Coexistence of extended and localized states in one-dimensional non-Hermitian Anderson model

In one-dimensional Hermitian tight-binding models, mobility edges separating extended and localized states can appear in the presence of properly engineered quasi-periodical potentials and coupling constants. On the other hand, mobility edges don't exist in a one-dimensional Anderson lattice since localization occurs whenever a diagonal disorder through random numbers is introduced. Here, we consider a nonreciprocal non-Hermitian lattice and show that the coexistence of extended and localized states appears with or without diagonal disorder in the topologically nontrivial region. We discuss that the mobility edges appear basically due to the boundary condition sensitivity of the nonreciprocal non-Hermitian lattice.

Exceptional Point Generated Robust Asymmetric High-Order Harmonics

We propose a metallic-silicon system with a complex optical potential modulated along the length of the waveguide for a robust higher harmonic generation. For right moving fields when the strength of non-Hermiticity becomes equal to the real part of the optical potential, the dynamical equations associated with modal field amplitudes in our proposed system are described by a Jordan form Hamiltonian. This ultimately will allow for a unidirectional higher frequency generation which always has a maximum value for a specific length of the waveguide irrespective of the geometrical imperfections in the design of the waveguide. Furthermore, the phase of the generated higher harmonic mode becomes independent of the coupling between the fundamental frequency and higher harmonic one. Unlike other proposed spatiotemporal modulated systems when the system has a Jordan form Hamiltonian, the fundamental mode remains reciprocal while the harmonic generation is non-reciprocal. Consequently, while the proposed device cannot be used as an optical isolator it can be used for many other devices such as laser cavities, interferometry, and holographic processes.

Observation of Robust Zero Energy Extended States

Topological edge states arise at the interface of two topologically-distinct structures and have two distinct features: they are localized and robust against symmetry protecting disorder. On the other hand, conventional transport in one dimension is associated with extended states, which typically do not have topological robustness. In this paper, using lossy coupled resonators in one dimension, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally the existence of robust states residing in the bulk. We show that they are unusually robust against disorders in coupling between adjacent sites and losses. Our work paves the way to a new form of robust transport that is not limited to boundary phenomena and can be accessed more easily from far field.

Eigenstate clustering around exceptional points

We propose an idea of eigenstate clustering in non-Hermitian systems. We show that non-orthogonal eigenstates can be clustered around exceptional points and illustrate our idea on some models. We discuss that exponential localization of eigenstates at edges due to the non-Hermitian skin effect is a typical example of eigenstate clustering. We numerically see that clustering of localized or extended eigenstates are possible in systems with both open and closed boundaries. We show that gain and loss can enhance eigenstate clustering. We use fidelities and the standard k-means clustering algorithm for a systematic study of clustered eigenstates.

Non-diffracting states at exceptional points

We propose to use exceptional points (EPs) to construct diffraction-free beam propagation and localized power oscillation in lattices. Specifically, here we propose two systems to utilize EPs for diffraction-free beam propagation, one in synthetic gauge lattices and the other one, in unidirectionally coupled resonators where each resonator individually is capable of creating orbital angular momentum beams (OAM). In the second system, we introduce the concept of robust and tunable OAM beam propagation in discrete lattices. We show that one can create robust OAM beams in an arbitrary number of sites of a photonic lattice. Furthermore, we report power oscillation at the EP of a non-Hermitian lattice. Our study widens the study and application of EPs in different photonic systems including the OAM beams and their associated dynamics in discrete lattices.

Robust localized zero-energy modes from locally embedded PT-symmetric defects

We demonstrate the creation of robust localized zero-energy states that are induced into topologically trivial systems by insertion of a PT-symmetric defect with local gain and loss. A pair of robust localized states induced by the defect turns into zero-energy modes when the gain-loss contrast exceeds a threshold, at which the defect states encounter an exceptional point. Our approach can be used to obtain robust lasing or perfectly absorbing modes in any part of the system.

Critical Trap Aspect Ratios For Dipolar BEC

We show that there exists critical trap aspect ratios for a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with dipole-dipole interactions. We discuss the role of critical trap aspect ratios on both the critical angular velocity above which a vortex is energetically favorable and the precession velocity of an off-axis vortex in TF regime. We show that the stability diagram for a purely dipolar gas depends crucially on the critical trap aspect ratios both for positive and negative strength of dipolar interaction. We prove that the critical points can be changed by an anharmonic potential.

Exact solution of the time-dependent harmonic plus an inverse harmonic potential with a time-dependent electromagnetic field

In this article, the problem of the charged harmonic plus an inverse harmonic oscillator with time-dependent mass and frequency in a time-dependent electromagnetic field is investigated. It is reduced to the problem of the inverse harmonic oscillator with time-independent parameters and the exact wave function is obtained.
