Dissipative quantum dynamics, phase transitions and non-Hermitian random matrices

We explore the connections between dissipative quantum phase transitions and non-Hermitian random matrix theory. For this, we work in the framework of the dissipative Dicke model which is archetypal of symmetry-breaking phase transitions in open quantum systems. We establish that the Liouvillian describing the quantum dynamics exhibits distinct spectral features of integrable and chaotic character on the two sides of the critical point. We follow the distribution of the spacings of the complex Liouvillian eigenvalues across the critical point. In the normal and superradiant phases, the distributions are $2D$ Poisson and that of the Ginibre Unitary random matrix ensemble, respectively. Our results are corroborated by computing a recently introduced complex-plane generalization of the consecutive level-spacing ratio distribution. Our approach can be readily adapted for classifying the nature of quantum dynamics across dissipative critical points in other open quantum systems.

Landau Theory for Non-Equilibrium Steady States

We examine how systems in non-equilibrium steady states close to a continuous phase transition can still be described by a Landau potential if one forgoes the assumption of analyticity. In a system simultaneously coupled to several baths at different temperatures, the non-analytic potential arises from the different density of states of the baths. In periodically driven-dissipative systems, the role of multiple baths is played by a single bath transferring energy at different harmonics of the driving frequency. The mean-field critical exponents become dependent on the low-energy features of the two most singular baths. We propose an extension beyond mean field.

Band-edge superconductivity

We show that superconductivity can arise in semiconductors with a band in the shape of a Mexican hat when the chemical potential is tuned close to the band edge, but not intersecting the band, as long as interactions are sufficiently strong. Hence, this is an example where superconductivity can emerge from a band insulator when interactions exceed a threshold. Semiconductors with simple cubic symmetry point groups and with strong spin-orbit coupling provide an example of a system with such band dispersion.

Dynamical symmetries of Markov processes with multiplicative white noise

We analyse various properties of stochastic Markov processes with multiplicative white noise. We take a single-variable problem as a simple example, and we later extend the analysis to the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation for the stochastic dynamics of a magnetic moment. In particular, we focus on the non-equilibrium transfer of angular momentum to the magnetization from a spin-polarised current of electrons, a technique which is widely used in the context of spintronics to manipulate magnetic moments. We unveil two hidden dynamical symmetries of the generating functionals of these Markovian multiplicative white-noise processes. One symmetry only holds in equilibrium and we use it to prove generic relations such as the fluctuation-dissipation theorems. Out of equilibrium, we take profit of the symmetry-breaking terms to prove fluctuation theorems. The other symmetry yields strong dynamical relations between correlation and response functions which can notably simplify the numerical analysis of these problems. Our construction allows us to clarify some misconceptions on multiplicative white-noise stochastic processes that can be found in the literature. In particular, we show that a first-order differential equation with multiplicative white noise can be transformed into an additive-noise equation, but that the latter keeps a non-trivial memory of the discretisation prescription used to define the former.

Photon-mediated interactions: a scalable tool to create and sustain entangled states of N atoms

We propose and study the use of photon-mediated interactions for the generation of long-range steady-state entanglement between N atoms. Through the judicious use of coherent drives and the placement of the atoms in a network of Cavity QED systems, a balance between their unitary and dissipative dynamics can be precisely engineered to stabilize a long-range correlated state of qubits in the steady state. We discuss the general theory behind such a scheme, and present an example of how it can be used to drive a register of N atoms to a generalized W state and how the entanglement can be sustained indefinitely. The achievable steady-state fidelities for entanglement and its scaling with the number of qubits are discussed for presently existing superconducting quantum circuits. While the protocol is primarily discussed for a superconducting circuit architecture, it is ideally realized in any Cavity QED platform that permits controllable delivery of coherent electromagnetic radiation to specified locations.

Purification and switching protocols for dissipatively stabilized entangled qubit states

Pure dephasing processes limit the fidelities achievable in driven-dissipative schemes for stabilization of entangled states of qubits. We propose a scheme which, combined with already existing entangling methods, purifies the desired entangled state by driving out of equilibrium auxiliary dissipative cavity modes coupled to the qubits. We lay out the specifics of our scheme and compute its efficiency in the particular context of two superconducting qubits in a cavity-QED architecture, where the strongly coupled auxiliary modes provided by collective cavity excitations can drive and sustain the qubits in maximally entangled Bell states with fidelities reaching 90% for experimentally accessible parameters.

Analytic theory of Hund's metals: a renormalization group perspective

We study the emergence of quasiparticles in Hund's metals with an SU($M$)$\times$SU($N$)-symmetric Kondo impurity model carrying both spin and orbital degrees of freedom. We show that the coupling of the impurity spin to the conduction electrons can be \emph{ferromagnetic}, notably for hole-doped iron pnictides. We derive the weak-coupling renormalization group (RG) equations for arbitrary representations of SU($M$)$\times$SU($N$). A ferromagnetic spin coupling results in a protracted RG flow, accounting for the surprising particle-hole asymmetry that is observed in the iron-pnictide systems. We establish the low coherence scale $T_{\rm K}$ which depends on the filling through the impurity representation. We also discuss the temperature dependence of the spin and orbital susceptibilities. Finally, we argue that this mechanism explains the strong valence dependence of the coherence scale observed in dilute transition-metal magnetic alloys.

Driven-dissipative ising model: mean field solution

We study the fate of the Ising model and its universal properties when driven by a rapid periodic drive and weakly coupled to a bath at equilibrium. The far from equilibrium steady-state regime of the system is accessed by means of a Floquet mean field approach. We show that, depending on the details of the bath, the drive can strongly renormalize the critical temperature to higher temperatures, modify the critical exponents, or even change the nature of the phase transition from second to first order after the emergence of a tricritical point. Moreover, by judiciously selecting the frequency of the field and by engineering the spectrum of the bath, one can drive a ferromagnetic Hamiltonian to an antiferromagnetically ordered phase and vice-versa.

Electric-field-driven resistive switching in dissipative Hubbard model

We study how strongly correlated electrons on a dissipative lattice evolve from equilibrium when driven by a constant electric field, focusing on the extent of the linear regime and hysteretic non-linear effects at higher fields. We access the non-equilibrium steady states, non-perturbatively in both the field and the electronic interactions, by means of a non-equilibrium dynamical mean-field theory in the Coulomb gauge. The linear response regime is limited by Joule heating effects and breaks down at fields orders of magnitude smaller than the quasi-particle energy scale. For large electronic interactions, strong but experimentally accessible electric fields can induce a resistive switching by driving the strongly correlated metal into a Mott insulator. Hysteretic $I$-$V$ curves suggest that the non-equilibrium current is carried through a spatially inhomogeneous metal-insulator mixed state.

Photo-induced superconductivity in semiconductors

We show that optically pumped semiconductors can exhibit superconductivity. We illustrate this phenomenon in the case of a two-band semiconductor tunnel-coupled to broad-band reservoirs and driven by a continuous wave laser. More realistically, we also show that superconductivity can be induced in a two-band semiconductor interacting with a broad-spectrum light source. We furthermore discuss the case of a three-band model in which the middle band replaces the broad-band reservoirs as the source of dissipation. In all three cases, we derive the simple conditions on the band structure, electron-electron interaction, and hybridization to the reservoirs that enable superconductivity. We compute the finite superconducting gap and argue that the mechanism can be induced through both attractive and repulsive interactions and is robust to high temperatures.

Magnetization dynamics: path-integral formalism for the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation

We construct a path-integral representation of the generating functional for the dissipative dynamics of a classical magnetic moment as described by the stochastic generalization of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation proposed by Brown, with the possible addition of spin-torque terms. In the process of constructing this functional in the Cartesian coordinate system, we critically revisit this stochastic equation. We present it in a form that accommodates for any discretization scheme thanks to the inclusion of a drift term. The generalized equation ensures the conservation of the magnetization modulus and the approach to the Gibbs-Boltzmann equilibrium in the absence of non-potential and time-dependent forces. The drift term vanishes only if the mid-point Stratonovich prescription is used. We next reset the problem in the more natural spherical coordinate system. We show that the noise transforms non-trivially to spherical coordinates acquiring a non-vanishing mean value in this coordinate system, a fact that has been often overlooked in the literature. We next construct the generating functional formalism in this system of coordinates for any discretization prescription. The functional formalism in Cartesian or spherical coordinates should serve as a starting point to study different aspects of the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of magnets. Extensions to colored noise, micro-magnetism and disordered problems are straightforward.

Steady-state entanglement of spatially separated qubits via quantum bath engineering

We propose a scheme for driving a dimer of spatially separated qubits into a maximally entangled non-equilibrium steady state. A photon-mediated retarded interaction between the qubits is realized by coupling them to two tunnel-coupled leaky cavities where each cavity is driven by a coherent microwave tone. The proposed cooling mechanism relies on striking the right balance between the unitary and driven-dissipative dynamics of the qubit subsystem. We map the dimer to an effective transverse-field XY model coupled to a non-equilibrium bath that can be suitably engineered through the choice of drive frequencies and amplitudes. We show that both singlet and triplet states can be obtained with remarkable fidelities. The proposed protocol can be implemented with a superconducting circuit architecture that was recently experimentally realized and paves the way to achieving large-scale entangled systems that are arbitrarily long lived.

Impurity model for non-equilibrium steady states

We propose an out-of-equilibrium impurity model for the dynamical mean-field description of the Hubbard model driven by a finite electric field. The out-of-equilibrium impurity environment is represented by a collection of equilibrium reservoirs at different chemical potentials. We discuss the validity of the impurity model and propose a non-perturbative method, based on a quantum Monte Carlo solver, which provides the steady-state solutions of the impurity and original lattice problems. We discuss the relevance of this approach to other non-equilibrium steady-state contexts.

Dielectric Breakdown of a Mott Insulator

We study the nonequilibrium steady state of a Mott insulator coupled to a thermostat and driven by a constant electric field, starting from weak fields, until the dielectric breakdown, and beyond. We find that the conventional Zener picture does not describe the steady-state physics. In particular, the current at weak field is found to be controlled by the dissipation. Moreover, in connection with the electric-field-driven dimensional crossover, we find that the dielectric breakdown occurs when the field strength is on the order of the Mott gap of the corresponding lower-dimensional system. We also report a resonance and the meltdown of the quasiparticle peak when the field strength is half of this Mott gap.

Dimensional Crossover Driven by an Electric Field

We study the steady-state dynamics of the Hubbard model driven out-of-equilibrium by a constant electric field and coupled to a dissipative heat bath. For very strong field, we find a dimensional reduction: the system behaves as an equilibrium Hubbard model in lower dimensions. We derive steady-state equations for the dynamical mean field theory in the presence of dissipation. We discuss how the electric field induced dimensional crossover affects the momentum resolved and integrated spectral functions, the energy distribution function, as well as the steady current in the non-linear regime.

Coarsening of Disordered Quantum Rotors under a Bias Voltage

We solve the dynamics of an ensemble of interacting rotors coupled to two leads at different chemical potential letting a current flow through the system and driving it out of equilibrium. We show that at low temperature the coarsening phase persists under the voltage drop up to a critical value of the applied potential that depends on the characteristics of the electron reservoirs. We discuss the properties of the critical surface in the temperature, voltage, strength of quantum fluctuations and coupling to the bath phase diagram. We analyze the coarsening regime finding, in particular, which features are essentially quantum mechanical and which are basically classical in nature. We demonstrate that the system evolves via the growth of a coherence length with the same time-dependence as in the classical limit, $R(t) \simeq t^{1/2}$ -- the scalar curvature driven universality class. We obtain the scaling function of the correlation function at late epochs in the coarsening regime and we prove that it coincides with the classical one once a prefactor that encodes the dependence on all the parameters is factorized. We derive a generic formula for the current flowing through the system and we show that, for this model, it rapidly approaches a constant that we compute.

Symmetries of generating functionals of Langevin processes with colored multiplicative noise

We present a comprehensive study of the symmetries of the generating functionals of generic Langevin processes with multiplicative colored noise. We treat both Martin-Siggia-Rose-Janssen-deDominicis and supersymmetric formalisms. We summarize the relations between observables that they imply including fluctuation relations, fluctuation-dissipation theorems, and Schwinger-Dyson equations. Newtonian dynamics and their invariances follow in the vanishing friction limit.
