Anomalous features of non-Hermitian topological states

Topological states in non-Hermitian systems are known to exhibit some anomalous features. Here, we find two new anomalous features of non-Hermitian topological states. We consider a one dimensional nonreciprocal Hamiltonian and show that topological robustness can be practically lost for a linear combination of topological eigenstates in non-Hermitian systems due to the non-Hermitian skin effect. We consider a two dimensional non-Hermitian Chern insulator and show that chirality of topological states can be broken at some parameters of the Hamiltonan. This implies that the topological states are no longer immune to backscattering in 2D.

Nonlinear waves in an anti-Hermitian lattice with cubic nonlinearity

In an anti-Hermitian linear system, all energy eigenvalues are purely imaginary and the corresponding eigenvectors are orthogonal. This implies that no stationary state is available in such systems. We consider an anti-Hermitian lattice with cubic nonlinearity and explore novel nonlinear stationary modes. We discuss that relative population is conserved in a nonreciprocal tight binding lattice with periodical boundary conditions as opposed to parity-time (PT) symmetric lattices. We study nonlinear nonrecipocal dimer, triple and quadrimer models and construct stationary nonlinear modes.

Non-Hermitian anomalous skin effect

A non-Hermitian topological insulator is fundamentally different from conventional topological insulators. The non-Hermitian skin effect arises in a nonreciprocal tight binding lattice with open edges. In this case, not only topological states but also bulk states are localized around the edges of the nonreciprocal system. We discuss that controllable switching from topological edge states into topological extended states in a chiral symmetric non-Hermitian system is possible. We show that the skin depth decreases with non-reciprocity for bulk states but increases with it for topological zero energy states.

State conversions around exceptional points

We study state conversion in parity-time (PT) symmetry broken non-Hermitian two level system. We construct a theory and explain underlying mechanism for state conversion and define adiabatic evolutions in non-Hermitian systems. The adiabatic theorem can be used if initial state is an instantaneous eigenstate in Hermitian systems. We show that the system can adiabatically follow the modulationally stable instantaneous eigenstate sooner or later, regardless of initial state if the system parameters are varied slowly in non-Hermitian systems. We discuss the topological feature of dynamical circling in the parameter space.

Dynamical Control in a Quasi-periodically Modulated Optical Lattice

We investigate quantum tunneling phenomena for an optical lattice subjected to a bichromatic ac force. We show that incommensurability of the frequencies leads to super Bloch oscillation. We propose directed super Bloch oscillation for the quasi periodically driven optical lattice. We study the dynamical localization and photon assisted tunneling for a periodical and quasi-periodical ac force.

Self-Accelerating Matter Waves

The free particle Schrodinger equation admits a non-trivial self-accelerating Airy wave packet solution. Recently, the Airy beams that freely accelerate in space was experimentally realized in photonics community. Here we present self-accelerating waves for the Bose-Einstein condensate in a time dependent harmonic oscillator potential. We show that parity and time reversal symmetries for self accelerating waves are spontaneously broken.

PT Symmetric Aubry-Andre Model

PT symmetric Aubry-Andre model describes an array of N coupled optical waveguides with position dependent gain and loss. We show that the reality of the spectrum depends sensitively on the degree of disorder for small number of lattice sites. We obtain the Hofstadter Butterfly spectrum and discuss the existence of the phase transition from extended to localized states. We show that rapidly changing periodical gain/loss materials almost conserves the total intensity.

Berry's Phase for Ultracold Atoms in an Accelerated Optical Lattice

Berry's phase is investigated for ultracold atoms in a frequency modulated optical lattice. It is shown that Berry's phase appears due to Bloch oscillation and the periodic motion of the optical lattice. Particularly, Berry's phase for ultracold atoms under the gravitational force in an oscillating tight-binding optical lattice is calculated analytically. It is found that the Berry's phase depends linearly on the amplitude of the oscillation of the optical lattice.

Off-axis Vortex in a Rotating Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensation

We consider a singly quantized off-axis straight vortex in a rotating dipolar ultracold gas in the Thomas-Fermi (TF) regime. We derive analytic results for small displacements and perform numerical calculations for large displacement within the TF regime. We show that the dipolar interaction energy increases (decreases) as the vortex moves from the trap center to the edge in an oblate (a prolate) trap. We find that for an oblate (a prolate) trap, the effect of the dipole-dipole interaction is to lower (raise) both the precession velocity of an off-center straight vortex line and the angular velocity representing the onset of metastability.
