Integrable random matrix ensembles

We propose new classes of random matrix ensembles whose statistical properties are intermediate between statistics of Wigner-Dyson random matrices and Poisson statistics. The construction is based on integrable N-body classical systems with a random distribution of momenta and coordinates of the particles. The Lax matrices of these systems yield random matrix ensembles whose joint distribution of eigenvalues can be calculated analytically thanks to integrability of the underlying system. Formulas for spacing distributions and level compressibility are obtained for various instances of such ensembles.

Trace formula for dielectric cavities II: Regular, pseudo-integrable, and chaotic examples

Dielectric resonators are open systems particularly interesting due to their wide range of applications in optics and photonics. In a recent paper [PRE, vol. 78, 056202 (2008)] the trace formula for both the smooth and the oscillating parts of the resonance density was proposed and checked for the circular cavity. The present paper deals with numerous shapes which would be integrable (square, rectangle, and ellipse), pseudo-integrable (pentagon) and chaotic (stadium), if the cavities were closed (billiard case). A good agreement is found between the theoretical predictions, the numerical simulations, and experiments based on organic micro-lasers.

Random matrix ensembles associated with Lax matrices

A method to generate new classes of random matrix ensembles is proposed. Random matrices from these ensembles are Lax matrices of classically integrable systems with a certain distribution of momenta and coordinates. The existence of an integrable structure permits to calculate the joint distribution of eigenvalues for these matrices analytically. Spectral statistics of these ensembles are quite unusual and in many cases give rigorously new examples of intermediate statistics.

Spectral statistics of a pseudo-integrable map: the general case

It is well established numerically that spectral statistics of pseudo-integrable models differs considerably from the reference statistics of integrable and chaotic systems. In [PRL,93 (2004) 254102] statistical properties of a certain quantized pseudo-integrable map had been calculated analytically but only for a special sequence of matrix dimensions. The purpose of this paper is to obtain the spectral statistics of the same quantum map for all matrix dimensions.

Trace formula for dieletric cavities : I. General properties

The construction of the trace formula for open dielectric cavities is examined in detail. Using the Krein formula it is shown that the sum over cavity resonances can be written as a sum over classical periodic orbits for the motion inside the cavity. The contribution of each periodic orbit is the product of the two factors. The first is the same as in the standard trace formula and the second is connected with the product of reflection coefficients for all points of reflection with the cavity boundary. Two asymptotic terms of the smooth resonance counting function related with the area and the perimeter of the cavity are derived. The coefficient of the perimeter term differs from the one for closed cavities due to unusual high-energy asymptotics of the $\mathbf{S}$-matrix for the scattering on the cavity. Corrections to the leading semi-classical formula are briefly discussed. Obtained formulas agree well with numerical calculations for circular dielectric cavities.

SLE description of the nodal lines of random wave functions

The nodal lines of random wave functions are investigated. We demonstrate numerically that they are well approximated by the so-called SLE_6 curves which describe the continuum limit of the percolation cluster boundaries. This result gives an additional support to the recent conjecture that the nodal domains of random (and chaotic) wave functions in the semi classical limit are adequately described by the critical percolation theory. It is also shown that using the dipolar variant of SLE reduces significantly finite size effects.

Spectral statistics of a quantum interval-exchange map

Curious spectral properties of an ensemble of random unitary matrices appearing in the quantization of a map p -> p+alpha, q -> q+f(p+alpha) in [Giraud et al. nlin.CD/0403033] are investigated. When alpha=m/n with integer co-prime m,n and matrix dimension N -> infinity is such that mN = 1 or -1 mod n, local spectral statistics of this ensemble tends to the semi-Poisson distribution [Bogomolny et al. Eur. Phys. J. B 19, 121 (2001)] with arbitrary integer or half-integer level repulsion at small distances: R(s)-> s^{beta} when s -> 0 and beta=n-1 or n/2-1 depending on time-reversal symmetry of the map.

Distribution of Eigenvalues for the Modular Group

The two-point correlation function of energy levels for free motion on the modular domain, both with periodic and Dirichlet boundary conditions, are explicitly computed using a generalization of the Hardy-Littlewood method. It is shown that ion the limit of small separations they show an uncorrelated behaviour and agree with the Poisson distribution but they have prominent number-theoretical oscillations at larger scale. The results agree well with numerical simulations.
