Analytical solution for the surface states of antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$

Recently, the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has attracted great attention. It has an out-of-plane antiferromagnetic order, which is believed to open a sizable energy gap in the surface states. This gap, however, was not always observable in the latest angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments. To address this issue, we analytically derive an effective model for the two-dimensional (2D) surface states by starting from a three-dimensional (3D) Hamiltonian for bulk MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and taking into account the spatial profile of the bulk magnetization. Our calculations suggest that the diminished surface gap may be caused by a much smaller and more localized intralayer ferromagnetic order. In addition, we calculate the spatial distribution and penetration depth of the surface states, which indicates that the surface states are mainly embedded in the first two septuple layers from the terminating surface. From our analytical results, the influence of the bulk parameters on the surface states can be found explicitly. Furthermore, we derive a $\bf{k}\cdot \bf{p}$ model for MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ thin films and show the oscillation of the Chern number between odd and even septuple layers. Our results will be helpful for the ongoing explorations of the MnBi$_x$Te$_y$ family.

Quantum oscillation beyond the quantum limit in pseudospin Dirac materials

Recently, many unexpected fine structures in electric, magnetic, and thermoelectric responses at extremely magnetic fields in topological materials have attracted tremendous interest. We propose a new mechanism of quantum oscillation beyond the strong-field quantum limit for Dirac fermions. The amplitude of the oscillation is far larger than the usual Shubnikov--de Haas oscillation. The oscillation tends to be periodic in the magnetic field B, instead of 1/B. The period of the oscillation does not depend on the Fermi energy. These behaviors cannot be described by the famous Lifshitz-Kosevich formula. The oscillation arises from a mechanism that we refer to as the inversion of the lowest Landau level, resulted from the competition between the pseudospin Dirac-type Landau levels and real-spin Zeeman spitting beyond the quantum limit. This inversion gives rise to the oscillation of the Fermi energy and conductivity at extremely large magnetic fields. This mechanism will be useful for understanding the unexpected fine structures observed in the strong-field quantum limit in Dirac materials.

Anomalous Phase Shift of Quantum Oscillations in 3D Topological Semimetals

Berry phase physics is closely related to a number of topological states of matter. Recently discovered topological semimetals are believed to host a nontrivial $π$ Berry phase to induce a phase shift of $\pm 1/8$ in the quantum oscillation ($+$ for hole and $-$ for electron carriers). We theoretically study the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation of Weyl and Dirac semimetals, taking into account their topological nature and inter-Landau band scattering. For a Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry, the phase shift is found to change nonmonotonically and go beyond known values of $\pm 1/8$ and $\pm 5/8$. For a Dirac semimetal or paramagnetic Weyl semimetal, time-reversal symmetry leads to a discrete phase shift of $\pm 1/8$ or $\pm 5/8$, as a function of the Fermi energy. Different from the previous works, we find that the topological band inversion can lead to beating patterns in the absence of Zeeman splitting. We also find the resistivity peaks should be assigned integers in the Landau index plot. Our findings may account for recent experiments in Cd$_2$As$_3$ and should be helpful for exploring the Berry phase in various 3D systems.

Effect of Covalent Functionalisation on Thermal Transport Across Graphene-Polymer Interfaces

This paper is concerned with the interfacial thermal resistance for polymer composites reinforced by various covalently functionalised graphene. By using molecular dynamics simulations, the obtained results show that the covalent functionalisation in graphene plays a significant role in reducing the graphene-paraffin interfacial thermal resistance. This reduction is dependent on the coverage and type of functional groups. Among the various functional groups, butyl is found to be the most effective in reducing the interfacial thermal resistance, followed by methyl, phenyl and formyl. The other functional groups under consideration such as carboxyl, hydroxyl and amines are found to produce negligible reduction in the interfacial thermal resistance. For multilayer graphene with a layer number up to four, the interfacial thermal resistance is insensitive to the layer number. The effects of the different functional groups and the layer number on the interfacial thermal resistance are also elaborated using the vibrational density of states of the graphene and the paraffin matrix. The present findings provide useful guidelines in the application of functionalised graphene for practical thermal management.

Linear magnetotransport in monolayer MoS$_2$

A momentum balance equation is developed to investigate the magnetotransport properties in monolayer molybdenum disulphide when a strong perpendicular magnetic field and a weak in-plane electric field are applied simultaneously. At low temperature, in the presence of intravalley impurity scattering Shubnikov de Haas oscillation shows up accompanying by a beating pattern arising from large spin splitting and its period may halve due to high-order oscillating term at large magnetic field for samples with ultrahigh mobility. In the case of intervalley disorders, there exists a magnetic-field range where the magnetoresistivity almost vanishes. For low-mobility layer, a phase-inversion of oscillating peaks is acquired in accordance with recent experiment. At high temperature when Shubnikov de Haas oscillation is suppressed, the magnetophonon resonances induced by both optical phonons (mainly due to homopolar and Fröhlich modes) and acoustic phonons (mainly due to intravalley transverse and longitudinal acoustic modes) emerge for suspended system with high mobility. For the single layer on a substrate, another resonance due to surface optical phonons may occur, resulting in a complex behavior of the total magnetoresistance. The beating pattern of magnetophonon resonance due to optical phonons can also be observed. However, for nonsuspended layer with low mobility, the magnetoresistance oscillation almost disappears and the resistivity increases with field monotonously.

Nonlinear magnetotransport in a dc-current-biased graphene

A balance-equation scheme is developed to investigate the magnetotransport in a dc-current-biased graphene. We examine the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation under a nonzero bias current. With an increase in the current density, the oscillatory differential resistivity exhibits phase inversion, in agreement with recent experimental observation. In the presence of surface optical phonons, a second phase inversion may occur at higher dc bias, due to the reduced influence of electron-heating and the enhanced direct effect of current on differential magnetoresistivity. We also predict the appearance of current-induced magnetoresistance oscillation in suspended graphene at lower magnetic fields and larger current densities. For the graphene mobility currently available ($\approx 20\,{\rm m^2/Vs}$), the oscillatory behavior may be somewhat altered by magnetophonon resonance arising from intrinsic acoustic phonon under finite bias current condition.

Topology of Entanglement in Multipartite States with Translational Invariance

The topology of entanglement in multipartite states with translational invariance is discussed in this article. Two global features are foundby which one can distinguish distinct states. These are the cyclic unit and the quantised geometric phase. Furthermore the topology is indicated by the fractional spin. Finally a scheme is presented for preparation of these types of states in spin chain systems, in which the degeneracy of the energy levels characterises the robustness of the states with translational invariance.

Linear magnetoresistance on the topological surface

A positive, non-saturating and dominantly linear magnetoresistance is demonstrated to occur in the surface state of a topological insulator having a wavevector-linear energy dispersion together with a finite positive Zeeman energy splitting. This linear magnetoresistance shows up within quite wide magnetic-field range in a spatially homogenous system of high carrier density and low mobility in which the conduction electrons are in extended states and spread over many smeared Landau levels, and is robust against increasing temperature, in agreement with recent experimental findings in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ nanoribbons.

Hexagonal Warping Effects on the Surface Transport in Topological Insulators

We investigate the charge conductivity and current-induced spin polarization on the surface state of a three-dimensional topological insulator by including the hexagonal warping effect of Fermi surface both in classical and quantum diffusion regimes. We present general expressions of conductivity and spin polarization, which are reduced to simple forms for usual scattering potential. Due to the hexagonal warping, the conductivity and spin polarization show an additional quadratic carrier density dependence both for Boltzmann contribution and quantum correction. In the presence of warping term, the surface states still reveal weak anti-localization. Moreover, the dielectric function in the random phase approximation is also explored, and we find that it may be momentum-angle-dependent.

Geometric Entanglement in Valance-Bond-Solid state

Multipartite entanglement, measured by the geometric entanglement(GE), is discussed for integer spin Valance-Bond-Solid (VBS) state respectively with periodic boundary condition(PBC) and open boundary condition(OBC) in this paper. The optimization in the definition of geometric entanglement can be reduced greatly by exploring the symmetry of VBS state, and then the fully separable state can be determined explicitly. Numerical evaluation for GE by the random simulation is also implemented in order to demonstrate the validity of the reductions. Our calculations show that GE is saturated by a finite value with the increment of particle number, that means that the total entanglement for VBS state would be divergent under the thermodynamic limit. Moreover it is found that the scaling behavior of GE with spin number $s$ is fitted as $α\log (s+\tfracβ{s}+γ)+δ$, in which the values of the parameters $α, β, γ, σ$ are only dependent on the parity of spin $s$. A comparison with entanglement entropy of VBS state is also made, in order to demonstrate the essential differences between multipartite and bipartite entanglement in this model.

Current-induced spin polarization for a general two-dimensional electron system

In this paper, current-induced spin polarization for two-dimensional electron gas with a general spin-orbit interaction is investigated. For isotropic energy spectrum, the in-plane current-induced spin polarization is found to be dependent on the electron density for non-linear spin-orbit interaction and increases with the increment of sheet density, in contrast to the case for $\bm k$-linear spin-orbit coupling model. The numerical evaluation is performed for InAs/InSb heterojunction with spin-orbit coupling of both linear and cubic spin-orbit coupling types. For $δ$-type short-range electron-impurity scattering, it is found that the current-induced spin polarization increases with increasing the density when cubic spin-orbit couplings are considered. However, for remote disorders, a rapid enhancement of current-induced spin polarization is always observed at high electron density, even in the case without cubic spin-orbit coupling. This result demonstrates the collision-related feature of current-induced spin polarization. The effects of different high order spin-orbit couplings on spin polarization can be comparable.
