A quasi-dynamic one-equation model with joint constraints of kinetic energy and helicity fluxes for large eddy simulation of rotating turbulence

For settling the problem with rotating turbulence modelling, a quasi-dynamic one-equation subgrid-scale (SGS) model is proposed in this paper. Considering the key role of the joint cascade of kinetic energy and helicity in rotating turbulence, the new SGS model is constrained by the fluxes of kinetic energy and helicity. Specifically, the new theory of dual channels of helicity flux is taken into account. The modelling of the unclosed quantities is achieved by adopting a quasi-dynamic process that eliminates the need for test filtering compared to the classic dynamic process, and the model coefficients are dynamically obtained through the SGS kinetic energy transport equation and considering the joint constraints of kinetic energy and helicity fluxes. As a result, the model demonstrates a high correlation with DNS data in a priori tests. We refer to this new model as the quasi-dynamic joint-constraint model (QCM), which is introduced for both incompressible and compressible flows. To assess the effectiveness of the QCM, numerical experiments are conducted for three typical cases: incompressible streamwise rotating channel flow, transonic streamwise rotating annular pipe flow, and hypersonic transition flow at Mach 6 over a rotating cone. The results suggest that the QCM has the potential to significantly improve the prediction of rotational flows that are strongly influenced by helicity. Additionally, the new model demonstrates excellent capability in handling the transition process.

An MPI-OpenMP mixing parallel open source FW-H code for aeroacoustics calculation

In this paper, a permeable surface nondimensional FW-H (Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings) acoustics analogy post-processing code with convective effect and AoA (angle of attack) corrections, OpenCFD-FWH, has been eveloped. OpenCFD-FWH is now used as post processing code of our finite volume CFD solver OpenCFD-EC (Open Computational Fluid Dynamic code for Engineering Computation). However, OpenCFD-FWH can also be used by other CFD solvers with the specified data interface. The convective effect is taken into account by using Garrick Triangle to switch the wind tunnel casesoordinate system to a moving model with fluid at rest coordinate system, which simplifies the FW-H integration formulation and improves the computationalfficiency of the code. The AoA effect is also taken into account by coordinate transformation. In order to validate the code, three cases have been implemented. The first two cases are a monopole and aipole in a mean flow with AoA, and the results of the code and the analytical solution are practically identical. The third case is theell-known 30P30N configuration with a Reynolds number of 1.71$\times10^6$ and an AoA of $5.5^\circ$. OpenCFD-EC with IDDES (Improved Delayedetached-eddy simulation) is utilized to obtain the flow field, and the result shows relative good agreement when compared to JAXA experiments oreover, the code is implemented in a hybrid parallel way with MPI and OpenMP to speed up computing processes (up to 538.5 times faster in the0P30N validation case) and avoid an out-of-memory situation. The code is now freely available on \url{https://github.com/Z-K-LpenCFD-FWH}.

Dual channels of helicity cascade in turbulent flows

Helicity, as one of only two inviscid invariants in three-dimensional turbulence, plays an important role in the generation and evolution of turbulence. From the traditional viewpoint, there exists only one channel of helicity cascade similar to that of kinetic energy cascade. Through theoretical analysis, we find that there are two channels in helicity cascade process. The first channel mainly originates from vortex twisting process, and the second channel mainly originates from vortex stretching process. By analysing the data of direct numerical simulations of typical turbulent flows, we find that these two channels behave differently. The ensemble averages of helicity flux in different channels are equal in homogeneous and isotropic turbulence, while they are different in other type of turbulent flows. The second channel is more intermittent and acts more like a scalar, especially on small scales. Besides, we find a novel mechanism of hindered even inverse energy cascade, which could be attributed to the second-channel helicity flux with large amplitude.

A General Method for Large Eddy Simulation in Different Range of Turbulent Flows

Traditional large eddy simulation is based on Kolmogrov's hypothesis, and done in the inertial range. In inertial range the LES model coefficient is scale-invariant. In many cases, such as computing in the boundary layer, the filter scale is not in the inertial range, and the model coefficient changes drastically with the filter scale, thus the assumption of scale-invariance is not proper. In this paper, we propose a general principle of constraint, and then we deduce two concrete constraints based on the existing spectrum theory and priori data. The constrained dynamic Smogorinsky model can predict energy spectrum well in different range of forced and decayed turbulence. Dynamic mixed models with one of the constraints shows more efficient than some classical models in predicting energy spectrum and SGS dissipation, and also displays a strong correlation with the real stress in different range of the turbulent flows.

An improved helical subgrid-scale model and large-eddy simulation methods in helical turbulence

For helical isotropic turbulence, an improved two-term helical subgrid-scale (SGS) model is proposed and four types of dynamic methods are given to do large-eddy simulation (LES), which include the standard dynamic procedure, the least quatratic sum dynamic procedure, the dynamic procedure with single con- straint of helicity dissipation and the dynamic one with dual constraints of energy and helicity dissipation. Tested a priori and a posteriori in both steady and decaying helical isotropic turbulence, the four types of dynamic helical models and the dynamic Smogorinsky model are compared with results of direct numerical simulations (DNS) together. Numerical results demonstrate that the three new types of dynamic helical models predict energy and helicity evolution better than the standard dynamic helical model, and the two constrained helical models predict the energy and helicity dissipation rates better than other models. Fur- thermore, the constrained helical models have higher correlation to the real SGS stress and have more similar probability density functions (PDF) to the DNS results. In general, the two constrained helical models show some more attractive features than other models.

A new eddy-viscosity model for large eddy simulation in helical turbulence

In isotropic helical turbulence, a new single helical model is suggested for large eddy simulation. Based on the Kolmogrov's hypotheses, the helical model is proposed according to the balance of helicity dissipation and the average of helicity flux across the inertial range, and the helical model is a kind of eddy viscosity model. The coefficient of the helical model is constant and can be also determined dynamically. Numerical simulations of forced and decaying isotropic helical turbulence demonstrate that the helical model predicts the energy and helicity evolution well. The statistical character of the helical model is closer to the DNS results. In a priori test, the energy and helicity dissipations of the helical model also show a good results. In general, the helical model has the advantage contrast with the dynamic Smogorinsky and mixed models.
