On some functionals involving torsional rigidity, principal eigenvalue and perimeter

In this paper we study some relationships between the first Dirichlet eigenvalue $Λ(Ω)$ and the torsional rigidity $T(Ω)$ of a domain $Ω$. We consider the problem of optimizing the product $Λ(Ω)T(Ω)$ among sets with prescribed perimeter, both in the class of open sets with finite perimeter and within the class of convex domains. We also present local results for the quantity $Λ(Ω)T(Ω)^q$, with $q>0$, under either a volume or a perimeter constraint.

A free boundary problem in thermal insulation with a prescribed heat source

We study the thermal insulation of a bounded body $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, under a prescribed heat source $f>0$, via a bulk layer of insulating material. We consider a model of heat transfer between the insulated body and the environment determined by convection; this corresponds to Robin boundary conditions on the free boundary of the layer. We show that a minimal configuration exists and that it satisfies uniform density estimates.

On the behaviour of the first eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian with Robin boundary conditions as $p$ goes to $1$

In this paper we study the $Γ$-limit, as $p\to 1$, of the functional $$ J_{p}(u)=\frac{\displaystyle\int_Ω|\nabla u|^p + β\int_{ \partial Ω} |u|^p}{\displaystyle \int_Ω|u|^p}, $$ where $Ω$ is a smooth bounded open set in $\mathbb R^{N}$, $p>1$ and $β$ is a real number. Among our results, for $β>-1$, we derive an isoperimetric inequality for \[ Λ(Ω,β)=\inf_{u \in BV(Ω), u\not \equiv 0} \frac{\displaystyle |Du|(Ω) + \min(β,1)\int_{ \partial Ω} |u|}{\displaystyle \int_Ω|u|} \] which is the limit as $p\to 1^{+}$ of $ λ(Ω,p,β)= \displaystyle \min_{u\in W^{1,p}(Ω)} J_{p}(u). $ We show that among all bounded and smooth open sets with given volume, the ball maximizes $Λ(Ω, β)$ when $β\in$ $(-1,0)$ and minimizes $Λ(Ω, β)$ when $β\in[0, \infty)$.

Shape optimization of a thermal insulation problem

We study a shape optimization problem involving a solid $K\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ that is maintained at constant temperature and is enveloped by a layer of insulating material $Ω$ which obeys a generalized boundary heat transfer law. We minimize the energy of such configurations among all $(K,Ω)$ with prescribed measure for $K$ and $Ω$, and no topological or geometrical constraints. In the convection case (corresponding to Robin boundary conditions on $\partialΩ$) we obtain a full description of minimizers, while for general heat transfer conditions, we prove the existence and regularity of solutions and give a partial description of minimizers.

An optimization problem in thermal insulation with Robin boundary conditions

We study thermal insulating of a bounded body $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$. Under a prescribed heat source $f\geq 0$, we consider a model of heat transfer between $Ω$ and the environment determined by convection; this corresponds, before insulation, to Robin boundary conditions. The body is then surrounded by a layer of insulating material of thickness of size $\varepsilon>0$, and whose conductivity is also proportional to $\varepsilon$. This corresponds to the case of a small amount of insulating material, with excellent insulating properties. We then compute the $Γ$-limit of the energy functional $F_\varepsilon$ and prove that this is a functional $F$ whose minimizers still satisfy an elliptic PDEs system with a non uniform Robin boundary condition depending on the distribution of insulating layer around $Ω$. In a second step we study the maximization of heat content (which measures the goodness of the insulation) among all the possible distributions of insulating material with fixed mass, and prove an optimal upper bound in terms of geometric properties. Eventually we prove a conjecture which states that the ball surrounded by a uniform distribution of insulating material maximizes the heat content.

Multiplicative controllability for nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations between sign-changing states

In this paper we study the global approximate multiplicative controllability for nonlinear degenerate parabolic Cauchy problems. In particular, we consider a one-dimensional semilinear degenerate reaction-diffusion equation in divergence form governed via the coefficient of the \-reaction term (bilinear or multiplicative control). The above one-dimensional equation is degenerate since the diffusion coefficient is positive on the interior of the spatial domain and vanishes at the boundary points. Furthermore, two different kinds of degenerate diffusion coefficient are distinguished and studied in this paper: the weakly degenerate case, that is, if the reciprocal of the diffusion coefficient is summable, and the strongly degenerate case, that is, if that reciprocal isn't summable. In our main result we show that the above systems can be steered from an initial continuous state that admits a finite number of points of sign change to a target state with the same number of changes of sign in the same order. Our method uses a recent technique introduced for uniformly parabolic equations employing the shifting of the points of sign change by making use of a finite sequence of initial-value pure diffusion pro\-blems. Our interest in degenerate reaction-diffusion equations is motivated by the study of some \-energy balance models in climatology (see, e.g., the Budyko-Sellers model) and some models in population genetics (see, e.g., the Fleming-Viot model).

Generalized elastica problems under area constraint

It was recently proved that the elastic energy $E(γ)=\tfrac{1}{2}\int_γκ^2 ds$ of a closed curve $γ$ with curvature $κ$ has a minimizer among all plane, simple, regular and closed curves of given enclosed area $A(γ)$, and that the minimum is attained only for circles. Here we show under which hypothesis the result can be extended to other functionals involving the curvature. As an example we show that the optimal shape remains a circle for the $p$-elastic energy $\int_γ|κ|^p ds$, whenever $p>1$.

Poincaré trace inequalities in $BV(\mathbb B^n)$ with nonstandard normalization

Extremal functions are exhibited in Poincaré trace inequalities for functions of bounded variation in the unit ball ${\mathbb B}^n$ of the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space ${\mathbb R}^n$. Trial functions are subject to either a vanishing mean value condition, or a vanishing median condition in the whole of ${\mathbb B}^n$, instead of just on $\partial {\mathbb B}^n$, as customary. The extremals in question take a different form, depending on the constraint imposed. In particular, under the latter constraint, unusually shaped extremal functions appear. A key step in our approach is a characterization of the sharp constant in the relevant trace inequalities in any admissible domain $Ω\subset {\mathbb R}^n$, in terms of an isoperimetric inequality for subsets of $Ω$.

Symmetry breaking for a problem in optimal insulation

We consider the problem of optimally insulating a given domain $Ω$ of ${\mathbb{R}}^d$; this amounts to solve a nonlinear variational problem, where the optimal thickness of the insulator is obtained as the boundary trace of the solution. We deal with two different criteria of optimization: the first one consists in the minimization of the total energy of the system, while the second one involves the first eigenvalue of the related differential operator. Surprisingly, the second optimization problem presents a symmetry breaking in the sense that for a ball the optimal thickness is nonsymmetric when the total amount of insulator is small enough. In the last section we discuss the shape optimization problem which is obtained letting $Ω$ to vary too.

On a conjectured reverse Faber-Krahn inequality for a Steklov-type Laplacian eigenvalue

For a given bounded Lipschitz set $Ω$, we consider a Steklov--type eigenvalue problem for the Laplacian operator whose solutions provide extremal functions for the compact embedding $H^1(Ω)\hookrightarrow L^2(\partial Ω)$. We prove that a conjectured reverse Faber--Krahn inequality holds true at least in the class of Lipschitz sets which are "close" to a ball in a Hausdorff metric sense. The result implies that among sets of prescribed measure, balls are local minimizers of the embedding constant.

On the first Dirichlet Laplacian eigenvalue of regular Polygons

The Faber-Krahn inequality in $\mathbb{R}^2$ states that among all open bounded sets of given area the disk minimizes the first Dirichlet Laplacian eigenvalue. There are numerical evidences that for all $N\ge 3$ the first Dirichlet Laplacian eigenvalue of the regular $N$-gon is greater than the one of the regular $(N+1)$-gon of same area. This natural property is also suggested by the fact that the shape of regular polygons becomes more and more "rounded" as $N$ increases and, among sets of given area, disk minimize the eigenvalue. Aiming to settle such a conjecture, in this work we investigate possible ways to estimate the difference between eigenvalues of regular $N$-gons and $(N+1)$-gons.

Characterization of ellipsoids through an overdetermined boundary value problem of Monge-Ampère type

The study of the optimal constant in an Hessian-type Sobolev inequality leads to a fully nonlinear boundary value problem, overdetermined with non standard boundary conditions. We show that all the solutions have ellipsoidal symmetry. In the proof we use the maximum principle applied to a suitable auxiliary function in conjunction with an entropy estimate from affine curvature flow.

An isoperimetric result for the fundamental frequency via domain derivative

The Faber-Krahn deficit $δλ$ of an open bounded set $Ω$ is the normalized gap between the values that the first Dirichlet Laplacian eigenvalue achieves on $Ω$ and on the ball having same measure as $Ω$. For any given family of open bounded sets of $\R^N$ ($N\ge 2$) smoothly converging to a ball, it is well known that both $δλ$ and the isoperimetric deficit $δP$ are vanishing quantities. It is known as well that, at least for convex sets, the ratio $\frac{δP}{δλ}$ is bounded by below by some positive constant (see \cite{BNT,PW}), and in this note, using the technique of the shape derivative, we provide the explicit optimal lower bound of such a ratio as $δP$ goes to zero.
