach has an important advantage over the old one: The ultraviolet divergence that plagued the earlier work is absent. Using a family of projection operators, we are able to give an exact representation on the world sheet of the planar graphs of both the phi^3 theory, on which most of the previous work was based, and also of the phi^4 theory. We then apply the mean field approximation to determine the structure of the ground state. In agreement with the earlier work, we find that the graphs of phi^3 theory form a dense network (condensate) on the world sheet. In the case of the phi^4 theory, graphs condense for the unphysical (attractive) sign of the coupling, whereas there is no condensation for the physical (repulsive) sign.

Further Results about Field Theory on the World Sheet and String Formation

The present article is the continuation of the earlier work, which used the world sheet representation and the mean field approximation to sum planar graphs in massless phi^3 field theory. We improve on the previous work in two respects: A prefactor in the world sheet propagator that had been neglected is now taken into account. In addition, we introduce a non-zero bare mass for the field phi. Working with a theory with cutoff, and using the mean field approximation, we find that, depending on the range of values of the mass and coupling constant, the model has two phases: A string forming phase and a perturbative field theory phase. We also find the generation of a new degree of freedom, which was not in the model originally. The new degree of freedom can be thought of as the string slope, which is now promoted into a fluctuating dynamical variable. Finally, we show that the introduction of the bare mass makes it possible to renormalize the model.

Meanfield Approximation For Field Theories On The Worldsheet Revisited

This work is the continuation of the earlier efforts to apply the mean field approximation to the world sheet formulation of planar phi^3 theory. The previous attempts were either simple but without solid foundation or well founded but excessively complicated. In this article, we present an approach both simple, and also systematic and well founded. We are able to carry through the leading order mean field calculation analytically, and with a suitable tuning of the coupling constant, we find string formation.

Self Consistent Field Method for Planar phi^3 Theory

We continue and extend earlier work on the summation of planar graphs in phi^3 field theory, based on a local action on the world sheet. The present work employs a somewhat different version of the self consistent field (meanfield) approximation compared to the previous work on the same subject. Using this new approach, we are able to determine in general the asymptotic forms of the solutions, and in the case of one solution, even its exact form. This solution leads to formation of an unstable string, in agreement with the previous work. We also investigate and clarify questions related to Lorentz invariance and the renormalization of the solution.

A Mean Field Approximation to the Worldsheet Model of Planar phi^3 Field Theory

We develop an approximation scheme for our worldsheet model of the sum of planar diagrams based on mean field theory. At finite coupling the mean field equations show a weak coupling solution that resembles the perturbative diagrams and a strong coupling solution that seems to represent a tensionless soup of field quanta. With a certain amount of fine-tuning, we find a solution of the mean field equations that seems to support string formation.

An Improved Mean Field Approximation on the Worldsheet for Planar phi^3 Theory

We present an improved version of our earlier work on summing the planar graphs in phi^3 field theory. The present treatment is also based on our world sheet formalism and the mean field approximation, but it makes use of no further approximations. We derive a set of equations between the expectation values of the world sheet fields, and we investigate them in certain limits. We show that the equations can give rise to (metastable) string forming solutions.

A Worldsheet Description of Large N_c Quantum Field Theory

The N_c to infinity limit of a matrix quantum field theory is equivalent to summing only planar Feynman diagrams. The possibility of interpreting this sum as some kind world-sheet theory has been in the air ever since 't Hooft's original paper. We establish here just such a world sheet description for a scalar quantum field with interaction term g\Trϕ^3, and we indicate how the approach might be extended to more general field theories.

Conformal Models of Thirring Type and the Affine Virasoro Construction

We investigate a class of models in 1+1 dimensions with four fermion interaction term. At each order of the perturbation expansion, the models are ultraviolet finite and Lorentz non-invariant. We show that for certain privileged values of the coupling constants, Lorentz symmetry is restored, and indeed the model turns out to be conformally invariant. This phenomenon is both quantum mechanical and non-perturbative.
