Spherical convex hull of random points on a wedge

Consider two half-spaces $H_1^+$ and $H_2^+$ in $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ whose bounding hyperplanes $H_1$ and $H_2$ are orthogonal and pass through the origin. The intersection $\mathbb{S}_{2,+}^d:=\mathbb{S}^d\cap H_1^+\cap H_2^+$ is a spherical convex subset of the $d$-dimensional unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^d$, which contains a great subsphere of dimension $d-2$ and is called a spherical wedge. Choose $n$ independent random points uniformly at random on $\mathbb{S}_{2,+}^d$ and consider the expected facet number of the spherical convex hull of these points. It is shown that, up to terms of lower order, this expectation grows like a constant multiple of $\log n$. A similar behaviour is obtained for the expected facet number of a homogeneous Poisson point process on $\mathbb{S}_{2,+}^d$. The result is compared to the corresponding behaviour of classical Euclidean random polytopes and of spherical random polytopes on a half-sphere.

On the geometry of projective tensor products

In this work, we study the volume ratio of the projective tensor products $\ell^n_p\otimes_π\ell_q^n\otimes_π\ell_r^n$ with $1\leq p\leq q \leq r \leq \infty$. We obtain asymptotic formulas that are sharp in almost all cases. As a consequence of our estimates, these spaces allow for a nearly Euclidean decomposition of Kashin type whenever $1\leq p \leq q\leq r \leq 2$ or $1\leq p \leq 2 \leq r \leq \infty$ and $q=2$. Also, from the Bourgain-Milman bound on the volume ratio of Banach spaces in terms of their cotype $2$ constant, we obtain information on the cotype of these $3$-fold projective tensor products. Our results naturally generalize to $k$-fold products $\ell_{p_1}^n\otimes_π\dots \otimes_π\ell_{p_k}^n$ with $k\in\mathbb N$ and $1\leq p_1 \leq \dots\leq p_k \leq \infty$.

Random polytopes and affine surface area

Let K be a convex body in $R^d$. A random polytope is the convex hull $[x_1,...,x_n]$ of finitely many points chosen at random in K. $\Bbb E(K,n)$ is the expectation of the volume of a random polytope of n randomly chosen points. I. Bárány showed that we have for convex bodies with $C^3$ boundary and everywhere positive curvature $$ c(d)\lim_{n \to \infty} \frac {vol_d(K)-\Bbb E(K,n)}{(\frac{vol_d(K)}{n})^{\frac{2}{d+1}}} =\int_{\partial K} κ(x)^{\frac{1}{d+1}}dμ(x) $$ where $κ(x)$ denotes the Gauß-Kronecker curvature. We show that the same formula holds for all convex bodies if $κ(x)$ denotes the generalized Gauß-Kronecker curvature.
