Acoustic signatures of the field-induced electronic-topological transitions in YbNi$_4$P$_2$

We investigated the magnetoelastic properties of an YbNi$_4$P$_2$ single crystal at low temperatures under magnetic fields directed along the crystallographic [001] axis. We report a series of strong anomalies in the sound velocity, which is consistent with the cascade of electronic-topological transitions reported previously for this compound. In particular, we identify the vanishing of a small orbit on the Fermi surface, associated with a quantum-oscillation frequency of 34 T. Furthermore, the different transitions are better resolved with acoustic modes of particular symmetry. Using a microscopic model adapted to the strongly correlated electronic structure of YbNi$_4$P$_2$, we describe our results by inspecting realistic electron-phonon couplings in reciprocal space for each acoustic mode. This shows how the $k$ selectivity of ultrasound experiments allows to investigate Fermi-surface reconstructions in strongly correlated electronic systems.

Controlling frustrated magnetism on the kagome lattice by uniaxial-strain tuning

It is predicted that strongly interacting spins on a frustrated lattice may lead to a quantum disordered ground state or even form a quantum spin liquid with exotic low-energy excitations. However, a thorough tuning of the frustration strength, separating its effects from those of disorder and other factors, is pending. Here we break the symmetry of a kagome-lattice compound in a controlled manner by applying $in$ $situ$ uniaxial stress. The transition temperature of $\rm Y_3Cu_9(OH)_{18}OCl_8$ is linearly enhanced with strain, $ΔT_{\rm N}/T_{\rm N} \approx 10\%$ upon in-plane compression of order $1\%$, providing clear evidence for a release of frustration and its pivotal role for magnetic order. Our comprehensive $^1$H NMR results suggest a $\overrightarrow{Q}=(1/3\times 1/3)$ state under unstrained conditions and further reveal an incomplete antiferromagnetic transition with fluctuating moments in this strongly frustrated system.

Exchange scaling of ultrafast angular momentum transfer in 4$\it{f}$ antiferromagnets

Ultrafast manipulation of the magnetic state of matter bears great potential for future information technologies. While demagnetisation in ferromagnets is governed by dissipation of angular momentum, materials with multiple spin sublattices, e.g. antiferromagnets, can allow direct angular momentum transfer between opposing spins, promising faster functionality. In lanthanides, 4$\it{f}$ magnetic exchange is mediated indirectly through the conduction electrons (the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction, RKKY), and the effect of such conditions on direct spin transfer processes is largely unexplored. Here, we investigate ultrafast magnetization dynamics in 4f antiferromagnets, and systematically vary the 4$\it{f}$ occupation, thereby altering the magnitude of RKKY. By combining time-resolved soft x-ray diffraction with ab-initio calculations, we find that the rate of direct transfer between opposing moments is directly determined by the magnitude of RKKY. Given the high sensitivity of RKKY to the conduction electrons, our results offer a novel approach for fine-tuning the speed of magnetic devices.

Lattice dynamics in the spin-1/2 frustrated kagome compound herbertsmithite

We investigate the lattice dynamics in the spin-1/2 frustrated kagome compound herbertsmithite ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$ by a combination of infrared spectroscopy measurements and ab initio density functional theory calculations, and provide an unambiguous assignment of infrared-active lattice vibrations involving in-plane and out-of-plane atom displacements in the kagome layers. Upon cooling, non-thermal red-shifts and broadening appear specifically for modes that deform the kagome layer or affect the Cu-O-Cu bond angles, thus creating pronounced modifications of the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling. Our results indicate the presence of a strong magnetoelastic coupling to the spin system. We discuss the effects of this coupling and its relation to recent experiments reporting a global symmetry reduction of the kagome lattice symmetry.

Observation of a cubic Rashba effect in the surface spin structure of rare-earth ternary materials

Spin-orbit interaction and structure inversion asymmetry in combination with magnetic ordering is a promising route to novel materials with highly mobile spin-polarized carriers at the surface. Spin-resolved measurements of the photoemission current from the Si-terminated surface of the antiferromagnet TbRh2Si2 and their analysis within an ab initio one-step theory unveil an unusual triple winding of the electron spin along the fourfold-symmetric constant energy contours of the surface states. A two-band k.p model is presented that yields the triple winding as a cubic Rashba effect. The curious in-plane spin-momentum locking is remarkably robust and remains intact across a paramagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition in spite of spin-orbit interaction on Rh atoms being considerably weaker than the out-of-plane exchange field due to the Tb 4f moments.

Magneto-acoustic study near the quantum critical point of the frustrated quantum antiferromagnet Cs2CuCl4

Magneto-acoustic investigations of the frustrated triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Cs2CuCl4 were performed for the longitudinal modes c11 and c33 in magnetic fields along the a-axis. The temperature dependence of the sound velocity at zero field shows a mild softening at low temperature and displays a small kink-like anomaly at TN. Isothermal measurements at T < TN of the sound attenuation reveal two closely-spaced features of different character on approaching the materials quantum-critical point (QCP) around Bs = 8.5 T for B // a. The peak at slightly lower fields remains sharp down to the lowest temperature and can be attributed to the ordering temperature TN(B). The second anomaly which is rounded and which becomes reduced in size upon cooling is assigned to the materials spin-liquid properties preceding the long-range antiferromagnetic ordering. These two features merge upon cooling suggesting a coincidence at the QCP. The elastic constant at lowest temperatures of our experiment at 32 mK can be well described by a Landau free energy model with a very small magnetoelastic coupling constant G/kB = 2.8 K. The applicability of this classical model indicates the existence of a small gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum which drives the system away from quantum criticality.

Unique magnetic structure of YbCo$_2$Si$_2$

We report on the results of powder and single crystal neutron diffraction to investigate the magnetic order in YbCo$_2$Si$_2$ below the Néel temperature $T_{\rm N} = 1.7~$K in detail. Two different magnetically ordered phases can clearly be distinguished. At lowest temperatures a commensurate magnetic structure with a propagation vector ${\bf k}_1 = (0.25~ 0.25~ 1)$ is found, while the intermediate phase ($T > 0.9~$K) is characterized by an incommensurate magnetic structure with ${\bf k}_2 = (0.25~ 0.086~ 1)$. The magnetic structure in YbCo$_2$Si$_2$ is in marked contrast to all other known RCo$_2$Si$_2$ compounds (R = rare earth element) likely due to some itineracy of the Yb 4f states being responsible for the magnetism.

Avoided ferromagnetic quantum critical point in CeRuPO

CeRuPO is a rare example of a ferromagnetic (FM) Kondo-lattice system. External pressure suppresses the ordering temperature to zero at about $p_c\approx3$ GPa. Our ac-susceptibility and electrical-resistivity investigations evidence that the type of magnetic ordering changes from FM to antiferromagnetic (AFM) at about $p^*\approx0.87$ GPa. Studies in applied magnetic fields suggest that ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations compete for the ground state at $p>p^*$, but finally the AFM correlations win. The change in the magnetic ground-state properties is closely related to the pressure evolution of the crystalline-electric-field level (CEF) scheme and the magnetic Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange interaction. The Néel temperature disappears abruptly in a first-order-like fashion at $p_c$, hinting at the absence of a quantum critical point. This is consistent with the low-temperature transport properties exhibiting Landau-Fermi-liquid (LFL) behavior in the whole investigated pressure range up to 7.5 GPa.

Ferromagnetic order in Yb(Rh$_{0.73}$Co$_{0.27}$)$_{2}$Si$_{2}$

We present the discovery of ferromagnetism in single crystalline Yb(Rh$_{0.73}$Co$_{0.27}$)$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ below $T_{C} = 1.30\,$K with a spontaneous magnetic moment of $0.1\,μ_{B}$/Yb along the crystallographic c-axis. This is shown by the huge c-susceptibility peak, the hysteresis in magnetization as well as by the field-dependent susceptibility and specific heat data. This discovery motivates the reinvestigation of the magnetic order in Yb(Rh$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ with $x < 0.27$ and in pure YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ under small pressures with field along the $c$-direction to look for low-lying ferromagnetic order.

Interplay between Kondo suppression and Lifshitz transitions in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ at high magnetic fields

We investigate the magnetic field dependent thermopower, thermal conductivity, resistivity and Hall effect in the heavy fermion metal YbRh2Si2. In contrast to reports on thermodynamic measurements, we find in total three transitions at high fields, rather than a single one at 10 T. Using the Mott formula together with renormalized band calculations, we identify Lifshitz transitions as their origin. The predictions of the calculations show that all experimental results rely on an interplay of a smooth suppression of the Kondo effect and the spin splitting of the flat hybridized bands.

Lifshitz transitions and quasiparticle de-renormalization in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$

We study the effect of magnetic fields up to 15 T on the heavy fermion state of YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ via Hall effect and magnetoresistance measurements down to 50 mK. Our data show anomalies at three different characteristic fields. We compare our data to renormalized band structure calculations through which we identify Lifshitz transitions associated with the heavy fermion bands. The Hall measurements indicate that the de-renormalization of the quasiparticles, {\it i.e} the destruction of the local Kondo singlets, occurs smoothly while the Lifshitz transitions occur within rather confined regions of the magnetic field.

Thermal and Electrical Transport across a Magnetic Quantum Critical Point

A quantum critical point (QCP) arises at a continuous transition between competing phases at zero temperature. Collective excitations at magnetic QCPs give rise to metallic properties that strongly deviate from the expectations of Landau's Fermi liquid description, the standard theory of electron correlations in metals. Central to this theory is the notion of quasiparticles, electronic excitations which possess the quantum numbers of the bare electrons. Here we report measurements of thermal and electrical transport across the field-induced magnetic QCP in the heavy-fermion compound YbRh$_2$Si$_2$. We show that the ratio of the thermal to electrical conductivities at the zero-temperature limit obeys the Wiedemann-Franz (WF) law above the critical field, $B_c$. This is also expected at $B < B_c$, where weak antiferromagnetic order and a Fermi liquid phase form below 0.07 K ($B = 0$). However, at the critical field the low-temperature electrical conductivity suggests a non-Fermi-liquid ground state and exceeds the thermal conductivity by about 10%. This apparent violation of the WF law provides evidence for an unconventional type of QCP at which the fundamental concept of Landau quasiparticles breaks down. These results imply that Landau quasiparticles break up, and that the origin of this disintegration is inelastic scattering associated with electronic quantum critical fluctuations. Our finding brings new insights into understanding deviations from Fermi-liquid behaviour frequently observed in various classes of correlated materials.

^31P NMR investigations on the ferromagnetic quantum critical system YbNi_4P_2

We studied the new heavy-fermion system YbNi$_{4}$P$_{2}$, which presents strong ferromagnetic correlations, using the local $^{31}$P NMR probe over a wide field (0.2-8.6 \textsf{T}) and temperature (1.8-200 K) range. $^{31}$P NMR Knight shift provides the static spin susceptibility which tracks the bulk susceptibility whereas the spin-lattice relaxation rate $^{31}(1/T_{1}$) provide information about the fluctuations of the Yb 4f moment. The Korringa law is valid over a wide range in temperature and field. The Korringa product $^{31}(1/T_{1}TK^{2}$S$_{0}$) $\ll$ 1 gives evidence for the presence of strong ferromagnetic correlations. Over two decades in temperature a $^{31}(1/T_{1}T) \sim T^{-3/4}$ behaviour was found.

Avoided ferromagnetic quantum critical point: Unusual short-range ordered state in CeFePO

Cerium 4f electronic spin dynamics in single crystals of the heavy-fermion system CeFePO is studied by means of ac-susceptibility, specific heat and muon-spin relaxation ($μ$SR). Short-range static magnetism occurs below the freezing temperature Tg ~ 0.7 K, which prevents the system from accessing the putative ferromagnetic quantum critical point. In the $μ$SR, the sample-averaged muon asymmetry function is dominated by strongly inhomogeneous spin fluctuations below 10 K and exhibits a characteristic time-field scaling relation expected from glassy spin dynamics, strongly evidencing cooperative and critical spin fluctuations. The overall behavior can be ascribed neither to canonical spin glasses nor other disorder-driven mechanisms.

Electron Spin Resonance of the Yb 4f moment in Yb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2

[published in Phys. Rev. B 85, 035119 (2012)] The evolution of spin dynamics from the quantum critical system YbRh2Si2 to the stable trivalent Yb system YbCo2Si2 was investigated by Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. While the Kondo temperature changes by one order of magnitude, all compositions of the single crystalline series Yb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2 show well defined ESR spectra with a clear Yb3+ character for temperatures below \approx 20 K. With increasing Co-content the ESR g-factor along the c-direction strongly increases indicating a continuous change of the ground state wave function and, thus, a continuous change of the crystal electric field. The linewidth presents a complex dependence on the Co-content and is discussed in terms of the Co-doping dependence of the Kondo interaction, the magnetic anisotropy and the influence of ferromagnetic correlations between the 4f states. The results provide evidence that, for low Co-doping, the Kondo interaction allows narrow ESR spectra despite the presence of a large magnetic anisotropy, whereas at high Co-concentrations, the linewidth is controlled by ferromagnetic correlations. A pronounced broadening due to critical correlations at low temperatures is only observed at the highest Co-content. This might be related to the presence of incommensurate magnetic fluctuations.

Ferromagnetism and superconductivity in P-doped CeFeAsO

We report on superconductivity in CeFeAs1-xPxO and the possible coexistence with Ce- ferromagnetism (FM) in a small homogeneity range around x = 30% with ordering temperatures of T_SC = T_C = 4K. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering temperature of Fe at this critical concentration is suppressed to T^N_Fe ~ 40K and does not shift to lower temperatures with further increase of the P concentration. Therefore, a quantum-critical-point scenario with T^N_Fe -> 0K which is widely discussed for the iron based superconductors can be excluded for this alloy series. Surprisingly, thermal expansion and X-ray powder diffraction indicate the absence of an orthorhombic distortion despite clear evidence for short range AFM Fe-ordering from muon-spin-rotation measurements. Furthermore, we discovered the formation of a sharp electron spin resonance signal unambiguously connected with the emergence of FM ordering.

How chemical pressure affects the fundamental properties of rare-earth pnictides: an ARPES view

Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, supplemented by theoretical calculations has been applied to study the electronic structure of heavy-fermion material CeFePO, a homologue to the Fe-based high-temperature superconductors, and CeFeAs_0.7P_0.3O, where the applied chemical pressure results in a ferromagnetic order of the 4f moments. A comparative analysis reveals characteristic differences in the Fe-derived band structure for these materials, implying a rather different hybridization of valence electrons to the localized 4f orbitals. In particular, our results suggest that the ferromagnetism of Ce moments in CeFeAs_0.7P_0.3O is mediated mainly by Fe 3d_xz/yz orbitals, while the Kondo screening in CeFePO is instead due to a strong interaction of Fe 3d_3z^2-r^2 orbitals.

Magnetic order and spin dynamics in the proximity of a ferromagnetic quantum critical point: A μSR study of YbNi4P2

The local 4f-electronic spin dynamics and magnetic order in YbNi4P2 were studied by means of muon-spin relaxation measurements. Zero-field muon-spin relaxation proves static magnetic order with a strongly reduced ordered Yb3+ moment of (2.5-4.6) \times 10-2μB, below TC = 140 mK. Above TC, the muon-spin polarization P(t,B) is dominated by quasihomogeneous spin fluctuations and exhibits a time-field scaling relation P(t,B) = P(t/Bγ), indicating cooperative critical spin dynamics in the system. At T = 190 mK, slightly above TC, γ = 0.81(5), suggesting time-scale invariant power-law behavior for the dynamic electronic spin-spin autocorrelation function.

Evolution of magnetism in Yb(Rh_(1-x)Co_x)2Si2

We present a study of the evolution of magnetism from the quantum critical system YbRh2Si2 to the stable trivalent Yb system YbCo2Si2. Single crystals of Yb(Rh_(1-x)Co_x)2Si2 were grown for 0 < x < 1 and studied by means of magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and specific heat measurements, as well as photoemission spectroscopy. The results evidence a complex magnetic phase diagram, with a non-monotonic evolution of T_N and two successive transitions for some compositions resulting in two tricritical points. The strong similarity with the phase diagram of YbRh2Si2 under pressure indicates that Co substitution basically corresponds to the application of positive chemical pressure. Analysis of the data proves a strong reduction of the Kondo temperature T_K with increasing Co content, T_K becoming smaller than T_N for x ~ 0.5, implying a strong localization of the 4f electrons. Furthermore, low-temperature susceptibility data confirm a competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange. The series Yb(Rh_(1-x)Co_x)2Si2 provides an excellent experimental opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the magnetism at the quantum critical point in the vicinity of YbRh2Si2 where the antiferromagnetic phase disappears (T_N=>0).

H - T phase diagram of YbCo2Si2 with H // [100]

We report on the first high-resolution dc-magnetisation ($M$) measurements on a single crystal of \ycs. $M$ was measured down to 0.05 K and in fields up to 12 T, with the magnetic field $H$ parallel to the crystallographic direction [100]. Two antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transitions have been detected in a field $μ_{0}H = 0.1$ T at $T_{N} = 1.75$ K and $T_{L} = 0.9$ K, in form of a sharp cusp and a sudden drop in $χ= M/H$, respectively. These signatures suggest that the phase transitions are $2^{nd}$ order at $T_{N}$ and $1^{st}$ order at $T_{L}$. The upper transition is suppressed by a critical field $μ_{0}H_{N} = 1.9$ T. The field-dependent magnetisation shows two hysteretic metamagnetic-like steps at the lowest temperature, followed by a sharp kink, which separates the AFM region from the paramagnetic one. The magnetic $H - T$ phase diagram of \ycs has been deduced from the isothermal and isofield curves. Four AFM regions were identified which are separated by $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ order phase-transition lines.

Anisotropic electron spin resonance of YbIr2Si2

A series of electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments were performed on a single crystal of the heavy fermion metal YbIr2Si2 to map out the anisotropy of the ESR-intensity I_ESR which is governed by the microwave field component of the g-factor. The temperature dependencies of I_ESR(T) and g(T) were measured for different orientations and compared within the range 2.6K \le T \le 16K. The analysis of the intensity dependence on the crystal orientation with respect to both the direction of the microwave field and the static magnetic field revealed remarkable features: The intensity variation with respect to the direction of the microwave field was found to be one order of magnitude smaller than expected from the g-factor anisotropy. Furthermore, we observed a weak basal plane anisotropy of the ESR parameters which we interpret to be an intrinsic sample property.

Break up of heavy fermions at an antiferromagnetic instability

We present results of high-resolution, low-temperature measurements of the Hall coefficient, thermopower, and specific heat on stoichiometric YbRh2Si2. They support earlier conclusions of an electronic (Kondo-breakdown) quantum critical point concurring with a field induced antiferromagnetic one. We also discuss the detachment of the two instabilities under chemical pressure. Volume compression/expansion (via substituting Rh by Co/Ir) results in a stabilization/weakening of magnetic order. Moderate Ir substitution leads to a non-Fermi-liquid phase, in which the magnetic moments are neither ordered nor screened by the Kondo effect. The so-derived zero-temperature global phase diagram promises future studies to explore the nature of the Kondo breakdown quantum critical point without any interfering magnetism.

Effect of chemical substitution and pressure on YbRh2Si2

We carried out electrical resistivity experiments on (Yb,La)Rh2Si2 and on Yb(Rh,Ir)2Si2 under pressure and in magnetic fields. YbRh2Si2 exhibits a weak antiferromagnetic transition at atmospheric pressure with a Néel temperature of only T_N = 70 mK. By applying a small magnetic field T_N can be continuously suppressed to T=0 at B_c = 60 mT (B_|_c) driving the system to a quantum critical point (QCP). On applying external pressure the magnetic phase is stabilized and T_N(p) is increasing as usually observed in Yb-based heavy-fermion metals. Substituting Yb by La or Rh by Ir allows to create a negative chemical pressure, La (Ir) being smaller than Yb (Rh), and eventually to drive YbRh2Si2 to a pressure controlled QCP. In this paper we compare the effect of external hydrostatic pressure and chemical substitution on the ground-state properties of YbRh2Si2.

Effect of pressure on the Electron Spin Resonance of a Heavy-Fermion metal

We investigate the electron-spin resonance (ESR) phenomenon in the heavy-fermion metal YbRh2Si2 by applying hydrostatic pressure up to 3 GPa and by inducing internal pressure on the Yb site chemically in Yb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2 samples. We found that the increase in pressure, reducing the hybridization between 4f and conduction electrons, leads to a remarkable change in the temperature dependence of the g factor and broadens the ESR line. We relate the differences between the effect of internal and external pressure on the low temperature ESR parameters to the disorder induced by Co doping. The pressure effects on the Yb3+ related resonance in YbRh2Si2 again manifest its local character when compared with the resonance of diluted Gd in heavy-fermion metals.

Electron Spin Resonance of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice CeRuPO

The spin dynamics of the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice CeRuPO is investigated by Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) at microwave frequencies of 1, 9.4, and 34~GHz. The measured resonance can be ascribed to a rarely observed bulk Ce3+ resonance in a metallic Ce compound and can be followed below the ferromagnetic transition temperature Tc=14 K. At T>Tc the interplay between the RKKY-exchange interaction and the crystal electric field anisotropy determines the ESR parameters. Near Tc the spin relaxation rate is influenced by the critical fluctuations of the order parameter.

Hall effect measurements on YbRh2Si2 and relatives in the light of electronic structure calculations

We report experimental and theoretical investigations of the Hall effect in YbRh2Si2 and its reference compounds LuRh2Si2 and YbIr2Si2. Based on band-structure calculations we identify two bands dominating the Hall coefficient in all these compounds. For the case of LuRh2Si2 - the non-magnetic reference compound of YbRh2Si2 - the temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient is described quantitatively to arise from two hole-like bands. For YbIr2Si2 and YbRh2Si2, renormalized band calculations yield two bands of opposite character. In YbRh2Si2 these two bands almost compensate each other. We present strong indications that the sample dependences of the low-temperature Hall coefficient observed for YbRh2Si2 arise from slight variations of the relative scattering rates of the two bands. Minute changes of the composition appear to be the origin.

Structural and magnetic transition in CeFeAsO: separated or connected?

Using an adapted Sn-flux growth technique we obtained comparatively large CeFeAsO single crystals of better quality than previously reported polycrystals or single crystals, as evidenced by much sharper anomalies at the structural and magnetic phase transitions as well as a much higher residual resistivity ratio of 12. In the magnetically ordered phase we observe a very pronounced metallic behavior of the in-plane resistivity, which excludes a Mott insulator regime at low temperature. The separation Delta_T = T_0 - T_N between structural and magnetic ordering temperatures decreases with increasing sample quality, from 18 K in the initial reports to 6 K in the present single crystals, demonstrating that this separation is not an intrinsic property of the RFeAsO systems. Our results indicate that the coupling between magnetic ordering and structural distortion is very similar in AFe2As2 and RFeAsO type of compounds, much more similar than previously thought. The implications of our experimental results give arguments both in favor and against the nematic phase model.

Temperature- and Magnetic-Field-Dependent Optical Properties of Heavy Quasiparticles in YbIr2Si2

We report the temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent optical conductivity spectra of the heavy electron metal YbIr$_2$Si$_2$. Upon cooling below the Kondo temperature ($T_{\rm K}$), we observed a typical charge dynamics that is expected for a formation of a coherent heavy quasiparticle state. We obtained a good fitting of the Drude weight of the heavy quasiparticles by applying a modified Drude formula with a photon energy dependence of the quasiparticle scattering rate that shows a similar power-law behavior as the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity. By applying a magnetic field of 6T below $T_{\rm K}$, we found a weakening of the effective dynamical mass enhancement by about 12% in agreement with the expected decrease of the $4f$-conduction electron hybridization on magnetic field.

Development of the critical exponent at the antiferromagnetic phase transition of YbRh2Si2 under chemical pressure

We present specific-heat measurements in the vicinity of the antiferromagnetic phase transition on single crystals of the alloy Yb(Rh_{1-x}Co_x)2Si2 for x<= 0.38. This study was motivated by the violation of critical universality in the undoped YbRh2Si2 (Krellner et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 196402) where we have found a large critical exponent a=0.38. For Co-doped samples we observe a drastic change of the critical fluctuations resulting in a negative a, explainable within the universality classes of phase transitions. The development of a under chemical pressure gives strong indication that the violation of critical universality in YbRh2Si2 is due to the nearby quantum critical point.

Electrical resistivity ofYb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2 single crystals at low temperatures

We report low-temperature measurements of the electrical resistivity of Yb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2 single crystals with 0 <= x <= 0.12. The isoelectronic substitution of Co on the Rh site leads to a decrease of the unit cell volume which stabilizes the antiferromagnetism. Consequently, the antiferromagnetic transition temperature increases upon Co substitution. For x = 0.07 Co content a subsequent low-temperature transition is observed in agreement with susceptibility measurements and results on YbRh2Si2 under hydrostatic pressure. Above the Neel transition the resistivity follows a non-Fermi liquid behavior similar to that of YbRh2Si2.

Low temperature properties of the Electron Spin Resonance in YbRh2Si2

We present the field and temperature behavior of the narrow Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) response in YbRh2Si2 well below the single ion Kondo temperature. The ESR g factor reflects a Kondo-like field and temperature evolution of the Yb3+ magnetism. Measurements towards low temperatures (>0.5K) have shown distinct crossover anomalies of the ESR parameters upon approaching the regime of a well defined heavy Fermi liquid. Comparison with the field dependence of specific heat and electrical resistivity reveal that the ESR parameters can be related to quasiparticle mass and cross section and, hence, contain inherent heavy electron properties.

Magnetic field dependence of the antiferromagnetic phase transitions in Co-doped YbRh_2Si_2

We present first specific-heat data of the alloy Yb(Rh_(1-x)Co_x)_2Si_2 at intermediate Co-contents x=0.18, 0.27, and 0.68. The results already point to a complex magnetic phase diagram as a function of composition. Co-doping of YbRh_2Si_2 (T_N^{x=0}=72 mK) stabilizes the magnetic phase due to the volume decrease of the crystallographic unit cell. The magnetic phase transitions are clearly visible as pronounced anomalies in C^{4f}(T)/T and can be suppressed by applying a magnetic field. Going from x=0.18 to x=0.27 we observe a change from two mean-field (MF) like magnetic transitions at T_N^{0.18}=1.1 K and T_L^{0.18}=0.65 K to one sharp λ-type transition at T_N^{0.27}=1.3 K. Preliminary measurements under magnetic field do not confirm the field-induced first-order transition suggested in the literature. For x=0.68 we find two transitions at T_N^{0.68}=1.14 K and T_L^{0.68}=1.06 K.

ESR of YbRh2Si2 and 174YbRh2Si2 : local and itinerant properties

Below the Kondo temperature the heavy Fermion compound YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ shows a well defined Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) with local Yb$^{3+}$ properties. We report a detailed analysis of the ESR intensity which gives information on the number of ESR active centers relative to the ESR of well localized Yb$^{3+}$ in YPd$_3$:Yb. The ESR lineshape is investigated regarding contributions from itinerant centers. From the ESR of monoisotopic $^{174}$YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ we could exclude unresolved hyperfine contributions to the lineshape.
