Fermi velocity renormalization and dynamical gap generation in graphene

We study the renormalization of the Fermi velocity by the long-range Coulomb interactions between the charge carriers in the Dirac-cone approximation for the effective low-energy description of the electronic excitations in graphene at half filling. Solving the coupled system of Dyson-Schwinger equations for the dressing functions in the corresponding fermion propagator with various approximations for the particle-hole polarization we observe that Fermi velocity renormalization effects generally lead to a considerable increase of the critical coupling for dynamical gap generation and charge-density wave formation at the semimetal-insulator transition.

Effects of electron-electron interactions in suspended graphene

We investigate the problem of dynamical gap generation in suspended graphene by long-range Coulomb interactions at strong coupling with Dyson-Schwinger equations. Including renormalization effects on the Fermi velocity we obtain a critical coupling constant $α_c=2.85$ which is larger than the bare coupling $α_0=2.19$ of suspended graphene. This suggests that at low energies the running of the Fermi velocity prevents the emergence of a gapped phase. Our calculation is thus in agreement with the experimental observation that suspended graphene remains in the semimetal phase.

Charge confinement and Klein tunneling from doping graphene

In the present work, we investigate how structural defects in graphene can change its transport properties. In particular, we show that breaking of the sublattice symmetry in a graphene monolayer overcomes the Klein effect, leading to confined states of massless Dirac fermions. Experimentally, this corresponds to chemical bonding of foreign atoms to carbon atoms, which attach themselves to preferential positions on one of the two sublattices. In addition, we consider the scattering off a tensor barrier, which describes the rotation of the honeycomb cells of a given region around an axis perpendicular to the graphene layer. We demonstrate that in this case the intervalley mixing between the Dirac points emerges, and that Klein tunneling occurs.

Higher order heavy quark Green's functions in Coulomb gauge

The Dyson-Schwinger equation for the 4-point quark Green's functions is studied. In the limit of the heavy quark mass and with the truncation to include only the dressed two point functions for the Yang-Mills sector, we provide an exact solution for the 4-point quark Green's functions, in both quark-antiquark and diquark channels, and show that the corresponding poles relate to the bound state energy of the heavy quark systems. Moreover, a natural separation between physical and unphysical poles in the Green's functions emerges.

Coulomb gauge confinement in the heavy quark limit

The relationship between the nonperturbative Green's functions of Yang-Mills theory and the confinement potential is investigated. By rewriting the generating functional of quantum chromodynamics in terms of a heavy quark mass expansion in Coulomb gauge, restricting to leading order in this expansion and considering only the two-point functions of the Yang-Mills sector, the rainbow-ladder approximation to the gap and Bethe-Salpeter equations is shown to be exact in this case and an analytic, nonperturbative solution is presented. It is found that there is a direct connection between the string tension and the temporal gluon propagator. Further, it is shown that for the 4-point quark correlation functions, only confined bound states of color-singlet quark-antiquark (meson) and quark-quark (baryon) pairs exist.

Three-quark confinement potential from the Faddeev equation

In the heavy quark limit of Coulomb gauge QCD and by truncating the Yang-Mills sector to include only dressed two-point functions, an analytic nonperturbative solution to the Faddeev equation for three-quark bound states in the case of equal quark separations is presented. A direct connection between the temporal gluon propagator and the three-quark confinement potential is provided and it is shown that only color singlet qqq (baryon) states are physically allowed.
