Determination of hyperfine splittings and Landé $g_J$ factors of $5s~^2S_{1/2}$ and $5p~^2P_{1/2,3/2}$ states of $^{111,113}$Cd$^+$ for a microwave frequency standard

Regarding trapped-ion microwave-frequency standards, we report on the determination of hyperfine splittings and Landé $g_J$ factors of $^{111,113}$Cd$^+$. The hyperfine splittings of the $5p~^2P_{3/2}$ state of $^{111,113}$Cd$^+$ ions were measured using laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy. The Cd$^+$ ions were confined in a linear Paul trap and sympathetically cooled by Ca$^+$ ions. Furthermore, the hyperfine splittings and Landé $g_J$ factors of the $5s~^2S_{1/2}$ and $5p~^2P_{1/2,3/2}$ levels of $^{111,113}$Cd$^+$ were calculated with greater accuracy using the multiconfiguration Dirac--Hartree--Fock scheme. The measured hyperfine splittings and the Dirac--Hartree--Fock calculation values were cross-checked, thereby further guaranteeing the reliability of our results. The results provided in this work can improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the clock transition and the accuracy of the second-order Zeeman shift correction, and subsequently the stability and accuracy of the microwave frequency standard based on trapped Cd$^+$ ions.

Visible spectra of W8+ in an electron-beam ion trap

To provide spectroscopic data for lowly charged tungsten ions relevant to fusion research, this work focuses on the W8+ ion. Six visible spectra lines in the range of 420-660 nm are observed with a compact electron-beam ion trap in Shanghai. These lines are assigned to W8+ based on their intensity variations as increasing electron-beam energy and the M1 line from the ground configuration in W7+. Furthermore, transition energies are calculated for the 30 lowest levels of the 4f14 5s2 5p4, 4f13 5s2 5p5 and 4f12 5s2 5p6 configurations of W8+ by using the flexible atomic code (FAC) and GRASP package, respectively. Reasonably good agreement is found between our two independent atomic-structure calculations. The resulting atomic parameters are adopted to simulate the spectra based on the collisional-radiative model implemented in the FAC code. This assists us with identification of six strong M1 transitions in 4f13 5s2 5p5 and 4f12 5s2 5p6 configurations from our experiments

Hybridization dynamics in CeCoIn5 revealed by ultrafast optical spectroscopy

We investigate the quasiparticle dynamics in the prototype heavy fermion CeCoIn$_5$ using ultrafast optical pump-probe spectroscopy. Our results indicate that this material system undergoes hybridization fluctuations before full establishment of the heavy electron coherence, as the temperature decreases from $\sim$120 K ($T^\dagger$) to $\sim$55 K ($T^*$ ). We reveal that the observed anomalous phonon softening and damping reduction below $T^*$ are directly associated with opening of an indirect hybridization gap. We also discover a distinct collective mode with an energy of $\sim$8 meV, which may be the experimental evidence of the predicted unconventional density wave. Our observations provide critical informations for understanding the hybridization dynamics in heavy fermion materials.

Large-scale multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations for astrophysics: n=4 levels in P-like ions from Mn~XI to Ni~XIV

Using the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock and the relativistic configuration interaction methods, a consistent set of transition energies and radiative transition data for the lowest 546 (623, 701, 745) states of the $3p^4 3d$, $3s 3p^2 3d^2$, $3s 3p^3 4p$, $3s 3p^4$, $3s^2 3d^3$, $3s^2 3p^2 3d$, $3s^2 3p^2 4d$, $3s^2 3p^2 4s$, $3p^3 3d^2$, $3p^5$, $3s 3p 3d^3$, $3s 3p^3 3d$, $3s 3p^3 4s$, $3s^2 3p 3d^2$, %$3s^2 3p^2 4f$, $3s^2 3p^2 4p$, $3s^2 3p^3$ configurations in Mn~XI (Fe~XII, Co~XIII, Ni~XIV) is provided. The comparison between calculated excitation energies for the $n=4$ states and available experimental values for Fe XII indicate that the calculations are highly accurate, with uncertainties of only a few hundred cm$^{-1}$. Lines from these states are prominent in the soft X-rays. With the present calculations, several recent new identifications are confirmed. Other identifications involving $3p^2 4d$ levels in Fe~XII that were found questionable are discussed and a few new assignments are recommended. As some $n=4$ states of the other ions also show large discrepancies between experimental and calculated energies, we reassess their identification. The present study provides highly accurate atomic data for the $n=4$ states of P-like ions of astrophysical interest, for which experimental data are scarce.

Large-scale multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations for astrophysics: Cl-like ions from Cr~VIII to Zn~XIV

We use the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) method combined with the relativistic configuration interaction (RCI) approach (GRASP2K) to provide a consistent set of transition energies and radiative transition data for the lower $n =3$ states in all Cl-like ions of astrophysical importance, from \ion{Cr}{8} to \ion{Zn}{14}. We also provide excitation energies calculated for \mbox{Fe X} using the many-body perturbation theory (MBPT, implemented within FAC). The comparison of the present MCDHF results with MBPT and with the available experimental energies indicates that the theoretical excitation energies are highly accurate, with uncertainties of only a few hundred cm$^{-1}$. Detailed comparisons for Fe~X and Ni~XII highlight discrepancies in the experimental energies found in the literature. Several new identifications are proposed.

Calculations with spectroscopic accuracy: energies and transition rates in the nitrogen isoelectronic sequence from Ar XII to Zn XXIV

Combined relativistic configuration interaction and many-body perturbation calculations are performed for the 359 fine-structure levels of the $2s^2 2p^3$, $2s 2p^4$, $2p^5$, $2s^2 2p^2 3l$, $2s 2p^3 3l$, $2p^4 3l$, and $2s^2 2p^2 4l$ configurations in N-like ions from Ar XII to Zn XXIV. A complete and consistent data set of energies, wavelengths, radiative rates, oscillator strengths, and line strengths for all possible electric dipole, magnetic dipole, electric quadrupole, and magnetic quadrupole transitions among the 359 levels are given for each ion. The present work significantly increases the amount of accurate data for ions in the nitrogen-like sequence, and the accuracy of the energy levels is high enough to serve identification and interpretation of observed spectra involving the $n=3,4$ levels, for which the experimental values are largely scarce. Meanwhile, the results should be of great help in modeling and diagnosing astrophysical and fusion plasmas.

eXTP -- enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry Mission

eXTP is a science mission designed to study the state of matter under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. Primary targets include isolated and binary neutron stars, strong magnetic field systems like magnetars, and stellar-mass and supermassive black holes. The mission carries a unique and unprecedented suite of state-of-the-art scientific instruments enabling for the first time ever the simultaneous spectral-timing-polarimetry studies of cosmic sources in the energy range from 0.5-30 keV (and beyond). Key elements of the payload are: the Spectroscopic Focusing Array (SFA) - a set of 11 X-ray optics for a total effective area of about 0.9 m^2 and 0.6 m^2 at 2 keV and 6 keV respectively, equipped with Silicon Drift Detectors offering <180 eV spectral resolution; the Large Area Detector (LAD) - a deployable set of 640 Silicon Drift Detectors, for a total effective area of about 3.4 m^2, between 6 and 10 keV, and spectral resolution <250 eV; the Polarimetry Focusing Array (PFA) - a set of 2 X-ray telescope, for a total effective area of 250 cm^2 at 2 keV, equipped with imaging gas pixel photoelectric polarimeters; the Wide Field Monitor (WFM) - a set of 3 coded mask wide field units, equipped with position-sensitive Silicon Drift Detectors, each covering a 90 degrees x 90 degrees FoV. The eXTP international consortium includes mostly major institutions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Universities in China, as well as major institutions in several European countries and the United States. The predecessor of eXTP, the XTP mission concept, has been selected and funded as one of the so-called background missions in the Strategic Priority Space Science Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences since 2011. The strong European participation has significantly enhanced the scientific capabilities of eXTP. The planned launch date of the mission is earlier than 2025.

Dual Fano and Lorentzian line profile poperties of autoionizing states

Ott et al. (Science (340, 716 (2013)) successfully transferred Fano profile into Lorentzian lineshape using an intense infrared laser, after excitation of autoionizing states in helium by attosecond XUV pulse. This is a very important step forward of quantum phase control. However, here we show experimentally that an autoionizing state can have both Fano and Lorentzian behavior naturally, depending on the process involved. This study utilized the inverse process of photon absorption ionization, i.e. electron ion recombination with photon emission, making sure the resonant autoionizing state is not perturbed by the laser fields. Our result implies that excitation of the state through different paths can lead to different Fano profiles for the same resonant state. This allows more options for the combination of laser fields and lead to more opportunities for quantum phase control. Our result also indicates the breakdown of the classical two step picture for dielectronic recombination.

The excited hadron spectrum in lattice QCD using a new variance reduction method

Progress in calculating the spectrum of excited baryons and mesons in lattice QCD is described. Correlation matrices of sets of spatially-extended hadron operators have been studied and their effectiveness in facilitating the extraction of excited-state energies is demonstrated. First applications of the stochastic LapH method, a new method of estimating the low-lying effects of quark propagation, are presented.
