Stoichiometry Dependence of Potential Screening at La(1−δ)_{(1-δ)}Al(1+δ)_{(1+δ)}O3_3/SrTiO3_3 Interfaces

Hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) and variable kinetic energy x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (VKE-XPS) analyses have been performed on 10 unit cell La(1−δ)_{(1-δ)}Al(1+δ)_{(1+δ)}O3_3 films, with La:Al ratios of 1.1, 1.0, and 0.9, deposited on SrTiO3_3. Of the three films, only the Al-rich film was known to have a conductive interface. VKE-XPS, coupled with maximum entropy analysis, shows significant differences in the compositional depth profile between the Al-rich, the La-rich, and stoichiometric films; significant La enrichment at the interface is observed in the La-rich and stoichiometric films, while the Al-rich shows little to no intermixing. Additionally, the La-rich and stoichiometric films show a high concentration of Al at the surface, which is not observed in the Al-rich film. HAXPES valence band (VB) analysis shows a broadening of the VB for the Al-rich sample relative to the stoichiometric and La-rich samples, which have insulating interfaces. This broadening is consistent with an electric field across the Al-rich film. These results are consistent with a defect driven electronic reconstruction.

What superconducts in sulfur hydrides under pressure, and why

The recent discovery of superconductivity at 190~K in highly compressed H2_{2}S is spectacular not only because it sets a record high critical temperature, but because it does so in a material that appears to be, and we argue here that it is, a conventional strong-coupling BCS superconductor. Intriguingly, superconductivity in the observed pressure and temperature range was predicted theoretically in a similar compound H3_{3}S. Several important questions about this remarkable result, however, are left unanswered: (1) Does the stoichiometry of the superconducting compound differ from the nominal composition, and could it be the predicted H3_{3}S compound? (2) Is the physical origin of the anomalously high critical temperature related only to the high H phonon frequencies, or does strong electron-ion coupling play a role? We show that at experimentally relevant pressures H2_2S is unstable, decomposing into H3_3S and S, and that H3_3S has a record high TcT_c due to its covalent bonds driven metallic. The main reason for this extraordinarily high TcT_c in H3_3S as compared with MgB2_2, another compound with a similar superconductivity mechanism, is the high vibrational frequency of the much lighter H atoms.

Spin transition in Gd3_3N@C80_{80}, detected by low-temperature on-chip SQUID technique

We present a magnetic study of the Gd3_3N@C80_{80} molecule, consisting of a Gd-trimer via a Nitrogen atom, encapsulated in a C80_{80} cage. This molecular system can be an efficient contrast agent for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) applications. We used a low-temperature technique able to detect small magnetic signals by placing the sample in the vicinity of an on-chip SQUID. The technique implemented at NHMFL has the particularity to operate in high magnetic fields of up to 7 T. The Gd3_3N@C80_{80} shows a paramagnetic behavior and we find a spin transition of the Gd3_3N structure at 1.2 K. We perform quantum mechanical simulations, which indicate that one of the Gd ions changes from a 8S7/2^8S_{7/2} state (L=0,S=7/2L=0, S=7/2) to a 7F6^7F_{6} state (L=S=3,J=6L=S=3, J=6), likely due to a charge transfer between the C80_{80} cage and the ion.
