High Frequency Sound in a Unitary Fermi Gas

We present an experimental and theoretical study of the phonon mode in a unitary Fermi gas. Using two-photon Bragg spectroscopy, we measure excitation spectra at a momentum of approximately half the Fermi momentum, both above and below the superfluid critical temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$. Below $T_\mathrm{c}$, the dominant excitation is the Bogoliubov-Anderson (BA) phonon mode, driven by gradients in the phase of the superfluid order parameter. The temperature dependence of the BA phonon is consistent with a theoretical model based on the quasiparticle random phase approximation in which the dominant damping mechanism is via collisions with thermally excited quasiparticles. As the temperature is increased above $T_\mathrm{c}$, the phonon evolves into a strongly damped collisional mode, accompanied by an abrupt increase in spectral width. Our study reveals strong similarities between sound propagation in the unitary Fermi gas and liquid helium.

Fast machine-learning online optimization of ultra-cold-atom experiments

Machine-designed control of complex devices or experiments can discover strategies superior to those developed via simplified models. We describe an online optimization algorithm based on Gaussian processes and apply it to optimization of the production of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). BEC is typically created with an exponential evaporation ramp that is approximately optimal for s-wave, ergodic dynamics with two-body interactions and no other loss rates, but likely sub-optimal for many real experiments. Machine learning using a Gaussian process, in contrast, develops a statistical model of the relationship between the parameters it controls and the quality of the BEC produced. This is an online process, and an active one, as the Gaussian process model updates on the basis of each subsequent experiment and proposes a new set of parameters as a result. We demonstrate that the Gaussian process machine learner is able to discover a ramp that produces high quality BECs in 10 times fewer iterations than a previously used online optimization technique. Furthermore, we show the internal model developed can be used to determine which parameters are essential in BEC creation and which are unimportant, providing insight into the optimization process.

A Bose-condensed, simultaneous dual species Mach-Zehnder atom interferometer

This paper presents the first realisation of a simultaneous $^{87}$Rb -$^{85}$Rb Mach-Zehnder atom interferometer with Bose-condensed atoms. A number of ambitious proposals for precise terrestrial and space based tests of the Weak Equivalence Principle rely on such a system. This implementation utilises hybrid magnetic-optical trapping to produce spatially overlapped condensates with a duty cycle of 20s. A horizontal optical waveguide with co-linear Bragg beamsplitters and mirrors is used to simultaneously address both isotopes in the interferometer. We observe a non-linear phase shift on a non-interacting $^{85}$Rb interferometer as a function of interferometer time, $T$, which we show arises from inter-isotope scattering with the co-incident $^{87}$Rb interferometer. A discussion of implications for future experiments is given.

A geometric wave function for few interacting bosons in a harmonic trap

We establish a new geometric wave function that combined with a variational principle efficiently describes a system of bosons interacting in a one-dimensional trap. By means of a a combination of the exact wave function solution for contact interactions and the asymptotic behaviour of the harmonic potential solution we obtain the ground state energy, probability density and profiles of a few boson system in a harmonic trap. We are able to access all regimes, ranging from the strongly attractive to the strongly repulsive one with an original and simple formulation.

11 W narrow linewidth laser source at 780nm for laser cooling and manipulation of Rubidium

We present a narrow linewidth continuous laser source with over 11 Watts of output power at 780nm, based on single-pass frequency doubling of an amplified 1560nm fibre laser with 36% efficiency. This source offers a combination of high power, simplicity, mode quality and stability. Without any active stabilization, the linewidth is measured to be below 10kHz. The fibre seed is tunable over 60GHz, which allows access to the D2 transitions in 87Rb and 85Rb, providing a viable high-power source for laser cooling as well as for large-momentum-transfer beamsplitters in atom interferometry. Sources of this type will pave the way for a new generation of high flux, high duty-cycle degenerate quantum gas experiments.

Optically guided linear Mach Zehnder atom interferometer

We demonstrate a horizontal, linearly guided Mach Zehnder atom interferometer in an optical waveguide. Intended as a proof-of-principle experiment, the interferometer utilises a Bose-Einstein condensate in the magnetically insensitive |F=1,mF=0> state of Rubidium-87 as an acceleration sensitive test mass. We achieve a modest sensitivity to acceleration of da = 7x10^-4 m/s^2. Our fringe visibility is as high as 38% in this optically guided atom interferometer. We observe a time-of-flight in the waveguide of over half a second, demonstrating the utility of our optical guide for future sensors.

Quantum criticality of spin-1 bosons in a 1D harmonic trap

We investigate universal thermodynamics and quantum criticality of spin-1 bosons with strongly repulsive density-density and antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interactions in a one-dimensional harmonic trap. From the equation of state, we find that a partially-polarized core is surrounded by two wings composed of either spin-singlet pairs or a fully spin-aligned Tonks-Girardeau gas depending on the polarization. We describe how the scaling behaviour of density profiles can reveal the universal nature of quantum criticality and map out the quantum phase diagram. We further show that at quantum criticality the dynamical critical exponent $z = 2$ and correlation length exponent $ν=1/2$. This reveals a subtle resemblance to the physics of the spin-1/2 attractive Fermi gas.

Universality class of quantum criticality for strongly repulsive spin-1 bosons with antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interaction

Using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations we study the quantum phase diagram, thermodynamics and criticality of one-dimensional spin-1 bosons with strongly repulsive density-density and antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interactions. We analytically derive a high precision equation of state from which the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid physics and quantum critical behavior of the system are computed. We obtain explicit forms for the scaling functions near the critical points yielding the dynamical exponent $z=2$ and correlation length exponent $ν=1/2$ for the quantum phase transitions driven by either the chemical potential or the magnetic field. Consequently, we further demonstrate that quantum criticality of the system can be mapped out from the finite temperature density and magnetization profiles of the 1D trapped gas. Our results provide the physical origin of quantum criticality in a 1D many-body system beyond the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid description.

Phase Diagrams of Three-Component Attractive Ultracold Fermions in One-Dimension

We investigate trions, paired states and quantum phase transitions in one-dimensional SU(3) attractive fermions in external fields by means of the Bethe ansatz and the dressed energy formalism. Analytical results for the ground state energy, critical fields and complete phase diagrams are presented for weak and strong regimes. Numerical solutions of the dressed energy equations allow us to examine how the different phase boundaries modify by varying the inter-component coupling throughout the whole attractive regimes. The pure trionic phase reduces smoothly by decreasing this coupling until the weak limit is reached. In this weak regime, a pure BCS-paired phase can be sustained under certain nonlinear Zeeman splittings. Finally we confirm that the analytic expressions for the physical quantities and resulting phase diagrams are highly accurate in the weak and strong coupling regimes.
