Coupled-channel dynamics with chiral long-range forces in the open-charm sector of QCD

We perform an analysis of Lattice QCD data in the open-charm sector based on the chiral SU(3) Lagrangian. The low-energy constants are adjusted to recover the open-charm meson masses on Lattice QCD ensembles from HPQCD, ETMC and HSC with pion and kaon masses smaller than 550 MeV. A significant set of low-energy parameters is obtainable only if the most recent information from HSC on scattering observables is included in our global fit. For the first time our analysis considers the effect of left-hand cuts as developed in terms of a generalized potential approach (GPA) previously by one of the authors. Here we use coupled-channel interaction terms at the one-loop level. The elastic s-wave and p-wave $D\,π$, $D K $ and $D \bar K $ scattering phase shifts on ensembles with nominal pion masses of about 239 MeV and 391 MeV are reproduced faithfully. Based on such low-energy parameters we predict s- and p-wave phase shifts and inelasticities at physical quark masses, where the statistical uncertainties in the phase shifts are smaller than 1 degree always. Most striking would be the exotic s-wave $D_s π$ channel, for which we predict a resonance state at about 2.287 GeV where the phase shift passes through 90 degrees.

Interplay of diffraction and nonlinear effects in propagation of ultrashort pulses

We investigate the interplay of diffraction and nonlinear effects during propagation of very short light pulses. Adapting the factorization approach to the problem at hand by keeping the transverse-derivative terms apart from the residual nonlinear contributions we derive an unidirectional propagation equation valid for weak dispersion and reducing to the slowly-evolving-wave-approximation for the case of paraxial rays. Comparison of numerical simulation results for the two equations shows pronounced differences when self-focusing plays important role. We devote special attention to modelling propagation of ultrashort terahertz pulses taking into account diffraction as well as Kerr type and second order nonlinearities. Comparing measured and simulated wave forms we deduce the value of the nonlinear refractive index of lithium niobate in the terahertz region to be three orders of magnitude larger than in the visible.

Spectral representation for u- and t-channel exchange processes in a partial-wave decomposition

We study the analytic structure of partial-wave amplitudes derived from u- and t-channel exchange processes. The latter plays a crucial role in dispersion-theory approaches to coupled-channel systems that model final state interactions in QCD. A general spectral representation is established that is valid in the presence of anomalous thresholds, decaying particles or overlapping left-hand and right-hand cut structures as it occurs frequently in hadron physics. The results are exemplified at hand of ten specific processes.

Nuclear Drell-Yan effect in a covariant model

We investigate effects of nuclear medium on antiquark distribution in nuclei applying the results of a recently developed relativistically-covariant self-consistent model for the pion and the isobar. We take into account Fermi motion including Pauli blocking and binding effects on the nucleons and medium effects on the isobar and pion leading to modest enhancement of the pion light-cone-momentum distribution in large nuclei. As a consequence the Drell-Yan cross-section ratio with respect to the deuteron exceeds one only for small values of the light-cone momentum.

Effects of consistent and inconsistent isobar coupling in the nuclear medium

We investigate effects of consistent (conserving the number of degrees of freedom) and inconsistent pion-nucleon-isobar couplings on the isobar propagator in vacuum and in nuclear medium. Using the consistent coupling in conjunction with a convenient basis leads to significant simplification of the isobar vacuum and in-medium self energy and dressed propagator compared to the case of inconsistent interaction. The higher-derivative nature of the consistent interaction requires a suitable compensation by an additional form-factor term or adjustment in the used cut-off values. This modification is straightforward to perform and assures that the physical observables connected to the spin-3/2 sector in vacuum and nuclear medium acquire values indistinguishable from the ones obtained by using an inconsistent coupling.

Kaon and antikaon properties in cold nuclear medium

We present results of a self-consistent calculation for the kaon and antikaon spectral functions in cold nuclear matter, using as input the kaon-nucleon and antikaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes of the vacuum. We investigate the effect of in-medium pion dressing on the antikaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes and antikaon spectral function. We find the influence of pion dressing to be minor on the antikaon spectral function and limited on the hyperon resonances causing only a small additional broadening. An exception is the Σ(1690). At nuclear saturation density an attractive mass shift of about 20 MeV and width of about 130 MeV is obtained. The kaon shows a repulsive mass increase of 36 MeV and a small width of the quasiparticle peak at saturation density.

Open-charm systems in cold nuclear matter

We study the spectral distributions of charmed meson with $J^P=0^-$ quantum numbers in cold nuclear matter applying a self-consistent and covariant many-body approach established previously for the nuclear dynamics of kaons. At leading orders the computation requires as input the free-space two-body scattering amplitudes only. Our results are based on the s-wave meson-nucleon amplitudes obtained recently in terms of a coupled-channel approach. The amplitudes are characterized by the presence of many resonances in part so far not observed. This gives rise to an intriguing dynamics of charmed mesons in nuclear matter. At nuclear saturation density we predict a pronounced two-mode structure of the $D^+$ mesons with a main branch pushed up by about 32 MeV. The lower branch reflects the coupling to two resonance-hole states that are almost degenerate. For the $D^-$ we obtain a single mode pushed up by about 18 MeV relative to the vacuum mode. Most spectacular are the results for the $D^+_s$ meson. The presence of an exotic resonance-hole state gives rise to a rather broad and strongly momentum dependent spectral distribution.

Chiral symmetry, strangeness and resonances

We review the important role played by the chiral SU(3) symmetry in predicting the properties of antikaons and hyperon resonances in cold nuclear matter. Objects of crucial importance are the meson-baryon scattering amplitudes obtained within the chiral coupled-channel effective field theory. The formation of baryon resonances as implied by chiral coupled-channel dynamics is discussed. Results for antikaon and hyperon-resonance spectral functions are presented for isospin symmetric and asymmetric matter.

Self consistent and covariant propagation of pions, nucleon and isobar resonances in cold nuclear matter

We evaluate the in-medium spectral functions for pions, nucleon and isobar resonances in a self consistent and covariant manner. The calculations are based on a recently developed formulation which leads to predictions in terms of the pion-nucleon scattering phase shifts and a set of Migdal parameters describing important short range correlation effects. We do not observe significant softening of pion modes if we insist on reasonable isobar resonance properties but predict a considerable broadening of the N(1440) and N(1520) resonances in nuclear matter. Contrasted results are obtained for the s-wave N(1535) and N(1650) resonances which are affected by a nuclear environment very little. The properties of slowly moving isobar's in nuclear matter are found to depend very sensitively on a soft form factor in the piNN vertex, which is not controlled by the piN scattering data.

Self consistent propagation of hyperons and antikaons in nuclear matter based on relativistic chiral SU(3) dynamics

We evaluate the antikaon spectral density in isospin symmetric nuclear matter. The in-medium antikaon-nucleon scattering process and the antikaon propagation is treated in a self consistent and relativistic manner where a maximally scheme-independent formulation is derived by performing a partial density resummation in terms of the free-space antikaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes. The latter amplitudes are taken from a covariant and chiral coupled-channel SU(3) approach which includes s-, p- and d-waves systematically. Particular care is taken on the proper evaluation of the in-medium mixing of the partial waves. Our analysis establishes a rich structure of the antikaon spectral function with considerable strength at small energies. At nuclear saturation density we predict attractive mass shifts for the $Λ(1405)$, $Σ(1385)$ and $Λ(1520)$ of about 60 MeV, 60 MeV and 100 MeV respectively. The hyperon states are found to exhibit at the same time an increased decay width of about 120 MeV for the s-wave $Λ(1405)$, 70 MeV for the p-wave $Σ(1385)$ and 90 MeV for the d-wave $Λ(1520)$ resonance.

Pions in isospin asymmetric matter and nuclear Drell-Yan scattering

Using a self-consistent delta-hole model the pion propagation in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter is studied. In neutron-rich matter, corresponding to heavy nuclei, a significant difference in positive and negative pion light-cone distributions is obtained leading to a nuclear enhancement of up antiquark distribution compared to the down antiquark one. This means that the sea-quark asymmetry in the free nucleon cannot be extracted model independently from an experiment on a neutron-rich nucleus.

Complete spin structure of the pion-nucleon-loop delta self-energy

The complete spin structure of the pion-nucleon-loop contribution to the delta self-energy and dressed propagator is calculated in vacuum, with the most general form of the pion-nucleon-delta vertex. The imaginary parts of the ten Lorentz-scalar coefficients are calculated in closed form, while the real parts are obtained numerically from a dispersion relation. The effect of the pion-nucleon-delta coupling constants and form-factor on the pion-nucleon phase-shift in the spin-3/2 isospin-3/2 channel is studied.

Pions in the nuclear medium and Drell-Yan scattering

We investigate the modification of the pion-cloud in the nuclear medium and its effect on the nuclear Drell-Yan process. The pion's in-medium self-energy is calculated in a self-consistent delta-hole model, with particle-hole contribution also included. Both the imaginary and real part of the pion's and delta's self-energy are taken into account and related through a dispersion relation assuring causality. The resulting in-medium pion light-cone momentum distribution shows only a slight enhancement compared to the one of the free nucleon. As a consequence the ratio of the cross-section for Drell-Yan scattering on nuclear matter and nucleonic target is close to unity in agreement with experiment.
