Measurement of Magnetic Exchange in Ferromagnet-Superconductor La2/3Ca1/3MnO3/YBa2Cu3O7 Bilayers

The existence of coherent magnetic correlations in the normal phase of cuprate high-temperature superconductors has proven difficult to measure directly. Here we report on a study of ferromagnetic-superconductor bilayers of La2/3Ca1/3MnO3/YBa2Cu3O7 (LCMO/YBCO) with varying YBCO layer thicknesses. Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, we demonstrate that the ferromagnetic layer induces a Cu magnetic moment in the adjacent high-temperature superconductor. For thin samples, this moment exists at all temperatures below the Curie temperature of the LCMO layer. However, for a YBCO layer thicker than 12 unit cells, the Cu moment is suppressed for temperatures above the superconducting transition, suggesting this to be a direct measurement of magnetic coherence in the normal state of a superconducting oxide.

Bulk electronic structure of optimally doped Ba(Fe1−x_{1-x}Cox_{x})2_2As2_2

We report high-resolution, bulk Compton scattering measurements unveiling the Fermi surface of an optimally-doped iron-arsenide superconductor, Ba(Fe0.93_{0.93}Co0.07_{0.07})2_2As2_2. Our measurements are in agreement with first-principles calculations of the electronic structure, revealing both the XX-centered electron pockets and the ΓΓ-centered hole pockets. Moreover, our data are consistent with the strong three-dimensionality of one of these sheets that has been predicted by electronic structure calculations at the local-density-approximation-minimum As position. Complementary calculations of the noninteracting susceptibility, χ0(q,ω)χ_0({\bf q}, ω), suggest that the broad peak that develops due to interband Fermi-surface nesting, and which has motivated several theories of superconductivity in this class of material, survives the measured three dimensionality of the Fermi surface in this family.

Bulk Spin Polarization of Co(1−x)_{(1-x)}Fex_xS2_2

We report on a new method to determine the degree of bulk spin polarization in single crystal Co(1−x)_{(1-x)}Fex_xS2_2 by modeling magnetic Compton scattering with {\it ab initio} calculations. Spin-dependent Compton profiles were measured for CoS2_2 and Co0.9_{0.9}Fe0.1_{0.1}S2_2. The {\it ab initio} calculations were then refined by rigidly shifting the bands to provide the best fit between the calculated and experimental directional profiles for each sample. The bulk spin polarizations, PP, corresponding to the spin-polarized density of states at the Fermi level, were then extracted from the {\it refined} calculations. The values were found to be P=−72±6P=-72 \pm 6 % and P=18±7P=18 \pm 7% for CoS2_2 and Co0.9_{0.9}Fe0.1_{0.1}S2_2 respectively. Furthermore, determinations of PP weighted by the Fermi velocity (vFv_F or vF2v_F^2) were obtained, permitting a rigorous comparison with other experimental data and highlighting the experimental dependence of PP on vFv_F.

The electronic structure of {\em R}NiC2_2 intermetallic compounds

First-principles calculations of the electronic structure of members of the RRNiC2_2 series are presented, and their Fermi surfaces investigated for nesting propensities which might be linked to the charge-density waves exhibited by certain members of the series (RR = Sm, Gd and Nd). Calculations of the generalized susceptibility, χ0(q,ω)χ_{0}({\bf q},ω), show strong peaks at the same q{\bf q}-vector in both the real and imaginary parts for these compounds. Moreover, this peak occurs at a wavevector which is very close to that experimentally observed in SmNiC2_2. In contrast, for LaNiC2_2 (which is a superconductor below 2.7K) as well as for ferromagnetic SmNiC2_2, there is no such sharp peak. This could explain the absence of a charge-density wave transition in the former, and the destruction of the charge-density wave that has been observed to accompany the onset of ferromagnetic order in the latter.
