Dimensionality of the superconductivity in the transition metal pnictide WP

We report theoretical and experimental results on the transition metal pnictide WP. The theoretical outcomes based on tight-binding calculations and density functional theory indicate that WP is a three-dimensional superconductor with an anisotropic electronic structure and nonsymmorphic symmetries. On the other hand, magnetoresistance experimental data and the analysis of superconducting fluctuations of the conductivity in external magnetic field indicate a weakly anisotropic three-dimensional superconducting phase.

Limited ferromagnetic interactions in monolayers of MPS$_3$ (M=Mn, Ni)

We present a systematic study of the electronic and magnetic properties of two-dimensional ordered alloys, consisting of two representative hosts (MnPS$_3$ and NiPS$_3$) of transition metal phosphorus trichalcogenides doped with $3d$ elements. For both hosts our DFT+U calculations are able to qualitatively reproduce the ratios and signs of all experimentally observed magnetic couplings. The relative strength of all antiferromagnetic exchange couplings, both in MnPS$_3$ as well as in NiPS$_3$, can successfully be explained using an effective direct exchange model: they reveal that the third-neighbor exchange dominates in NiPS$_3$ due to the filling of the $t_{2g}$ subshell, whereas for MnPS$_3$ the first neighbor exchange is prevailed owing to the presence of the $t_{2g}$ magnetism. On the other hand, the nearest neighbor ferromagnetic coupling in NiPS$_3$ can only be explained using a more complex superexchange model and is (also) largely triggered by the absence of the $t_{2g}$ magnetism. For the doped systems, the DFT+U calculations revealed that magnetic impurities do not affect the magnetic ordering observed in the pure phases and thus in general in these systems ferromagnetism may not be easily induced by such a kind of elemental doping. However, unlike for the hosts, the first and second (dopant-host) exchange couplings are of similar order of magnitude. This leads to frustration in case of antiferromagnetic coupling and may be one of the reasons of the observed lower magnetic ordering temperature of the doped systems.

Spin and charge transport in ferromagnet-superconductor-ferromagnet heterostructures: Stoner versus spin mass mismatch mechanism

We study transport phenomena through a ballistic ferromagnet-superconductor-ferromagnet (F/S/F) junction, comparing the case in which the ferromagnetic order in the two F layers is of the standard Stoner type with the case where it is driven by a spin mass mismatch (SMM). It is shown that the two mechanisms lead to a different behavior in the charge and the spin conductances, especially when compared to the corresponding non-superconducting ferromagnet-normal-ferromagnet (F/N/F) junctions. In particular, when the injected current is perpendicular to the barrier, for high barrier transparency and large magnetization of the F layers, the large mass mismatch gives rise to an enhancement of both low-bias charge and spin conductances of the F/S/F junction, which is not observed in the equal-mass case. When all the allowed injection directions are considered, the low bias enhancement of the charge conductance for SMM leads still holds for high barrier transparency and large magnetization of the F layers. However, in the case of non-transparent interfaces, spin transport with SMM ferromagnets exhibits an opposite sign response with respect to the Stoner case at high biases for all magnetization values, also manifesting a significant amplification induced by superconductivity at the gap edge. The above mentioned differences can be exploited to probe the nature of the electronic mechanism underlying the establishment of the ferromagnetic order in a given material.

Double-helix magnetic order in CrAs with Pnma space group

The transition metal pnictide CrAs exhibits superconductivity in the vicinity of a helimagnetic phase, where it has been found that the propagation vector is parallel to the c axis and the magnetic moments lie in the ab plane. Here we use ab initio calculations to study the magnetic interactions in the material. Mapping onto a Heisenberg Hamiltonian, we calculate the magnetic exchanges by using LDA+U calculations and we unveil the origin of the magnetic frustration. Finally, we reproduce the double helix magnetic order with a propagation vector Q = (0, 0, 0.456) and we obtain the magnetic transition temperature TN through Monte-Carlo simulations of the specific heat. Due to the limitations of the use of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian for itinerant magnetic systems, the theoretical TN underestimated the experimental value of the pure CrAs. However, our results are in good agreement with those found for the alloy CrAs0.5Sb0.5 belonging to the same space group, showing that our result can describe this material class.

Magnetic instabilities in quasi-one-dimensional Cr-based material

The magnetic response of a K2Cr3As3 sample has been studied by means of dc magnetization measurements as a function of magnetic field (H) at different temperatures ranging from 5 K up to 300 K. Looking at the magnetic hysteresis loops m(H), a diamagnetic behavior of the sample has been inferred at temperatures higher than 60 K, whereas at lower temperatures the sample shows a hysteresis loop compatible with the presence of ferrimagnetism. Moreover, several spike-like magnetization jumps, both positive and negative, have been observed at certain fields in the range -1000 Oe < H < 1000 Oe, regardless of the temperature considered. The field position of the magnetization jumps has been studied at different temperatures, and their distribution can be described by a Lorentzian curve.

A minimal tight-binding model for the quasi-one-dimensional superconductor K2Cr3As3

We present a systematic derivation of a minimal five-band tight-binding model for the description of the electronic structure of the recently discovered quasi one-dimensional superconductor K2Cr3As3. Taking as a reference the density-functional theory (DFT) calculation, we use the outcome of a Lowdin procedure to refine a Wannier projection and fully exploit the predominant weight at the Fermi level of the states having the same symmetry of the crystal structure. Such states are described in terms of five atomic-like d orbitals: four planar orbitals, two dxy and two dx2-y2, and a single out-of-plane one, dz2 . We show that this minimal model reproduces with great accuracy the DFT band structure in a broad energy window around the Fermi energy. Moreover, we derive an explicit simplified analytical expression of such model, which includes three nearest-neighbor hopping terms along the z direction and one nearest-neighbor term within the xy plane. This model captures very efficiently the energy spectrum of the system and, consequently, can be used to study transport properties, superconductivity and dynamical effects in this novel class of superconductors.

Tuning Crystal Field Potential by Orbital Dilution in $d^4$ Oxides

We investigate the interplay between Coulomb driven orbital order and octahedral distortions in strongly correlated Mott insulators due to orbital dilution, i.e., doping by metal ions without an orbital degree of freedom. In particular, we focus on layered transition metal oxides and study the effective spin-orbital exchange due to $d^3$ substitution at $d^4$ sites. The structure of the $d^3-d^4$ spin-orbital coupling between the impurity and the host in the presence of octahedral rotations favors a distinct type of orbital polarization pointing towards the impurity and outside the impurity--host plane. This yields an effective lattice potential that generally competes with that associated with flat octahedra and, in turn, can drive an inversion of the crystal field interaction.

Optimizing the tight-binding parametrization of the quasi-one-dimensional superconductor K2Cr3As3

We study the tight-binding dispersion of the recently discovered superconductor K2Cr3As3, obtained from Wannier projection of Density Functional Theory (DFT) results. In order to establish quantitatively the actual degree of quasi-one dimensionality of this compound, we analyze the electronic band structure for two reduced sets of hopping parameters: one restricted to the Cr-As tubes and another one retaining a minimal number of in-plane hoppings. The corresponding total and local density of states of the compound are also computed with the aim of assessing the tight-binding results with respect to the DFT ones. We find a quite good agreement with the DFT results for the more extended set of hopping parameters, especially for what concerns the orbitals that dominate at the Fermi level. Accordingly, we conclude that one cannot avoid taking into account in-plane hoppings up to the next-nearest-neighbors cells even only to describe correctly the Fermi surface cuts and the populations along the kz direction. Such a choice of a minimal number of hopping parameters directly reflects in the possibility of correctly describing correlations and magnetic interactions.

Control of magnetism in singlet-triplet superconducting heterostructures

We analyze the magnetization at the interface between singlet and triplet superconductors and show that its direction and dependence on the phase difference across the junction are strongly tied to the structure of the triplet order parameter as well as to the pairing interactions. We consider equal spin helical, opposite spin chiral, and mixed symmetry pairing on the triplet side and show that the magnetization vanishes at $ϕ=0$ only in the first case, follows approximately a $\cosϕ$ behavior for the second, and shows higher harmonics for the last configuration. We trace the origin of the magnetization to the magnetic structure of the Andreev bound states near the interface, and provide a symmetry-based explanation of the results. Our findings can be used to control the magnetization in superconducting heterostructures and to test symmetries of spin-triplet superconductors.

Magnetic Intragap States and Mixed Parity Pairing at the Edge of Spin-Triplet Superconductors

We show that a spontaneous magnetic moment may appear at the edge of a spin-triplet superconductor if the system allows for pairing in a subdominant channel. To unveil the microscopic mechanism behind such effect we combine numerical solution of the Bogoliubov-De Gennes equations for a tight-binding model with nearest-neighbor attraction, and the symmetry based Ginzburg-Landau approach. We find that a potential barrier modulating the electronic density near the edge of the system leads to a non-unitary superconducting state close to the boundary where spin-singlet pairing coexists with the dominant triplet superconducting order. We demonstrate that the spin polarization at the edge appears due to the inhomogeneity of the non-unitary state and originates in the lifting of the spin-degeneracy of the Andreev bound-states.

Spin-orbital coupling in a triplet superconductor-ferromagnet junction

We study a novel type of coupling between spin and orbital degrees of freedom which appears at triplet superconductor-ferromagnet interfaces. Using a self-consistent spatially-dependent mean-field theory, we show that increasing the angle between the ferromagnetic moment and the triplet vector order parameter enhances or suppresses the p-wave gap close to the interface, according as the gap antinodes are parallel or perpendicular to the boundary, respectively. The associated change in condensation energy establishes an orbitally-dependent preferred orientation for the magnetization. When both gap components are present, as in a chiral superconductor, we observe a first-order transition between different moment orientations as a function of the exchange field strength.

Structural and electronic properties of Sr2RuO4-Sr3Ru2O7 heterostructure

By means of first-principles calculations we study the structural and electronic properties of a superlattice made of Sr2RuO4 and Sr3Ru2O7 ruthenate oxides. Due to the symmetry mismatch of the two systems a significant structural rearrangement occurs within the superlattice. We find that at the interface the RuO6 octahedra get elongated for the Sr2RuO4 while tend to be compressed for the Sr3Ru2O7 as compared to inner layers and the bulk phases. The positions of the Sr-atoms in the Sr-O layers at the interface are strongly modified and influence the alignment of the Ru atoms with respect to the planar oxygens as well as the Ru-O-Ru in-plane bond angles. Such structural rearrangement leads to a modification of the electronic structure close to the Fermi level. The main changes occurring at the interface and in the inner layers of the heterostructure are analyzed and compared with the bulk phases of the Sr2RuO4 and Sr3Ru2O7 compounds. We show that the positions of the peaks in the density of states close to the Fermi levels get shifted and renormalized in the spectral weight. The balance between the renormalization of the bandwidth of the dxy band and that of the crystal field splitting results into a minor change of the Van Hove singularities position within the superlattice. The effective tight-binding parameters for the 4d Ru bands are determined by means of a maximally localized Wannier functions approach and used to discuss the modification of the electronic structure of the superlattice with respect to the bulk phases. Consequences on the modification of the superconducting and metamagnetic behaviour of the superlattice with respect to the bulk phases are discussed.

The Hubbard model with spin orbit coupling: a lattice gauge theory approach

We study the symmetry properties of the Hubbard model with spin-orbit interactions of Rashba and Dresselhaus type. These interactions break the rotational symmetry in spin space, so that the magnetic order cannot be excluded by using the Bogoliubov inequality method. Nevertheless, we rigorously show that the existence of the magnetic long-range orders may be ruled out when the Rashba and Dresselhaus coupling constants are equal in modulus, whereas the eta-pairing can be always ruled out, regardless of the microscopic parameters of the model. These results are obtained by imposing locally the SU(2) gauge symmetry on the lattice, and rewriting the spin-orbit interactions in such a way that they are included in the path ordered of the gauge field on lattice.

Charge and spin transport through a ferromagnet/insulator/unconventional superconductor junction

We analyze the charge and spin transport through a ballistic ferromagnet/insulator/superconductor junction by means of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. For the ferromagnetic side we assume that ferromagnetism may be driven by an unequal mass renormalization of oppositely polarized carriers, i.e. a spin bandwidth asymmetry, and/or by a rigid splitting of up-and down-spin electron bands, as in a standard Stoner ferromagnet, whereas the superconducting side is assumed to exhibit a d-wave symmetry of the order parameter, which can be pure or accompanied by a minority component breaking time-reversal symmetry. Several remarkable features in the charge conductance arise in this kind of junction, providing useful information about the mechanism of ferromagnetism in the ferromagnetic electrode, as well as of the order parameter symmetry in the superconducting one. In particular, we show that when a time-reversal symmetry breaking superconductor is considered, the use of the two kinds of ferromagnet mentioned above represents a valuable tool to discriminate between the different superconducting mixed states. We also explain how this junction may mimic a switch able to turn on and off a spin current, leaving the charge conductance unchanged, and we show that for a wide range of insulating barrier strengths, a spin bandwidth asymmetry ferromagnet may support a spin current larger than a standard Stoner one.

Does a ferromagnet with spin-dependent masses produce a spin-filtering effect in a ferromagnetic/insulator/superconductor junction?

We analyze charge transport through a ballistic ferromagnet/insulator/superconductor junction by means of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We take into account the possibility that ferromagnetism in the first electrode may be driven by a mass renormalization of oppositely polarized carriers, i.e. by a spin bandwidth asymmetry, rather than by a rigid splitting of up-and down-spin electron bands as in a standard Stoner ferromagnet. By evaluating the averaged charge conductance for both an s- and a $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave order parameter for the S side, we show that the mass mismatch in the ferromagnetic electrode may mimic a spin active barrier. Indeed, in the $s$-wave case we show that under suitable conditions the spin dependent conductance of minority carriers below the energy gap $Δ_0$ can be larger than for majority carriers, and lower above $Δ_0$. On the other hand, for a d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductor similar spin-dependent effects give rise to an asymmetric peak splitting in the conductance. These results suggest that the junction may work as a spin-filtering device.

Josephson effect in S/F/S junctions: spin bandwidth asymmetry vs. Stoner exchange

We analyze the dc Josephson effect in a ballistic superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor junction by means of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations in the quasiclassical Andreev approximation. We consider the possibility of ferromagnetism originating from a mass renormalization of carriers of opposite spin, i.e. a spin bandwidth asymmetry. We provide a general formula for Andreev levels which is valid for arbitrary interface transparency, exchange interaction, and bandwidth asymmetry. We analyze the current-phase relation, the critical current, and the free energy in the short junction regime. We demonstrate that a larger number of $0-π$ transitions caused by a change in junction width or polarization magnitude is expected when ferromagnetism is driven by spin bandwidth asymmetry compared to Stoner magnetism, and that the same mechanism is likely responsible for the flowing of a larger critical current. We compare the phase diagrams of two identical junctions differing only in the mechanism by which the mid layer becomes magnetic, i.e. Stoner magnetism or bandwidth asymmetry. In particular, we point out that for these two cases, the phase difference across the junction in the ground state need not be the same, even if the polarizations are equal.

Odd-frequency triplet pairing in mixed-parity superconductors

We show that mixed-parity superconductors may exhibit equal-spin pair correlations that are odd-in-time and can be tuned by means of an applied field. The direction and the amplitude of the pair correlator in the spin space turn out to be strongly dependent on the symmetry of the order parameter, and thus provide a tool to identify different types of singlet-triplet mixed configurations. We find that odd-in-time spin-polarized pair correlations can be generated without magnetic inhomogeneities in superconducting/ferromagnetic hybrids when parity mixing is induced at the interface.

Spin-sensitive Long-ranged Proximity Effect for Triplet Superconductors

The discovery of noncentrosymmetric superconductors, such as CePt$_3$Si, and chiral superconductors, such as Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, calls for experimental methods to identify the presence of spin-triplet pairing. We here demonstrate a method which accomplishes this in an appealingly simple manner: a spin-sensitive proximity effect in a ferromagnet$\mid$triplet superconductor bilayer. It is shown how the orientation of the field can be used to unambiguously distinguish between different spin-triplet states. Moreover, the proximity effect becomes long-ranged in spite of the presence of an exchange field and even without any magnetic inhomogeneities, in contrast to conventional S$\mid$F junctions. Our results can be verified by STM-spectroscopy and could be useful as a tool to characterize the pairing state in unconventional superconducting materials.

Distance-depending electron-phonon interactions

For a dimer with a non-degenerate orbital built from atomic wave functions of Gaussian shape we evaluate all the electron-phonon couplings derived from the one-body and two-body electronic interactions, considering both the adiabatic and extreme non-adiabatic limit. Not only the values of the coupling parameters in the two limits, but also the expressions of the corresponding terms in the Hamiltonian differ. Depending on the distance between the dimer ions, some of the two-body couplings are comparable, or even larger than the one-body ones.
