Behaviour of solutions to $p$-Laplacian with Robin boundary conditions as $p$ goes to $1$

We study the asymptotic behaviour, as $p\to 1^{+}$, of the solutions of the following inhomogeneous Robin boundary value problem: \begin{equation} \label{pbabstract} \tag{P} \left\{\begin{array}{ll} \displaystyle -Δ_p u_p = f & \text{in }Ω, \displaystyle |\nabla u_p|^{p-2}\nabla u_p\cdot ν+λ|u_p|^{p-2}u_p = g& \text{on } \partialΩ, \end{array}\right. \end{equation} where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb R^{N}$ with sufficiently smooth boundary, $ν$ is its unit outward normal vector and $Δ_p v$ is the $p$-Laplacian operator with $p>1$. The data $f\in L^{N,\infty}(Ω)$ (which denotes the Marcinkiewicz space) and $λ,g$ are bounded functions defined on $\partialΩ$ with $λ\ge0$. We find the threshold below which the family of $p$--solutions goes to 0 and above which this family blows up. As a second interest we deal with the $1$-Laplacian problem formally arising by taking $p\to 1^+$ in \eqref{pbabstract}.

On the behaviour of the first eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian with Robin boundary conditions as $p$ goes to $1$

In this paper we study the $Γ$-limit, as $p\to 1$, of the functional $$ J_{p}(u)=\frac{\displaystyle\int_Ω|\nabla u|^p + β\int_{ \partial Ω} |u|^p}{\displaystyle \int_Ω|u|^p}, $$ where $Ω$ is a smooth bounded open set in $\mathbb R^{N}$, $p>1$ and $β$ is a real number. Among our results, for $β>-1$, we derive an isoperimetric inequality for \[ Λ(Ω,β)=\inf_{u \in BV(Ω), u\not \equiv 0} \frac{\displaystyle |Du|(Ω) + \min(β,1)\int_{ \partial Ω} |u|}{\displaystyle \int_Ω|u|} \] which is the limit as $p\to 1^{+}$ of $ λ(Ω,p,β)= \displaystyle \min_{u\in W^{1,p}(Ω)} J_{p}(u). $ We show that among all bounded and smooth open sets with given volume, the ball maximizes $Λ(Ω, β)$ when $β\in$ $(-1,0)$ and minimizes $Λ(Ω, β)$ when $β\in[0, \infty)$.

An optimization problem in thermal insulation with Robin boundary conditions

We study thermal insulating of a bounded body $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$. Under a prescribed heat source $f\geq 0$, we consider a model of heat transfer between $Ω$ and the environment determined by convection; this corresponds, before insulation, to Robin boundary conditions. The body is then surrounded by a layer of insulating material of thickness of size $\varepsilon>0$, and whose conductivity is also proportional to $\varepsilon$. This corresponds to the case of a small amount of insulating material, with excellent insulating properties. We then compute the $Γ$-limit of the energy functional $F_\varepsilon$ and prove that this is a functional $F$ whose minimizers still satisfy an elliptic PDEs system with a non uniform Robin boundary condition depending on the distribution of insulating layer around $Ω$. In a second step we study the maximization of heat content (which measures the goodness of the insulation) among all the possible distributions of insulating material with fixed mass, and prove an optimal upper bound in terms of geometric properties. Eventually we prove a conjecture which states that the ball surrounded by a uniform distribution of insulating material maximizes the heat content.

Blow-up solutions for some nonlinear elliptic equations involving a Finsler-Laplacian

In this paper we prove existence results and asymptotic behavior for strong solutions $u\in W^{2,2}_{\textrm{loc}}(Ω)$ of the nonlinear elliptic problem \begin{equation} \tag{P} \label{abstr} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} -Δ_{H}u+H(\nabla u)^{q}+λu=f&\text{in }Ω,\\ u\rightarrow +\infty &\text{on }\partialΩ, \end{array} \right. \end{equation} where $H$ is a suitable norm of $\mathbb R^{n}$, $Ω$ is a bounded domain, $Δ_{H}$ is the Finsler Laplacian, $1<q\le 2$, $λ>0$ and $f$ is a suitable function in $L^{\infty}_{\textrm{loc}}$. Furthermore, we are interested in the behavior of the solutions when $λ\rightarrow 0^{+}$, studying the so-called ergodic problem associated to \eqref{abstr}. A key role in order to study the ergodic problem will be played by local gradient estimates for \eqref{abstr}.

Optimizing the first eigenvalue of some quasilinear operators with respect to the boundary conditions

We consider a class of quasilinear operators on a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb R^n$ and address the question of optimizing the first eigenvalue with respect to the boundary conditions, which are of the Robin-type. We describe the optimizing boundary conditions and establish upper and lower bounds on the respective maximal and minimal eigenvalue.

Sharp estimates and existence for anisotropic elliptic problems with general growth in the gradient

In this paper, we prove sharp estimates and existence results for anisotropic nonlinear elliptic problems with lower order terms depending on the gradient. Our prototype is: $ \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} -\mathcal Q_{p}u =[H(Du)]^{q}+f(x) &\text{in }Ω,\\ u=0&\text{on }\partialΩ. \end{array} \right. $ Here $Ω$ is a bounded open set of $\mathbb R^{N}$, $N\ge 2$, $0<p-1<q\le p<N$, and $\mathcal Q_{p}$ is the anisotropic operator $ \mathcal Q_{p} u ={\rm div}\left( [H(Du)]^{p-1}H_ξ(Du) \right)$, where $H$ is a suitable norm of $\mathbb R^{N}$. Moreover, $f$ belongs to an appropriate Marcinkiewicz space.

Some remarks on a shape optimization problem

Given $Ω$ bounded open set of $\mathbb R^{n}$ and $α\in \mathbb R$, let us consider \[ μ(Ω,α)=\min_{\substack{v\in W_{0}^{1,2}(Ω)\\v\not\equiv 0}} \frac{\displaystyle\int_Ω |\nabla v|^{2}dx+α\left|\displaystyle\int_Ω|v|v\,dx \right|}{\displaystyle\int_Ω |v|^{2}dx}. \] We study some properties of $μ(Ω,α)$ and of its minimizers, and, depending on $α$, we determine the set $Ω_α$ among those of fixed measure such that $μ(Ω_α,α)$ is the smallest possible.
