Convergence of spherical averages for actions of Fuchsian Groups

Pointwise convergence of spherical averages is proved for a measure-preserving action of a Fuchsian group. The proof is based on a new variant of the Bowen-Series symbolic coding for Fuchsian groups that, developing a method introduced by Wroten, simultaneously encodes all possible shortest paths representing a given group element. The resulting coding is self-inverse, giving a reversible Markov chain to which methods previously introduced by the first author for the case of free groups may be applied.

Primitive stability and the Bowditch conditions revisited

The equivalence of two conditions on the primitive elements in an $SL(2,\mathbb C)$ representation of the free group $F_2 = <a,b>$, namely Minsky's condition of primitive stability and the $BQ$-conditions introduced by Bowditch and generalised by Tan, Wong and Zhang, has been proved by Lee and Xu and independently by the author in arXiv:1901.01396. This note is a revised version of our original proof, which is greatly simplified by incorporating some of the ideas introduced by Lee and Xu, combined with the language of the Bowditch tree.

Top terms of polynomial traces in Kra's plumbing construction

Let $Σ$ be a surface of negative Euler characteristic together with a pants decomposition $¶$. Kra's plumbing construction endows $Σ$ with a projective structure as follows. Replace each pair of pants by a triply punctured sphere and glue, or `plumb', adjacent pants by gluing punctured disk neighbourhoods of the punctures. The gluing across the $i^{th}$ pants curve is defined by a complex parameter $τ_i \in \C$. The associated holonomy representation $ρ: π_1(Σ) \to PSL(2,\C)$ gives a projective structure on $Σ$ which depends holomorphically on the $τ_i$. In particular, the traces of all elements $ρ(γ), γ\in π_1(Σ)$, are polynomials in the $τ_i$. Generalising results proved in previous papers for the once and twice punctured torus respectively, we prove a formula giving a simple linear relationship between the coefficients of the top terms of $ρ(γ)$, as polynomials in the $τ_i$, and the Dehn-Thurston coordinates of $γ$ relative to $¶$. This will be applied elsewhere to give a formula for the asymptotic directions of pleating rays in the Maskit embedding of $Σ$ as the bending measure tends to zero.

The Maskit embedding of the twice punctured torus

The Maskit embedding M of a surface Σis the space of geometrically finite groups on the boundary of quasifuchsian space for which the `top' end is homeomorphic to Σ, while the `bottom' end consists of two triply punctured spheres, the remains of Σwhen two fixed disjoint curves have been pinched. As such representations vary in the character variety, the conformal structure on the top side varies over the Teichmüller space T(Σ). We investigate M when Σis a twice punctured torus, using the method of pleating rays. Fix a projective measure class [μ] supported on closed curves on Σ. The pleating ray P_[μ] consists of those groups in M for which the bending measure of the top component of the convex hull boundary of the associated 3-manifold is in [μ]. It is known that P is a real 1-submanifold of M. Our main result is a formula for the asymptotic direction of P in M as the bending measure tends to zero, in terms of natural parameters for the 2-complex dimensional representation space R and the Dehn-Thurston coordinates of the support curves to [μ] relative to the pinched curves on the bottom side. This leads to a method of locating M in R.

Limit points of lines of minima in Thurston's boundary of Teichmueller space

Given two measured laminations mu and nu in a hyperbolic surface which fill up the surface, Kerckhoff [Lines of Minima in Teichmueller space, Duke Math J. 65 (1992) 187-213] defines an associated line of minima along which convex combinations of the length functions of mu and nu are minimised. This is a line in Teichmueller space which can be thought as analogous to the geodesic in hyperbolic space determined by two points at infinity. We show that when mu is uniquely ergodic, this line converges to the projective lamination [mu], but that when mu is rational, the line converges not to [mu], but rather to the barycentre of the support of mu. Similar results on the behaviour of Teichmueller geodesics have been proved by Masur [Two boundaries of Teichmueller space, Duke Math. J. 49 (1982) 183-190].

The Riley slice revisited

In [4]: `The Riley slice of Schottky space', (Proc. London Math. Soc. 69 (1994), 72-90), Keen and Series analysed the theory of pleating coordinates in the context of the Riley slice of Schottky space R, the deformation space of a genus two handlebody generated by two parabolics. This theory aims to give a complete description of the deformation space of a holomorphic family of Kleinian groups in terms of the bending lamination of the convex hull boundary of the associated three manifold. In this note, we review the present status of the theory and discuss more carefully than in [4] the enumeration of the possible bending laminations for R, complicated in this case by the fact that the associated three manifold has compressible boundary. We correct two complementary errors in [4], which arose from subtleties of the enumeration, in particular showing that, contrary to the assertion made in [4], the pleating rays, namely the loci in R in which the projective measure class of the bending lamination is fixed, have two connected components.

Pleating coordinates for the Teichmüller space of a punctured torus

We construct new coordinates for the Teichmüller space Teich of a punctured torus into $\bold{R} \times\bold{R}^+$. The coordinates depend on the representation of Teich as a space of marked Kleinian groups $G_μ$ that depend holomorphically on a parameter $μ$ varying in a simply connected domain in $\bold{C}$. They describe the geometry of the hyperbolic manifold $\bold{H}^3/G_μ$; they reflect exactly the visual patterns one sees in the limit sets of the groups $G_μ$; and they are directly computable from the generators of $G_μ$.

Geometric finiteness and uniqueness for Kleinian groups with circle packing limit sets

In this paper, we assume that $G$ is a finitely generated torsion free non-elementary Kleinian group with $Ω(G)$ nonempty. We show that the maximal number of elements of $G$ that can be pinched is precisely the maximal number of rank 1 parabolic subgroups that any group isomorphic to $G$ may contain. A group with this largest number of rank 1 maximal parabolic subgroups is called {\it maximally parabolic}. We show such groups exist. We state our main theorems concisely here. Theorem I. The limit set of a maximally parabolic group is a circle packing; that is, every component of its regular set is a round disc. Theorem II. A maximally parabolic group is geometrically finite. Theorem III. A maximally parabolic pinched function group is determined up to conjugacy in $PSL(2,{\bf C})$ by its abstract isomorphism class and its parabolic elements.
