Mean hitting time formula for positive maps

In the classical theory of Markov chains, one may study the mean time to reach some chosen state, and it is well-known that in the irreducible, finite case, such quantity can be calculated in terms of the fundamental matrix of the walk, as stated by the mean hitting time formula. In this work, we present an analogous construction for the setting of irreducible, positive, trace preserving maps. The reasoning on positive maps generalizes recent results given for quantum Markov chains, a class of completely positive maps acting on graphs, presented by S. Gudder. The tools employed in this work are based on a proper choice of block matrices of operators, inspired in part by recent work on Schur functions for closed operators on Banach spaces, due to F.A.Grünbaum and one of the authors. The problem at hand is motivated by questions on quantum information theory, most particularly the study of quantum walks, and provides a basic context on which statistical aspects of quantum evolutions on finite graphs can be expressed in terms of the fundamental matrix, which turns out to be an useful generalized inverse associated with the dynamics. As a consequence of the wide generality of the mean hitting time formula found in this paper, we have obtained extensions of the classical version, either by assuming only the knowledge of the probabilistic distribution for the initial state, or by enlarging the arrival state to a subset of states.

Homogeneous open quantum walks on the line: criteria for site recurrence and absorption

In this work, we study open quantum random walks, as described by S. Attal et al. These objects are given in terms of completely positive maps acting on trace-class operators, leading to one of the simplest open quantum versions of the recurrence problem for classical, discrete-time random walks. This work focuses on obtaining criteria for site recurrence of nearest-neighbor, homogeneous walks on the integer line, with the description presented here making use of recent results of the theory of open walks, most particularly regarding reducibility properties of the operators involved. This allows us to obtain a complete criterion for site recurrence in the case for which the internal degree of freedom of each site (coin space) is of dimension 2. We also present the analogous result for irreducible walks with an internal degree of arbitrary finite dimension and the absorption problem for walks on the semi-infinite line.

Quantum Markov chains: recurrence, Schur functions and splitting rules

In this work we study the recurrence problem for quantum Markov chains, which are quantum versions of classical Markov chains introduced by S. Gudder and described in terms of completely positive maps. A notion of monitored recurrence for quantum Markov chains is examined in association with Schur functions, which codify information on the first return to some given state or subspace. Such objects possess important factorization and decomposition properties which allow us to obtain probabilistic results based solely on those parts of the graph where the dynamics takes place, the so-called splitting rules. These rules also yield an alternative to the folding trick to transform a doubly infinite system into a semi-infinite one which doubles the number of internal degrees of freedom. The generalization of Schur functions --so-called FR-functions-- to the general context of closed operators in Banach spaces is the key for the present applications to open quantum systems. An important class of examples included in this setting are the open quantum random walks, as described by S. Attal et al., but we will state results in terms of general completely positive trace preserving maps. We also take the opportunity to discuss basic results on recurrence of finite dimensional iterated quantum channels and quantum versions of Kac's Lemma, in close association with recent results on the subject.

A dynamical point of view of Quantum Information: entropy and pressure

Quantum Information is a new area of research which has been growing rapidly since last decade. This topic is very close to potential applications to the so called Quantum Computer. In our point of view it makes sense to develop a more "dynamical point of view" of this theory. We want to consider the concepts of entropy and pressure for "stationary systems" acting on density matrices which generalize the usual ones in Ergodic Theory (in the sense of the Thermodynamic Formalism of R. Bowen, Y. Sinai and D. Ruelle). We consider the operator $\mathcal{L}$ acting on density matrices $ρ\in \mathcal{M}_N$ over a finite $N$-dimensional complex Hilbert space $\mathcal{L}(ρ):=\sum_{i=1}^k tr(W_iρW_i^*)V_iρV_i^*,$ where $W_i$ and $V_i$, $i=1,2,...k$ are operators in this Hilbert space. $\mathcal{L}$ is not a linear operator. In some sense this operator is a version of an Iterated Function System (IFS). Namely, the $V_i\,(.)\,V_i^*=:F_i(.)$, $i=1,2,...,k$, play the role of the inverse branches (acting on the configuration space of density matrices $ρ$) and the $W_i$ play the role of the weights one can consider on the IFS. We suppose that for all $ρ$ we have that $\sum_{i=1}^k tr(W_iρW_i^*)=1$. A family $W:=\{W_i\}_{i=1,..., k}$ determines a Quantum Iterated Function System (QIFS) $\mathcal{F}_{W}$, $\mathcal{F}_W=\{\mathcal{M}_N,F_i,W_i\}_{i=1,..., k}.$

A Thermodynamic Formalism for density matrices in Quantum Information

We consider new concepts of entropy and pressure for stationary systems acting on density matrices which generalize the usual ones in Ergodic Theory. Part of our work is to justify why the definitions and results we describe here are natural generalizations of the classical concepts of Thermodynamic Formalism (in the sense of R. Bowen, Y. Sinai and D. Ruelle). It is well-known that the concept of density operator should replace the concept of measure for the cases in which we consider a quantum formalism. We consider the operator $Λ$ acting on the space of density matrices $\mathcal{M}_N$ over a finite $N$-dimensional complex Hilbert space $$ Λ(ρ):=\sum_{i=1}^k tr(W_iρW_i^*)\frac{V_iρV_i^*}{tr(V_iρV_i^*)}, $$ where $W_i$ and $V_i$, $i=1,2,..., k$ are linear operators in this Hilbert space. In some sense this operator is a version of an Iterated Function System (IFS). Namely, the $V_i\,(.)\,V_i^*=:F_i(.)$, $i=1,2,...,k$, play the role of the inverse branches (i.e., the dynamics on the configuration space of density matrices) and the $W_i$ play the role of the weights one can consider on the IFS. In this way a family $W:=\{W_i\}_{i=1,..., k}$ determines a Quantum Iterated Function System (QIFS). We also present some estimates related to the Holevo bound.

Quantum Stochastic Processes, Quantum Iterated Function Systems and Entropy

We describe some basic results for Quantum Stochastic Processes and present some new results about a certain class of processes which are associated to Quantum Iterated Function Systems (QIFS). We discuss questions related to the Markov property and we present a definition of entropy which is induced by a QIFS. This definition is a natural generalization of the Shannon-Kolmogorov entropy from Ergodic Theory. This definition is different from the one in the paper "A Thermodynamic Formalism for density matrices in Quantum Information" by the same authors.
